Sandwiches and other appetizer items. Variety is important to me when I go out and eat. If Fish and Chicken isn't what you are in the mood for they offer a wonderful variety. Captain JJ's is reasonably priced & offers many location around the city. I've happened to eat at the Poplar location that day. As it was across the street from my class & I didn't feel like driving down further into midtown. The service was fast from the cashier to the food. My food was hot ready promptly & had a awesome taste quality. Feel free to check out this location or others around the city & I guarantee you won't be disappointed

First impressions aren't everything, but they ARE something. I was here for one thing, a Chicago staple- the "Italian Beef sandwich". Not to be confused with a Philly Cheesesteak or anything else ....a Chicago "beef" is a specific dish. Will Ferrell's "Anchorman" was playing loudly on a big TV with a large crack across the LED screen (the crack didn't detract from how funny that film is!). Immediately after placing my food order a couple foul smelling gentlemen wandered in, placed an order and had a seat. The place immediately cleared out. I was stuck, waiting for my order, watching "Anchorman" and trying to mouth breathe. My order took a VERY long time. Strike 1. After enduring an extended noisome session with my new Memphis friends we relocated to a nearby Starbucks for fresher air. My "Italian Beef" was good but not "great" (Lots of weird "veiny" portions to explain away... ) The basics were covered (as Sonic delivers a classic "Chicago Dog") the main ingredients are present but somehow something is missing. Service was really slow and the"locals" are still a bit too gritty to recommend this place. I think if I really want a "Beef" I'll dedicate 8 hours driving time to the Windy City I call home.

This is one of the closer locations that serves wings as early as 10am. When you have a craving, you have a craving. Walked in and I was the only customer so I was helped right away. Ordered To go: 20 piece wing half honey gold half honey hott with fries celery and carrots(additional .99)and a drink=$20which is pretty solid,in my opinion. The cashier said it would be about 15 min. I sit down and they have some weird movie playing on a big flat screen tv. Cool, whatever lol. I didn't have interest so naturally my eyes start to wander..I noticed the floors could use a good cleaning..the bottom of my flip flops stuck to the floor. They could use a new paint job on the interior also to make it look more appealing to the eye. The air vents need to be cleaned on the ceiling and some of the tiles could use replacement. I did notice the Health Department Score=96.**PLUS** As my food came up to be bagged by the cashier she was wearing gloves which I was pleased to witness.*PLUS**The food was packaged well and it felt steamy hot which was another **PLUS** The wings were tasty. I love the honey gold flavor for sure. The wings were a bit small but I'm not gonna complain about that..but if I had to criticize I'd say that they could be bigger just sayin:) Nonetheless, overall I can say I was satisfied. I wouldn't choose this place for wings as my #1 choice..unless I knew of another wing joint that opens at 10am.

Come on... its 2:43pm in the afternoon and all tables are dirty, floor is filthy. Captain JJ.... where are you guy? Dont you care anymore? Clean it up. This place has great dive potential. Ice some beers man and play some music. Turn off that trashTV! Cheap food, pretty good junk food... i will be back

My first visit & This burger looks like it was made in an elementary school cafeteria. It has NO lettuce because they "ran out" of it.

A prime location for a prime steakhouse. The service was strong as was the pacing. I found the server a bit too eager to explain the restaurant and the menu. I'm a ribeye eater so I had a pretty good idea I was getting a ribeye before I went in. I think the talking is used as a way to upsell and push guests towards opaquely priced off-menu "specials" which from my understanding are always on offer (such as their deviled eggs and bone marrow sauce). We started with the beef tartare and duck ravioli. I preferred the tartare, which had a nice spicy seasoning throughout. The duck ravioli had an excellent sauce on it, too. For our mains, I got the prime boneless ribeye ($68) and my brother got the prime strip ($56). We also shared the Yume A5 Wagyu experience ($225), letting us try three different cuts of Wagyu side by side. For sides (about $15/each), we did the fontina potatoes, truffle honey tots, and carrots. We also added the gulf prawns ($21), foie gras ($14), and bone marrow sauce (~$20) which was prepared table side and was plenty to share. It was very rich and peppery, though a bit of a salt bomb. For dessert, we shared the French toast bread pudding with maple butter ($14) which is one of my favorite bread puddings I've tried. They also brought my brother a dessert since it was his birthday, it was something like a raspberry mousse with coconut foam and a sharp raspberry sauce. Excellent. The Yume experience was a big motivation in coming here, as getting to try cuts of A5 Wagyu next to cuts of regular (albeit prime) beef is unique in the Memphis area and really for hours around. It was priced as an experience rather than a food item. It did not disappoint, nor did the prime steaks. The A5 is so unbelievably tender by comparison. My favorite was the ribeye, but I'm biased. My brother, normally a strip guy, agreed with me there. The potato sides were underwhelming, particularly for the price. I don't know how I let my brother talk me into buying him $15 tater tots for his birthday. I could get the carrots again, though. My total was $800 for the two of us for the above food, six cocktails, and tax and tip. A big chunk of that was the Yume experience as well as the drinks (we were celebrating!). If we were to go back, it would be closer to $350 for the two of us, and I would go for the prime ribeye with foie gras again, no need for Wagyu or sauce. I enjoy the sister restaurants in this restaurant group (Coastal Fish, Flight, Southern Social) and frankly I'd bet Porch is the cash cow of the group due to the relatively poor value proposition. We had a great experience exploring the finest steak and accompaniments one could wish for. But, for my money, Coastal does a pretty good steak too.

I feel like this place embodies the essence of my inner peace somehow. It was born as a overflow bar for Iris from the lore I hear. To me, as I see it, this place became Chef Kelly's escape to reality as far as food, atmosphere, and service are concerned. I think this place presents his personality in his relaxed more chill version. If you have ever been to Iris, specifically, when it was next door, you would understand what I mean. When it was the tiny place it had some kind of pretentiousness to it that just turned me off. I only ate there once. It would take weeks to get a reservation before he moved it and the constant limelight had to be a lot of pressure. This place though.... I could come here three times a week no issue. In fact, I actually wish that I could eat here three days a week. Second Line is moving soon. They are going back to being next door to Iris in the newer Laurelwood location. In some ways I wonder if Chef needs that jovial comfort of a place next to Iris to keep him grounded. I do hope the charm of this is somehow transferred, but looking out the windows into Cooper the last time I was here Dec '25, just will not be a possibility in that shopping center it's headed to. That will be lost. He's a great guy! Hell of a Chef! World class employer! Tremendous philanthropist! A leader in the City of Memphis! Please go support him in the new location. Now.... All that BS and I ain't said shit about the food and why I like this place so much. If you scroll through my photos you will see almost every dish that has ever been on the menu here. Some are fantastic! All are very good! I have had nothing but great food here for many years! I have only had one bad meal here. Catfish Picante and it is long gone it seems! I wrote a long ass draft I never published (thank god), after that visit. I do believe it was my first time here and I almost didn't return. What a waste that would have been. My favorites now are Sweet Heat Oysters, Chicken Livers with pepper jelly, that lobster knuckle sandwich from waaaay back, spinach Madeline, and of course... the Red Beans and Rice. The desserts are always killer as well. I guess I'll catch you at the new place soon! Love you guys!! '25 - Finale

As a child I grew up on fried fish filets and hush puppies until my grandfather had to retire and sell his restaurant due to his Health. He still cooks up a mess of catfish for us about two or three times a year when we visit. Yum! My standards for good catfish are extremely high. Good fried catfish is not greasy, light cornmeal batter, tender flaky inside, and slightly crispy on the outside. Sounds simple enough but the truth of the matter is... Good fried catfish takes skill. After an epic searched for any decent catfish in Memphis and surrounding areas that took a few years ... My family and I decided to give up. And when I heard about Soul Fish it took some considerable convincing to get them to go. We where, none of us, disappointed! Soul Fish is without a doubt the best Catfish in Memphis. It is perfectly fried... Hushpuppies are tasty, coleslaw edible if not always yummy, fried pickles crisp and tart, pickle green tomatoes so yummy I could swim in them, and vegetables always cooked and seasons well (special recognition to the cabbage, broccoli, and black eyed peas). The service is always friendly, fast, efficient, and correct. The blackened catfish is pretty tasty too ... Sometimes they get a little heavy handed on the seasoning. Deserts are pretty great as well. My sister loves the Mississippi mud chocolate thingy they have (I'm not a chocolate fan). I've introduced many people (about 40 or so) to Soul Fish - locals and visitors alike - and no one ... And I mean not a single one of them where disappointed. So why four stars instead of five? True... the catfish is the best in Memphis - however it is not the best I've ever had. And Sometimes a filet or two at Soul Fish fall short of perfection... However ... I'm a regular and a fan of Soul Fish Cafe. If you have spent hours and disappointed meals trying to find good catfish in Memphis ... Look no further ... This is the place for you. I promise you will not Be disappointed!

Memphis is a slight detour on our way back to Texas, but there was no way we were settling for fast food along the highway. We wanted good seafood--fresh, satisfying, and worth the stop. So glad we chose this spot. From the outside, it's simple and unassuming. Inside, it feels like a slightly bougie fish cafe--clean, cozy, and well-kept, with subtle holiday decor and that warm Southern hospitality greeting you at the door. Our server, Denise, was professional, knowledgeable, and genuinely welcoming. The one-page menu keeps it simple, and she walked us through it along with the daily special. We ordered the gumbo, salmon burger, and a grilled salmon plate--everything tasted fresh and cooked to order. A perfect seafood meal in Tennessee. We left full, happy, and already planning what to try next time. Definitely a spot worth revisiting.
