    The Pioneer Kitchen 09-22-2025

Capitol Reef Resort offers unique lodging options! There are Tepees, Conestoga Wagons, cabins, and regular rooms! It's located about 3 miles from downtown Torrey. It is worth the short drive out. It puts you just a little closer to Capitol Reef National Park. We stayed in a regular room, but I would consider a cabin next time. I wouldn't stay in a tepee or wagon, even though they are cool, because the bathroom is in a separate building. On Sept. 22, 2025, we stayed in Room #104 ($166.40 for the night). It was nice. Yes, it is dated, but it was clean. We didn't have a room with a scenic view. It was just steps from the lobby. Parking was almost a hassle, but luckily we found a spot nearby. We had 2 Queen Beds in our room. Very comfortable & we slept well! I appreciated the curtain at the bathroom doorway for added privacy. They have the usual travel size shampoo, conditioner, makeup wipes, & soap toiletries. I was surprised to see they also included travel sized mouthwash & Q-Tips! We walked around the area at night and the next morning. This resort is so beautiful at any time! The soft light emanating from the tents and wagons and the glowing campfires create such a great ambiance! These campfires are only for people staying in these lodgings. S'mores Kits are available from the Pioneer Kitchen. In the morning as the sun rose over the area, it revealed the beauty all around! The Red Rock Cliffs made for an amazing backdrop! We walked to the stable, but the horses weren't there. Then we found the sign pointing us in the right direction. We got to see the horses & Llamas! There was a wild bunny hanging out in the bushes. There is a restaurant at the resort called The Pioneer Kitchen. It is open for Breakfast (7AM-11AM) and Dinner (5PM-9PM). The food is decent and saves you a trip into town. We ate dinner here out of convenience. They have a Pool & Jacuzzi and an Exercise Room. There are some outdoorsy activities available here, too - Llama Trekking, Horseback Riding, & Jeep Tours. You can go Mountain biking and hiking also. By the way, for the Llama Trekking, you lead the Llama which carries your supplies, you don't ride it. Don't miss out on experiencing this cool place!

Capitol Reef Resort is conveniently located right outside of Capitol Reef National Park which was one of the reasons we chose this hotel. The rooms are a bit dated but clean and the view was very nice. There was an alarm clock in the room that was set to 5:45am so we were woken up bright and early... I don't see alarm clocks in hotels very often anymore so we didn't think to check that it was set. Staff should really double check that when they get the rooms ready. Breakfast was absolutely awful and on top of that you have to pay extra for it. My omelet was way overcooked, the spinach was extremely soggy and the potatoes tasted like nothing. The grounds are well maintained and it was enjoyable taking a walk around the property. There are quite a few activities available if you are staying longer. Considering how much we paid I cannot give this more than 2 stars.

Hiking Capitol Reef in the Winter, this place was one of the few restaurants predictably open. Prices were fair. The food was homecooking-tastic! And the warm & friendly service was day-brightening (also predictable, we ate here like 4 times in a few days, and each person was kind & down-to-earth. The place, this heavenly place, is a trip-savior. Cheers!

Nice clean room but this place is definitely not a resort. Well, do have pool, hot tub, exercise room and restaurant. Awesome setting

Word of the day is: definitely. It is situated in very scenic area over looking the reefs. It has on site restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch and dinner and also there is a pizzeria across the street. Few minutes drive up toward south also has several restaurants too. For this place, ended up getting a 1st floor unit in the back facing the reef and being an old motel like setting, you can park your vehicle right at the front. Pros of this is you are very close to your car just in case someone is trying to steal your catalytic converter. However, the noise of people slamming the doors or beeping noise from locking and unlocking cars were kinda annoying. If you are looking for the better view, ask for the room in the back side, preferably on the 2nd floor which are also the same level as the parking lot. There are several options to this resort but the part we stayed were definably a motel side. The furniture and such seems to be newer but definitely C rated or lower. The mattresses were probably the worst I had in last 10 years of travelling. The famous sag in the middle lumpy bad! It was nice seeing lots of pillows but they were all different colors. Some were quite yellow and you can still tell it from the darkly lit room. I bet it is the water in the area so I definitely did not drink the water from the tab. There were also signs of popped nail heads on the wall, chipped paints and exposed screw holes. Someone definitely took the drywall screws and kept it as memento. Definitely need lot more TLC. Rooms were dark with all the lights on. Lights were strategically placed to look very odd and didn't do a dang thing what lights suppose to do. Its the package of two lights for $30 at local box store special. It is situated very close to arches and hiking trails and that is a big plus. Don't be fooled by word Resort. Well, they do have hot tub, pool and exercise room. Is that considered as resort? At least they did not charge resort fees like Vegas hotels do. Do not let my super nice photo of the room fool you. It definitely does not represent what you actually feel.

A lot of choices for you to sleep here including a variety of Hotel rooms, teepees, wagons and cabins. We are staying in a hotel room which is the least interesting of the group but with a bathroom within the room- it's fine for us. People in the Teepees and wagons all have assigned private bathrooms at a short walk from their living quarters that they say are the nicest and cleanest bathrooms they've ever seen. Meeting people and chatting around the fire pits has been very fun as well. We have not tried the restaurant on premises but the Rim Restaurant across the street has been top notch for dinner. All and all a great place to stay.

My boyfriend and I stayed at Capitol Reef Resort on a recent road trip over Easter weekend. We wanted to be as close to Capitol Reef National Park as possible and this fit the bill. While the outside of the resort was not as "fancy" as the website makes it out to be, our room was spotless. The toiletries were heavenly. I loved the goat milk soap so much that I requested another one at the front desk. We were thankful that the restaurant was open on Easter. We got take out and brought it to our room. They even threw in a free serving of ice cream, since it was my birthday. There are a few restaurants in the town of Torrey, but we were too tired to explore the town. The front desk staff was very helpful. I had a lot of questions about which route to take back to Arizona and they provided a lot of great information. This resort offers cool activities such as horseback riding and llama walks. We didn't have time on our short trip to try those activities. Next time!

This place is the ultimate bait & switch! I dont usually get that with hotels, what you see online is usually what you get and you usually can tell between motel/inns vs mid price vs luxury resorts. Capital Reef "Resort" fooled me. It's more like Capital Reef "Motel". It's too good to be true! The photos online make it look so luxurious in the middle of the desert?!?! The moment I walked in it smelled stuffy and moldy. The carpet was dirty. You can feel how old and used everything was. Peeling tables and cabinets. The ceiling of the bathroom is yucky. The bed sunk in and the pillows and so soft and mush! I could NOT wait to get outta here. It made me feel so dirty staying here overnight and I did not sleep well at all. The attached photo from their website made it look so luxurious like you will get high quality sheeting and bedding. Could not be more fake! We stayed on the ground level in the main building and the people upstairs were stomping around. You can hear it when they turned on their shower. Paper thin walls. Oh yeah, I would be careful using their hair dryer. The one I had was zapping blue electricity out..scary! Very old and used amenities. The on site restaurant however had good food. This place also offers Llama hike and Jeep tours which my husband and I did. There are other hotels around town. It's a small little town and not as deserted as I thought it would be with several restaurants nearby. I would recommend staying elsewhere.

    Gorgeous view outside our room.

The motel staff was friendly, the beds were comfy and rooms were clean. Great location for visiting Capitol Reef National park. Would definitely stay here again. I hate saying anything bad about places but the restaurant onsite was terrible! I ordered nachos and it looked like someone threw some chips and shredded cheese and popped it in the microwave. But please don't let this dissuade you from staying here. The motel itself is awesome!!!

On an impromptu trip to Goblin Valley and Capitol Reef, the original plan was to camp. After hiking fifteen miles and realizing we were looking at below freezing temperatures, we decided a hotel sounded like a much better idea. We reconciled ourselves to staying in straight-out-of-Trailer-Park-Boys Hotel Hanksville, but when we pulled in, found they had no vacancy. A frantic online search found Capitol Reef Resort was about an hour away in Torrey, Utah, and we quickly called to reserve. They had one room left (and it was cheaper than reserving through a third party site). Hurray! We arrived tired, cold, and perhaps a tad grouchy, but the young man at the front desk was friendly and sweet as could be. He gave us a packet of papers showing the upcoming weather, activities (fire pit with s'mores!), map, hours for the hot tub (pool is closed in the off season), a menu for the attached restaurant, Pioneer Kitchen, and more! A small convenience store with souveniers, books, snacks, medication, and other sundries resides in the lobby. We opened the door to our room, and were hit with the most delightful warm air! I do not know if this was intentional, but they had turned up the heat full blast, and it felt so cozy and comforting after a chilly evening. The space was clean, with plentiful storage, and a nice restroom. A Keurig and microwave are included. We had dinner and breakfast (a buffet for $10) at Pioneer Kitchen, and while not amazing, it was certainly convenient and satisfying enough. The comforter on the bed was too thin for me, and I ended up sleeping in my jacket, but am sure in the normal season it is fine. In the morning, we enjoyed the beautiful flame rock formations via our balcony, and while not required, I'd encourage you to pay a bit more for a room with access to one (or better yet: a yurt or conestoga wagon!). Check out was easy peasy, and again, the employee at the front desk was cheerful. I felt the price for our stay was very reasonable, but might be less inclined to think that way when they rise during popular times.

My husband and I have reserved a King Cabin at Capitol Reef Resort for 5 days and are wondering if the views are good no matter what cabin, room, teepee, or wagon you stay in?

This is a room that isn't advertised in 3rd party sites and has to be booked on the property website only - it's something like 50% cheaper than the rooms in the hotel. The room comes with unlimited tea, coffee, and hot chocolate from the General Store/Cafe. We were a bit confused with how it worked since other customers have to pay for drinks, but the clerk assured us we could go whenever to get drinks (which we did multiple times!) While we checked in too late in the day to eat at the deli and left too early in the morning for Chuckwagon's famous lunch boxes, we did hit it up in the morning for breakfast pastries, which according to the cashier are all baked in house (and why we were attracted to them in the first place). We were having trouble deciding between the Kouign Amann and the Chocolate Croissant, eventually deciding on the former, but the cashier tossed us the latter for free! What great service! Chocolate Croissant (Complementary, normally $6) - This is a gorgeous looking croissant, golden brown with a drizzle of sweet chocolate on top, still soft and gooey thanks to being fresh from the oven. It's baked hard, so croissant shards fly everywhere while eating. I'd say it's baked a tad too long, so while extremely flaky, the interior isn't quite as chewy as I'd like. The lamination does look quite good from what I can tell after having some difficulty slicing through with a plastic knife. As is traditional, two chocolate batons are baked inside. (5/5) Kouign Amann w/ Cream ($6) - Again, this pastry has a really hard bake, so almost the entire thing shatters easily, except for the stellar caramelized sugar layer covering the bottom. It's hardened, sticky, and sweet with a great crunch factor. The interior is actually correct for a Kouign Amann, which is really surprising for a small-town bakery. It's not laminated nearly as much as the croissant, and instead seems to be a nice enriched brioche interior, albeit not particularly airy and soft in texture due to the bake. There's a really tangy and somewhat sweet cream cheese frosting that's piped into the center. I'd actually prefer the pastry without this extra flourish, but beggars can't be choosers! (5/5) Both pastries are more of a 4.5/5 due to the bake, but the ingredients and technique (other than bake) seem to be well thought out. We were not expecting much from these baked goods given that the Chuckwagon Deli isn't exactly a specialty bakery, but in the end we were extremely surprised by the quality. I'll definitely be revisiting if I'm ever in town again.

They only offer breakfast sandwiches now but it's made to order so we got to choose type of eggs and proteins. It did take a bit a time for them to make it so factor that in when planning your visit. Breakfast was also a highlight, offering a great selection of options including waffles, breakfast sandwiches, cake loaves, oatmeal, fresh fruits, and a wide variety of coffees and teas. Because we used a free Hilton night certificate, the price wasn't an issue for us, but room rates this May were running around $600 a night. For a property commanding that premium price point, there are still a few operational details that need to be ironed out to match the high-end experience they are aiming for: Front Desk & Service: The front desk is currently not staffed all day, which can be inconvenient for a luxury resort. Communication: Communication needs a bit of tuning, specifically updating their welcome email template and ensuring guest text messages are answered promptly. Signage: Physical signage from the main road needs improvement, which is especially important if you are arriving without a working GPS signal. Overall, it is a gorgeous property with excellent bones and great potential. All have different names related to a school setting. There was an interesting front door policy but for the sake of safety I won't write about it. We stayed in the Arithmetic Room. It was clean and ready upon our arrival. We arrived one hour early and were unable to check into our room??? So we went in search of food. It was slim pickings for sure. Torrey is a sleepy town. Many establishments open at 8:00 am and close by 3:00 pm. Some places are closed In the middle of the week. I wish I'd known this before booking a room. Our room was really two rooms with a Jack and Jill bathroom. The decor was what you'd expect in an antique-vibe establishment. As far as beds and pillows, the pillows were too hard for our liking. My mom and I woke up with stiff necks and headaches after the first night. We did check out all the pillows on the other beds and found two that were softer. The actual beds were great. The bathroom was not ADA equipped and was not marketed as such. My mom had a difficult time using that bathroom. We had an excursion that first morning and were being picked up at 7:00 am. Since breakfast is served at 8:30, there would be no breakfast for us. When I informed the owner of this, no other provisions were offered. We were not offered coffee, which ended up being Folgers anyway so no loss there. We were not offered any kind of small snack etc. I even texted the owner the evening of our first night to remind her that we would not be around for breakfast. We were the ONLY party staying at the facility this first night and I wanted to ensure that breakfast was not cooked and wasted due to our absence. In the name of customer service, I was hoping we could grab coffee or tea and a snack and then head out for our excursion. Unfortunately, none were offered. The grounds are well manicured. It is a lot of work to maintain these gardens which were beautiful. My friend is an avid gardner and explained the various varieties of flowers, plants, and shrubs. A deer hung out in the gardens that first day. It's a very serene setting. We had two tv's in our rooms and could pull up Prime, Netflix, etc and watch just about any type of program. We did get breakfast today. It was pretty amazing. We were served gluten free banana crepe/pancakes, cantaloupe, grapes, grass fed beef sausage, poached egg with cheddar cheese and condiments like strawberries and yogurt for the pancakes. Canadian maple syrup was also served. Anyway, I gave this BnB a 3 because we did not feel very welcomed the first two days. We seriously did not see anyone on that first day after that initial meet with the owner around 2:00 pm. We were not asked yesterday about how we slept, were we comfortable, did we need anything etc. In fact, we didn't see anyone yesterday either. Today seemed more welcoming. Just fyi, If you sway more toward the liberal side of life, you will love it here. Here's your sign.

He seems very busy arranging for ATV/UTV rides and fly-fishing trips so we never saw him; his daughter was very helpful with checking us in and explaining everything. We stayed just one night in the Chamisa room, that's a huge third-floor suite with a fine view of the sunrise - actually a required view since there are no shades on that enormous window lol. The bathroom is just across the hall. Comfortable bed, good strong A/C, everything was great. Hotel staff cooked us breakfast right on the dot of 7:30am! Torrey is a tiny town with a lot of character, there's good coffee, good food and very good hiking not that far away. I don't recommend walking there after dark, there's just no safe path. You can ignore the old review comments about Irene and Kim, also the Yelp business description. They sold the business to Shawn and are no longer active here. If you don't mind the cost, I recommend a sunset tour in a utility terrain vehicle ("side-by-side" aka UTV). Adam took us up top a nearby rock formation that let us see all of Torrey, and gave us quick geology & history lessons while we were up there, it was a great time. Finding the Skyridge's entrance dirt road can be a struggle, and they appropriately warn guests that your phone's map will probably fail on the listed address. For what it's worth, this address took me right to the spot, your mileage will vary: "714 SR-24 Teasdale, UT 84773"

We felt like we had the entire place to ourselves...so quiet and relaxing. Hot tub was fantastic. Room was very comfortable and quiet. Amazing star gazing. Breakfast was still delicious, great coffee!! Host was extremely accommodating and helpful! This is the place to stay in Torrey!
