The Sanibel Grill is a sports bar through and through. It has lots of random sports memorabilia and fun Sanibel-related license plates all over. There's numerous tv screens to watch all the games - some booths even have their own screen. Aside from the sports decor, The Sanibel Grill has a very similar menu to Timbers Restaurant next door - I'm pretty sure the two are one and the same and share the same kitchen. I ordered the Grouper Fish tacos. You can get them blackened, fried, or grilled. I opted for fried. Note that the Sanibel Grill is known for their signature cornflake crunchy batter - but the grouper fish tacos are the lightly breaded bites and not cooked in their signature batter. The grouper was nicely cooked - tender and delicate bites. They used corn tortillas, which didn't fall to pieces while eating, but they were pretty flimsy (it was easy for a grouper bite to roll out). The tacos are served with rice pilaf topped with black beans which was on the bland side (nothing to write home about). I would've liked a hit of lime to add to my tacos, but the waitress never came back to check on us. Service is minimal. This is bar service all around. My friend ordered the combo basket (Grouper and fried shrimp) and comes with a side of fries and cole slaw. You can hear the crunch - I can see why it's their signature. My sister ordered the shrimp scampi with rice pilaf (she was hoping for pasta but that was not a side option - it's either rice pilaf or potatoes - smashed, French fried, or sweet potato fries). It also came with fresh green beans. The shrimp were nicely cooked and super buttery. She also ordered the crab bisque which was creamy and had good crab flavor, but I wouldn't say it was overloaded with crab meat. We finished the meal with a slice of Florida's signature key lime pie. The slice was small but had giant key lime flavor. It was very sweet but this was my favorite key lime pie slice from our whole trip. The Sanibel Grill gave us average food and average service. Heard lots about this sports bar. The shrimp in my scampi were mushy and inedible. I told the hostess when she cleared the plate with 4 of 6 pieces still on it. No acknowledgement, no adjustment to the bill. Daughter's crab bisque and grouper fingers were good according to her. Grandson's chicken tenders were not. My girl friends and I spent the day at Bowman's Beach on Sunday and were starving when we came off the beach. We found The Sanibel Grill on Yelp and gave it a shot. Best decision ever! The atmosphere was so fantastic and we loved looking at all the pics. Our waitress was the absolute best. We think her name was Kelly. We got calamari and Shiahito peppers. They were so amazing. We know hurricane Ian about 2 years ago took a toll on Sanibel island so we weren't sure what to expect when we went to go visit. Although a lot of places still need major repair, there are some that are in business and ready to welcome people back! When we walked in to Sanibel Grill - we were so pleasantly surprised. It was busy! However, we were able to get a seat right away. This place has a sports bar vibe but was relaxed and comfortable. It was a little noisy but we could still have a conversation! They had plenty of food options to choose from and I had an incredible shrimp quesadilla along with a Shirley temple! Both things were amazing!!!!! The customer service was also phenomenal! This is connected to the Timbers and the Fish Market. It's a sports bar with many TVs and loads of interesting decor. The hostess and her 4-legged assistant lets you know it's a special place the moment you walk in. The menu has a variety of options and they have a full bar. Don't get us wrong. We love all of this owners restaurants. But on this outing, the place was very crowded (football games) and super busy. I ordered a fried grouper basket. The fish might've been fresh, but tasted very much off and I suspected this was from oil that had not been changed. I doubt very much that the fish was off itself. If I had not been with a group of people, I would've sent it back. This was a one off at the restaurants of this group. I hope the message gets back to the food preparers about the importance of changing the oil when there is a lot of turnover. Great cozy location to grab dinner with friends or family. We hadn't been in a few years and stopped in on vacation with my parents, as this is one of their favorites. Great variety of options in a comfortable and casual environment. A couple of us had the fried shrimp, which were great. My boyfriend had the steak which was a great portion size and cooked perfectly! My stepdad had some chowder an appetizer and enjoyed his as well. It just wasn't good. The staff was very friendly, it's a lively spot/environment, but it, like so many others, has become what I describe as "Sanibel Food." It might have some good elements, but overall the whole dish is off. In my case, the Crunchy Grouper was as flat as a shoe sole and so dry I was calling for refills throughout the meal. The fries were just okay, the clam chowder had virtually no clam to speak of and what was in there was only tiny pieces. The other two adults in my party had similar experiences with their dishes. Been here several times over the last 45 years. New England clam chowder is excellent. Last night the crunchy grouper and shrimp dishes were marginal. Thin pieces and over breaded. Fries were cold. Rice and beans had no flavor. After food was delivered, we had zero service to refill drinks, etc. On side note, their more "fine dining" sister restaurant Timbers next door uses the same kitchen. I've been coming to the island and eating at the Sanibel Grill for over 5 years. Unfortunately, I was very saddened by the racism I felt during my recent visit. Other groups of people who came after me were seated before my family and when we asked the host he said they had called ahead - the people from the other group had not even given the host a name or said anything about calling ahead - big fat lie!!! Needless to say we left! We are Hispanics, but born and raised in the US. Very sad to have this happen in Sanibel. This place is extremely racist. My family and I who are Hispanic (party of 5) arrived and waited to be seated and were told 10-15 minutes. Two other families that arrived after us (party of 6 and party of 4) who were told 20-30 minutes were seated before us. My dad asked the host why they were seated before us and the man lied saying they had called ahead. Even the family that was called was extremely surprised that they were seated before us. Was lucky that Matt and his employees decided to open for one day in anticipation of being open full-time starting on Wednesday the 30th. Count on it. The service was as usual great, it was great to see Everyone at the grill, Matt included, and Sanibel is slowly returning to some semblance of normal. It will be a long haul, but with owners like Matt and the employees at work at the grill opening things up, it has begun. Came out thinking it was off-season only to see the place packed for the Kentucky Derby. Let me tell you, even crushed, the staff was on top of its game. From the hostess to our server LEXI to the food runners, what an awesome experience. Brought visitors from Cleveland and they were blown away. This is such a great place. From atmosphere to food, this is a spot you can roll up to for a great meal in a laid-back setting. We shared the Caesar salad, one of the best, and then the fish dip. They continue to serve my favorite soup in the world, the Manhattan Clam Chowder. For that I would give it a 5 since I don't eat many other things on the menu. I am lactose intolerant so I don't get to eat many soups. This is delicious; I have ordered three bowls for my dinner at times. It's usually my first stop on the island. They have nightly specials that change and other daily menus. They have Sushi and Sashimi specials as well. There is something for everyone here. My mom loves the platter combos. My husband loves the New England Clam Chowder. More recently I ordered the Jerk Chicken daily special, some bites were quite salty while others lacked that spice that you're looking for. I like the idea, unfortunately the execution was at 85%. But this isn't stopping me from returning. The oyster bar is great! Always have a variety and you don't end up eating a lot of shell pieces once they are shucked. One night we had the Oyster Flight and the next we had the Oyster Sampler. Great happy hour specials from 4-6 M-F, domestic beers for $2.50 and house wines for $5. Don't mind if I do. Great service, many TVs for sports (they even have booths with your own small tv on the wall), everyone is wearing masks except when you are at your table. If you are dining outside and not from the area, watch out for the No See-Ums, the size of a fleck of pepper with the bite of a hungry mosquito. As far as sports bars go this one is high ion my list. The food rises above sports bar fare. The crunchy grouper is the best in town and so is the price. The beer is cold and service is great. There are tons of tvs and sports to Paraphernalia to check out. The final point is this is where locals hang out. Last year Randy wayne white who writes the doc ford novels and lives in sanibel was here. One year later I'm back again and I must say for the first time in 30 years of coming here we came on sushi night. The sashimi platter is flat out the freshest I have ever tasted. There were plentiful amounts of 4 different fish all l tasted like they just came out of the water. It was served with a very nice seaweed salad. All for $22 which is a pretty good deal. read more

Holy smokes those were the best fried shrimp we had on the island the whole week. Seriously.
