Several times when we've been to Country Grill, Yorktown, managers have stopped by the table to check how things were, tonight that didn't happen. If they had they would have heard about missing beer menus, dirty/greasy salt grinders, dead flies littering the window sills next to the tables, slow and disinterested service and a seeming lack of interest of the staff in anything but chatting with each other. County Grill in Yorktown has always been one of our go-to restaurants but unfortunately is fell very short today. We got in early, before the afternoon rush, around 3:45 pm. We were seated quickly in a booth along the front windows and our waitress came over and got us started with cornbread muffins and took our drink order. I did ask for the paper beer list that they always have due to their extensive taps but none were available, a first for me. Neither our waitress or the hostess could explain why they didn't have the normal beer list. I ordered a beer and when asked if I also wanted water like my wife, I said yes. My wife's water showed up almost immediately, mine must have been forgotten but thankfully my beer showed up a short time later. We ordered our dinner, a brisket platter with coleslaw and baked beans and my wife ordered pulled pork. We were one of only two tables in the entire main dining room when we ordered and throughout our meal but waited a surprisingly long time for our food to arrive. When it did arrive, the food looked, smelled and tasted great. The brisket I received was from the tail end of the brisket and was very thin compared to slices from the other end of the brisket I've usually received. I still received the same exact number of smaller slices I usually receive from the bigger end. Not all brisket slices are created equal and today's fell short. My wife used the salt grinder on the table and it was dirty and greasy to the point she had to excuse herself to go wash her hands. While she was gone I noticed the collection of dead flies on the window sill along our booth. Things were just dirty, makes you wonder about cleanliness in areas you can't see as a customer. Although there were a lot of staff in the kitchen and in front of the kitchen none seemed interested in anything but chatting with each other. The exception to that would be our waitress who was very interested in talking to the one other occupied table in the dining room. We had finished dinner and were waiting to pay our bill and get a to-go box for some of the coleslaw. Our waitress was deeply involved in a conversation with the other table and we waited an extended period of time. The multitude of other servers in front of the kitchen had no interest in breaking free to see if we needed anything. Finally our waitress made it back over to our table with the electronic payment machine out, handed it off to me and headed off to find a to-go container, even that seemed to take longer than it should have. Maybe Q-Daddy's is worth a try, maybe they still care and want to prove they want your business and not just ride on prior reputation. read more

Best salads in town!!!! I drove up from Miami, Florida to meet my son and daughter in law and after eating food on the road my body was craving something healthier. I ordered the chicken salad and it was amazingly good. The chicken was cooked to perfection and the salad has cranberries, nuts, red onions, blue cheese and I requested a vinaigrette dressing on the side and it was such do gooooood!!!! My husband had the BBQ chicken sandwich, my hots ordered wings and everyone really enjoyed their meal. I visited this restaurant twice during my visit and everything was fantastic on both visits. Great service! Our server gave us the run down on what to get and was extremely accommodating. Ribs, sausage, wings, sandwiches, and burnt ends were sooo flavorful. On the table, the provide you with various BBQ sauces from different regions for you to try. The Cornbread was moist and great to eat with your plate. Additionally, the sides such as warm potato salad, mac and cheese, and bbq beans were perfectly made. We went on a Monday because kids eat for .99. It was good. I got the three meat platter because I wanted to try numerous meats. I asked what was the best. The waitress said, 1/2 chicken, brisket and burnt ends. So I got brisket, chicken and St. Louis style ribs. The brisket was the worst of the three. Tastes like the pictures look. Dry and no flavor. Should have done the burnt ends. The ribs were good, but the chicken was the best. Super moist and flavorful. They give you two sides even if you get a sandwich. We've been coming to this restaurant for over 20 years and it's still a fantastic place to eat! They have daily specials during the week. But honestly, the ribs are what brings us back every single time! I also love the county Grill salad, you'll have smoked brisket and smoked chicken on it with Mari of greens and delicious tangy apples. The cornbread and butter is a favorite and a must eat since they bring them hot and fresh to your table when you sit down. I met a friend here for a quick bite and to catch up. It's been over 10 years since I was last at a County Grill. We are military and have been away. It was just as I remember it. I was happy to have the opportunity to try them since being back. The food was good. I loved some good BBQ. Our waitress helped pick out some of their popular items. I ordered my staples, pulled BBQ and brisket. They were full of flavor and very delicious. I tested out some of the BBQ sauces they had and those also were a perfect addition. You defiantly feel like you are in Texas or any other area that gives off a strong country vibe. They have a nice outdoor eating area as well. I personally did not appreciate the hostess/staff member using her vape while behind the host stand. She thought she was being sneaky, but the puff, and vapor cloud gave it away. Wow! Really good BBQ! And the prices were fair. With a fun atmosphere and great service! My wife and I shared a 3 meat platter as we wanted to sample a variety of offerings. None of them disappointed. At the top of the list were the Burnt Ends. They were so juicy and tender! I think I will order a whole plate of them the next time. Absolutely my favorite item by far. In second were the wings. There were a few different sauces to choose from and we went with the Honey Bourbon. What a great pairing! The meat was tender and carried with it a smoky taste along with the sauce. Really good. Last choice were the Back Loin Ribs (a.k.a. Baby Back). They were also really good. A portion of the ribs were quite moist, but there were some dry elements. So ... if the ribs were moist all the way through, it would have taken the second place slot (maybe, but the wings were really good). Of course, there were several sides to choose from. We went with the beans and cole slaw. Both good, but the meats stole the show (Especially the Burnt Ends). Last item ... our waitress shared with us that they had a great key lime pie. We had a little room left so we all shared a slice. She was not kidding! It was quite good and worth the extra carbs. All in all, a great experience. We will return! read more

We had the pleasure of having Molly on our first visit here. Right when you sit down they bring you delicious corn bread. We started off we a flight of beers that came out nice and quick. As an app we had Parmesan garlic wings. Great flavor and the wings were juice. For our main we had the pick 3. Burnt ends, St. Louis ribs and pulled chicken. The Burnt ends and the ribs were in the same house sauce which was fantastic. The pulled chicken was nice and moist. We will be frequenting here. Everything was delicious with an exception to the smoke Mac and Cheese it needed a little love. I had the back lion ribs (Baby back) with a side of okra and loaded bake potato. We walked in and were immediately greeted by a friendly hostess. We opted to sit at the bar for lunch. The bar tender was amazing. She let us try multiple beers while we were deciding on one for a pint sized glass. She was super friendly and accommodating. The atmosphere is exactly what you should expect a BBQ restaurant. It is very clean and inviting the staff are super friendly and nice. The food was excellent. The drinks were great. We started with the mini cornbread muffins. They were on the sweet side. They come with soft butter. We ordered the pulled pork sandwich minus the buns. The pulled pork was great plus you have a choice of 5 different BBQ sauces at your table. I prefer the "Savannah" sauce which is a mustard based sauce like a Carolina Gold sauce. Our sides were BBQ beans, Potato Salad, and Mashed Potatoes with gravy. The beans were good not great. I wish they would add pork to them or meat to give them some more flavor. The mashed potatoes with gravy were good. The potato salad was excellent. I would choose this side over the mashed potatoes. Then for dessert we had the warm banana pudding. It was different. It was similar to a bread pudding consistency. I am not a big fan of meringue but the pudding tasted good. They failed to honor a private room request made several days in advance for a Sunday 4 PM family reunion dinner. My family of 12 people, including 2 small children, arrived at the restaurant on Sunday June 14, to find that the small private room in the back of the restaurant was already occupied and the occupants were just getting their meals delivered to their table. The wait would be at least 30 minutes for the private room to be vacated. The other private area was also being used for a birthday celebration. My family was seated in the middle of the restaurant, which was loud, very busy, and chaotic to say the least. The waitress did her best in taking our order, bringing out our food, etc. but the overall experience was very disappointing. read more

This was like my 3rd or 4th time at the amazing and delicious restaurant in Hampton VA. When entering you get a down home welcome and you just know the food is going to be a Southern Delight. Our server was James and he was amazing. You can definitely expect excellent customer service and a satisfied tummy.. The little corn muffins are delicious with that honey butter to spread. There is a bar that has drinks, beer etc..... I had the burnt ends, smoked hot wings. slaw and mixed veggies. This was my first time ever having burnt butts and they were sooo tender, seasoned to perfection with that home made bbq sauce. YUM !! The wings were seasoned to the bone. I was sooooo happy. Not to mention my Fountain Coke Zero was perfect. MY ONLY recommendation is bring a WARM jacket, because it's always cold. Regulars have their jackets and sweaters, and I'm so happy that I remembered. That's the only thing that needs to be addressed is the temperature in the restaurant. County Grill is considered a Yorktown institution for me - growing up and living close by, this BBQ place always has delicious meats. I've eaten far and wide since then and I'm still quite impressed at the quality of BBQ here. This Thanksgiving, we decided to get the fried turkey and it was phenomenal. This was my first time at County Grill and will not be my last. It was that good! We sat at the bar area because there was a wait and we were starving. Only one bartender was on duty but it did not compromise our service. You can tell the staff chips in to help each other. That makes the whole experience even better. The restaurant is in a strip mall. It's very much what you would expect from a BBQ restaurant as far as the interior. We started with the wings which were smoked but not overly smoked. It was just enough so that the sauce was not overwhelming. We got the tequila lime and bourbon honey. Neither disappointed. Being that this was the first time there, we wanted everything so decided to get the 2 meat option dinner that comes with two sides. It was more than enough for 2 people and a meal to take home. The brisket and ribs were so tender. We also got the pulled pork which was so tasty and the half chicken, which was really good too. Everything was flavorful and juicy. For me, good BBQ isn't good unless the sides are chefs kiss good. This place doesn't miss! The potato salad wasn't exactly what I expected - it's definitely like a loaded baked potato salad. Not the typical mayo base like I was expecting however I was not disappointed! The baked beans - delicious. Cole slaw - everything you want it to be with BBQ. I also got fried okra bc it's just my favorite. The cornbread muffins and honey butter are a must! You have to try all the BBQ sauces. I think the mustard was my favorite. 3 stars because they do ABSOLUTELY NO quality check of their pickup/delivery orders. They just pack it and move on. I get that it's a fast environment but we are paying customers and it's really simple to read the purchase receipt and make sure the order is 100%. Every delivery order I'm missing a side, or both the sides and condiments. So order at your own risk because you won't get everything. And they really need to wear gloves when handling the cornbread. It's gross they just reuse the same parchment paper after touching EVERYTHING INCLUDING CASH AND THER PHONES. It really pushes my family to not want to order from here any more. read more

This is a BBQ joint that I will easily recommend to anyone craving BBQ. I've gone to two different locations including this one (Hampton, VA was the other) and have loved their food every time. I went to this specific location for my supervisor's retirement party. There was a lot of us, but we got a nice huge table to sit privately and the staff was very attentive and friendly with everybody. They were able to give good recommendations to some of my coworkers that didn't know what to order. And for the amount of people ordering from our huge group, they didn't get any of our orders wrong. Their food is flavorful, the portions are big and cooked just the way I like them. I am not a bread person AT ALL but I absolutely love County Grill's sweet rolls and could easily down a bunch of them in one sitting! So good! The 3 meat combo is perfect to feed my whole family (2 hungry people and 1 slightly less hungry person) and it tasted awesome too. If you have read my other reviews you most likely know that if I like a place, I go there several times. I ended up coming here twice! I recommend getting the pulled chicken. It tastes spectacular and it goes well with the Memphis-style bbq sauce. At each table there are several different bbq sauces and they are all special in their own ways. Memphis is my favorite (it is the classic bbq sauce), but there is also East Carolina, South Texas, Savanah, and another sauce I forgot the name of. Definitely try them all out and pick your fave! The free appetizer, corn muffins, were really good. The key lime pie also was the best I've ever had, but I'm a Californian, so what do I know? The only complaints I have (which aren't really even worth reading) are that the sides on the 3 meat platter are sort of small and that you cannot get a meat twice on the three meat platter! read more

Five of us visited County grill for lunch today. Their on-again off-again service issues that we've experienced at County Grill for literally 20 years continues. Unfortunately today, they were off (again). The first thing we noticed today was their typically wonderful cornbread muffins were cold. We mentioned it to the youthful waitress who brought out another basket. Unfortunately they were also cold. When we mentioned it to the waitress again, she told us that she had gotten them both from the warmer and, quote, "that's the best I can do". I've literally never had a waitress tell me there's nothing she could do about a problem we have with the meal. I was flabbergasted. When our food came out, my barbecued ribs were very tasty, but also not hot. I didn't bother telling the waitress because I figured I knew what she'd say - There's nothing I can do. Then two different times during the meal, when our group was conversing and having a good time, the waitress walked up, interrupted and started talking over everyone. She was young and I assume new at waitressing. But what she did - multiple times - was just rude. I left County Grill, still loving their food but wishing that they would find a real Manager who would teach their staff how to perform their jobs professionally. read more

We came down to the Jazz Fest again, and this place is a hit. Me and my cousin love this restaurant. The service is always friendly and on point. They are attentive and are there to make sure your needs are met while visiting. I ordered the brisket sandwich, and it was tender, though it needed some seasoning. It was still good. The wings had a great taste, but they were not spicy. And the corn muffins were a hit as well. They had room at the bar and it was busy while we were there. But no complaints. Walked in to this very crowded restaurant and within 10 minutes we were seated, our drink order was taken and delivered, and food order taken. We were provided with a basket of corn bread muffins and they were refilled as soon as our first basket was emptied. The food was delivered quickly; pulled pork plated with bbq beans and slaw and 10 bbq wings. It was hot and well seasoned. There were 5 different bottles of additional sauce on the table to add if we wanted. I also had banana pudding for dessert and my friend had bread pudding. Only reason 2 stars is the food was decent however due to the staff and the allowing intoxicated people continue to get worst. We won't be going back. There are maybe two or three barbeque restaurants located within a few miles from me. They all are really good, but the one I visited last weekend is definitely one of the three best in my area - the County Grill & Smokehouse. There are two locations of this restaurant, actually. Both have the same quality food and service, but the one I am referring to is located in Yorktown, Virginia. My Grubbing Buddy and I went on a rainy day and used a County Grill gift card that a good friend gave us as a "thank you." The food smelled incredible as we walked in, and we were immediately seated, though it was pretty crowded at the time. I ordered one of their specialty beers, which was different, but not bad at all. From the menu, I ordered the "Pick 2" half BBQ chicken and half rack of St. Louis style Ribs. My Grubbing Buddy had the house special of two large deep-fried pork chops with a side of gravy. Our sides were similar: collard greens, mixed veggies and mac and cheese. Both our waiter and our hostess were wonderful and very attentive, and the food and drinks were incredible. I ordered the Mississippi peacemaker but I got the pit master. I don't know if it's because the waitress misheard me (peacemaker could have been misheard for pit master) but I just assumed they forgot a few ingredients and didn't notice until I got my online receipt. I'm upset because the pit master was more expensive and not what I wanted. The coleslaw also did not taste right and the potato salad was just roughly made mashed potatoes. My boyfriend said his brisket was dry too. The pit master was pretty good though but I'm just upset I didn't get what I ordered. read more

The food is decent although I think the flavors are off. My Reuben seemed a bit salty although the flavor itself was good. What a great place right over the Yorktown line! Beautiful and clean interior and friendly service. If you are looking for BBQ in the area - this is the place to stop. We went there for a work Holiday party. They were able to accommodate our group of 10 in our own private room. The complimentary cornbread muffins came out hot, with soft butter. So good! They have just a slight touch of sweet (which I love), without being sugar forward. It was hard to stop eating them. I ordered the BBQ Shrimp appetizer and a house salad (because it was lunch after all). They also offer the shrimp as an entree (2 skewers instead of one). The menu says they are bacon wrapped with Gouda cheese. I really didn't taste much of the Gouda, but bacon wrapped BBQ shrimp? What's not to love? The sauce was fantastic. My salad was super fresh, and had feta cheese, which you don't usually see in a house salad, and it's a nice decision. It was HUGE, too. The blue cheese dressing was tasty, though I would have loved to see more chunks of actual blue cheese. Hubby went with the ribeye, because if steak is on the menu, that's his "go to." It was a large steak (though on the thinner side). It was cooked well - he always orders rare (and he's not kidding), although some of it was more mid-rare. I blame the that on the thinner size. He still enjoyed it, though. The star of the menu here is the "pick two," or even the "pick three." You get your choice of BBQ - pulled pork, brisket, shredded chicken, sausage, ribs, etc. and two sides. Several in our group got the pick two and there was SO MUCH food! Most everyone left with a take home box. What I was really impressed with was the BBQ sauce choices that are on the table. NC, Memphis, KY, Kansas City, TX style, and they are all made in house. This menu is made for the BBQ lover, no matter their style of choice. We will definitely hit this place up when we are in the area again - looking at you pulled pork w/Carolina sauce!
