We ordered soup and some fried oysters..... just 2 of us.... there was only 10 people in the restaurant total and half of them already had their food.... the soup showed up in 10 minutes (and it was very good), but then 15 minutes after we had finished our soup still no oysters... yet the 2 table of people that had come in after us were already eating. Seems the problem was out waitress, she was to bust talking to 1 certain table of people to refill the drink of the man sitting behind me, hard not to notice him, he was waiving his glass in the air..... but she managed not to notice him. Then we wave her down and asked for our check, she had to HOLLER across the room , "tell the cook to cancel the oysters these people are leaving".... nice... we had been there 30 minutes at this point.... everyone else had eaten or were eating, even the people that came in after us.... This is our 2nd visit to Matlacha & our 2nd visit to this restaurant. Both times we were amazed. This is not a fancy restaurant & that's what we love about it. The captain's platter will feed you for at least 2 meals & the baked potatoes are huge. And save room for dessert....its the best part of the meal. The pies are to die for. The shrimp bisque is good & I have heard the chowder is amazing. That's on my list to try next time. However don't go here if you expect fine dining. The view is awesome & did I mention the PIES!!!!! Although they do have the best key lime pie in SW Florida,and their blacken grouper, oyster basket were very good, the staff just put me off. Unorganized staff, wait times when there were empty tables, and boarder line rude. There are other places that serve good sea food! Proper manners are important. So glad we stopped at this rustic looking beach restaurant! Our server JoAnne was delightful and recommended the seafood chowder which was the BEST we ever had. Captain Con's is a very rustic, old-fashioned seafood restaurant. Don't go here if you are expecting tiny portions piled high on a sauce smeared plate, topped with orchids. Oilcloth tablecloths, big rolls of paper towels, and somewhat rickety chairs and tables will greet you. Service is usually brisk, and often the restaurant is crowded, but the welcome is warm and genuine. But the best....is the food. The Fish Fry has never disappointed in over 20 years. In fact, it is SO good, it is hard for me to convince myself to order anything else. I can say, though, that for the price, quality of food, and cheerful service I cannot think of a better place to have a wonderful meal coupled with a world-class water view of Pine Island Sound. After reading reviews I was doubtful but a local recommendation led us here. My husband had the recommended hamburger, and stated it was excellent, came with fries which were typical. I asked what type of broiled fish was offered, thinking since we were on the Gulf it would be something local - alas it was Swai - which is definitely not local. I settled for a spinach salad, with warm bacon dressing, topped with shrimp and fresh mushrooms. This was tasty and the shrimp were fresh. There could've bee a few less onions. The location is A1+++. They are in the midst of a little strip of beach, thatch hut with various water rentals, little art shop next door, and the Bokeelia fishing pier (hello dolphins!) right outside the door. Now for the food and drink. I'll start with the good. Drinking here is fun. I have been here 3 times now and it seems to be a local watering hole. The bartenders & staff are very accommodating & cheerful. Capt'n Con's makes 14 homemade pies per day. They make everything from Key Lime, Key Lime Chiffon, Peanut Butter Pie, Coconut Cream, Strawberry Rhubarb, etc., etc. It is my goal to try all of them! Yum! The entrees are just so-so. If you're a fan of fried food, you've come to the right place. You can get some good salads tho and there are a couple of broiled fish entrees, but fair warning--most everything here is breaded and fried. read more

I have eaten there twice. The first time I ate there was about a year and a half ago & I had their seafood chowder, it was delicious. The second time I ate here, was today and I ordered their meatloaf and mashed potatoes for lunch. The meatloaf was very bland and the mashed potatoes appeared to have been instant or frozen. Now the desserts are very good they have a multitude of pies. Today I had their cheese cake and it was good. The restaurant's view is very beautiful and impressive. I stayed in Bokeelia for three months this summer. Every Friday and Saturday I would head up to Capt. Cons for dinner and Karaokee. Whenever I would walk in the owner and her family who helps run it would always greet me with a smile and ask how I am doing. Luretta(sp) the owner is the real gem of this place. She makes it feel like home even if you are just visiting. She is actually quite the looker as well. From what I can tell, when she is there it runs tip top and so does the food. The decor could definitely use an update but it is a fish house in what could best be described as a fairly undisturbed small fishing community. If you go out to dine for an experience that is not based on decor then this place is for you. By the way you would be hard pressed to find a local gathering with better Karaokee singers. While I can say this is not a fine dining establishment, it is a fun and family friendly place to enjoy a Friday or Saturday night out. read more

Save your money. The only thing this place has going for it is the location. And even that is questionable when there is next to no outdoor seating. The inside of this place at first glance wouldn't put you off. Don't look too close. The first turn off was trying to find the entrance. We weren't the only folks who walked through two other doors before finding the correct area. The BIGGEST turn off was the image the staff projected. I am sorry but waitstaff (I am really not trying to be insensitive but very large folks as well) and cooks walking through in unkempt clothes and hair straggling down their faces (3 of them) and the older lady training a newbie as we watched them arguing how to upcharge the daily specials as posted on the board was just a complete eeeew. Our waitress apologized for the glove on her hand and fish smell as she "was busy in the back today too". ALMOST got up and left. Place is super expensive for the quality of food. Any Florida restaurant at $$ should NOT have Swai on the menu. At all. Period. After reading some reviews at the table, went ahead with the seafood soup which was very tasty until we found uncleaned shrimp (read: intestinal track strings) throughout. Also fried flounder lunch "special" which was obviously pre-breaded and frozen fish. Urrgh. Don't eat here. We waited two days to see if food poisoning followed us---SORRY Capt'n but this was the vibe from start to finish. Will not patronize this place again. Truly believe the only reason they're still open is there is absolutely no where else to eat for miles and once you get there you think "might as well try it". Don't! Head back to Matlacha or St James City side of Pine Island. read more

The other 2 servers were miserable and acted like we were putting them out when we asked them for silverware and where we pay the bill at. I gave this place one star only because our server smiled. I came upon this restaurant after following a road to see where it lead, so before I went I read some of the reviews and like most some favorable some not. I was with friends visiting the area and wanting to take them to this hideaway that I had found. When we got there, there was hardly anyone there which we found odd for a Saturday evening. The waitress told us to sit any where we wanted. I had read all the rave reviews about the chowder so of course we order some, other couple ordered the fried mushrooms. The chowder was very good as was the fried mushrooms. We all ordered the Captains platter which is where the disappointment came, it all tasted like it was from a frozen box. Worst meal I have had in many years. Badly overcooked dried-out fish in breading served with french fry pieces (none over an inch long) apparently cooked some time previously (last week?) and re-fried (repeatedly?) until hardened to a fine diamond-like texture. If I had to guess whether I was served animal, vegetable, or mineral, I would have chosen mineral. Nothing carbon-based in that basket! This was the worst restaurant we've tried so far in Southwest Florida. The fish was a flavorless frozen, battered slab delivered over-cooked in what tasted like old cooking oil. The handmade sauce for the coconut shrimp tasted like watered down apricot jam. The restaurant is full of kitschy decorations and looks like it's full of dust. Wandered out to Bokeelia Sunday to see Pine Island and have lunch. We found Capt'n Cons. Look up "fish shack" and your likely to see a picture of this place. A little intimidating from the outside. Not a lot of other options - this is Bokeelia after all. We ventured forth. Through the gift shop (more like a closet). Through the bar (more like a hallway). Through another room adjacent to the bar (not at all sure what that was used for - maybe overflow seating on New Years). Down a few steps and into the main dining room (more like an air conditioned lean-to with a woven bamboo ceiling). We grabbed a table. Yikes. Well, looks can be very deceiving. Had a fabulous lunch. Probably the BEST Grouper I've ever had. Seafood chowder was excellent as was the Shrimp basket. We ended with some superb homemade pie. The food was really delicious and service was sturdy. I'd give the Capt'n a fifth star if they could open up the view a bit from the main dining room. They're 30' from the water! What you could see, out of the tiny windows, was stunning. Horrible! First the good: Cold beer and a great location! Now the bad: 3 tables were seated after we received our drinks and had ordered. All 3 tables were served before us. Our food finally showed up and was delivered by the inside waitress. Obviously she must have seen it sitting under a heating lap for a while: Flounder and Shrimp Platter was gross. Flounder must have been previously frozen as it was pasty tasting, shrimp were overcooked and chewy and the rice pilaf was a different color on the top than in the middle. The other meal was a cheeseburger, or actually a better description was a hockey puck burger. How hard is it to cook a burger?. Also if you like the taste of grease, this should be your choice! French fries were like a bag from the frozen food section of the supermarket and were luke warm when served. Our server knew what they put in front of use was not good as she took 10% off without us saying anything. We would have been better off enjoying the view and leaving to eat somewhere else. My family has visited this restaurant for over 10 years. Today's visit was very disappointing. The usual fish basket which in the past was grouper or cod, now is swai (FYI-a cheaper kin to catfish). Our major complaint was the excess breading! The onion rings also were drenched and fried in the thick breading. It's sad to lose a place we looked forward to visiting every year. Ice cld beer and great view. But eat before going. The steamed shrimp are bland. The house fish is swai, which is a southeast asian catfish that is farmed in cesspools. The crablegs were spoiled. This is more regrettable since you are looking at a bay with lots of fresh, local fish. I dine at this restaurant regularly for their delicious seafood chowder, homemade pies and fried fish dinner. They do not add spices to many of their menu items as a majority of their customers are of the older generation ( I happen to be one). Service is always polite and quick. They only have a hostess available in the height of season, which I find to be understandable for a mom and pop restaurant. 8 months out of the year it is a seat yourself deal...I always enjoy picking my own table next to one of their many windows. Views of the harbor are spectacular and sunsets are always pleasurable. I have noticed the owner of the property posted limited parking signs...I have been informed from the business owner that the signs serve no purpose and to disregard them. If you or your family are looking to enjoy a delightful meal in a rustic island setting, I highly recommend you come to Capt'n Con's. read more
