Overall, the food was good, but the service lacked basic manners and communication. I'm vegetarian and also have food allergies, so clear communication is especially important to me. I need to understand exactly what I'm being served, and the restaurant needs to understand my dietary restrictions. I asked our waiter what came on the cheese board (Plateau de Fromages), and his response was simply, "It's a plate of cheese." I found that very condescending because I obviously understood that, I had specifically asked what was on the cheese board. Regardless of having dietary restrictions, I think a majority of people would know what comes on the cheese board given there is no information on the menu. He eventually told me it included three types of cheese, candied pecans and nine-grain bread. However, when it arrived, it also had crostinis, apples, a strawberry, and some type of Jell-O-like item that appeared as though it could contain gelatin. None of those items were mentioned when I specifically asked what was included. We also ordered a crepe to try, which was good. My husband ordered a dish that he enjoyed, and I ordered the Plat d'Oeufs. When ordering, I clearly requested over medium eggs and asked for the sausage to be placed on a separate plate. He responded by saying, "so you want eggs and sausage"and then asked what type of eggs I wanted, so I assumed he hadn't heard my request about the sausage and repeated it. He cut me off and said, "I got that. What type of eggs do you want?" His response felt unnecessarily dismissive, especially since I was simply trying to make sure my dietary restrictions were understood. When my food arrived, the eggs were over hard and almost completely cooked through. I politely explained that I had ordered them over medium. He responded, "Oh, so you want them softer?" I said yes. When he brought the replacement eggs, he made another unnecessary comment, "You wanted them "over easy," even though they were actually much closer to over medium. The food itself wasn't bad, and I certainly wasn't blaming our waiter for how the eggs were cooked, he wasn't the person preparing them. The issue was his attitude and the unnecessary comments throughout the meal. What could have been a nice dining experience was ultimately overshadowed by service that felt condescending, dismissive and unnecessarily rude. In the photo you can tell the egg was not cooked over medium. It was cooked all the way through.

the hostess warmly received us, offering the window table on their banquette as we arrived. it was 6pm and we enjoyed a marvelous living theater of the street outside, watching downtowners walking dogs, moving from desk to bar, jogging, or riding the horse-drawn carriage for a tour (probably the finest window in downtown wilmington). my wife was beautiful and happy, reviewing the menu and sipping a mohito, freshly muddled mint wafting across the table. our lively waiter explained the specials, cracked a coupl'a jokes, and we ordered the first course: spinach salad and curried mussels. mussels are something of a culinary religion in the bistro menu, and man does Caprice nail them! yellow curry pushed and pulled the mussels like a spirited dance partner, allowing the mussels their own flavors, then enhancing them. the spinach salad was good, the fresh leaves like crisped butter pushing lightly bitter notes against a very good Roquefort cheese and sweetened walnuts. for the entree my wife had the plat du jour--lapin au moutarde. the rabbit was perfectly prepared, and a hint of smoky pork-salt extracted the nuanced flavors of the meat. the mustard notes were pleasantly subtle, infused with a buttery white wine. the sauce coated a fresh fettucine, perfectly al dente and flavorful in itself. i had the bistro steak. pomme frites arrived with the teres major steak, seasoned and grilled then served with a bordelaise reduction. pink and tender on the inside while nicely charred on the outside, the beef was amazing. the baked, herbed tomato and sauteed carrots were also delicious, that innate sweetness working the meat's earthier elements. dessert was a simple, traditional faire (by choice). my wife ordered the crème brulee, vanilla, with the crisp skin of the caramelized sugar cracking nicely beneath the spoon. my choice was also delicious, (though I caught some jokes for the simplicity of my dessert palette)the eternal "dame blanche." while vanilla ice cream is timeless and not very exciting, add the chef's belgian chocolate and freshly whipped cream (amazing!) and voila--a beautiful dessert. a cup of dark coffee, procured from a regional coffee roaster, poured dark and deep to make the meal a fine success. while my palette may be less advanced in some selections, the fundamentals of cooking are well-represented and are, infact, feted at caprice bistro. even a basic selection, whether beef or vanilla ice cream or coffee, becomes a multilayered, intricate flavor-map of culinary traditions of the French bistro. highly recommended!! read more

Caprice Bistro Review: Disappointing Service and Lackluster Food - Not Worth the Visit My wife and I visited Caprice Bistro in Wilmington, NC last night to celebrate our anniversary, hoping for a memorable evening. Unfortunately, our experience was far from what we expected. Our evening began on a positive note: the hostess seated us promptly, and a busboy quickly brought us water. Our waiter arrived soon after, explained the specials, took our drink orders, and then came back to deliver our drinks and take our dinner orders. He promised to return with bread, but that was the last we saw of him all night. After about 20 minutes, a bartender, not our waiter, brought our meals. I inquired about the bread, which eventually arrived, but by then, the service had already begun to sour. I ordered the Steak Frites, expecting a high-quality meal given the $42 price tag. What I received was a thin, flavorless ribeye that was tough and chewy. The lack of a proper steak knife made it even more challenging to eat, and I had to flag down a staff member just to get one. Throughout our meal, not a single person checked on us to see if we needed anything - not even another beer or a water refill. We finished our dinner and waited, hoping someone would come by to clear our plates or offer dessert. That didn't happen. We noticed that the couple next to us, who were also celebrating their anniversary, were similarly neglected, as was another table nearby. After waiting far too long, I finally went to the bar to ask for our check. What was meant to be a special evening ended in disappointment. The inattentive service and mediocre food made for a regrettable dining experience. Caprice Bistro failed to deliver on all fronts. Given the many great restaurant choices in Wilmington, I highly recommend choosing another establishment for a better dining experience. Save your money and your evening - Caprice Bistro is not worth it. read more

Me and my wife went there on the 1st of January, after finding out that the Brazilian Steakhouse in Wilmington is closed for business. We were in a mood for steak. So I recommended to try out Caprice Bistro as I've heard good things about it. From the moment we stepped in, we were not disappointed. First off, it is a nice, cozy atmosphere that doesn't make you feel intimidated or like you're out of place. You feel like you found a nice niche. The decorations are very tasteful and French style of the 30's. Yet very subtle, and not "Francais" to your face. The service is as discrete as it is precise, knowledgeable and courteous. We never had to fill up ourselves our glasses from the bottle we ordered. Everybody was hard at work, without ever looking busy, or taking away from the cozy and relaxed atmosphere. Now to the food. The tomato tarte tatin was wonderous. I wish we had ordered two instead of just one. Then the steak.... Oh, my friend, suffice it to say, I have been to a lot of places, but this is is the best steak I've ever had. Medium rare means medium rare here, nice tenderloin cut, and the sauce au poivre, so delicious. We had a bottle of wine with my wife, but at the end of the meal, it felt like we merely had one glass, so good was the food. Will be back for sure! read more

First off, we were upstairs, the server, Katie was excellent and the bartender makes one the finest Old Fashions I have ever experienced, overall the staff is great. We have enjoyed many fine meals at Caprice. This is about steaks we were served. Two of us ordered the Steak Frites. I asked the appx weight and Katie guessed 12 to13 oz. These were both asked to be cooked med rare. What arrived at the table was a small thin strip steak maybe 7 to 8 oz, undercooked and very lean. I have to guess this was "Select" in grade, I did not expect "Prime" for $35, that said, "Choice" was expected. It was chewy with no flavor. The frites were limp. There was a small portion of vegetables spooned on the plate. This is the second time I have been disappointed with the steak, last time was 3 / 4 months ago but I thought I would give it another try. We have had so many nice meals at Caprice. Next time skipping the steak and going with old reliables, Salmon, Waterzooi or the Duck Confit. read more

This place is amazing... it's very quiet and you'd almost miss it if it weren't for the "Sofa Bar" sign in the window. This gem has lovely, authentically French owners and the prices are really a steal for having such great food. If you're a meat lover, you won't regret ordering the filet with the mushroom sauce (I hate mushrooms and I still order this sauce - it's that good). The filet also comes with pommes frites which are awesome! Each entree comes plated with fresh veggies that are so tasty -- normally that's the part of the meal that you'd skip right over, but everything on the plate at Caprice is delicious. Great wine selection and my fiancée loves their fish entrees as well. Head upstairs to the sofa bar after dinner and have a martini... this is definitely one of the best restaurants in town. read more

My wife and I dined on Friday night. In short, the food was great and the owner was very attentive when we arrived and shortly after. However, the service was C grade. It started very strong but by desert it seemed that the waiter had abandoned us. We had to catch another waiter to refresh our drinks. When we asked for our check after dessert, he barely gave us a look. If not for that, this would have been a 5-star rating. I would highly recommend it for good food at reasonable prices. read more

But the true standout was the seafood waterzooi--absolutely incredible flavorful. The drinks were also excellent, and the service was top-notch from start to finish. Still a fan of this spot, and it's still overlooked among the other major restaurants in Wilmington, but the food hasn't been quite as flavorful the last few trips here. A couple of the side dishes aren't as imaginative as they used to be -- my gut tells me that this is a reflection of trying to cut down on some costs. This is a nice little French restaurant that seats just enough people to keep it at a moderate noise level. The food is delicious the soups are made fresh daily. They have a great selection of wines and the service is always very friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We came in without a reservation and there was a 30 min wait, but they have all these cute little cocktail tables where you can scan a QR code and they bring the drink to your cozy little table - no fighting though the bar or flagging down a bartender. It was awesome. The highlight of the experience though is the service! We were greeted by the most upbeat and eager to serve people I have ever met. Our waiter, Garrett, was so good! He made great menu suggestions, and even gave us some amazing sight seeing recommendations as we are from out of town. Our water and drinks were never empty and you never had to look for your server because he and the serving assistant were already there to help. I would HIGHLY Recommend this restaurant. We shared a bottle of Whites Bay Sauvignon Blanc. We mentioned to the waitress that it could have been a touch colder (we like it icy) and after pouring us a small glass each she took it back to the blast chiller to cool it down more. It came back cooler and we put it on ice at the table. One of our favorite ways of eating sharing small plates. We started with a dozen oysters (6 from NC and 6 from SC). They were very good and the sauces that came with them were a nice compliment. Next was a nice arugula salad with some goat cheese. It was perfect for the 2 of us. Then came the "mains". We had Octopus with polenta. Not tough or chewy and the polenta was a nice compliment. Mussels in a nice white whine sauce were nice an garlicky and the bread that came with for sopping up the broth was perfect. Final "main" was beef tartare with a marrow bone. My partner does not like marrow so it was all mine and it was spectacular. Finished the night with a mini creme brulee that we shared. It was served in a little demi cup and it was just the right size bite. Our table was on the 2nd floor and it was a great atmosphere. Even though it was full, the room was not too loud that we couldn't have a nice conversation. Here is the best part. Our server, Nikki, was one of the best we have had at any restaurant. A little personality, just attentive enough and brought out our dishes just as we had asked them to come out. Couldn't ask for any better. Was our experience cheap?
