Nice boat ride and snorkeling. We were having fun with the rough seas on the way back but then it got a bit too rough and they cleared everyone of the trampolines in the front of the boat. Suddenly there was a larger wave that the captain did not slow down for and everyone in the front of the boat was drenched and a lady was thrown forward on to the trampoline area and she got a bit bruised but otherwise ok. Great customer service ! Their hours change depending on the wind, if it's a great day out they will be on the water and that's awesome to see. If they ever aren't there and you need something, you can call and they are responsive and fair about pricing. Treat you like a real human and sailor / kiter / whatever your into. There is a radical selection of womens waterwear there, like super fab. They also do lessons and teach a variety of water sports, in a clean, easy setting that makes you want to get out there again. I recommend foiling lessons for folks that are interested in upgrading to the newest and most exciting part board sports! They are down to earth and friendly and fair over there. Captain Kirks is the besttt - I highly recommend Giampiero for lessons! I found this school by word of mouth - I started stopping by the beach where the kites are and talking to some of the people there because I wanted to pick up the sport. Being a woman it was pretty intimidating but one of the nice regulars at the beach told me that if I take lessons with anyone, it should be Giampiero. I ended up walking up to him and the owner of the kite school that day to ask for lessons and ended up booking them about a week later. I'm so glad I did! Giampiero was a fantastic teacher who's helped me so much in learning and loving this sport. He has been kite surfing and teaching professionally for many years and is very experienced, friendly, and patient... It's literally like he flies the kite in his sleep. He made the learning process so accessible and way less scary, was flexible with the schedule to make sure the wind was right, and helped me learn the sport pretty fast. He was not out to rip me off or get me to take necessary lessons. I made so many mistakes during lessons but he always helped me see what I did wrong to fix it for the future - very easy going but super detail oriented. I highly recommend him as an instructor for any beginners AND especially people wanting to learn more advanced stages of the sport like jumping or hydrofoiling. He has been teaching for over 25 years all over the world (Italy, Brazil, etc), has trained instructors, and still actively does jumping competitions (and ranks 1st place). If you want to be trained by an expert, ask for him! Another thing I really loved about this school is the way they helped me with gear. I ended up getting a really nice used foil kite that they had been using for lessons for a great price, my harness, and an impact vest. The owner helped me find gear that worked for my budget and also gave great recommendations since she's also a professional kiter. They helped me figure out which kite to get to match what I wanted and gave countless hours of advice on how I can improve. Giampiero and the owner Sabrina will literally help you on the beach whenever even when you're not in lessons. I even ended up ripping my kite accidentally on the beach last season and Giampiero was able to literally sew it back together for me with new material... they do repairs too! I am super grateful to have found this kite school and will definitely be continuing lessons this season. read more

Complete case of Bait and Switch. I bought a Groupon to go Kiteboarding, when we arrived the first thing the instructor said was, "You won't be going in the water today." I am so upset that I spent $199 to fly a kite. Is that a joke? Later, the owner, Kirk called me. He ended up yelling at me on the phone and ended up hanging up. The picture in the Groupon showed a kiteboarder on the water. Do not go here to Kiteboard, you will spend $200 learning how to fly a kite. read more

I saw the Kite Boarding Groupon and decided to give it a try. Before I invested in a 100$ Groupon I did my research and I would recommend anyone who gets into Kite Surfing do the same, as it is kind high upfront cost and price. If you're interested in Kite Boarding, be prepared to spend about $600 on lessons, a $150 on a trainer kite, then about $3000 on your actual surf kite, harness, wetsuit, helmet, and board. The first lesson covered by the groupon was just flight school, which I'll be honest was very useful, but a little boring and little frustrating how little time you get with the kite when you are splitting it with 3 other people. When I filled out the paperwork for this lesson I ended up paying for the next two lessons, which they apparently didn't The second class however was amazing. I had a private lesson with Daniel and we spent about 2 hours on the land covering all the maneuvers with a 12 Meter Kite, followed by some body drags. I was hooked from that point on. I went back to the shop and bought a 12 Meter Cabrinha Switch Blade, a Dakine Harness, and a wet suit. Their prices were cheaper than I have seen online. The third lesson was getting on the board, which was explained very well. They would get 5 stars except they kept losing my paper work that said I had paid and I had to repeatedly show them my receipt to prove I already paid for lesson, Found out later they was because of a typo in the computer and some one put down a wrong spelling of my name. read more

The Captain makes it happen! Love this little shop. They've got tons of gear and Tom, Kirk, and Daniel are very knowledgeable and helpful. I had a board fall off the top of the car and was totally drying up without being able to get out and SUP. They helped me get back on the water with a nice little Jimmy Styks. Great price for the board, bag, paddle, leash and fins. Seriously, can't beat this deal if you're trying to get on the water quick or you're a lighter weight rider looking for a sturdy board that you can take out for cruising as well as waves. They're very good at helping you pick out the right equipment for your level to ensure you have a safe, and happy time on the water. I also picked up a new paddle, they've got Chinook and they cut my CF paddle to my specs right there, attached the ergo handle, and I was set (Dan even offered to tape up the edges of my paddle while I was there and ran out to his car to grab some ET). When my Thule hard racks came in, they even made sure I was all good to go before I loaded my board on top and took off. Very helpful guys! Even heard about their kite boarding lessons and that they have a resort down in Baja open year round. Super excited for El Nino this year, so I'm sure I'll be back there many times for the essentials (new straps, leash, fins, a JP SUP, you know how it is. :) ) read more

Bought 2 boards (HiFly Matrix S and Free 279), 1 mast, bunch of other windsurf gear. Simply awesome experience! Tom and Kirk were always there to provide helpful insight on any question I had. I can see myself coming here often in the future when my urge to buy new gear comes back! For future customers, the beach you should go to is Cabrillo Beach. Don't park where ALL the cars are. Look for the way to get to the fishing pier area or just look at the light house. Find the road that gets you there. Can't miss it. read more

As a repeat customer of Captainkirks I can vouch from experience and highly recommend taking lessons and purchasing water sports supplies from this organization. I have taken kiting lessons from other companies and never had such great attention and customer service from the instructor and owner. She let me demo one of her own personal kites. Okay, I'm a bit confused at all the bad reviews for this place. The rating on yelp made me hesitant but since San Pedro is so close and the Groupon deal was pretty sweet, I booked for me and my little brother to come and learn a 2 hour lesson. Our experience was pretty fair. I called on Monday to book for that Saturday and was informed that they had a class that was waiting for more people and that I should expect to be there at about 8:30 AM at the store. We drove there in the morning (if you're coming from the SP bridge, you'll see the store right away when you get off the exit on your right). It's a pain if you miss the store because you can't left turn after pulling a U-turn up ahead. Anyways, Amy was our instructor. She had us sign some waivers then asked for $3 fee for each person. (For tax? I can't remember). I told her they should really mention this ahead of time on the phone- I was lucky I had some cash, I'm usually a plastic only girl! She said she'd tell her boss. We helped load some boards into the back of her pick up and then we waited around for the last pair that never showed up. Our group of 4 (two girl friends and us) headed over to Cabrillo beach with her, a short 5 minute drive up. We followed behind in our cars and when we reached the beach, helped carry the boards down to the sand. (The beach charges parking and our entire 2 hour stay was $2 for each car. Once again, bring cash.) She spent about 5-10 minutes going over some basics- how to mount the boards, make sure to get the fin clear of the sand when you go in, where to stand, positioning yourself, how to hold your paddle, methods to turn, etc. After that we just all grabbed a board and paddle and pushed off into the water. It was really trial by error- I'm probably the most unbalanced person around and I fell 5 times total. Everyone fell at least once (except my brother who spent half his time cruising on his butt and knees.) But it's pretty easy to climb back on the board and the water isn't that cold. Amy stayed on her board at a pretty close distance. I noticed one of the other girls was wearing a life preserver but neither of us had been offered one when we arrived at the store earlier. We stayed on the water, going around the beach basically in a large figure eight. There's not much to see in Cabrillo beach except sand and rocks so that was a bit disappointing. The water was calm enough for even me to stay upright in some areas though, so I did enjoy the work out. Amy gave us some general advice when we were struggling but otherwise just let us paddle around until 10:15. That's when she said we could take some pictures if we had our cameras or just finish and head towards the shore. The experience was fun and the price wasn't too bad with Groupon. I did feel it was a bit unfair that we didn't actually have 2 hours IN the water and that the time included checking in, waiting for other students, loading boards, unloading boards, etc. All in all, we weren't actually in the water for more than 1.5 hours tops. Amy was friendly and easy going though and I did not have a traumatic experience like some of the other reviews implied. All in all, better than expected. She mentioned that the store rented boards out and you could pick them up the night before. How you would transport it without a rack or a pick up, I have no idea. read more

How do they stay in business?! I wanted to book a SUP lesson. Called the store. Sabrina, the owner, was clueless. Said she'll contact the instructor, then call me back, but encouraged me to come to the store. The store closes at 5. I have a job, so there is no way I would make it before closing, especially because you can't articulate why I had to go to the store. Several hours later, no call. I called Sabrina again before the shop closed. She told me to text her my email so she can provide information. Done. The next morning-nothing. "Do you want my money?" text got a flurry of texts from Sabrina asking to take the lesson on Saturday instead of Sunday due to the weather. OK, fair; the follow up text to inform me that the lesson is at 8. OK. Then a text asking for my name. At this point I was done. If I wanted to text on no end, I would have texted a girlfriend. I just wanted to book a lesson without two days of prodding, texting, and still getting nowhere. I gave up and told her I am taking my business elsewhere. Sabrina, word of advice, pick up the phone and talk to potential clients. Do what you need to do to get our business and keep your word. Every girl scout I know runs a better business operation selling cookies than what you do with your "business." read more

I have no association with Kirk other than I have frequented the shop. Just wanna say Captain Kirk is a wonderful shop for windsurfing, kiting, and sup needs. Captain Kirks does board repair, sail repair and shares years of sail knowledge and water wisdom. They alway have the piece of hardware you need to go sail that day. Kirk and his team sail local and have the product experince to meet your needs. They also are really willing to talk to people and understand what they need in terms of gear and advice. Haven't been to Mexico yet but I heard Kirk's place is very nice also. Couple comments on the comments: Every kiteboard / windsurf school first lesson is on the land. You spend time understand concepts and safety before entering the water. Then you progress to kite control, kite power, and the basisc of water starting.. At the end of this lesson you should have the skills to go on the water safely. Yes you learn how to fly a kiteboard rig safely so you can go KITE-board safely. Also takes some gaul to complain about canceling the day of an event and still being charged. That is standard practice and you would find same thing in Hawaii or any resort destination. read more

Review for the School: I started Kiteboarding at a different school last year in Belmont Shores and I had diffulties because of the continuous change of instructors, high prices and not so much passion in teaching. I have met Giampiero and Sabrina on the beach always at Belmont Shore this spring under their school canopy and in ONE lesson Giampiero made me kite the all day without any more problems and even going upwind. He did fine tune all my equipment, harness and settings, gave me a great lesson and.. Voilà!! I finally started kiting and I still going every week! They are extremely passionate and knowledgeable and.. They are owners and teachers. For sure a smaller school reality but THE ONE to go with. SHOP : After a couple of months I saw their shop and couldn't believe how many top brands they have. Sabrina is usually there while Giampiero take care of the students and school at the beach and in the water with us. If you need to buy equipment that is also the only store in our South California area that I have seen so well equipped. You will find everything you need : new best brands or even some used in perfect shape as well. read more

I spend most of the year overseas, but I need a new kite I always wait until I can get back to LA and Captain Kirks. He has the best prices, most knowledge, widest selection, and best service. In ten years of kiting, I've never been disappointed by Kirk and Tom. Five stars, easily. I was surprised, then, to see the one-star reviews. It seems some of the negative experiences occurred because the customer wanted to change plans at the last minute. Maybe they should realize the difficulty this presents for the business owner, and also how it would impact other customers who did not change their plans. Kirk has always been very concerned with getting people stoked, so I simply cannot believe that he wouldn't try to reschedule for a different day, or try to make the situation right. Even today, I think they could contact him and come to an agreement that leaves everyone happy. As for the guy who thought he was going to be kiteboarding in the ocean on the first day just because there was a picture on the Groupon ad: brah, you need to get it together. Learning to fly the kite is really the whole deal, and I don't know of any responsible instructor who guarantees you will get wet on the first day. read more

I had an issue with my car and was not able to make it to the time I was scheduled for. I asked him if it was possible to reschedule and he VERY RUDELY said no. He didn't care in the slightest about my car problems and told me I'd have to repay the full amount for another lesson. No compassion or understanding for another human being. This review reflects the store's policies (or lack thereof), NOT the instructor or the integrity of their equipment, programs, etc. I have been going to Captn' Kirk's for 20+ years now... they are an amazing place. THE place to go for windsurfing (and now kitesurfing, of course). But, there are a few things that, if you will allow me to give a little perspective as an open-minded consumer, are "bombing" this business... because they could be much more consumer friendly, ESPECIALLY if they are running Groupons, and they are getting more "average" or "mainstream" people (and not just hardcore wind-junkies)! 1. Have a website with all info. about kitesurfing lesson-- where to meet, etc. 2. Don't make people drive TO THE LOCATION OF THE STORE IN SAN PEDRO to pay the $9 tax and sign the waiver forms, only to drive back the way they came, 30 minutes backwards, to the site of the actual lesson. Waste of time and money, and frustrating with traffic!!! Again, instructor is best ever! I had Daniel. His integrity is terrific, and he is an ASSET to this business! read more

What a ripoff. This place tries to sell you something the minute you walk in, mostly figuring out how much money you will spend, don't care if you have experience. If your new to the sport of SUP or kiting, stay away from this place, not sure I would buy from them with experience either. Even when I went back to return a $10 item that broke the same day I bought it, they refused a replacement. Great experience kiteboarding for the first time. Spoke with Kirk on phone and he setup 1st kiteboarding lesson with Bill. Bill is super knowledgeable and very patient. Starts lesson with safety instructions, then practice with trainer kite, and ended lesson with the big kite. Bill walked me through everything from setting up gear to flying. I've paid for 2 windsurfing lessons for my son at Capt. Kirks and couldn't be happier. 1st lesson was with Daniel and the 2nd was with Bill. Both were awesome teachers and we definitely got our money's worth. I'll be renting equipment for him this weekend so he can continue to apply his newly learned skills. I'll admit that I've had to call back a few times to get through but no big deal. The shop was packed when we got there and it was clear that business is booming. Also realize that there are time windows where those who are taking lessons have to arrive. Combine that with people wanting to rent and a ringing phone and you'll understand why you have to leave a message or call back sometimes. As far as the reviewers who bought a Groupon and thought they were going to kitesurf right away - do a little research ! You have to know how to fly the kite before you can even think about training on the other elements of the sport or getting into the water. This is not something you learn in a 2 hour beach training session and then go ripping through the waves like all the videos you see. read more

Took a beginners Windsurfing lesson here this weekend. Our instructor Bill was very knowledgeable and did a thorough review of all the basics on shore with us before setting us off to sail. The wind was just right for a beginner and we were able to get a really good feel for what we were doing. I would definitely want to windsurf again and maybe take a second lesson at Captin Kirks. The store is no-frills but the semi-private class is just right. Excellent way to try windsurfing locally. They provide all the equipment for the class, wetsuit rental is $10. read more

If I could give this place zero stars I would. I got the Groupon for this place because I wanted to try kiteboarding. They offer promotional discounts and it seems reasonable, but they are not up front with you. You may pay $100 or $200 to take the first class and it is an absolute joke. I showed up at Seal Beach to meet the instructor, and not only was he 30 min late but I gave the shop a call and they were being super defensive and aggressive when I tried to ask them why. The first "lesson" is a complete joke. I was hoping to get in the water and try a little surfing but the first thing the instructor said was "there's no way your getting in the water." Why would I pay $100 or more to not get in and try it. All we got was a lecture for 2 hours about how dangerous Kitesurfing is. Are you kidding me? I went skydiving and I got a shorter talk than this! This is just a scam to get people to take a series of classes with them. DO NOT GO WITH THIS COMPANY! You dont need to pay some idiot $100/hr to chill by the beach, to talk about kitesurfing (...and killing seals, little children, and dolphins with the kite). Completely ridiculous! read more

If I could give this place less than one star, I would. My husband and wanted to get our family into paddle boarding. We bought a Groupon for two so we could try it out (before investing in equipment). There was ONE Saturday at 0830 available to use the Groupon. When my husband's work required him on that Saturday, I called Captain Kirk's Friday evening. I left a message explaining the situation and asked them to call me back. They called me back at 1030 Saturday morning. The guy said to me, "Yeah, uh, you called us, like, after we closed last night." Surprised at this small business that MUST be struggling in this economy, I said, "You mean you don't have after-business calls rolled over to someone's cell?" The guy said, "Well no. We need some down time." That, my friends, says it all. I can guarantee I won't be "disrupting" their "down time." lol. read more

I got screwed. Here is how... I got back to windsurfing after 10 years, rented equipment first and then decided to buy. I told them EXACTLY what I wanted with preference to used equipment and they pushed me towards a year old board that was left at Starboard. After some online research I was skeptical about this boards and suggested other options from other firms that they claim they work with but they assured me that this board will be great for me. I spent $3,000 with them and when I got there to pick up my equipment at a pre-agreed time the equipment was still in the box completely uninstalled. It turned out that they expected me to install it myself (straps, fin) although I didn't touch these things for years. Obviously, everything broke deep in the water to my great enjoyment... The board itself (AtomIQ) turned out to have all the problems that I was concerned about: nose dives, spinouts, flip overs. I did much much better with the crappy old board they rented me than this expensive monster they crammed into my throat. They were very nice so I trusted them but I'm not proud of it now since I'm very unhappy with the board they sold me and with the level of service they provided. Caveat emptor! Last, the ultimate test for any business is how they deal with problems and unsatisfied clients. When I conveyed my grievance and asked to return the board they didn't even respond. read more

These guy's came across as a disorganized bunch. I guess they can't handle the number of people hitting them up through their group on. I prepaid and they told me to be down at the shop at 10 - 10:30 I showed up at 10:33. No one who worked there was around. The owner's wife who was very sweet and helpful but unsure of the process etc tried to get me through as quick as possible but didn't understand how the credit card machine worked didn't know what beach I was supposed to be at did her best to get me where I needed to be. Ended up not getting to the beach till 20 minutes after the lesson started and no one had told me where to go so just had to wander the beach. After wandering up and down the beach about to give up I call the office to see if I can get a refund and the guy starts rudely yelling at me. He claims that I must have been told about where to go cause they always do. When I try to explain his wife didn't give me any directions he says "well you know how women are". Yeah jerk your wife is giving up her sunday morning because you can't afford to staff your shop correctly. The actual lesson was ok, We bassically got a safety lecture then played with trainer kites for a while. No real instruction just sat there playing with them in the air. I was doing figure 8's and he came by and said to do some steeper dives so I did and he starts telling me to control it up in the air and do easy figure 8's. When I said didn't you tell me to do steeper dives he got mad and lectured me about how I couldn't control my kite when it felt like I was doing exactly what he told me to do. All in all reading the wikipedia page and practicing with a trainer kite would have been an equivalent lesson in my opinion. Gonna shop around and find another place. Between the lackluster instruction and the rudeness and misogyny wasn't what I would call a great experience. read more

Took my first SUP lesson from Dan. Loved it so much I made another lesson appointment. Then, I had to reschedule because I got pretty banged up the first time but had already paid for my lesson. Called Captain Kirk got the lesson rescheduled no problem. What I really like is that the lesson was fun, Dan was receptive to me and my husband. We had different levels of comfort in the water and Dan quickly figured that out and adapted to us. The equipment Captain Kirk uses for SUP is in good condition, easy to use and they have the instructor bring it to the beach. I think that makes it convenient, fun, relaxing and kinda a no brainer. I'm not sure why this establishment would offer Groupon. I called to make my reservations over 3 weeks ago. I was told that most of the weekends were sold out, so we settled on Sept 4. Kirk told me that before we could confirm, he would get a group together and notify by phone. I received a message on 8/24 letting me know that Sept 4th was on and to call back and confirm. I called within 45 minutes, spoke to Kirk and confirmed that we would be there. On September 4th, I woke up at 7am, drove 30 minutes from my home, and when I got there was told that I didn't have a reservation and that there was no room for me and my friend! Kirk asked what number I called, who I spoke to and if I had the right business. I played back the message he left me on my cell phone and I also showed him my call history to let him know I called. He told me he was full and had no more equiptment. HE ONLY HAS FIVE BOARDS PEOPLE! IN A POPULATION OF OVER 4 MILLION, ONLY FIVE BOARDS. Who only has five boards? Really?! SO, HE SENT US HOME! NO APOLOGY, NO ATTEMPT TO MAKE IT RIGHT NOTHING! So this is what I suggest if you plan on going on this excursion. CALL AT LEAST 10 TIMES TO MAKE SURE YOUR RESERVATION IS CORRECT!
