This is one of the best seafood restaurant in town!!! The food is prepared fresh to order. I don't mind the wait, bc the food is ALWAYS good....For the food to be made to order, the wait time is quick. I had Mona that took my order. Her beautiful smile and kindness was so nice to have that greets you in the drive thru. She was very polite and seemed happy to help. On a heat index day of near 110 or more, it's refreshing to have a kind person place a smile on my long day at work face. I love eating here. I don't frequent Captain D's often, however I went with a friend who really enjoys this place and I wasn't disappointed. The service was friendly and fast, we were met with smiles and kindness. I ordered the Chicken Tenders Kid's Meal, which came with 2 pieces of chicken tenders, fries, a drink, and 2 hush puppies. The chicken tenders were lukewarm, with a nice crunchy breading, and you can tell that they were hand breaded. They were okay; I think they would be better hot and fresh. The fries were piping hot and fresh, but lacked seasoning. I gave it four stars because the hush puppies were amazing - fresh, crispy, and very flavorful. The staff here has to be the most unprofessional group of people i have ever had the displeasure of meeting. God help you if you ask for something not common, such as a soda, or a straw. The drive thru employee must have not seen their long lost child in eons, because a 20 min conversation ensued. I love fried okra, so the first time I went I got 1 order of okra and hush puppies (wasn't that hungry, but I had a taste for okra). I loved the okra so much I should have bought another. Hush puppies were just okay, wasn't a big fan. The second time I got the Salmon platter with two sides of okra. Salmon was a bit dry and the rice was somewhat crunchy in some areas, other than that I would go back! If you like fried okra Captain D's is the place to go! read more

During lunch today I reminisced on how my brothers and I would eat Captain D's for a late breakfast (brunch). That set up tonights plan to go here. First let me compliment the young adults who were working tonight, so nice, considerate and professional. I notice the young lady at the drive-thru slightly frustrated as she dealt with confusing customers who did not know what they want, holding up the line and changing their order. Though frustrated, the young lady kept her cool. I ordered the sampler plate with two sides and 5 extra shrimp and some really good potato soup. Wifey ordered a fish and chicken platters with two sides and a drink. The cashiers, who were awesome, asked what two sides we wanted, we both had the corn on the cob, I had broccoli and my wife had mac and cheese. We ate in and took our seats to wait for our food. As we did, we notice that we were charged and extra .39 cents each for the corn. Confused on the extra charge, my wife inquired when I food was bought out. The server did not hold any punches when she told us "that's how they get ya, make you think it comes with the meal and it does, but its a specialty item so they charge you extra." I just loved her honesty. We just left it alone and could not wait to get home and do this review. The food was served in reasonable time, it was hot and fresh. The potato soup was AWESOME, the veggies where nice and hot. What I like about Captains D's over is competitor is they do not over batter the fish. It is battered just right. You actually taste fish and not a bunch of batter like the competition. Took what was left on the run, gave a shout-out to the AWESOME CREW and went home. Overall it was a good meal and hospitality. Don't eat at Captain D's much but the next time I do, Ill make sure it is this location. read more

First time trying this restaurant here. I just ordered the #5 catfish feast, green beans, Cole slaw, broccoli, & clam chowder. The cole slaw is spoiled, green beans have no flavor even with meat added, and the clam chowder tastes like mustard. One piece of catfish was cooked and decent. The other pieces of fish weren't fully cooked & had undone raw batter in places. The broccoli was over cooked. I will not be back to waste another $15 on this. I'm so disappointed. read more

Line was very long. They move you through fast. That's because they don't give you the food you ordered. You get home and open up the Styrofoam containers and find out half the stuff that goes in the meal wasn't in there. I would not recommend this place. read more

I got couple of dinners tonight for me and my 11 year old son. When I got home there were 4 packets of sour cream and they were all 3 days expired. So I called the store to not complain but to let them know that they are giving out expired item so they would be aware but without saying anything the person on the the phone just hung up the phone. If this is what they do with expired sour cream what else are they just using that is also expired that we can't see the dates of. If this is how customers who want to help by alerting the store so they can fix the issue are treated, it shows how much they really care about the customers. I have come to the conclusion that the people of VA have no idea what real flavor and fresh food actually tastes like. I was hoping that the long lines at this business was a good sign, sadly, it wasn't . There is no way this fish is prepared fresh per order, it is frozen and dropped into a vat of hot oil. The fish was very greasy. The french fries and hush puppies are also frozen, the coleslaw is pre-packaged and flavorless. You can tell when something is processed and frozen because everything is the same size. Each piece of fish was identical. If this was actually freshly prepared food the tarter sauce would be freshly prepared but it came in premade package. For the price, I could have easily bought frozen fish and frozen fries for less. While I waited for my order I watched several staff members open food containers and peer inside. I don't know why so many had to do that but I found it to be unsanitary as some of those staff members were also running the cash register. read more

I liked this store before but it was not good this time. I brought my free birthday meal coupon. They looked it and confused first. Some employees came out and their attitudes were like what a he**?! I told them that I used one coupon here before. I got to have the meal eventually. But it was not pleasant. If they can not work nicely to customers, they should work not at the front but in the kitchen. Oh, if they can cook... This is like a larger, slightly cleaner Long John Silver's. It may have more variety than LJS as well. I was surprised to hear that Captain D's is a chain -- it was definitely a fast-ish food seafood place, but it doesn't have the stale feeling of many chains. The food's decent overall. I mentioned "fast-ish" food because there's a little bit of a wait -- not too long, but I think the extra time does make a difference. There isn't a Captain D's close by to me I think the closest one is like on a Military Base. Anyway, EVERY TIME I get a chance I bring my Grandmother here and we ALWAYS enjoy the food. I promise if I lived locally I would be best friends with the staff because I would eat here pretty often. The food is ALWAYS HOT and fresh. I noticed they switched up their french fries and I am good with the change. The Hush puppies are my favorite hush puppies I do not care for the extremely sweet hush puppies, These are a bit savory and have onions in them. The fish is always hot and I don't have to ask for packets of ANYTHING I get a whole bottle of condiments to myself. Me and My Grandmother always leave raving about how good it was. I always have to go to this Captain D's when I'm in the downtown Newport News or Hampton area. I wish there was one uptown Newport News. However the food is always good. I've never had any complaints. Service is always quick and my food is always hot. I went to this location on Mother's Day to get a gift card for my grandmother and after waiting in a 20 minute line was told they did not have gift cards. Fast forward to yesterday, I called ahead because I wanted to get a gift card for my grandfather for Father's Day. I was told on the phone that they did have gift cards, and I told them I would be coming to get one. I drove 20 minutes out of my way, because I do not live near the location and waited in a 30 minute line from 2:40-3:10PM. When I got to the ordering menu I was still told that I could get a gift card. When I get to the window I am told that the gift card machine does not work. I spoke to the manager who is named Terrell, who was very unhelpful and stated there was nothing he could do but give me a free drink. I said, no, I do not want a drink, can I pay for a gift card and he just sign or type a statement stating that I prepaid for an order so that my grandfather could still get a "gift card" or atleast be able to eat. He told me no, so I said wow, so my time just isnt going to be reclaimed. He stated "I cant give you free food". No offense but I dont even like the food here, my grandparents do so I dont even want a meal and dont appreciate being accused of wanting free food. I simply wanted to give the people money since I spent in total basically a hour on this trip; and then them give me something to allow my grandfather to be able to come back and get a meal. I dont need a free meal from Captain D's.....meanwhile as this is going on the employees around him are laughing. Super unprofessional, but that is consistent with every time I visit this location. My main issue is why have you not had gift cards for OVER A MONTH. Also why are your employees not aware of this; especially the ones answering the phone. This restaurant is a very pleasant oasis from the chaos that is Jefferson Ave. The staff is friendly and helpful. Their is a surprising variety of tasty vegetables to choose from, but the classic combination of fish, fries and slaw is hard to beat. We were a party of 6 on a weekday at lunch time so we had a broad sampling of the menu, plus I was eyeballing the stuff that was being delivered to tables around us because of FOMO. Two of us had the deluxe platter and the fries, fish, shrimp, stuffed crab and hush puppies were fresh and hot, cooked in clean oil. The slaw and salads were cold and fresh The fried green tomatoes were smoking hot, the green beans were delicious. Two orders of southern style chicken strips were very good and so plentiful to go boxes were needed. This location made a fan out of me, and I will be returning often whenever I want a break from cooking in a nice, clean, quiet atmosphere to enjoy some hot,fresh, tasty fish.
