Getting Fish& Chips for my British friend who just turned 90 :-)
Barrett O.

Living on the Gulf Coast there's an abundance of fresh seafood. I haven't been to a Captain D's in nearly six years since moving here from TN where flounder was scarce, never mind grouper, triple tail, or triggerfish :-) Yesterday I wanted to get my British friend some fish & chips for a gathering and this fairly newly Captain D's was close by and thought, why not? I was impressed with the friendly and accommodating staff and also that they are cooking the fish to order. While they advertise that they prioritize sustainable sourcing, particularly for wild-caught fish like cod, pollock, and salmon, and avoid processed fish products, focusing on whole fillets to maintain natural flakiness and quality. However they do offer farm-raised tilapia and catfish, which is in my no-go list but they do offer crab that's sourced from various US coasts, and clams harvested off the Northeast US coast, for breaded clam strips. I tried the fish & chips that I purchased and it wasn't that bad, but fresh is impossible to beat. I won't become a regular, for sure, with the abundance of fresh fish locally but it's a nice location with friendly staff and quick service.

When I say I've never been to a captain d's that was this perfect I am not lying the food both times we went were so fresh. it was such a clean environment. The cashiers were super sweet and our food did not even take long for it to come out. I love that they have self-serve sauces because you can never get enough of their tartar sauce.

Fish and shrimp with coleslaw and french fries with extra crunchies. $12.

Fried food in drive-up. 10 min. wait. No sauces brought out waiting curbside. Bad attitude.

The fish is hot and crispy and not so heavily breaded. The service was fast and friendly.

First Watch has around 630 locations across 32 states with the highest concentration in Florida. This location of First Watch in Foley, AL is a popular local spot in the area for their breakfast, brunch and lunch options. First Watch is one of only a handful of restaurants in the area that offer quinoa and they do offer a lot of other healthier options. One big negative to me about this spot is they don't have whole cream and only have that weak pathetic half and half junk so I have to bring my own cream. Another thing they lack (that is also way too common in a lot of Lower Alabama) is they don't have mustard so I have to bring my own mustard as well. I'm not the biggest fan of breakfast as I prefer the brunch and lunch time of eating a lot more. I'm a big fan of their bottomless coffee other than having to bring my own cream. The food is alright but I really prefer a New Orleans style brunch and lunch and there is no sign of any veal grillades and grits in sight at this spot. The service is a bit slow to refill your drinks and they seem to be a bit understaffed. Overall I've liked my experiences here but most of the food isn't my favorite while I do applaud their efforts to offer healthier food.

The appetizers were delicious (seafood stuffed mushrooms and fried pickles), and the entrees were gigantic. What made the trip a 10/10 for us is the management. I had a medical episode and the manager, our waitress, and the owner of the restaurant sat with my family and me until the ambulance arrived. Not only did the owner refuse our money and paid for our entire meal, he also made sure our waitress was tipped as well. Fantastic place to eat, and the owner is an angel. Tin Top is our "Go To" restaurant on the coast, we always look forward to going there. Great value for the price, Not price gouging like some places that serve everything fried at a premium price, while living off name recognition of the restaurant. One of the standout touches is the little shop inside, filled with all kinds of great finds--soaps, mists, lotions, and even kitchen accessories. It's a fun bonus that makes the experience feel a bit more unique. We came in with a group of 16, and they were able to accommodate us in a separate space across from the main area, which worked out really well. If you're planning a visit with a large group, I'd definitely recommend calling ahead. Major shoutout to our server--she handled splitting the check six ways like a pro. Everything came out correctly and fairly close together, which is no small feat with a group our size. I ordered the mahi sandwich, and it was delicious. The bun was perfectly buttered, and the fish itself was flavorful and well-prepared. They also offer a salad bar if you're looking for something lighter. Prices are on the higher side, but that's pretty standard for seafood. Some dishes were served whole--bone-in and all--which caught a few people in our group off guard, but to me, that's usually a sign of freshness. The food did take a bit of time to come out, but given the size of our party, it was understandable. Overall, I really enjoyed our visit and would happily come back.

Hominy, hush puppies, cornbread, grits, Alabama white sauce on any meat, especially smoked chicken, are all popular in Alabama. BBQ is practically a religion in the South! As former certified Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) certified judges, my husband and I completed the training and paid the fees to be certified. The "KCBS way" is different from a lot of people's preferences in that, for example, a BBQ rib should actually have some "pull" to it, meaning, when you bite into it, your mouth should leave a mark in the rib. This means "fall off the bones" ribs are not KDBS quality, despite how many love that rib consistency. The KCBS judges slots fill up so quickly and required us to travel at our own cost and we did not judge any KCBS events. Back to Southern food. Deep fried double Oreos are one of the many fried foods here in Huntsville, and Melt restaurant features them on their menu. Meat-and-Three restaurants feature a meat (usually fried pork chop, meatloaf, BBQ, fried catfish, country fried steak/chicken) and three sides (fried okra, creamed corn, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked potato, potato salad, cole slaw, French fries) and bread options such as cornbread, rolls, hush puppies. While Southern Cooking is absolutely delicious, I have to limit it because lets face it, it is high in calories and cholesterol. When I do indulge, it's shrimp and grits, pimento cheese, fried green tomatoes, and fried whole okra.
