Absolutely HORRIFIC for Thanksgiving dinner. Server was TERRIBLE... and I mean terrible. No water, had to ask for a water refill, had to ask for bread, had to ask for more bread, dirty dishes were in front of us, had to pick them up to give to a busser (which I had to call them over). Had to ask yet again if they could light up the candle for the table. Of course there was nothing in the candle fluid container, had to ask them to change it. Set menu (was not told to me when I made the reservation). Sat out in the tent, NOT good... just a terrible experience. Server came up and just about said hello (Lauren), needs to retrained. WOW you've been there for what 60 years? 2 hostesses and a busser and another was hovering round the hostess station just talking it up... no attention to customers. Inside in the main restaurant I've had 5 star meals I've had their crab cakes, SeaBass Rockefeller, Grouper with Crab Hash, Crab Mac & Cheese, SheCrab Soup, Crab AuGratin (notice a pattern yet?), their steaks look perfect, I'm just too tempted by their seafood dishes. Portions are huge & presentation is gorgeous! Service has been fantastic! Attentive & friendly. The kitchen also kindly accommodated a few changes/requests. This is our go to spot for birthdays, anniversaries, etc. But I see many complaints about the bar food at the outdoor Tiki. I can only comment on what I've had & it was fantastic! I get it every time & haven't even bothered looking to try anything else. The crab cake panini! So it's not like a traditional panini & it's almost impossible to eat as a sandwich. But I literally crave it every few weeks & totally indulge! It's on a toasted focaccia roll - yum, topped with soft greens - enough that this is more like a salad, cherry tomatoes, red onions, kalamata olives (??? - I know, I thought kinda odd too!), a crab cake that is full of giant lumps of crab (barely any breading & it's huge), drizzled with their house balsamic vinaigrette dressing (I got it on the side the first time I ordered because ??? What - vinaigrette dressing??? Not tartar? -and the answer is OMG YES!) & crumbled blue cheese (???again, seriously??? No! Ahhh but turns out - another YES!!!). You can add a side of fries, but the sandwich (not a sandwich) is so huge, I'm full without any sides. So the rest of the menu may be blah "Bar food", but the Crab Cake Panini is awesome! We also always order the appetizer cheese & crackers. It's literally a full tub of the delish cheese you get in the main restaurant when you first sit down. The app comes with a plate full of crackers. It's so big , we just nibble a few while waiting on our Panini & put the lid back on the cheese, box the crackers & take it home. Next day snacks! Score! Prices on dinners in the main restaurant run $25-$35 & for the portion size, presentation & deliciousness...well worth the price. That Crab Cake Panini runs $16 & change & it's worth EVERY penny!!! And for those complaining about a high bill after noting they had a few drinks.... yeah, alcohol is expensive. If you have a few drinks, your bill is going to be on the high side. Don't like it, don't drink! So, basically, I've never had a bad experience & NEVER had a bad meal. Love The Captain's Inn! Can't wait to go back!!! read more

I wrote a 5 star review a short while ago, and nothing is more sad than seeing one of the best restaurants ever go way down hill. I understand that we are still in the clutches of this Covid issue, but that is a sad excuse for the direction tis restaurant has taken. It seems like all of my favorite menu items are now gone. And when I questioned that, the manager told me that she could have the chef make me one of my favorites, the seafood fra diavlo. That was great, except, it was listed as a $24.00 item on the old menu, and now she wanted $44.00 for that meal. I told her to forget it, I did not want that at such an inflated price. The meal I ended up getting was very good, and I enjoyed it, but it was not one of the items I go to this restaurant to get. We also ordered the bacon wrapped scallops for an appetizer. It was very tasty, but the scallops were a fraction of the size we are used to. All in all the service was excellent, and the food was good, but the entire experience was disappointing. I'll go back in the future, but in the distant future. It's time to find a new place to go to for the duration. read more

I'm fairly new to NJ, and discovered this place through a meet up group that I joined. On the night that our group met there, my first impression of this place is that the servers who work there are most accommodating, courteous, and efficient. It was a prime rib special night, so I went for it. Prime rib came out exactly as I requested it to be cooked, and it was delicious! Not fatty, lean, and it was as easy to cut, as if you were slicing through butter. It's a busy place, has a tiki bar across the street, too. My only regret is that I didn't make early reservations for what seemed like a fabulous Easter buffet dinner for my family and I. And, missed out.... My husband and I came from Brooklyn to try this place. We were completely stunned! From the start, the hostess was very sweet and let us choose our own table. Our waitress Adrienne was also very sweet. We ordered Bloody Mary's, my husband ordered his with a double shot, he usually complains about the drink when he does this (not enough alcohol) but he was pleased. As was I. I just wish they would garnish the top more (add a shrimp, a celery stick, and larger olives) We ordered, oysters which when I asked what kind they were, our waitress kindly went to ask the chef, they were Chesapeake Bay oysters, delicious! We ordered our son the Crab Mac. It was LOADED with crab and absolutely delightful! The clam steamers were also on point. The escargot was in a pesto kind of sauce, very delicious and different than most of the escargot I've tried. My least favorite dish was the filet mignon sliders. The meat was great but the whole mix left to be desired. But hey, this is a seafood place. I wasn't disappointed. I can't wait to come back. read more

I ordered "Steamers" which were very good. However, the "Fish and Chips" that I had were comparable to processed fish patties that are available at fast food restaurants for a quarter of the price. Used to love the tiki bar. They changed their menu last year and everything is extremely expensive.. Spent over $200 for 6 people and all we got was a la carte items equivalent to an appetizer. I've gone to the captains inn and the tiki bar multiple times over the last twenty years. I've never disappointed. Last weekend we had our wedding reception in one of the back rooms. It was amazing. From the moment we booked them Debbie has been awesome and helpful with everything including things that she definitely did not have to help with. The food was amazing and I have had many people that attended our reception tell us that our wedding was the best wedding they have ever been to. We will continue to visit the captains inn for the rest of our lives. If I ever need a place to hold some kind of a banquet it will, without a doubt be there. read more

I attended a lunch here after a funeral mass. The widow had invited many people to this place noted for its fish dinners. The soup course consisted of escarole with polpette, known in this country as the wedding soup. This soup was a favorite of the decease. It was very good. A Caesar salad was next. Everyone at my table liked it. For the entree I had the assorted broiled seafood and my sons had the beef tenderloin. They said it was perfectly done to their taste. The fish was moist, and the shrimp was not overcooked. The one clam casino was dry with breadcrumbs. The dessert was a selection of pastries that were fair to good. I'm not into pastries, but these appeared to have been brought in. I had one and it was good, others said the mini cannoli was soggy. But overall the first three courses did not disappoint. The widow was quite pleased with the service as well as the food. I admit the service was attentive. They do a lot of parties, so the wait servers have it down pat. read more

Another local joint that has good food and an awesome tiki bar during the summer months. The main restaurant can have a tad steep prices depending on what you order but the bar menu and the menu at the tiki bar are more reasonable but don't expect a 5 star restaurant. It's a tiki bar after all. We frequently take our boat out, dock right outside the Tiki bar and enjoy s good meal, drink, and laughs with friends. I love the atmosphere of the Tiki Bar. Service has always been good and staff friendly. However the 3 stars comes because of a $12.00 ceaser salad that was so small I would have been better picking one up at Wawa for four bucks and that would have included chicken. Added chicken to salad at Tiki bar was $5.00 more. On the other hand quesadilla with chicken was huge. The Thai salmon tasted as if they dumped a jar of pre-mixed sauce you find at the grocery store on some overcooked fish. The shrimp were completely devoid of any flavor- ever tried seasoning them with a dash of old bay? For a price tag of almost $50 with the mandatory 18% gratuity you'd be better off going to a place that actually takes pride in the food that comes out of their kitchen. 5 Stars ALL THE WAY!! Celebrated my Dad's 90th Birthday there over the weekend. The food couldn't have been any better! The owner/chef and his wife could not have been any nicer and accommodating! There's no wonder this place had such a wait when we got there. Samantha, our waitress, was great! Attentive, but not over bearing at all. The menu is creative with plenty of good choices for everyone in our party. I had about five in mind right up to the second I ordered, and decided on the Mate's Delight and it delivered. Nice variety of seafood and a healthy portion. Other dishes ordered in our party were Mussels Marinara, Prime Rib, Seafood Fra Diavolo, Oysters and several soups that were delicious. Great food and atmosphere. Colorful cloth napkins, breadsticks and a butter and cheese spread that was very tasty. Only thing I wasnt thrilled about was the new york clam chowder which tasted like vegetable soup and no clam flavor. We have been to Captains Inn many times, usually for an early dinner on Sunday and three or four times for Thanksgiving dinner. It is a bit old fashioned and the service can be just OK, but the food is consistently good, prices are reasonable, and the view of the marina and river across the street is very nice. This is an OK place for the older crowd - like us - but will not appeal to anyone under 40. read more
