Capri sub They don't have onions so we added our own.
    Maureen M.

We had an errand near by-what luck! My better half had the capri sub specialty. After adding onions he shared with me. Quite delicious! I staved off from buying their heat and eat food. Next time!

But recently I made Italian Stuffed Peppers and decided to use homemade Italian sausage from Capri rather than ground beef that the recipe had in it.

Johnnie's is an icon, just based on the experience of listening to that guy talk. Ah, but he's long gone, and new ownership abounds. But the beef is still great. One of the best beef sandwiches around, combos that are seasoned just right, and Italian ice That hits the spot on a hot summer day. I think the hot dogs are just a throw in, and the fries are decent. But it's the beef that keeps bringing you back. Not much ambiance, unless you want to stand and watch the cars roll by on North Avenue, but the smell of the sausage cooking is intoxicating. The price of the beef has gone up, and I swear it's a tad smaller, but if you're in the neighborhood, nothing hits the spot quite like a Johnnie's beef sandwich. I can still hear the big guy...."Whaddah need, gimmie a beef, wet, sweet and hot, That'l be nine fiffy two, bag it, next!" I miss him...

We ordered it dipped, and the beef was tender, flavorful, and packed with rich gravy without becoming soggy. It lived up to the reputation that so many Chicago locals talk about. The Italian Sausage was also excellent, with great flavor and a nice balance of seasoning. Both sandwiches tasted fresh and authentic. The service was fast, the atmosphere was classic Chicago, and it was easy to see why this place has such a loyal following. If you're looking for a true Chicago Italian beef experience, Johnnie's is absolutely worth the trip.

This is an absolute 5 star place for me. I have been here probably 20-30 times before, yet have not…read morereviewed it. Maybe because it already receives so much positive attention, it hardly needs my two cents. But after this latest visit, I decided to "pile on" with my love for this place. First, I must alert you to pay attention to their hours, because they are closed Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday. I kicked myself at least once, when I made the 40 minutes drive from home, just to find that I forgot that they were closed that day. This store is a double threat - offering a great take home Italian deli with a plethora of fresh and frozen items for you to prepare at home. This is also a great spot for lunch, with legendary sub sandwiches, and an array of hot dishes to choose from. I often do both. On this visit, from the deli, I picked up some of their marvelous, thinly sliced breaded eggplant, which I always get when I'm there. I bring some to my ex-wife and daughter who love it as well. Just give it a quick cook in the oven, and it's delicious. I also got some of their marvelous breaded potato salad, which is old-fashioned homemade style. From the hot bar, I got a couple of Italian sausage and some meatballs. I buy these ready to eat, but take them home to use for dinners later. That way I don't have to cook them. Obviously, they offer both meatballs and Italian sausage in fresh or frozen as well, which I get when I'm preparing my mom's spaghetti recipe. This time, I decided to try a quart of their frozen Nottoli homemade marinara, which I hadn't tried before. So delicious! I had pasta and spaghetti with sausage that night, and pasta and meatballs the next. On my various trips here, besides the Italian sausage that they are famous for, as well as the meatballs, I like their olives and other salad items, the sandwiches, brocciole, and many other hot Italian dishes for lunch. The rigatoni w/vodka sauce is a killer. Finally, the people have always been wonderful , which is very important to me. Despite being busy, it is well organized and you're in and out of there in no time (or you can sit at the table inside if you want to eat in). The prices are extremely reasonable, and I'm always pleased about the value I get for such a good price. I apologize for no pictures on this review. I always just seem to be focused on my own mouth watering choices, as opposed to a Yelp review when I come here.

Markedly below average food. Ordered the rainbow rolls, Grace's teriyaki, Burmese noodle salad, and…read morethe green tea cheesecake. Adequate service and totally unremarkable ambiance. The rainbow rolls consisted of plain, uncooked vegetables wrapped in rice paper, accompanied by peanut sauce as well as a vinegar dip. There was absolutely no taste to the rainbow rolls, and the peanut sauce tasted like peanut butter that had been microwaved for twenty seconds. The vinegar dip was the only thing that salvaged the rolls. The teriyaki did not come as advertised. There were chunks of glazed soy in brown rice - no other veggies in the bowl itself. There was a side salad that I dumped into the bowl to add some crunch and texture. The glazed soy was tasty but the rice was remarkably bland and mushy. This regime of blandness continued with the Burmese noodle salad: some of the flavours had potential and the dish might have been tastier if those flavours were accentuated, but instead it was a bowl of noodles and assorted vegetables with no compelling taste or texture. The cheesecake was both too sweet and remarkably bitter at the same time. It was fine texturally but the sweetness was overwhelming. The layer of tea on top of the cheesecake added some bitterness. The two flavours were totally incongruous. I have never wasted dessert before - if I can't finish it I take it home, but this dessert was so inedible that even at nine dollars it was not worth salvaging. Service was fine and the food came out quickly. The location of the restaurant in downtown Oak Park was nice - there was some sort of music festival going on outside that made an otherwise aggressively mediocre meal more bearable. Overall, I do not recommend this establishment.

At first, I was a little unsure how it worked since there's a service counter, but staff quickly greeted us and showed us to a table. Table service was a pleasant surprise. Our server was friendly and knowledgeable, walking us through an impressively extensive menu. I ordered the Double Medianoche--pulled pork, ham, mustard, Swiss cheese, and sweet pickles, all pressed panini‑style. My friend went with the Pan con Croqueta, a ham and cheese sandwich topped with a ham croquette. For anyone unfamiliar (myself included), croquetas are minced pork that's breaded and deep‑fried. Both sandwiches were solid, but the Medianoche was the clear winner for me--warm, flavorful, and perfectly pressed. With so many options on the menu, there's plenty more I want to try. Friendly staff, good food, and a comfortable dine‑in experience. Definitely worth a stop if you're in the area. There at least two signs advising they will charge 18% gratuity to tables of three or more and will not split checks for three or more.
