This review is for the Grand Ballroom itself only, not the staff. I was in Sacramento for a conference a couple weeks ago, which was located in The Grand Ballroom. The venue is very large and spacious but is quite old and run-down. The outside of the building is plain so you'll have to keep an eye out for it or you'll drive past it. The walls are plain and seemed grungy, and there wasn't anything notable about the ballroom. While it definitely got the job done for a conference, it would definitely need a lot of dazzling up for something like a wedding. The other venues of Capital Plaza Halls might be more fancy. The Grand Ballroom room itself is totally functional, but the restrooms are in need of major upgrades and expansions. The appliances are old, and with so many people in attendance and only a few stalls, the bathroom lines were outrageous and the ventilation in the bathroom hallways was poor. read more

This venue seemed decent when we first toured it however things went left fast. I've been planning events since 2019 and never had these experiences with a venue. few days before our event they called us and asked us if we needed Wi-Fi because it would be an $80 charge which is insane considering the price your already paying for the venue. Thank god my DJ didn't need it anyway. We rented out the downstairs ball room come day of none of the outlets worked took forever for them to fix them. The lady that was in charge day of new no English so it was very hard to communicate our issues. We paid a large fee for an ice machine that was on the 3rd floor every time our caterer needed it she had to ask for it and wait. We rented flatware and silverware that we needed to bus and clean off ourselves which was not communicated to us in our meeting. The venue it self is very dark so make sure your photographers have plenty of lighting. I would never recommend this place to any client unfortunately. read more

Located on 9th Street, across from Rite Aid. Parking garages are available as well as street parking after certain hours. The venue is old. It smelled old. It looks like an abandoned building from outside. The highlight: the elevator. Everyone kept mentioning how cool the elevator is and what's up with the guy working the elevator. The elevator was a picture spot for many. The Fraternity Room is very ornate. A large rectangular room with no obstructions. High Ceilings. For the wedding reception, the buffet was set up in the next room along with a bar. Their staff was pretty swift with changing out pans, picking up dishes, refilling pitchers on the tables, etc. Shit was smooth. read more

I had the pleasure of being the DJ for a wedding at the nostalgic Capitol Plaza Ballroom. First time there. What a great space with lots of history. From the old-time elevator to the beautiful architecture, Capitol Plaza is definitely a great place to have a wedding. The only reason I can't give it five stars is that it was missing one important thing -- wi-fi. Because I post throughout my event and put together photo galleries, this was the only disappointment. Ornate vaulted ceilings and crown moldings are just part of the funky ambience you'll be experiencing--- along with a rickety old elevator, aging bathroom fixtures, and hinky electrical outlets (all common with historic older buildings). My first event (back in 1988) was in the Temple Room (3rd floor), my most recent event was in the Fraternity Room (also on 3rd floor). The "Silver Room" (a.k.a. The Dungeon) is actually a converted basement, and not recommended. I've known John, the executive chef, for 20 years and I can't say enough about his culinary skills. Its amazing what he's able to provide for budget brides! They get Hyatt quality for a Grange Hall price. the building gets 3 stars (mostly due to parking issues), but the food gets 5 stars (for banquet food). read more

My husband and I had our wedding reception in the Silver Ballroom Sept/2011. It was a blast. Not only does the Silver Ballroom make your fairy tale wedding come true, the staff are great and easy to work with. We had Mexican food and it was DELICIOUS and being able to bring your own alcohol saved us a ton. The bar tender was $150-200 and took great care of my guests. The coordinators took care of everything, I told them what I wanted, showed them how I wanted my center pieces, brought them my own table linens "it comes with white table cloths, but I wanted to add my own special touch" brought them the alcohol and EVERYTHIGN was set up the way I wanted it. We had my sisters engagement here this month in August and we did not have the best experience. First off it VERY hot in the ballroom it was like an oversized sauna. Everyone was fanning themselves with plates which ruined the videos. We had our hair done but it was so hot we all had to put our hair up, the dance floor was a sweat fest you could not dance for too long because it was so hot and sticky. It was really upsetting it was a very special day and the guest who had children had to leave early and a lot of people had to go outside due to the heat and missed a lot of the ceremony. The worst part was the guest were approaching me and my parents and asking us to find a way to fix the issue and turn the air on. It was hard for me to enjoy the night because I was running around looking for someone to help and there was no one there at all! The only person there was operating the elevator and he said he could not help. Even the kitchen staff were sweating like crazy which is not a good environment to be working in. I have never been to a hall where it was this hot. I am very upset and did not have a good experience here, I feel like they should have been honest and told us the BALLROOM would be this hot. Later we found out the AC unit went out and we ONLY found this out because WE called THEM while we were there and NOBODY CAME TO FIX IT!! They should have warned us, I wish we could have had this engagement somewhere else. Beware. Update: after looking at the guest snapchat pictures, it shows it was 90 degrees in there!! read more

It has been 3 months since I had my wedding at The Grand Ballroom (owned by Capitol Plaza Halls)... I have waited to write this review so I had a clear head on what I wanted to write. To start, everything started out great when my family & I toured the venue, then it all went downhill from there... Let me just start by saying NEVER HAVE YOUR WEDDING OR ANY TYPE OF EVENT HERE. They are a bunch of liars and will screw you any type of way they can! It's 2 weeks before my wedding and they tell me they don't know if I can set up the day before in case someone books an event that day. Well, it should have been blocked off a month before my wedding like they said! And then during my rehearsal, someone comes in and tells me I can only be there for 4 hours to set up/rehearse? Well, that was not what was agreed upon. Luckily, I had a crew of 20+ people helping and we finished early! Now it's the day of my wedding and everything was great up until showing up to our venue... the staff that we paid $22/hr for had no clue what they were doing. The bartenders that supposedly "have 10+ years of experience" couldn't make a simple jack and coke! To say the very least, my guests were very upset that the open bar was moving VERY SLOWLY! It moved sooo slow that I had one of my caterers jumped in to help. It was embarrassing especially since I am a waitress/bartender. I almost jumped back there and fired my bartenders on the spot. Remember to always interview your bartenders before you hire them and never listen to anyone because they are damn liars!!! Now here comes the best part... after the wedding I get charged $250 because someone "clogged the toilet and sink". That's a bunch of BS! My guests were in and out of all the bathrooms all night and everyone said the bathrooms were fine... So my point is, do not have an event here, do not hire their bartenders, do not pay for an event supervisor because they literally did nothing and lastly bring your money elsewhere! They will rip you off anyway they can. If I wasn't planning my wedding in 8 months and I didn't have 350 guests with minimal venue options, I would have never chosen this place! The place is beautiful but the staff is horrible! Be ware , as soon as you put your deposit the claws come out. We scheduled our wedding, put the deposit, and as life happens my father became Ill, put on hospice, and as a bride you want your father there, so I thought a simple ceremony at my fathers bedside would be best. I explained this to Rosa and what was her response "legally I can sue you for the whole wedding".....wow ......this was not something I could handle at the time, she said you can reschedule with us when your ready. I don't like to throw away money and a large amount at that. So then we keep trying to contact them with other dates and no sorry none of them are avail, we call with more dates and now they don't respond! Please know they are insensitive , and unethical and talk about not abiding by their own contract! Please look at the dates of their feedback , if it's such a great place why only 5 people in 4 years bothered to mention them. Be VERY careful when putting money down and signing their so called contract! 5/2/15 When i notified them initially of my situation their first response, legally you are responsible for the whole contract and we can sue you, I will have to speak with management was their response. Please do not deal with this type of business, my dying father and all they worried about was their money, and again never once did I ask for my 1,200.00 deposit back and still they threatened. We had our wedding reception here September 28, 2013. It was a huge success. The staff was wonderful to work with and knew what they were doing. They pretty much set everything up for us all we really did was set up our centerpieces which we asked to do. The food was OUTSTANDING we had several people tell us it was the best wedding food they ever had! However, my only complaint was that they put the buffet away to quickly, a lot of the guests only got to enjoy one serving... I had my wedding here a few weeks ago and I loved it! But this review is mainly for the STAFF! We had ordered food for 190 guests. The manager that is in charge mentioned they always make extra food for about 20 extra people in case they want to get seconds or if we end up having extra guests arrive. However, THAT WAS A LIE! We had our guests line up for food and one of the servers was telling me that they were running out of food and I said there is NO WAY this food is for 190 people, it seemed less. I mentioned I had PAID for 190 plates so they had to figure something out. (Not to mention, we had less people come to our wedding so there had to be extra food because no one was getting seconds at this point). One of my bridesmaids seen a lady in the back stuffing food FROM MY WEDDING THAT I PAID FOR in her personal bags. I stopped her and said this is why we are running out of food because you are taking the food that I paid for for yourself. So she acted like she was storing it but I clearly seen she put it in a tupperware in her personal bag. ALSO, in the contract they DO NOT mention that the food you pay for, the cooks have to eat from that as well. If I paid for 190 plates, I expect for that food to be ONLY for my guests. I did not pay to feed the cooks. They can make extra food on the side but I rather have my guests eat the food I paid for. So she was stealing the food I paid for, and saying we are running out of food, and there was not clearly 190 people at the wedding, there were about 160 so there should of been food extra. In the beginning they sweet talk you and make it seem so accommodating for you but once your wedding day comes its a disaster. Not to mention, we had gone over where we wanted out tables at (gift table, cake table etc) and once I got to the venue a day before the wedding I wanted to move 1 table a few feet away and they gave me attitude and made it so hard to do it so my husband and I had to move the tables because they were annoyed and mad. I would not recommend this place to anyone. My wedding was fun but when it came down to the food, it was total chaos. read more

This is a long overdue review for the Capitol Plaza Ballrooms.We were married here and had our reception in November of 2015. From start to finish, Rosalinda was kind, helpful and an excellent communicator. Things went off without a hitch for our ceremony in the Temple Ballroom, and the Silver Ballroom was a breathtaking spot for our reception. We loved that we could have two very diverse backdrops for our celebration. Guests raved about the food and the uniquely gorgeous venue.The location was great - we loved being in downtown Sacramento, close to lots of great hotels and convenient parking. The building definitely has an "old" feeling to it, especially on the outside, but that isn't bad either. The ballrooms are incredible looking and very large. We used the smaller conference rooms on the fourth floor, which worked great for our forty person meeting. The food was good and always met our schedule, which needed to remain fairly flexible. The price is good, especially for it being so close to the Capitol; just a few minutes walking and you are there. The best part about Capitol Plaza are the staff, who will go out of their way to make sure your event goes smooth and meets your expectations. I can't say enough; Rosalinda and Carlos were literally some of the most helpful and supportive people I've ever worked with for coordinating an event, which can be one of the most important parts of renting a facility. We've been customers for quite a few years and can recommend them based on the high service, large meeting spaces, flexible options and competitive price. read more

We had our wedding reception here. While we did have a nice time overall there was a pretty bad mistake made by the staff. We purchased both champagne and apple cider for the toast. It was agreed in advance that the staff was to offer both options to all our guests however that did not happen. They poured only apple cider for the majority of our guests including the head table. Had we not been charged a pouring fee I may have been able to overlook this mistake but considering we paid extra for this service and they didn't do it right I was not happy. In addition we were out the money we spent on the champagne that didn't get offered to anyone. I attempted to address this with management after the fact but to my surprise they did not offer to make things right. I was pretty disappointed by this and therefore would have to recommend planning your "special" day elsewhere. read more

A big thank you to Rosalinda and staff for making our wedding reception wonderful! We were searching for a venue large enough for our 250 guests on 10/05/13, and The Grand Capitol Plaza Ballroom was perfect. The Grand is the ballroom on J St between 12th and 13th under the maroon awning, separate from the other Capitol Plaza Ballrooms, and easily housed all of our guests and allowed for the party we were imagining. We sat 8 people at each of the 33 tables and there was still plenty of room to move around and did not feel crowded at all, even with two beer pong tables, a large corner bar to serve many people at once, the DJ's setup and lights stayed on stage, the buffet dinner table was up the whole time, and the big dance floor remained un-impacted all night so there was no need to move tables once dinner was done. We absolutely loved the size of the venue when we first walked in, and the price was very surprising - at almost half the cost of other golf courses we were looking at, so the decision was easy. Not to mention working with Rosalinda was great, as she has great knowledge on how to host a wedding reception and pays great attention to customer service. We had many ideas on non-traditional things we wanted to do at our reception, and she was very flexible and helpful in making our dreams come true. Also, since there was no event the night before, she let us set up during normal business hours the Friday prior, and remained very helpful in allowing us to pick up a few things the Monday after. And I almost forgot about the food! Everyone loved the appetizers, and we went with tri-tip, chicken marsala, and pasta station. All were delicious, but the chicken marsala was the surprise: we intended to go with chicken parmesana, but when we had our tasting, the marsala was to die for and our guests agreed! I definitely recommend The Grand to host any event, especially if you need to host a lot of guests and have a great time. Everyone agreed that our wedding reception was fun for everyone, and working with Rosalinda to setup The Grand just the way we wanted accommodated our party perfectly! It has been about four months since our wedding. I am extremely pleased to say it was really the best day i could have asked for. The staff was so attentive and they helped with every aspect from beginning to end. Their integrity came as a surprise as well. I was recently contacted by their staff letting me know we had over payed them and they were trying to get a refund back to me. This was so nice of them. I am so happy to have trusted them because they went beyond my expectations. I got married June 8, 2013 and the weather was not in our favor. The high was 110 that day, the staff did everything they could to make sure our guests were comfortable and they supplied water. They did an amazing job, I truly did feel special from the beginning to the end. The facilities are amazing as well, the vintage feel is all over the place. It's like walking into a fairy tale book. My husband and the best man are food masters, so it was hard to find food that was good enough for our special day. After reading many reviews on the Capital Plaza food we decided to give them a try as well. Enough said my husband would not let us find any other venue. The food was exquisite and we received many compliments from our guests. Highly recommend this venue, and their staff. Rosalinda and Mary are amazing to work with. read more

I had my wedding reception here and I absolutely loved it so did my guest. All of my guests complimented on how amazing this place was. The only thing is the customer service and access for disabled persons. This place has an old elevator that is operated manually only at certain hours, otherwise you have to take stairs. My mom is disabled and every time we had an appointment with Rosalinda, I had to go upstairs and ask her to come down and get my mom and if she wasn't there then we were screwed. Another problem with the elevator was at the day of the reception when was cake was delivered and there was nobody to operated the elevator for 3 hours. I the bride myself had to call Rosalinda to see where she was after the cake delivery person called her numerous times, but she would not pick up. I forgot to mention that not only the elevator was not working, but the whole place was locked. Rosalinda promised me that at the day of the wedding she would be there at 10 am and would be open as this is also their regular bussines day. Another thing is that before we put down the deposit Rosalinda promised that we could stay as long as 8pm the day before the wedding for set up and after deposit it was only until 5pm and after this it was $100 extra. Rosalinda never mentioned any extra charges. If you are disabled think twice about renting this hall as you will be very limited to using the elevator. read more

We had a wedding last week at this place and I cannot say enough about the staff, not to mention the beautiful facility. Throughout this entire 11 months of planning Rosalind and her staff had the patience of a saint, they accommodated every single request, they do all the work exactly as it is requested, they cater to your every need along the way. I was not easy to deal with and they made it look easy throughout. They met with me and/or my vendors whenever needed, and the day of the event went picture perfect. It was a dream come true for my daughter and I cannot thank Rosalind and all of her staff for making this dream come true for her. The food and the bartender were outstanding, the staff walked around and served drinks and cleaned up through the entire reception, they were extremely professional and polite.
