Captain Bob's picnic sail is truly one of the best snorkel tours offered in Hawaii. Starting with the crew being so helpful & fun they make sure the experience is special for everyone. I booked the trip for my group of 8 friends over the Thanksgiving weekend hoping for a sunny day but Mother Nature had a different plan. It was a cold & windy day with an occasional sprinkle. As we boarded some of my friends were asking if we should have cancelled. I said take your seats in the lower enclosed area and enjoy the ride. When we reached the sandbar and anchored my husband was the first to jump in the water. That's why he is the "The Big Kahuna". The water at the sandbar was fun and we played a little volley ball without the net. After working up an appetite, we returned to the boat for lunch & a surprise guitar serenade by Jenner the shuttle driver. Jenner started taking our song requests and we had a party singing & dancing. Everyone joined in the fun even the Japanese tourist that did not speak English. When we got to the reef after visiting the green turtles we all got back in the water for some real snorkeling. Since Mother Nature was still not helping with the weather it seemed better to stay in the water than out of it. But this is Hawaii...the water here is still better than the water in San Diego. The fish viewing was good & plentiful. On the ride back to the pier we had a chance to visit with others on the boat and chat with the crew. I want give a special thanks to crew members Ashley, Kelly & Ryan for all their support and efforts to make our trip enjoyable. My boss at work recommended we try CB while staying in Oahu, this was the first reservation for our stay and boy did it set the bar high for me. They start off by picking you up at a main hotel, then you get a ride to the location of the boat. We had Jenner as our tour guide and boy was he hilarious. He even sang me a song as I got on the bus ride, after the embarrassing hot seat we landed at the harbor we departed to practice snorkeling and it was amazing !!! The burgers they grilled up for our lunch was way better than a cheeseburger location we went to down the street from our hotel. (I gave them a one star) The crew was amazing and were extremely friendly, I felt like I was on a boat with family and friends. This is something we will definitely do again when we visit next year. We had a fantastic time and would recommend this day trip to anyone! The trip is about 4 hours long- we took the 10:30 tour which included lunch. They grilled out burgers with all of the condiments, fresh pineapple, baked beans and chips. Soda, juice, and water were included and alcoholic beverages were relatively cheap (about $4 a piece). The beginning of the tour brings you to the largest sandbar where they attempt a group volleyball game. After which you have lunch on the boat and sail to a sea turtle viewing area where we had no problem seeing about 4 sea turtles from the boat. The catamaran then heads out to the reef where you have plenty of time to snorkel and jump off the sides of the boat. The crew is professional, clean, friendly and very welcoming. They highlight some Hawaiian wives takes and tell fun facts throughout the trip. They definitely contributed to our overall enjoyment. read more

Huge shout out to Jenner, Ryan, Josh and Captain Ashley for a great adventure. This tour is one of the best on the island. You get taken out to the sandbar at K-bay where the crew sets up a volleyball net and cooks you burgers while you hang out. You then get to snorkel with giant sea turtles. You are pretty much guaranteed to always see the turtles. The crew made the experience so much better with their knowledge of the area and their fun personalities and of course Jenner on the guitar. Ok so just gonna start off with the negative part, there is no Captain Bob! Genuinely thought there was a Captain Bob and was excited to meet him but nope! Now on with the rest of the experience. We got picked up by the Sheraton Waikiki by Jenner. Jenner was our tour guide/entertainer. He really made the drive to Kane'ohe quite amusing and lively. Once we got to the boat, I had a small concern because it seemed like we had too many people for just one boat but once we got on and out on the water it was fine. The best thing about this trip was hands down the staff. The staff was very young, laid back, funny, but also very careful and articulate in the way they give instructions to our group. We had a big Japanese tourist group with us and even though they had one girl who was fluent, the rest of the staff was actually also quite versed in Japanese or at least enough to be able to start small conversations. Ashlyn and Ryan were great and super friendly. Talking to them about life on the island and having them share stories with us really made our trip more enjoyable. We started the trip by going to the Kane'ohe sand bar which is so awesome because you're standing on a strip of sand out in the middle of the ocean and playing volleyball while the water is only up to waist. Then the crew served us some burgers with all the condiments, I was starving after having no breakfast so this tasted heavenly. Also, don't be afraid to go back for seconds or thirds, at the end of the trip if they have leftover patties, they just feed them to the fishes! The snorkeling was awesome, we started by going to the reef and on our way we saw a bunch of sea turtles swimming and popping their heads out of the water. When we got to the reef, we put on our gear and were able to see quite a variety of fishes and even had a chance to follow sea turtles swimming right underneath us! The equipment was clean, when we got back to the boat we were rinsed off in fresh water so the salt didn't stick to us. Then a short trip back to shore, onto the bus, and back to our hotels. While we were on the boat, Jenner would play the guitar and serenade us as we take in the beautiful scenery of Kane'ohe Bay. It really was paradise, I've snorkeled before at Hanauma Bay but this experience was so much better. Thank you guys for providing us with such a warm welcome and great service. We did this tour AGAIN today!!! I love Capt. Bob's. My husband an I live here and this is our #1 tour to bring our guests on when they visit. What's not to love? The sandbar is gorgeous. We visit often and love it. Even on a overcast day is it beautiful. After some sun, water, and volleyball you eat a hot plate lunch complete with live music. Not gourmet, but what more do you need than a burger and chips? Don't come on this tour for the food. You are paying for the experience, not the food. After that it's off to their private reef for an hour of snorkeling. This is the best part!! The water is deep so wear a life jacket or use a noodle if you aren't comfortable in deep water. A few other reviewers have commented about the water being crowded. Here's the deal. The reef is a little over half a football field. If you stay right in front of the boat it will be crowded and you probably won't see turtles. But why would you stay there?? The staff lets your swim freely. We always leave the crowd and swim around the entire reef. It is absolutely stunning. The water is better lit on the other side so the view is better. Today we swam with turtles. They were on the other side of the reef. AMAZING!!!! Afterwards, they pour clean water to rinse you off when you get back on the boat and have hot chocolate or coffee available. This is a must do! There are 2 boats-one English speaking and the other Japanese. The boats are a little run down, but I don't mind because I'm not there for the boat. A few tips. -bring a waterproof camera -bring sunscreen and other sun protectors. Not a lot of shade. -if you are local bring a float. We do and it's the best way to enjoy lounging on the sandbar. If not just ask the staff for a noodle when you get there. -bring cash for alcohol beverages and to TIP THE STAFF. The staff is amazing and they earn every penny -BE BRAVE! Seriously, if you are scared put a lifejacket on and swim around the reef. Mahalo to the staff for always making this the highlight of our guests trips. You guys do a great job! The lack of reception or organization bumps Capt Bob's Picnic Sail down a few stars. Getting dumped at Heeia Kea Pier without any guidance or signage nearly killed the adventure. Surely there are better organized snorkel tours than this. When three boats came into dock, I was happy that the English speaking tourists got the "nicer-looking" boat (Merahi Mana), though I can't say it was a vast improvement over the dinky boats (Barefoot 1 and an overflow boat) that the Japanese tourists were squeezed into. At least they had shade. The experience kicked into high gear once we arrived at the sandbar, though the entirety of it was submerged in 1-2ft of water during our visit. It was a perfect opportunity to see one of the biggest sandbars (about 3 miles last check) in the world. There was abundant sea life available in small pockets along the outskirts of the sandbar, for those willing to snorkel a distance away. I spotted my first sea turtle of the sail on my swim out. However, most tourists just hung out near the boats, taking in the sand, surf and beer and some even partook in a game of water volleyball. Too bad there wasn't enough time to cover the entire sandbar during this first outing. After the sandbar, we sped off to the next leg of our tour, all the while feasting on grilled burgers and canned pineapple. Sure, the burgers were the frozen patty kind, but because they were cooked over coals, the labor made us appreciate the effort. It was also pleasant to sit and take in the breeze of Kaneohe Bay and the view of Koolau. The turtle sightings made up an exciting second part of the tour. We probably chased down or were chased by a total of 20 large sea turtles. We even observed a pair of giant manta rays skating along the surface at one point. The last third of the sail consisted of snorkeling in an actual coral reef, replete with sea life. Underwater camera opportunities aplenty here; the number of fish, crustaceans and other critters was staggeringly abundant here. The water was somewhat cloudy, and despite my inexperience and multiple collisions with other flailing snorkelers, the view of the reef was still breath-taking and the multitude of splashing divers didn't detract from the overall experience. Snorkeling gear was available gratis. The staff was nice and friendly, and willing to assist snorkelers and novice swimmers. We had a few children on the tour who would have missed out on the beauty of the reef if the crew had not offered to tow them around for a view. Overall, Captain Bob's Picnic Sail was a positive experience even though some aspects of the tour was lacking. Hopefully, with a new boat coming into service, they'll get their reception act straight and make this adventure one of the can't-miss experiences on Oahu. FYI bring SUNBLOCK! read more

This is an absolute must do. We had an absolute blast on our visit to the sandbar. It is really mind blowing to be standing in the middle of the bay on solid ground. Clearly the word has gotten out how cool this is so the boat was pretty full, but not to the point where you absolutely felt like you were crammed. And once you're up and running you don't really care anyways. The ladies that are running the boat as well as deckhand Eggy were awesome. Once we arrived at the sandbar they set up volleyball and we played two rounds which was also a blast. Those that did not want to join in wandered around and took lots of selfie's, which is just as much fun. Then back to the boat for believe it or not surprisingly good cheeseburgers that they grilled up for us on the boat. And some baked beans and pineapple and a beer and life out in the bay is great! After that we went looking for turtles and while we did not have a lot of luck and only saw couple the final stop was at a massive reef in the bay where we got more than an hour to snorkel. All gear was provided and it was an absolutely incredible time. Loads of beautiful fish to see, simply stunning. Lastly, no need to worry if you don't have cash for the bar as a sidenote; you just keep a running tab with them and at the end they swipe your credit card and it's all taken care of. Five bucks may be a little bit much for a beer but let's be honest you probably spend more in a bar and it's way more fun drinking a cold one standing in the middle of Kaneohe Bay. This was our first trip out to the sandbar and it ended up being our favorite activity out of everything we did on the island! The ride out was smooth and once we got to the sandbar, the water was shin-deep and crystal clear. They set up a volleyball net in the middle and after everyone got their fill of the water, we got back up on the boat and they served lunch as we embarked to the reef. Lunch was included in the fare and consisted of hamburgers, salad, pineapples, and soft drinks. We brought our own beer and thank goodness we did because it was $5 a can onboard. So tip for you, BYOB! On our way to the reef, we spotted 5 turtles and had the opportunity to swim a couple feet away from them while we snorkeled. Second tip, get off the boat and get away from the crowd. Circle the reef. Absolutely magical. Nothing like floating above hundreds of meters of coral reef with beautiful creatures in a quiet bliss to give you newfound respect for the ocean. Couldn't get enough of it and was extremely sad when they called out for the final minutes at the site. If you get the opportunity to, do this! You'll make memories of a lifetime! read more

Captain Antonio's crew took care of us as we made stops at the sandbar, meandered throughout the bay looking for turtles, and stopped at a reef for snorkeling. Captain Antonio threw me some bread to attract a school of fish to feed just beneath me as I swam by the reef. Our first trip to Hawaii and while we had some things planned, this was something we wanted to do, but we were unsure of what the weather was going to do so we waited until we were on the island. We planned our excursion on one of our free days and had an early morning pick up. Bus driver was quiet and didn't explain what was going on or where we were going. Once we arrived to the dock, we had to wait about 20 minutes for the other bus to arrive. We were 1 of 4 english speaking couples on the boat(s) and were assigned the absolutely adorable Riley as our guide. He was fairly new at it, but very knowledgeable. He was nervous but he did a great job. Made us all feel comfortable and we learned a lot from him. We left the harbor and headed to the sandbar. It was a warm and sunny day, absolutely perfect!! (12.5.2016). Once we got to the sandbar, everyone got in the water which was the perfect temp. We frolicked, swam and a volleyball net was set up. We played until lunch was set up and we enjoyed bbq burgers, baked beans, chips and soda (tasty). After lunch we pulled anchor and headed to reef to look for turtles. We were able to spot quite a few and got some great pictures. After about 30 minutes, we headed to another part of the reef, pulled out the snorkels, goggles, fins and into the water we went!! We swam with the turtles and fishes. The turtles were kind of shy but the fish would swim right up to you. It was so gorgeous and exciting. We hung out for about 30 minutes or so, pulled anchor and headed back. We had perfect weather the entire time and were able to mark something off of our bucket list. Would highly recommend this to anyone. read more

Outstanding experience visiting a beautiful sandbar, watching so many sea turtles and amazing fishes at the snorkel spot. Great crew, awesome food and a perfect day in water!! Boat had restrooms and the crew was very friendly, they helped us in taking our pictures in water and also eased many folks new to snorkeling!! I've been to the sandbar with friends many times--this was my first excursion with a tour company. My parents are on island and they've heard about the magical sandbar but my friends with boats were unavailable during their stay. We booked this tour and I remained a bit skeptical that it could compare to a day out untethered. We all had an absolute blast on this picnic sail. The employees were so very friendly and enthusiastic. It didn't seem as though they were at "work" though they worked their tails off the entire day. The tour was very well organized and we saw many Hawaiian treasures--manta rays, turtles, the Koolaus, a thriving reef and its inhabitants. Lunch exceeded my expectations. Simple but delicious. The view of the island of Oahu from the sandbar is unparalleled. I'd most definitely recommend this tour...though I'd love a kama'aina rate (of course). read more

TW: violence towards sea life. The good: Beautiful views all the way, loved the sandbar, and the coral reef was amazing. There were sea turtles right where they said there would be. The female crew members Ari and Shy were professional, helpful, and confident. The bad: The male captain (I believe the name was Rawlins) was not someone I would trust. Before leaving the harbor he made a joke about transgender people being "confused" (when talking about bathrooms), had an arrogant attitude, and most upsetting of all is that when we found a small jellyfish he came over and picked it up to apparently impress us all that he could handle the sting, and then he pulled its tentacle until it broke in half. Then proceed to throw the wounded creature as far as he could back into the ocean. When i said in shock, "it's probably going to die now" his response was "well there are thousands more out there so it doesn't matter." It was extremely disturbing and I don't trust my safety on the open ocean with anyone who would intentionally hurt a sea creature. I want to give this tour a better rating because everything else was great, but I couldn't feel comfortable after all of that and what happened is not ok. I can recommend this tour if you confirm in advance that it will be a different captain. read more

I suggest reading this review if you're a first time snorkeler, you can't swim well, or have chronic anxiety and think suddenly it'll go away in this one moment of bravery... (tips are at the end) I strongly suggest (if you're a child when it comes to swimming) even if you're staying with the group and the group goes far to the end of the reef, absolutely don't follow! In my experience, I swam out with a few snorkelers who ended up turning around and I was so focused on the fish I didn't notice how far I was and how everyone left and I got stuck out really far from the boats. What I didn't know, is that the tide that day was SIGNIFICANTLY stronger at the end of the reef at the drop off. I kept getting thrashed around and despite my attempts to swim away from the reef but also towards the boat I kept getting thrown on top of the sharp reef and was making little progress towards the boat. I had to signal for the lifeguards to come swim out to me which I feel so so bad for doing but I was literally about to have another anxiety attack in the middle of the ocean. HI IF YOURE READING THIS THANKS SO MUCH, ALSO SO SORRY The service: The people were really nice and they seemed to love their jobs. They liked to joke around a lot and were pretty friendly. I kinda got the vibe that they've all been doing this so much that it's all become routine. They were all fairly young though so having to flag them down to save my life was v embarrassing cause I'm a grown a*s woman who can hardly tread water. You get serenaded at the sand bar while eating lunch, that was something I won't forget. It was the first time I've felt actually relaxed in like a year. They continuously try to talk with the guests to make them feel at ease and welcomed which I appreciated. Tips: - You have to bring your own towels - Lunch is provided, bring cash for $5 boxed wine and beer (try and bring exact change because they didn't have it initially) - They have unlimited beverages, but I'd still bring your own water bottle because the cups were really small DIRECTIONS AND PARKING: - So I tried to be helpful and drop a pin where the tour bus dropped me off (460509 Kamehameha Hwy Kaneohe, HI 96744 United States) but when I plugged it into another app, it went to the Kaneohe state park? So here's the mf latitude and longitude of my dropped pin. 21.4429, -157.8103 (google maps says this coordinate and the He'eia boat harbor where the snorkel boat is docked is in the middle of the ocean) - From the location I shared walk in the parking lot to the very end of the pier where you see a building for a bathroom and a building where the burgers are being cooked for lunch, the boats are located right next to that building. There's picnic tables for you to sit and wait for someone to call you by last name to board the boat. - For those with disabilities, to save you the walk if you drive all the way down the parking lot towards the buildings I talked about, there is one parking spot for the disabled right by the pick up point. - They do provide life vests so if you can't swim, you can still snorkel - Apparently there's been incidents of guests getting stung by Portuguese man of war at the sand bar so be on the lookout (but I didn't see any) - The schedule for the day: Sand bar (volleyball) Lunch at the sand bar Turtle watching Snorkeling (1 hour) - when you first get on the boat, go straight to the front, the guests in the back had to get up a few times to go to the front because that is where our person gave instructions (also you see more sea turtles in this area) - They had several Japanese interpreters which I thought was so cool - When you get off the boat run to the bathroom because a line starts to form - There is two bathrooms on the boat though but they're what you'd expect, still clean though - don't forget pictures! If someone is staying behind on the boat, it's really easy to get caught up and swim out immediately. Turn around for a second, throw up a Shaka to the camera and then head out. - You're on a boat so I'd think it's to be expected, but you dock at the sand bar for a bit and if you get motion sick very easily, you should take some motion sickness medicine because the boat rocks, but it's not a crazy amount so if you're not a sensitive potato to all stimuli like me you'll be fine - FOR THE LOVE OF GOD BRING SUNSCREEN, you must bring your own and apply it before you leave for the turtles so it can soak in. I usually don't burn, I brown but I actually got a little crispy - Your bags will be safe on the boat, the workers all stayed behind so I wasn't scared leaving my money and phone while in the water - Kaneohe in general has small hammer head sharks and even with my stupid anxiety I'd still do it again knowing that. I didn't even see any on the reef. - The sea turtles are more active during the winter. I'd keep that in mind before you book. 10/10 would do again though! It was a wonderful experience. read more

Event date: 9 October 2013 My husband and I enjoyed the trip except for the following: 1. The bus was running late so we were picked up by a mini van then transferred to a bus later. 2. I thought the time at the sandbar was too short; it seemed as if we just got out of the boat, walked around and took some pictures then we were called back to the boat for lunch. I think it was because the bus and the boats were running late leaving little time to spend at the sandbar. 3. No cookies, dessert or fruits served with lunch 4. The snorkel was very basic although sufficient enough 5. The deep water around the reef was murky, but it wasn't the company's fault 6. The price of $98/pp was a bit steep What was awesome: 1. The views 2. The sandbar itself 3. The turtles 4. The nice and friendly crew including Jenner who was very entertaining with his guitar playing/singing and knowledge of the island. Overall, it was a good experience and I'd recommend it to others. Note to the person who said the following: "THE WATER OVER THE REEF WAS SO SHALLOW THAT WE COULD STAND ON IT in parts!! KILLING the reef!!" You know you're going to kill the reef when you step on it, so why would you do that? It is common for the water over the reef to be shallow, but you're NEVER supposed to stand on it unless you're drowning (the crew told you that too) or you'll kill it! read more

Love this tour! Great friendly people, decent size boat. They delivered at every step. First to the sand bar, then to see some turtles and finally snorkeling at the reef. They bbq'd burgers and had wine and beer available for purchase. We had a great time!! I would do it again. The only drawback was getting picked up. All the crew from both boats were amazingly friendly, kind and so well experienced. I new I was in good hands. First time playing volleyball on the sandbar, and snorkeling with the beautiful fish. The crew also interacts in all the activities with you so that was super cool. The food was amazingly good. My husband and I are definitely coming back on our next vacation. I enjoyed this tour so much more than the one my family and I had done previously. The people one the boat were extremely friendly and even though it was really cold, they went out of their way to make it a great experience. We had never experienced a sandbar, so it was a unique experience and I hope to go back on day with better weather! read more

I highly recommend everyone to do this excursion! This was probably the highlight of my whole trip to O'ahu during 10/19-10/25. From the hospitality of the staff to the excursion activities itself, I would want to do this every time I come back! I also met a gentleman (the one that provides entertainment during lunch) and he was making handmade bracelets with palm leaves. If any of the staff can help me out in getting in contact with him - because I recently lost my anklet he made when I came back to the mainland, that would be great! wow! this tour is so amazing. if you want to check out the worlds largest sand bar next to the only barrier reef in the US then this tour is perfect for you! just the idea of standing on sand in the middle of the ocean is already surreal itself. we checked in at 1030 and was on our way to the sandbar by 11. they will brief you on whats gonna happen, safety and what to expect. after that you'll arrive at the sandbar and will have about 1 hour to do water activities like beach volleyball, snorkeling they even provide floating toys. next they will call you in for lunch. burgers. chips. salad. beans. they even have beer and wine. after lunch they will leave the sandbar and take you to a turtle and manta ray watching spot. we spotted several. next they will anchor to a near by pop up reef and you can snorkel even more. its one thing to snorkel at a shallow hanauma bay, but deep water snorkeling is way more exciting. i got to swim with a turtle! all in all. captain bobs picnic sail was legit! i would like to give thanks and credit to the crew capt. Ok, there are a few factors for the 5 star review. 1) Staff = top notch and passionate about what they do. Very helpful and attentive to each and every customer. There were about 60 people on our trip and they did a great job keeping everyone happy. For perspective there was about 6-8 crew for this whole group. So job well done! 2) Location = we went out of Kaneohe Bay. It was a bit for confusing when we arrived. There was no signs letting us know where to be or wait. No representation from Captain Bob's. Truth be told that this made me a bit uneasy & sceptical. This changed when the boats ended up showing up and then we were ushered aboard. **side note to Capt' Bob: I highly recommend some signage at the dock to let customers know they are at the right location. 3) Time = they have 3 trips a day. We took the middle trip (10:30am - 2:30pm) and I'd highly recommend this one. I've heard the other two (early morning and late afternoon) are really quick and not able to really enjoy. read more

This is the 4th time I've been on this excursion and each time we've had a wonderful, unforgettable time!! Captain (a wonderful woman) was awesome as a guide.
