The Saltwater Grill was a nice supersize after reading some unfavorable reviews. The Royal Reds (that's deep water very large & tasty shrimp indigenous to South Alabama) for you non-southerners. The Alligator Bites, the Gumbo, the crab cakes, the spicy cornbread was delicious. The service was fantastic, everything she (my server) suggested was outstanding. The chef actually appeared as I was eating to make sure I was happy with his cooking. Food, service and value was excellent. Due to the senior bowl ending Saturday, this hotel went from 100% to 10% capacity just has we checked in. So staff was plentiful. For those who have never been to the Grand Hotel in Point Clear, AL - it is truly a beautiful place to visit. The grounds are always well kept, the hundred year old oaks are majestic, and the sunsets on the point are amazing. The Grand continues to impress with the service and food offered at the restaurants and bars located on the property. As a local who comes here often, I have never had a bad experience. Tonight I dined in the Salt Water Grill, it's the Grand's "family" restaurant. I enjoyed the crab cake entree. It was served with 3 crab cakes (about 3+ oz each), rice cooked to perfection, and a wonderful vegetable medley. The dish was topped with micro-greens and tiny fried onions and paired with a very nice chardonnay. The only reason I put family in quotes is because the prices are a little steep for a family on vacation. All in all the food, service, and scenery are top notch. read more

My family and I stayed a night at The Grand as we were driving back to Texas. The hotel was lovely and we enjoyed our stay. The Saltwater Grill was a huge disappointment. It was overpriced and the food was bland and very forgetable. Our young sons ordered mac and cheese with fries. They each got about six fries and a huge bowl of macaroni which my younger son said tasted "like butt". I chastised him on his choice of words and honestly, unless he has tasted butt-there's no way he could honestly compare the two. I ordered the mac n cheese and bronzed chicken. It was dry, sahara dry-and I need not remind you about the butt comment. My husband had the fried shrimp which he said was adequate, but very average. The shrimp were small and the "grand" puppies were marble sized. Overall, we would stay at the hotel but would steer clear of the Saltwater Grill. read more

What beautiful setting. Overlooking Mobile Bay. You'd think your seafood was local and top shelf. It is not. I ordered a dozen oysters. I enjoy Louisiana oysters and looked forward to sampling Alabama oysters. I commented that the oysters were smaller than I'm used to seeing form the Gulf. My server told me the oysters this evening were from Maryland. What? I'm looking out over mobile Bay and I am served oysters from Maryland! I'll bet these oysters were frozen also because they wasn't much liquor in them. I had a jumbo lump crab cakes next and I'll bet that came from Maryland as well. There was nothing jumbo lump about it. Lots of back fin meat though. Unfortunately, it seems the food is typical corporate supplier variety. Great food. Great service. Bit of an up charge on alcohol, as you'd expect at a resort, but food prices were very reasonable for upscale dining (15-30 for entrees). Menu is somewhat limited but food is good. We sat outside and it was very dark so make sure you're seated on the side with overhead lights. Grouper was outstanding. Cobb salad had shrimp and crab which was a nice addition. Sundried tomato and artichoke dip was very heavy and I wouldn't order it again if it was just the two of us - filled us up a bit too much before entrees. Lost stars because of service. We were seated quickly on a Saturday and got a chance to select a table with a view. Our waitress attended to us as soon as we were seated and was very friendly. The menu initially seemed a bit limited, but I was anxious to try some southern specialties. First off, the complimentary corn bread is great. I only could recommend some honey on the side. As far as the entrees, we had the seafood pasta and shrimp and grits. Both portions were large, but on a bit of the bland side. The manager did come out and check on us, as well as our waitress (a couple of times), but you can't really ask for more flavor in your entrees. My boyfriend and I stayed at the Grand Hotel Marriott in Point Clear, Alabama. If you have never stayed here, well, you are missing out. The hotel is beautiful!! The cornbread was excellent. The mahi mahi Poboy was too. The snapper lacked seasoning and was a disappointment and disservice to such a delectable fillet of fish. The view from the restaurant is spectacular and the service was great. We recommended mending the snapper recipe. read more

I ordered a romaine heart salad that was so simple my children could have made it. My wife and I both ordered the macaroni and cheese with Conecuh sausage because you can't screw that up right? Wrong. It wasn't horrible, just very bland. Raw grape tomatoes thrown in for some reason. Definitely not worth 18 dollars. We each had 1 cocktail and the meal was 80 bucks with tip. you can't go wrong with this place whether you're staying as a guest or a local. We had fried green tomatos as an appetizer and it was delicious. My husband and I shared the seafood platter and it was more than enough for two people (and we're by no means tiny people). Price for bottle of wine was suprisingly very reasonable too. Dined at The Saltwater Grill last month and had a great time. I was dining alone and never felt alienated or forgotten. I had the Lobster Bisque which was very nice. Not too rich and just the right amount of cream (not heavy at all). Followed by the Gourmet Mac & Cheese with filet tips. The only concern I had with this dish was that there was too much. I don't have the biggest appetite and had to take a fair amount home with me. For the price it was more than worth it. I really enjoyed the ambience, the food and the pleasant helpful staff. I am a Fairhope Resident and thought I would try the Grand Hotel for Thanksgiving dinner. Needless to say, I was looking forward to an exceptional meal in an elegant setting. The last seating time for Thanksgiving meal was 2pm, which is the time I reserved. Would have liked a later seating option however, I took the latest reservation I could get. Prior to our arrival time, I reviewed the published menu and again looked forward to all the Grand had to offer. We arrived a little before 2pm, waited in a line for some 10-15 minutes, not what I expected, but, ok..am sure the wait will be worth it. As we waited in line, a strolling band came through playing Dixie style jazz, thought it was a great touch! We chose to sit outside, very pretty view, was met by a very inexperienced waiter, am thinking serving is not his normal area of responsibility, we had to ask several times for Mimosas, to take our dirty plates, etc...Now to the food, some was cold, meat dry, the quality, (except for the crab legs) was far below standard I expected from the Grand. About 30 minutes into our dinner, the band wrapped up, waiters started clearing tables around us, they closed one side of the food line....talk about feeling rushed! Had to ask for a couple of the desserts to be refilled, bananas foster was served, somewhat cold, previously prepared, from a large bowl....thought bananas foster was always served piping hot, freshly prepared. All in all, I was VERY disappointed! I will not put the Grand on my future list for Thanksgiving meals. The costs for 3 of us $178.00.....based on the quality, total bill should have been about $30.00. Do yourself and wallet a favor, skip this Hotel if you are looking for an exceptional meal. read more

Totally understaffed on Labor Day weekend. Which is completely unacceptable for how busy it was on Sunday night. I realize how hard it is to get staff to come in on a Sunday & on a holiday weekend but thats no excuse for the amount of money this place charges. We waited a long time for everything from our table to be cleared of the last guests food, to our drinks, to our entrees. Total time for three people to have 1 drink and 1 entree: Three (3) hours. When our entrees came half of it was cold. I ordered the Kobe beef burger cooked medium-rare and what I received was equivalent to a hockey puck on a burnt, crusty bun. I come here about once every two years to see if things have changed and give it another chance and each and every time like clockwork it disappoints. It's not a bad menu, the servers are hardworking and friendly. The problem is they have no reason to improve because people continue to fill the dining room to capacity only because the atmosphere is nice. My advice is to steer clear of The Grand's food options and eat anywhere else in Fairhope. read more

Visited the saltwater grill this evening for a meal while staying at the Grand. Nice enough staff but the food just wasn't very good and the menu included hardly anything that wasn't seafood. Def not worth $18 for a giant plate of noodles with some cheese sauce over them. Steak was $36 and tasted ok but def not worth the overly high resort price.
