We were a table of three, so here's what we ordered....Appetizers: Escargots Petiis Gris in cream sauce (OMG)!, Frog legs (I passed on these, no love for the frog--ever), Studel Danube (so delicious) and Saucisse du jour. Entrees: Salmon au Vert (I picked off the pistachios--don't like those), Duck Confit (2)...so tender and Land Shank Ratatouille (seasoned to perfection). Topped it off with Coffee Ice Cream topped with whipped cream, a yummy Floating Island that had strawberry slices and a silky creme treat on top, chocolate mousse and some expresso. DELICIOUS. What a great experience! We had heard about this restaurant from several friends recently. We were surprised to find out that it has been in business for over a decade. The location is first class just steps from the downtown historic riverfront of the Cape fear River. We entered into the restaurant noticing it's cozy and comfortable feel. We opted to sit upstairs which turned out to be a great decision being that the downstair's area seemed to be much noisier. We were seated by the front window looking out onto Market Street and the horse drawn carriages below. It was very romantic. Our food that we ordered was incredible. We decided on appetizers starting with escargot. It was perfectly seasoned and absolutely delicious! My girlfriend had the mussels in garlic wine sauce. They were excellent as well. We also shared the French onion soup which was one of the best that I have ever had. The real surprise of the evening was a suggestion that we initially thought was odd but decided to try anyway. It was the braised pork cheeks! They were phenomenal. The best experience of all? The prices. Very reasonable pricing for such excellent food. M and I had a great evening at Caprice Bistro on 14-7, which is Bastille Day. We had not been there before, but quickly felt right at home. Many of the customers appeared to be regulars, since they knew each other, and we joined in on the table to table conservations. Since we had never had a martini, we asked for advice and ordered the French 75 Caprice. They were great and the adjacent tables offered to adopt them if they were not to our liking - but they were. M had escargot and salmon and I had frog legs and rabbit (it was a French restaurant) and shared a bottle of Riesling. I've dined at Caprice Bistro several times and have had a positive experience each time. Their food is unique and delicious. I've had salad cou' rouge (with calamari!), escargot, pate maison, duck confit, and more. I have heard their Wednesday rabbit special is to die for, so I will have to come back to try it. The upstairs sofa bar is intimate and great and unlike any other place in downtown Wilmington. Though there is some couch space for larger groups, it is often difficult to get and may cause frustration if you come with a larger group and cannot be seated. They have a decent wine selection and also a delicious list of martinis.You can also sit at the bar. The waitstaff, bartenders, and owners are all excellent. read more

We were looking for a nice dinner with my in-laws and 2 small children. While initially hesitant about taking a 5 and 2 year old here, the experience could not have been better. The server was excellent and offered to make the kids a special menu. The downstairs is cozy, but that just adds to the appeal. The food was great, the grouper was perfectly cooked. The wine selection was robust and we will be going back for a date night. The food prices are very reasonable. This was the second time that my husband and I went to Caprice. First time we went there we loved it so we decided to go back there for my husbands birthday while his parents were in town. Wow. The food and service here are as good as any. I was amazed at the mussels for an app. Calamari was ok, and the Wednesday night entree was rabbit. Having lived five blocks from Caprice for five years, we were no strangers to the sofa bar. I can honestly say that Caprice is our favorite, and I think the best restaurant downtown Wilmington. The food and decor will remind anyone that ever spent nights restaurant hopping in Paris, of Paris. Mussels, frites, steaks, seafood, lamb, and duck are all incredible. Casual or deck out for dinner. This restaurant is a welcome relief from typical beach fare. We wanted light fare so we ate upstairs at the bar, which offers delicious signature cocktails and has a hip but intimate and quiet ambience. The menu was intriguing and offered an intriguing array of appetizers and small plates. We had a hard time deciding, as everything sounded so good. I ordered the tartin with goat cheese, asparagus, and mushroom, which was rich and delicious, and my husband had the escarole baked in a casserole with cheese. Only been here once with a friend who highly recommend the happy hour deals 5-7 Sun-Thurs). Tried it on a weekday nights, and although I only ordered the pork cheeks, it was so delicious with yummy sauce. The proportion is great for a $5 plate. Service was great as well. We went on Saturday night for our anniversary dinner with an 8 o'clock reservation made on open table. We were immediately seated by the most friendly gracious hostess who also happens to be the owner. We had the escargot for an appetizer, my wife got the salmon entrée and I got the trout Caroline. Our waiter showed up right after we finished our appetizer with an order of Pomme Frites on the house. The escargot was the best I have ever had and dipping the bread in the remaining sauce is just fabulous. After finishing this delightful meal we retired to the sofa lounge above the restaurant for a French 75 martini. If you live in Wilmington or traveling to the area and have not visited this fine establishment you are really missing out. There is so much to be said for a restaurant whose owners are also the chef. You get so much more care and attention to the quality of the food you get. You can guarantee I will be back. Completely disappointed. We met friends for dinner here for date night and felt that we were looked down upon as soon as we walked in. We are established professionals and were looking forward to French cuisine. We left the kids at home to enjoy an evening with adults and the waiter spoke to us as if we were the children. He spoke to us as if we didn't belong there which was extremely embarrassing. I don't even remember the food because the customer service was so disappointing. It felt like we were bothering him. I'm not sure what we did that made our waiter be such a snob but I know that I will never go back there. Came in to celebrate our wedding anniversary. Quaint spot that reminded me of the bistros in Paris. The food was outstanding. Just returned from a long weekend in Wilmington. (First visit.) We had some very good meals - Circa 1922 was excellent, Dock Street Oyster Bar was casual and tasty, The Pilot House was good and the Catalan a terrific place for brunch - but I think we enjoyed our meal at Caprice Bistro the most. We ate upstairs in the funkier lounge bar. Good wine list, professional service, friendly owners. I particularly liked the smoked seafood appetizer - a good variety of tastes and textures. Entrees were all very well prepared - and the frites were just right - reminded me of the frites in Brussels or Paris. And last but not least - compared with big city prices - it was a real DEAL. For french food in Wilmington, this place delivers...over and over and over again. I have never had any food here that wasn't delectable! I always sit upstairs for a more casual, relaxed environment. My husband and I ate here during a stay in Wilmington upon a recommendation from our B&B owner--and it was one of the best meals we have EVER eaten. We have both traveled a lot and this was a top 3 meal for us. My husband has eaten at some of the finest French establishments like Daniel in NY and Jules Verne in Paris, and he said the food is better at Caprice Bistro. We weren't quite ready with our wine selection when our server Gwendowlyn came to take our drink order, and she did a fantastic job of helping us select just the right red. We started with the Tuna Crudo which was served 2 ways: barely seared carpaccio style and tartar style with the lightest fried wontons and a pineapple soy reduction--an amazing starter for less than $7. For dinner, we had the Steak au Poivre and the Boeuf Bourguingon. Both dishes were out of this world. We are looking forward to our next trip to Wilmington just so we can return to Caprice Bistro for another great meal! read more

Maybe I'm a little over-enthusiastic, but I believe this bistro to be the diamond of downtown Wilmington. I venture upstairs for the art exhibits, but I can really only judge the dining room-- and it is a superb experience. The beer options are extensive, and the wine menu shifts well with the seasons. Now to the grit of the thing: the food. The food is always good, authentic, and well presented. My last dish was a delicious trigger fish, fresh as fresh can be. I also reccomend the grouper or the waterzooie. If you prefer a meat, my wife swears by the pork tenderloin or the duck (depending on her many moods). Don't forget their amazing dark roast coffee after the meal, and split a dessert if you are on a date. The service is quick and stealth rather than social, and I appreciate spending my dinner with my wife and not a waiter. The proprietor is super friendly and embraces us everytime we come.
