I gave it one star because I had to. First off the place was just dirty/sticky feeling. Once we sat and received our drink orders they were wrong. Our daughter noticed ants crawling on the window by her shoulder then my son noticed them under his drink. By this point im so disgusted none of the food tasted good. I had been wanting some of there Seafood all day. I get there and they give me recycled French fries. There was ketchup on my fries when they brought them out. I then asked to speak to a manager and her told me that that was not possible. I'm puzzled because if I didnt do it and the kitchen staff didnt do then who did it? Exactly. The customer who's basket it was before they put my fish in it. He did not apologize not compensate me. I am very professional and the managers customer service skills were horrible. Nor do I like to leave negative reviews but when server says "you've got 10min" at a sea food restaurant during a busy conference week if the year it can't be great. I've eaten at every Captain Benny's in Houston and never leave Houston without eating there. The Austin location needs closed down and gives Captain Benny's a terrible perception of the Houston locations. Our food was not as we had ordered, hair was on the 1st plate, the oysters were served in water vs. an ice bed, Michelada tasted like tomato juice (no lime or salt included and was served with ice cubes?- it was disgusting), our server didn't know what worstershire was and tried to tell me my flounder was stuffed that's why the lines were cut into it, I could go on but you should get the point a terrible dining experience....Mean while instead of providing training to our server the rest of the servers and manager stood 5' feet away and watched him bomb our entire service.... Definitely won't be going back to this location and look forward to going back to the Houston locations. read more

I wish I could tell you something about the food, but unfortunately we were never provided with any service and I didn't get a chance to order. Went in for the first time last Friday around 5:30, the place was half empty, we were told to sit wherever we would like. We grabbed a table right across from the host stand. We waited and watched server after server walk by, look at us, and just keep going. The hostess would occasionally look over at us and go back to twirling her pen and chatting with whoever was standing nearby. Never got a menu, never heard a word from a server, and after 10 minutes we got up and left. As we walked out, the hostess looked right us and then just went back to twirling her pen, obviously not concerned. As we got in our car, we saw one of the servers who ignored us coming out for a smoke break, so clearly there was no sense of urgency there. Too bad. We live close by and I love seafood, but we'll never go back. read more

Food was pretty good. Got a dozen oysters for $10 and all the food was fresh. The only problem we had was an aggressive patron who demanded we give him money because his car got totaled, he was from san antonio...with his wife etc. When i wouldn't give him the $12 dollars he wanted he got in my face and said "I got kids man!!" He got real ghetto and in my face but backed off when I told him I was from Detroit. What he didn't know is I saw him and his buddy ordering tons of food when I was inside and they were ordering everything on the menu........... this place was not bad :) it's a really good place if you want po boys and popcorn shrimp. the oysters were not bad and they were inexpensive. i had the coconut shrimp but you need to ask for the tartar sauce. i think it was a good experience because it's 80 degrees and you can sit outside under an umbrella. service could be a little more friendly and we were waiting for water, but it isn't a deal breaker. your experience may vary. however, it is a good, cute, and cheap place. i know they have locations in houston too, so, my parents will be returning when they get back home. good place to take your parents if they love seafood but not like perla's pricing. read more

Very good gumbo, all fried items done very well, love the shrimp po-boy. The guys that wait on you in the "boat" section are always friendly and helpful. I agree with another poster who said they wish there was one down south. For what this place is, it does it really well...fried fish with all the fixins. read more

I've been eating at Captain's since they were located on North 183, which is about 31 years. They consistently have the best fried shrimp in town. It is battered and cooked right in front of you! The shrimp are battered with a light cornmeal batter and seasoned just right. They also serve fabulous catfish, boudain (sp) and gumbo. In fact, I've never had anything I didn't think was great. Several Sundays ago I thought I'd give C B's a 4th try. Service was good. Gumbo was very good but they're stingy with it. The soft-shell crabs were priced reasonably but looked like two run over, deep fried frogs on the pavement. Inedible. The fries came out of a bag and were underwhelming as were the hushpuppies. Adam Baker is the owner and lacks customer service, so I now understand why his staff treated me and my clients like they did. Cold food, we had to go back inside to order more cocktails, as the waiter disappeared. I'm quite disappointed and will never go back. I've been a loyal customer to Captain's for over 7 years. Went for dinner, won't be back. The tilapia specials were worded poorly and the broiled tilapia was greasy and bland, it literally left a bad taste in my mouth... I ate one bite and continued to only eat my toast and rice. When the server collected my plate he threw everything on my plate away and didn't bother to ask if I liked it since just about everything was STILL ON my plate. My sister got the Shrimp Lovers Special and only liked the dirty rice and stuffed shrimp. The butterfly shrimp were as thin as battered and fried tortillas. I tried Captain Benny's to satisfy a craving for fried shrimp. It didn't satisfy it. The shrimp, coated in cornmeal, were butterflied and pounded very thin. They were somewhat dry and in no way succulent. I've had better with panko-coated shrimp out of the frozen food section of the grocery store. Horrible service for mediocre food... The restaurant is seat yourself, so initially we say at a table in the back of the restaurant because it was the only one open. It was freezing cold! And after the waiting for our server for about 10 min we saw that there was extra seating on the back patio. No one was out there so we thought we'd ask if we were able to sit out there, to get out of the cold. The hostess told us that would be fine and someone would be with us shortly. So we went out there and took our seats, 15 minutes later and no server had even come out to check on us or offer us drinks or menus, I went back inside and asked a second time nicely if there were servers they go to the back patio and of course once again the hostess said yes "I'm sorry will be with you shortly". 15 more minutes outside still no server, no drinks, no menu. At this point we should've left but we did drive 30 minutes to get here thinking that the food was going to be outstanding. So I walked back inside and asked once again if the server would serve us outside, I let the hostess know that we've been waiting outside for 30 minutes now and that we still haven't gotten off for drinks or menus. So she let the server who was supposed to be taking care of outside and it took another 10 min before she came out and helped us and mind you it was not even a busy night (Having been a server, I would have understood if this was the case). then this woman came outside and have the nerve to have an attitude with us asking us are "y'all ready or what". We had the oysters on the half shell and we shared a shrimp basket. The oysters were good, but the shrimp could've been seasoned a little better and the fries were cold. I was so disappointed because I was really expecting this place to be so good from what everyone was telling me. Definitely won't be returning. read more

This place is great for crispy, fried catfish. They have the whole fish as a menu item and as far as I'm concerned that is the only way to go. The fish is breaded with cornmeal and is light, fresh tasting, and greaseless. Not a drop of cooking oil could I detect on my platter. Sides are nothing special. This would be four stars from me but the shrimp were a little over-cooked and much better gumbo is found in the same neighborhood at Quality Seafood, but the fried oysters were fine. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Stay away from the stewed or cajun stuff and stick to the fried catfish. read more

Would never eat here again. Bartender wears gloves, cooks dont. Shrimp had no flavor and peeled away fried flour from scallops to avoid ruining those. The oysters were ok-fresh, the fish basket was a little too greasy. Gumbo was ok. I do agree on some other posts that they seem a little bit stingy on some things. They tried to save little things like small pieces of oysters and tried to make the fries look like a lot when you can clearly tell it's just that much. One of my favorite shanty style seafood restaurants. After all, I've been eating here since it was on Hwy 183 near N Lamar and it was just called Captain's. Lots of food at a great price. I NEVER write Yelp reviews, as I am a server and I know how people nitpick. Unless the place is amazing and I want to help negate any bad reviews. I downloaded the Yelp app specifically to review this place. I have never felt more unwelcome in a restaurant in my life. The server (probably the one previous reviewers thought was maybe stoned) clearly hates his job and doesn't even pretend. We were staying at the Marriott next door and thought the place seemed cool. I asked if he had a beer list and he sighed and rattled off the list so fast I just picked the one I actually heard that wasn't Bud or Miller. We asked what he recommended and he told us the two platters that were the most expensive. The beer came fast, as did the food. He asked from across the patio how the food was. He dropped the check before we even had finished our meal or even half of our beers. We might have ordered more beer or even more food, but felt like he just wanted us out of there. The food was mediocre at best... Long John Silvers is better and way cheaper. No enthusiasm in the staff AT ALL. Don't bother at this place. Again, I am in the restaurant industry and I am usually sympathetic, but this place doesn't even try. If I could give no stars I would. Sad because this place could have potential, with the boat-shaped patio and all. read more

Horrible management. I had an issue and the manager pushed me on the GM who wasn't working at the time. Didn't ask me what the problem was or anything. Great job Anthony Hernandez!! You're going places!! Got an attitude from hostess or whomever works the front door for change for a twenty. Got left the check in the middle of the meal without being asked if we wanted anything else. Thanks Jason! If you have a broke finger and give sub par service then maybe you shouldn't work or have a better manager that will back you up instead of sipping out of his sonic route 66 styrofoam cup shooting the shit with minors. My husband wanted to eat here so we decided to try it out. It was our first time here so we walked in and didn't know if it was seat yourself or they would sit us down..after being ignored for a couple of minutes by all the waitstaff and cashier a waiter or bartender(not sure what he didn't there) gave us an annoyed look and said sit wherever...at the same time a guy in a black shirt and hat asked us nicely how many and showed us where we could sit. We sat down and took the menus from the table and both the table and the menus were sticky.. We ordered from a semi nice waitress. My husband ordered oysters and the captains platter and since I really didn't want seafood I went with the chicken basket. The chicken was OK a little too salty but my husband loved everything he ordered. Our waitress didn't come to check on us often. I think it was because she was taking care of the tables outside too. We received our check from another girl and were told that when we were ready to go pay up front. We didn't leave a tip and I told my husband to leave one for the man in the black shirt because he was the only one that was actually nice to us. We chose this restaurant for Mother's Day, because I love calamari and haven't found a moderately-priced "go to" place with good calamari in Austin yet. We were immediately told that there was a 30 minute wait for inside dining, but dining on the patio was available immediately. It was very nice- albeit a tad windy- outside, so we ate outside and would do so again, weather permitting. We had four adult and one childs' entree, plus three starters. The fried boudin balls were interesting and tasty. If you like boudin, it could easily make a meal. The alligator was spicy and good. The calamari was great. The talapia was great. The fries were pretty good. The hush puppies were a bit overdone in my opinion, but I think would've been good otherwise. The stuffed shrimp were very good, and don't be afraid that there are only four - they are HUGE. The coleslaw was delicious. The sweet tea was sweetened with real sugar and was very good. The kids' meal popcorn shrimp was your garden variety mediocre frozen shrimp, which I expected. The shrimp basket was ridiculous. It stated that they were medium shrimp, but I believe they were popcorn shrimp that had been hammered nearly paper-thin and that's the only reason they attained such surface area! We literally could not taste the shrimp AT ALL. Two of the adults ordered those, and we each ate only 3 shrimp and decided it was BS. I asked to speak to the manager and he took one basket off the tab, just as I requested. (We did eat 6 of the "shrimp", so I wanted to be fair.) The waitress was busy, but attentive. Other than the pathetic excuse for shrimp, the only thing that bothered me were two families that did not control their kids - one family even let their kids climb over a fence railing and climb on the "ship" portion of the building and the lighthouse feature, which in some areas was pretty high and stationed about a stone wall that would've done serious damage if the kids had fallen.
