Woohoo!! This will be my 100th review for this year, so I made my goal this year!! I went to this park after visiting the capital building. It's a beautiful urban park with lots of walking space, flower, trees, memorials, and tons of seating!! I've never seen a park with so much seating available for people!! I also love all the fruit trees around but all the fruit within reach have been picked clean. We did not get to explore the entire park as our parking meter was running out and I'd rather not get a ticket. We saw a firefighters monument and another veterans memorial. There is also a rose garden with a variety of roses. I also like how there are various trees from the weeping willows to the redwoods! Metered parking can be found around the park. There is parking adjacent to the park and a bit further away as well. Some parking meters increase in price after 1 hour and some after 2 hours. If you play pokemon go, there are tons of pokestops and tons of pokemon that spawn here! I'll come back here on my next visit to Sacramento and explore the whole park! It's a great place to take a relaxing walk or have lunch outside! read more

Simply beautiful! Staying in the local Sheraton this park was in perfect walking distance so my husband and I came by for a lazy afternoon stroll, taking in the sights and snapping the odd picture. The abundance of flowers, tree's and wildlife is absolutely stunning and despite being right in downtown it's so peaceful, It's the perfect place to spend the afternoon relaxing. There's also a number of memorials along with a beautiful rose garden and plenty of grassy area's to set up a blanket for picnic-ing... Just avoid the shade of the Orange tree's if you don't want to be bothered by wasps. I'm so jealous of the locals to have this park. read more

A bummer the state is having such a large and long drought. The several block area the Capitol sits on is a beautiful park with rose gardens, statues and memorials and orange groves. But the lawn is now brown and crunchy. There are barely maintaining the roses and trees. It's still a great area to walk around and enjoy the outdoors when in the area. read more

Now this is one scenic and historic park! Yes the state capitol building is the main attraction, but stop and take a look around and you'll be in 'awww' about the number of native California related things you'll see. Some features and highlights: ~ A few monuments dedicated to California heroes like the Firefighters Memorial (the reason for me starting this review). I see the names and I ponder. ~ Roses galore, succulents, and plants everywhere you stroll. Simply beautiful during the spring. It's just green everywhere! Check out the World Peace Rose Garden section as well. ~ There's also the California Veterans Memorial Memorial dedicated to all those that served beginning with the Mexican-American War, Civil War, and up to our more recent wars. Another feature is the special Purple Heart Monument, or that tall granite obelisk, and a Vietnam Veterans Memorial honoring our service men and women from California. ~ Trees trees trees! So many of them. Some native, some from different countries. Huge, gigantic, and just admirable to see! ~ Other highlights I enjoyed seeing; the Liberty Bell replica, the Indian Grinding Rock, a life-sized statue of Father Junípero Serra, the Seal of California, and the Peace Officers Memorial. ~ Not as ginormous as NY's Central Park, but coming here does remind me of St. Steven's Green in Ireland. Plenty to see here, and all for free! So take your allergy medicine, bring a picnic blanket, leash up the dog, prep the baby stroller, do whatever, but don't forget a camera to start snappin' away for some great shots! read more

I love urban parks and this is one of the best. It is a large park with plenty of room to walk and explore and reflect. The rose garden in magnificent and the scent wafting off of the plants in the late afternoon was heavenly. This was in mid November so obviously a much milder climate in Sacramento then in Reno. They also have palm trees. Palm trees always make me laugh. I don't know why, they just do. They really are like pink flamingoes. It is hard to believe they are real. There are also banana trees, orange trees, bamboo groves, and the most spectacular range of oaks and maples imaginable. All the leaves of the hardwoods were in full fall color which only added to the splendor of the park. The Vietnam memorial is a very sobering reminder of a dark, sad time in out history. It is lovely and fitting reminder of all those young men and women who sacrificed so much. Scattered throughout the park are poems and quotes with a theme of peace and fellowship, beauty and reflection. Do not come to downtown Sacramento without spending at least a few minutes enjoying a spot of peace and beauty. read more

So peaceful and somewhat enchanting. Being a Californian, I never thought to come and visit the Capitol. Since we were visiting in the Sac area, we decided it was time to check it out. It's pretty amazing to think that all the representative from every city in our state come here and make decisions for the state. The park itself has so much to offer. TREES, many many trees from different area, some from historical sites are replanted here for viewing. There's a tree tour too, if anyone is interested in taking. I believe it's free. Places to sit, and even replicas of the Liberty bell and several historical momuments. It was one of the highlights in our visit to Sacramento. read more

Capitol Park is a must if you're in the Sac area! The landscaping is very well kept with a cactus and rose garden. Additionally, they have a veterans memorial. The park is big enough to have a picnic with a friend or a nice stroll. There are great views of the capital building! The location of the park is right in "downtown" so you have a lot of things in close proximity to the park. Even if you're just in for the day it's a quick place to take some cool photos and hangout. read more

One of the best parts of Downtown Sacramento is the California State Capitol and the entire Capitol Park complex. This large park is nestled right in the heart of Sacramento and provides a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the urban core. Capitol Park stretches from 10th to 15th Streets between L and N. Most of the park is surrounded by street parking, but most of the visitors probably walk or bike here. Capitol Park is perfect for nearly every activity. The ring of the park makes a great running or walking track with few vehicle crossings and nice scenery. Those of us less fit can always enjoy the nice scenery as well! The park has many walking paths to encourage meandering among the various trees and gardens. The State Park system maintains it well and includes various types of California flora to highlight the beauty of our state. The park has undergone changes over the years including more drought tolerant landscapes and several hidden safety features. I really appreciate the several rose gardens which are both an inspiration and a reminder for when to prune my own bushes. Many California plants are represented including redwoods and cacti to cover the entire state. Being located in downtown, you will experience a wide range of people including the homeless and transients. One advantage is that the California Highway Patrol keeps a strict watch over the entire Capitol grounds so safety is very good. There are also many seasonal displays including the annual Christmas tree. Lobbyists and protesters both use the grounds on a regular basis adding to the overall color. Capitol Park is a great asset to Sacramento, and I encourage its use early and often! read more

So I'm here at the Capitol Park and they have so many different varieties of beautiful trees from all over the world. It's my first time here it's in Sacramento. I am out at a conference here for the charter school. The park reminds me of little bit about of Golden Gate Park but they do have way way cleaner areas. Lots of visitors I see here and again all sorts of trees and very green I guess from the constant maintenance and sprinklers that I see. Did I mention that this park includes trees from pretty much all over the world?!! They have the silver maple and tall redwood trees! (Well, OK they're California trees but essentially a lot of other different trees) However, there's too many for me to even say so you'll have to check it out yourself. I like how they keep the park super clean. And the janitors or maintenance people here seem to always be sweeping something up. There are also statues and an array of artsy sculptures. "A walk in the park is a pleasure to do, When a visit to one is long overdue, To take the dogs too, is really great, For the exercise is just first rate. This is such a beautiful park and Capitol grounds. A quick glance at the park shows beauty and peace. A more thorough walk of the park will highlight a rich history in California and a park that has a lot of historical dedication. These highlighted areas include champions of doing what was right, firefighters heroes who perished in the line of duty, Purple Heart recipients, service members killed in the line of duty, just to name a few. The park connect to the state Capitol building. At the opposite end of the park is the International World Peace Rose Garden. I've included a video in the garden. It is so peaceful and really allows you to think about where we've come and what's at stake when you're there. The park is also just a great place to read a book or sit down and enjoy the beautiful weather. Definitely a must visit if you're in Sacramento. Enjoy! read more

This park is so pretty, the flowers, the trees, etc. The area with all the names and statues always moves me (the memorial). It is peaceful there, very peaceful. It's also interesting to just sit and quietly people watch. People from all walks of life just passing by leaving their footsteps behind... Capital Park is a pretty green space and a nice place to hang out while waiting for the business of government to continue. When the weather gets "Valley Hot", a little shade among the grass and flowers is a welcome respite. I also find the people watching to be interesting and it depends on the day and who is protesting what. During my most recent visit, the Assembly and Senate were voting on the budget, so the "crowd" was light and mostly featured Suits and School Groups. On 1/16/2001, a semi-trailer truck driver with a criminal history, drove over a curb, along a short walk-way, and rammed his truck into the Southern Portico. The truck's fuel tank ignited, killed the driver, and caused US$15 million in damage to the Building. Since that time, added Security measures have been added around the Capital. You may want to look for the bollards, etc. hidden withing the surrounding greenery... read more

Capitol Park is a serene, 40-acre grove of trees, gardens and memorials surrounding the state Capitol. If you want to spend a few moments, or hours, you can escape traffic, bikes and skateboards and read a book, see trees from around the world or just hang out. It's a great photo spot for portraits any time of the year. On a fall afternoon, the choices are endless and the filtered afternoon sunlight makes for some serious shot making opps (leave the shot ski at home). The Camellia Grove, Rose Garden and California Veterans' Memorial are just a few of the thoughtful works that may inspire contemplation and reflection. If you have the time, stop into the Capitol Rotunda and look up into the "false dome," an interesting bit of architectural deception. Back outside, watch out for the dog poop. read more

This is thee park to check out in Sacramento. Homeless mixed in with legislators and school kids checking out the state capital. There are multiple pathways and I walked and looped around for and hour recently. Bringing a tear it the eye are the various memorial boards of people who gave there lives helping others . In wars, fighting fires and various battles that happen in life. The reality is frightful. The destiny is not to live forever but live full. Not everyone one gets that chance. The drought is taking is wicked toll on the greens. I was there at lunch time so it was pretty busy with walkers and government workers taking a break .it is worth it to me to look around. The capital is very stately. I was imagining all the important decisions that have taken place here . It's has an energy of importance . read more

It's a nice place to go for a walk. I am there pretty often on account I work in the area. There's a nice little turtle pond, however, they don't always come out. You'll be lucky some days to see them pop up and sun themselves on the rocks! The rose garden is really nice... My only gripe about the area are the not so pleasant smelling ginko nut trees. This 1 star review is solely intended for the public restrooms located on the capitol grounds =========== I nearly shit myself on my morning walk today; but, luckily the capitol park restroom was open... Or so I thought... What I stepped into was absolutely disgusting. The restroom is a cesspool, smelling of piss, shit, mildew, and god knows what else [e.g. cum, meth, etc] Moreover, there was NO toilet paper so I had to use seat covers [which more or less scratched my anus hole]. Also, there was NO hand soap or hand sanitizer so I had to walk home with fecal tainted hands. In summation, the public restroom on capitol grounds is disgusting. The grounds crew should be power washing the inside of it once a day and restocking it with toilet paper. They also need to add hand soap or sanitizer... For Pete's sake...this is the Capitol of California, show some respect!!! In closing, I ultimately blame our so called Governor Gavin Newsom for the demise of the capitol park public restrooms. If he truly cared about our beautiful and historic capitol and wasn't so busy stuffing his elitist face at the French Laundry with his lobbyist friends, then these restrooms would be immaculate.... to this end, I FORMALLY DEMAND THAT NEWSOM ORDER THESE RESTROOMS CLEANED ON A DAILY BASIS!!! Such a beautiful place to come see when you're by the capitol. There are various small gardens, such as the rose and cactus areas. There is an array of trees scattered across the green grass, each with a label to let you know what tree it is. I also like that there is a memorial honoring our soldiers who have fought for our country. People come with their significant others, children, dogs, friends, or alone just to enjoy this park. there are many benches as well as shaded areas where you could just sit under a tree and enjoy the fresh air. This is a gorgeous little park. I put enough quarters in my parking meter for 37 minutes, but could have easily spent twice as long here, just enjoying the rose garden. There are so many different varieties of roses, many with amusing names -- "playgirl" or "pillow fight," and there are placards throughout that display poems, written by area schoolchildren, on themes such as roses and peace. All of this is so awesome. Next to the rose garden there is also a memorial to the Vietnam vets from California who died or went missing, their names carved in marble alongside the branch of the military in which they served, and their age, all grouped by what part of California they were from. There are marble benches surrounding the memorial so you can pause to reflect. I will spend additional change on my meter next time so I can enjoy more of this park. read more

Wonderful grassy park to wander through, take pictures, smell the flowers, learn about Capitol history, visit a war memorial, watch or have a wedding, and feed squirrels. Parking may be hard to find on a weekday, but is pretty open on the weekends. I also highly recommend a FREE tour of the Capitol while you're here. It's your tax dollars at work if you're a Californian. There are many areas to sit and contemplate your surroundings (or life, if you choose). Overall, it's very peaceful. There are days when groups may be protesting or having a rally on the the Capitol steps, but it's not a regular occurrence. Like many places Downtown, I would not recommend walking through Capitol Park at night...even if you're a guy. Be wise. Other than that, enjoy. read more

This is a super cute park! This park is a large square with the Capitol on it. I always see runners or walkers along the sidewalk. There are always people here whether it's field trippers, state workers, or visitors from the Convention Center. You can definitely take some very cute touristy pictures as the park is covered with trees and plants that are native to California. Great backgrounds for your pictures! You'll see some random homeless hanging around but for the most part, this park is very clean and well taken care of. read more

I love the Capitol park! I like to run around here and the perimeter is a little bit over 1 mile. It's great when I'm running long distance because I can just lap around. There are many sidewalk trails inside the park as well. For a downtown park, it's really clean and well kept since it is the park of the Capitol. It gets crowded during the weekday at noon. Nearby workers take their daily stroll around the park. There are a lot of benches throughout the park which is great for a picnic. I work around here so if it's a nice day, I'll take my lunch out and enjoy the fresh air out of the office. There are a lot of events that happen in front of the capitol steps. There are fairs throughout the year. Recently, a Lay's truck stopped by to promote their new Lay's favors and gave out a bag of all their new flavors. It's a great place to take pictures too. My friends have taken engagement and wedding pictures here. The park is so big that there are so many different scenery options for shoots. The farmer's market is in front of the rose garden every Thursday in the spring. Make sure to walk through all the vendors because everyone has different prices for the same things. The cheaper produce tend to be at the ends. Of course, there's the Capitol. It's open to the public so take a stroll if you're nearby. read more

On my lunch breaks, one of my favorite things to do is walk around the Capitol Park. One of the things I really like about this park is the different kinds of trees and flowers that surround and lay within the park. It really gives each step you take a different view. There are plenty of benches within the park to sit at, have lunch at, and enjoy the scenery. The only reason for the -2 stars is that at some part around the park, more along the sides of L St and N St, smell like fresh manure. I know it can't just be the squirrels, but I'm also suspecting it's from the horses that the cops ride on around the park. Sometimes the smell is strong enough for me to not want to continue the walk around and just head back. All in all though, it's a really beautiful park read more

I love this park. I love Sacramento, and this park, represents almost everything I have loved about Sacramento. There's always something going on, a wedding, a political rally, a food truck event... it might serve as a starting point for a hike, or a meet up place for yogis... I have come to this work for late night strolls, and watched families of raccoons running around, I've brought my out of towner friends and relatives here as a tourist attraction both to the capital building as well as the Vietnam memorial statue there (have you notice how young the fallen soldiers were?) But I have always loved most about this park, has been it's important role it has played as far as political and social significance. Whether we're protesting Mike Pence's presence and question his motives for being in Sacramento, or rallying for a day of reason, or if it's the women's march, the start of a food movement, whatever you think, it happens here, and starts here. There is always life, always some sort of activity going on in this park, and I doubt anyone, ANYONE, who loves Sacramento as much as I do, can ever be indifferent to this park. At times, seeing the homeless people who come here breaks my heart, but that is a part of our beautiful city too isn't it? I love Sacramento, and the Capital park is how I start introducing this city to anyone who wants to learn about it. read more

Always a great place to go for a walk. This has been one of the cooler weeks on July where the weather has been perfect temperature to frolic in the park. The roses are in full bloom at the park right now so the whole park is full of free sniffs that smell amazing. The morals are always awesome to walk around too. The best part of the whole place is watching the little squirts run around. They chase each other through the park and jump from tree to tree. The other day I saw one almost do a back flip off of a tree. He was the coolest squirrel ever. I'm assuming it was all to get an orange that had just fell off of one of the trees. After he got to it, he tooled it about 10 ft and started digging his little hole to hide his newest treasure! read more

Ah, Capitol Park. Once a park I walked through to get to the capitol. Now a place to frequent in the middle of the night to catch pokemon by the Vietnam Memorial where three lures are always on. Oh how things change. Seriously though, this is a nice park to walk through in the heart of downtown Sacramento. And depending on what you feel is walking distance you can actually wander down to Old Sac. Or vice versa, which is what I do. Explore the grounds, the roses, take a break on a bench or lay on the grass. But try to avoid it during the heat because Sacramento shows no mercy during the summer! There's not "much to do" but you can take it all in. Take a nice photo of the Capitol from the front or back, whichever way you are. Walk around it and then maybe wander off. You're really in the heart of downtown and there is a lot going on. This is a great place to have lunch, maybe a picnic and enjoy a nice day (if it's nice). Parking will and always is a hassle even at 11 pm at night. You're in downtown. There's parking garages all over or pay for street parking, whichever you fancy. Just don't forget to come back and not get a ticket. Parking enforcement is on the ball in downtown looking to get ya. Aside from that I'd say go to the Capitol and explore a bit. Obviously it's a working building but you can do a bit of walking on the inside. There's not that much to see but hey if you're not from around here it's not a bad thing to do. read more

1. Large, Beautiful Park - Even during a drought, this is one of the nicest places in Sac to work out, read on a bench, eat lunch in the grass, go for a walk, or bring out of town guests. In spite of being in the middle of downtown, it's surprisingly quiet, with lots of options for sun or shade. I've seen more than a few quinceneras and bridal parties having photos done here! 2. Great Workout Spot - If you were interested (and I'm sure you were), the "Capitol Loop" is almost exactly a mile around. Super convenient for timing runs or measuring distance! The grounds themselves have lots of semi-isolated grassy areas, and you'll frequently see yoga classes or fitness groups taking advantage. 3. Tourist-Friendly - Did you know that there is at least one of every type of tree native to California on the grounds? Sometimes people forget that the Capitol is not only a place of business, but a museum! Great tours inside, and memorials, statues, and a rose garden on the grounds. Unlike Ceasar Chavez, this park has minimal vagrants or crime, plus the fairly regular presence of CHP on horseback. 4. Lots of trees in Capitol Park, they numbered, each number tells what species of Trees they are! For example, think Loquat Tree is Number 352! There four sides to Capitol Park, north, west, south, east! Many activities such as fund raising walks, Picnic In The Park (did say as I AM IN), graduations, happen on west side! Think east side has beautiful of Rose Garden, they are alive roses, alive bushes, alive trees! Thank to military that served! I say that because there the California Veterans Memorial inside the park, it has names listed and the cities California where they were from! It has statue images, such as doctor taking care one soldier that lost his legs (sad)! Every memorial day, they at this California Veterans Memorial have the "Reading Of The Names," when used be Sacramento Jazz Jubilee/Music Fest, I would go to the "Reading Of The Names!" On the top steps of Capitol Park, west side, three seals! One the California state seal, the middle is California Indian Tribes seal, the last is Mexicans In California state seal! The great thing about Capitol park is the size of it. I'd venture to say it's a mile or so around, perfect for walking at lunch or on your break. There is always something going on there, too, so if you like action or need to meet some new people (especially political folks), hang out here. I'm not much of a trouble maker, but somehow, the action there always seems to pull me in. Take for instance a few years ago when my roommate and I decided to hearken our hippie sides and sojourn from our midtown flat to the park at dark to play some hand drums and light some incense. We learned that the police don't much care for the smell of nagchampa in the evening and kicked us out. I know ... we're rebels. Very recently (and almost always) a protest was/is spilling out of the park and onto the sidewalks. Confession; I was already having a fairly rough day and so the protesters were holding signs that, to make a long story short, were the last straw. I didn't have a sign (and normally I'm not a loud or brazen kind of lady) but I did give the protesting woman my side of the argument ... all the while slowly driving by in my car. Yeah, not really fair fighting on my part. I was angry but not to the point of cursing or name-calling -- still, that didn't stop her friend from chasing after me on foot flaming me with an impressive line up of four-letter words. Hey, buddy, I wanted to say, I'm in a car, you know. As if he didn't know, right? The last noteable about this park, however, is the rise and fall of the squirrels. Apparently, they were getting way too comfortable and had no means of population control ... until the state decided they had to go. But some of them are back ... I think they like all the action, too (and the free lunches of course). read more
