Even though I had this place bookmarked for years, I never visited when I lived in Broward. I decided to make reservations here for our 10th wedding anniversary, since we were in town for a birthday party. I even received a voicemail and text message from Caps the day of. Our reservation was at 9pm and the voicemail had requested we be at the dock at 8:45pm. Howe, when I called back, she requested I be at the dock by 8:30pm. We decided to take an Uber to the dock since it was our first time visiting. Luckily, there was another couple who joined us at the dock who have visited Caps previously. There was a young kid who docked his boat at the dock, which was confusing but the Caps boat came shortly after and chased that other boat away. We were greeted by the captain and welcomed aboard. I wish the ride was longer but still nice anyway. Fun fact, after residing in Florida for 15 years, this was my first boat ride in the state! Since we arrived early, we decided to head to the bar first. We had no idea it was separate from the restaurant. I am glad we went though because it was awesome! Talk about stepping into history! Luckily there were only 4 patrons-2 at the bar and 2 at a table. The bartender greeted us and offered us drinks. I ordered an extra dirty martini and hubs ordered a beer. We made our way to the restaurant close to our reservation. The host greeted us, led us to a table, and wished us a happy anniversary. Our server soon after greeted us. Even though we had our drinks still from the bar, we ordered a bottle of wine. That was quickly brought over & served to us. We then attempted to place our order and when hubs ordered chicken (he does not eat seafood), we were informed they ran out. We were very sad and the only item hubs was interested in was the hearts of palm salad. I ordered the crab cakes entree with the loaded mashed potatoes and vegetables. We also ordered a house salad with extra dressing. The food arrived quickly and everything tasted good. The crab cakes came highly recommended by the woman we were on the boat with and I'm glad I took her word. They were super filling though and I barely got through it. The mashed potatoes were good but I think I was expecting something insane with the description of loaded lol. The Palm salad was good but holy crap-it was $20! We ordered a slice of key lime pie for dessert because my sugar was dropping and it was really good. Our server even delivered it to us with a little candle for our anniversary! cap's is an extremely unique experience with amazing food. you have to take a 5-minute ferry to get to the actual restaurant and once you're there, you are immersed in a historic building with a lot of old decor. the staff is all super friendly, and the food was incredible! the crab cakes were my favorite! the scallops, calamari, and caprese salad were also very good. the key lime pie was delicious, the perfect balance of sweet and sour. i would highly recommend cap's!! read more

Food was sub par ! Except the crab cake a handful of delicious Jumbo Lump delicious! I spent my life in the restaurant business as an owner and also a distributor sales manager for the largest company in the business so my perspective is based on knowledge of food and preparation but I digress... uber expensive 3rd tier seafood in a classic rundown cabin. Service was spot on drinks were good but 65 buck for four well drinks. I'm here for four months and dine out 70% of the time so many great choices but the friggin boat ride which is five minutes was the deciding factor! on the reservation we mentioned the anniversary with no metion from host or waiter! no big thing ! shit food other than crab cake and pie! shit food $$$$$ read more

The ferry needs to be refurbished. Captain was great! Water was leaking inside not a deluge but the cover needs to be replaced. Our server Melissa was great and she made excellent Martini's! We had Calamari with various sauces. My Escargot was good however it needed more garlic. Warm delicious bread and butter. We ordered the seafood platter however the Scallops were not prepared properly, they were fried and Scallops should have a beautiful sheen when prepared properly. Expensive entree's but not prepared with any seasoning or flair. Very boring presentation on our seafood platter,French Fries were soft not crispy. Needs to be updated. read more

Great place to eat!! Went here to watch the LHP boat parade and it was a great time! The fried snapper was excellent!!! I wish they included the entire thing from head to tail though. The sauce that came with it was so delicious and made the entire dish. Mashed sweet potato's were indeed sweet ! The boat driver recommended the crab cakes and they did not disappoint. Went to Cap's tonight for the first time in 35 years and was a little hesitant due to recent reviews saying it's gone downhill. Well, those reviews are just wrong. We stopped at the bar for a cosmo and an old fashioned before heading into the restaurant. Our server, Benita, was an absolute gem. So attentive and friendly and gave us a ton of great trivia about the place. We started with calamari and escargot - both to die for. I had the crab cakes (amazing) with a wonderful side of mashed sweet potatoes. So good. My husband got a giant piece of mahi mahi that was the best I've ever tasted. I really wanted key lime pie but we were too stuffed in a good way. I'm so glad we gave Cap's a chance because we will definitely be back! read more

Ok here we go .... The Boatride to restaurant was pleasant, driver very short and curt - no manners - scenery very nice . My party and I walked to the restaurant- it is very rustic - lots of history but place smells like an old cabin . I had the unfortunate of being acknowledged by a miserable woman -older blonde - who was absolutely the rudest person I've met in the hospitality industry - come to find out -it was the owner- Tilly . Tilly was no help and did not make any of us feel comfortable. The other employees always expressed " it's just her way" - well , her way doesn't work . If had been alone I would have walked out . Luckily , She was not waiting on us just tortured everyone that walked in . Dan , our waiter , was ok - appeared to be impatient even though he indicated he had been there 20 years . There was another " helper" named Annette , a woman who is a snowbird and going back to NY for the summer was absolutely lovely . The food , very expensive. Our starters , Hearts of Palm Salad , $24 - too much mayonnaise and lacked salt . The Crabcake was fantastic. My entree , along with 3 other of my guests, was Snapper - excelled flavor just overcooked it was accompanied by delicious mashed potatoes. I have never been treated so poorly. The captain of the boat was not only rude, but he grabbed my arm in anger because one of our guests stepped on the boat before he was ready, even though he gave zero directions. The hostess was so rude to not only us, but to other parties. She seemed to be happy to be rude. We went to the bar before dinner and the bartender was also rude. We literally thought maybe we were on Candid Camera or someone was playing some kind of joke. It did not seem real. The food was good, but our night was ruined. We were so anxious. The drinks were expensive-$14 for a glass of wine (whole bottle in the grocery store is $12). The menu has very little variety. One crab cake was $25. We had to ask for roumalaide sauce, which was served in a plastic to go cup. Crab cake was small and tasteless. Three of ordered the seafood platter for $40-ish dollars, and everything was completely overcooked--very rubbery and tasteless. If you wanted a side salad-$14.50-no joke. Our bill for 4 with an appetizer-one person doesn't drink-was $320 pre-tip. Morton's prices with Denny's quality food. Wow! Is all I can say. A true surprise. Overall we give the restaurant four stars. The seafood is well prepared. This is not red lobster where everything seems overcooked. So, I can understand some of the negative comments. At one point a long time ago this restaurant received awards and many accolades. It is known for its history being from the 1920s. Although it has charm and some nice views of the intercoastal it needs to have the menu updated as its heavy, tired and rather bland. The shrimp on the seafood platter were over cooked and dry dry. Cap's was recommended to us by a local who told us about this unique restaurant. First, you are shuttled to the island restaurant by a water taxi. Captain Joey was adept at driving that thing! Second, this place was obviously very old as there was not one straight wall outside. It was like being in a nautical fun-house. Third, our waitress Melissa was warm and funny. She was like a floor show all in herself. And fourth, the food was outstanding. We had a killer crab cake and escargot to start; my wife had scrimp scampi over pasta and I had a fried red snapper which was perfectly done. The place was hoping on a Friday night and without reservations, we waited almost an hour. Understandable but the hostess was anything but hospitable! She was short with us and jumped on us as we went back inside to be out of the wind that 'it's not even 10 minutes'! Yikes, I was paying to eat there, she could have been nicer. The bartender wasn't very friendly either, neither the hostess or the bartender eked out even the smallest of smiles. It was busy but if it's too busy for them or they were too old, maybe get more help. We made reservations for Valentines Day at Cap's Place at my request. I have wanted to return here for several years as I came many years ago and loved it! I remembered most of the history behind this 100 year old establishment, once a speak easy and casino, especially that surrounding prohibition with much more information located online. It was hard to find parking on Valentine's Day at the off sight location where a small boat picks you up. We had to wait for a second boat because of the many arriving Valentine customers like ourselves! It was just as I remembered, old and rustic but well maintained. We were seated immediately at a table in a back room with a view of the intercostal on one side and small Lake Placid on the other. We enjoyed the sunset view and were greeted by our server LJ who explained everything in detail. All the other dining rooms looked filled. We started with their specialty Hearts of Palm salad and i ordered a sautéd whole split yellowtail snapper with mashed sweet potatoes. My boyfriend ordered the crab cakes and steak fries. Both came with a vegetable of the day. Our salad and hot rolls came out first. The food is made fresh to order so it took a little while to arrive. We were both very happy with our meals. The home made key line pie sounded good but we were too full. After dinner, we stopped at a small building where the bar and bathrooms were located and got to see more of the history and memorabilia all over the walls. We boarded our little boat back to the parking lot happy and satisfied having enjoyed a romantic delicious valentine's dinner. We will return on a less crowded day! read more

My daughter took me to Cap's for my birthday I love Crab Cakes.. she said they have the best crabcakes anywhere. I must agree they were amazing. The hearts of palm salad $18 ish was however, very underwhelming sliced hearts of palm mayonnaise and paprika... I definitely could've passed. Our waiter tall gentleman dry since humor was great. It's been several years since our last visit. The boat ride from the parking lot to the "island" was OK but the captain didn't speak or tell us the story of Cap's Place like before. The greetings by the hostess and server were friendly and made us feel welcome. Our server, Benita, did a nice job being informative about the menu, being talkative, and being efficient. This place has me torn. It's the kind of place that the ambiance and history make it what it is. Otherwise, it's just ok. The parking lot is located at the yacht club and you take a very quick boat ride (3 min or so) over to the bar and restaurant. We were seated at our reservation time and ordered drinks. Server was dry humor but kind and started off very attentive. We had the heart of Palm salad and calamari as appetizers. Heart of Palm salad was good- unique- but not over the top outstanding. It needed salt (an easy tweak table side). The calamari was very good, fresh and clean oil was used. My son devoured it. We all had fish entrees - broiled- w varying sides. My son had their pasta and loved it. The service took a big dip when our waiter was assigned a huge table about half way through our meal. There was also a woman having a medical issue and they had to relocate our table. They handled it discreetly, but I was a little shocked they didn't offer us a drink or free appetizer to compensate for us having to move rooms mid meal and the distractions occurred. (Happy to report- She was ok!) Our entrees took a very long time and getting the waiter's attention after moving rooms and the large party arrival was almost impossible. We got key lime pie to go and it was very very tart. Didn't get packed w whip cream but that would have helped cut the tart and we saw it served w whip when on plates at the restaurant. The nicest part of the restaurant is being able to catch a ride on the boat to the location. Food was extremely bland pasta was dry and for $45 dollar dish you better blow my mind. Escargot was yummy. Our mash potato was under seasoned food over all was disappointing especially for the cost. Servicer was missing most of the time table next to us got annoyed he had disappeared for such a long time. The famous hearts of palm salad was literally just fresh hearts of palm sliced with mayo and a very small amount of paprika, definitely a skip for me, but I can understand the appeal for hearts of palm lovers. If getting the seafood platter, I would recommend getting it blackened over fried or char-grilled. I loved the ambiance. The restaurant was in a wooden cabin/shack that you have to go on a short (free) boat ride to get too. On the ride back, we were given blankets because it was at night during a cold front. Staff were polite, but blunt and straightforward which I suspect is why some reviews said they were rude. And there was a very sweet cat on the porch, so bonus points for that. read more

The service overall leaves you wondering why you paid $75pp to have a subpar experience from a general ambiance and how the front and bar treat you. We had 6 of us for dinner. Arrive early to have a drink at the bar and the 5 minute boat ride. Tip the boat Captain. There are cats and you are not allowed to pet them. Lots of rules here. Posted everywhere. Oh my, what an unexpected surprise. We were in the area and looked up in Yelp for a waterfront restaurant. Picked Cap's place, parked and thought we were going a little nuts because we couldn't find it. Friendly neighbours then explained the boat shuttles customers to the island restaurant. We should have known, the name kind of gave it away. High tide, cool weather and huge full moon. Perfect night. We had not booked so went to the bar for a drink. The wait time was a lot shorter than we were told. We were greeted by Melissa, she shared a whole lot of specials that were not on the menu but we had already understood that the crab cakes were a must have. They did not disappoint. The best I have ever tasted. We had the scallops wrapped in bacon, the palm heart salad (special), the fish mix main course, and home made key lime pie. Melissa went out of her way to share the history of this iconic location. She is one of the specials of the place. Thank you. I wanted to love the place but it fell short of my expectations! The menu was surprisingly small with few choices, but I chose the Seafood Platter with fries. Starters were Calamari and Escargot with Martinis. The appetizers were bland with no seasonings, and the Seafood platter included Scallops, Shrimp and Mahi Mahi; all of which were lack luster; bland and fried too hard. Finally had a chance to check out this local landmark in Lighthouse Point. Caps place has been around since the 1920's and I can see why. Be sure to make a reservation in advance, there are only about 12 tables. To get to the restaurant you have to take a water taxi, It's about a 3 minute smooth ride. If it is a rainy day, I do not recommend but they do have umbrellas if needed. The place does look like a hole in the wall but we all know the best food comes from places like this. We arrived early so we could spend some time at the bar. No fancy cocktails, this is a real old school bar. When our reservation was ready we headed to the hostess stand in the other building. Our server brought some delicious warm bread and explained the specials along with other items not listed on the menu. Note, the menu specifically says "Good food takes time, all food is prepared to order". We started with the blackened Mahi bites. So fresh, tasted like it was caught that morning. I also got a house salad, the creamy garlic dressing is to die for. For entrees we both got the crab cakes. They were full of lump crab meat with a touch of dill flavor. They included a side of green beans that were definitely canned but they seasoned well & horseradish mashed potatoes that I really enjoyed. For dessert we saved room for the Lime Pie.
