As a San Francisco resident, I try to stay away from touristy places (as do most of the reviewers here), but when my mom and grandma came to town, demanding Ghirardelli ice cream sundaes and clam chowder, I had no choice but to wine and dine them around Pier 39. I made a reservation through Open Table, and it was super easy peasy. We called a few hours ahead to add one person to the party, and they said it could be done. After freezing our butts off while eating ice cream sundaes, we decided that it was much too cold to walk around the area while waiting for dinner, so we headed to the restaurant about an hour early. They gave us a seat right away (it was still early, around 6) and it was a warm, cozy atmosphere. Right at the entrance is a bass player and a piano, so there was live music through the night. It's cutely decorated, with the typical nautical seafood theme. It's not that touristy, considering it's on the edge of the piers. The food was delicious and fresh. I ordered the all-clam Cioppino, which came in a huge sourdough bread bowl. Holy moly, I'd never seen so many clams shoved into a bread bowl before. Best of all, the clams were very fresh and very plump, and the broth was wonderfully seasoned. It's pretty much a seafood-and-carb-lover's dream. My mother and grandmother ordered clam chowder, which they really liked (mission: completed), but my mother wasn't too fond of her clam pasta, which was in a too-thick white cream sauce. Too bad we didn't have room for dessert, because they had some pretty yummylicious-sounding sweets, like tiramisu and chocolate creme brulee. My boyfriend and I finally decided to eat here one night after walking up and down the street drooling over all the menus. How in the world are you supposed to decide on where to eat when there are so many choices?!! Anyway, I'm glad we came here, the ambiance was perfect for such a long day in the city. My boyfriend had the white clam chowder and the skirt steak. The clam chowder (7$) was good and I'm usually not a fan, it had chunks of clams and lots of other yummy goodness inside. His steak (22$) was made perfect to order and served with a side of mashed potatoes and vegetables. The steak was melt in your mouth buttery goodness and so were the mashed potatoes. YUM! I had the crab sandwich (15$) which came with a side of fries. I don't regret it one bit! It was hands down the best crab sandwich I've ever had. It was loaded with crab meat mixed with little bits of celery and mayo served on a warm, soft, lightly toasted roll. Like a little party in my mouth. It was even good the next day. Came here for dinner back in May when my fiance's cousin and girlfriend was in town. Not sure who picked the place for dinner but as soon as we got to the restaurant, my tourist alarm warning went off. We checked out their menu and of course you can find pretty much everything on the menu that other restaurants serve on the wharf: some kind of seafood platter, cioppinos, fish entrees, crab sandwiches, crab dishes, chowder and oysters just to name a few. I ordered their dungeness crab sandwich with fries and slaw. There was nothing dungeness about my sandwich. They really skipped out on the crab and the bread used was cold and stale. The slaw was utterly disgusting however the fries is what saved my meal from docking another star.Maybe I should have just stuck with the chowder. read more

My reservation for Capurro's Restaurant was for 8:00 pm on a Thursday night and this place was about 2/3 full. Not too bad for a cold January night. . I know the restaurant sits in one of the most touristy parts of the city, but from my observation, it looked as if a lot of locals were dining there. All around me I saw the waiters and customers acknowledge each other by name. Tip...After 7:30 pm street parking is free so I parked behind the Argonaut Hotel and walked over to the restaurant. As for the food, oh yum, the crab was cooked to perfection. Also loved the little pot de creme dessert with the two biscotti. The Service was excellent. Everyone I came into contact with, that worked at Capurro's; were very knowledgeable, warm, and friendly. I noticed, aside from the crab, lots of pizza being ordered. Avoid. We stopped because we got tired of looking at restaurant after restaurant. It's a little like impulse shopping, go with a list and a plan or Capurro's will happen to you. Started with the Clam Chowder. It was all cream and potato. No extra flavour, no complexity to the soup. It was just salty cream with potatoes and a few pieces of overcooked clams. Cesar salad with shrimp. This wasn't bad. We ordered the large shrimp and there were about 5 that came with the salad. It was nicely dressed and quite lemony, which I liked. Mussel pizza. Ok, first, the mussels are on the shells and kind of thrown on the pizza, so you have to deshell them. The crust was the best part. Was given a groupon to try this place and i walked out happy. I will say first the service here is amazing. I was checked on a number a times and water filled and bread out without finding staff to bring more ooo what lovely staff so where the stars this place was given most likely comes from the food. Pasta bland no flavor but the tomato, roasted crab came out broken down and stacked with the pieces that I expected getting one crab (great I didn't get all legs like some other customers) the butter wine sauce for me was a whatever I simply just like herbs and butter on my crab so they could have kept it. I love crab so I wasn't going to waste it. The butterscotch pudding first few bites were heavenly until I got to the bottom and the lovely sweet and salty taste ending up more salty at the end. Good ending to the meal though. The greeter was wearing biker/ street thug attire and I asked him do they let him greet with such clothing and he said yes. I guess. They should change that because everyone else is dress like it's a 5 star place. He also showed a couple to their table in a tight leather jacket and jeans like really?? Eaten here twice, both times with friends visiting from out of town. Capurro's is very touristy. They are open for both lunch and dinner and the restaurant is spacious - they were easily able to take our walk-in party of six on a Saturday night. Pluses: service is good; attentive and friendly; endless supply of fresh sourdough; and just the right amount of checking in. In terms of food, they have fresh crab with big portions and tasty fish and chips with also good portions. Cons: prices are steep depending on what you order. For example, $19 for a cold seafood platter that comes with two oysters, two small crab legs, and two clams is much. Also, the baked seabass was overcooked (read: dry), $28 entree gone to waste and lobster ravioli was not worthwhile (filling was tasty, but there was so much oil in the bowl that it was hard to eat). This is not a place I would recommend coming out of your way to try, but some menu items make it a good restaurant choice when you are in the area and in need of a meal. read more

Went to Capurro's once on a Groupon. Was unimpressed - definitely not a $100 dinner. Somehow got the feeling that they were cutting corners at every turn. The meal was a bit skimpy on the bread, soup, and dessert. Even the bathroom was skimpy on the water pressure! Everything was tasty though - especially soup, which was not overly salted. The Dungeness was a bit raw despite the butter sauce. My wife ordered a blueberry martini which was understandably gimmicky but way too chunky. We got the steamed and oven roasted crabs. Both crabs were dehydrated and shriveled (signs that it's been frozen for a long time and recently thawed), nasty looking. We must have threw away half of it. The pasta looked like something that came out of a can. I think they give the customers with the Groupon the lousy crabs and save the fresh ones for the ones that pay full price. Made a reservation for 14 people and they were flexible when I had an extra person the day of. Atmosphere/Decor: Fishing theme all over. The bar has this saloon feel to it, it even has a piano next to the swinging doors that lead to the restaurants. You'll see fishing nets, wooden chairs, plenty of plastic fishes on the wall. Slightly dim lighted. Crowd: You get an older crowd here, probably around their 30s+. There's also groups of tourist, given that it's in fisherman's wharf. Service: Our waitress was great, she was friendly, attentive, and very patient with us. She made little jokes here and there, she made sure we were comfortable and enjoyed our dinner. Food: They start you off with bread, a bit disappointed that it doesn't come with any dipping sauce other than the bottle of olive oil that's sitting at the table. The bread was also not fresh out of the oven, I've definitely had better else where. For entrees, I ordered the Crab w/ Fresh Pasta. I liked it! It has a light white cream sauce topped with Dungeoness Crab. Mixed with cherry tomatoes and corn, it was quite excellent. Not too heavy and not too light. Our large table also ordered the whole crab, the steamed mussels,clam chowder, the spinaish ravioli with grounded beef, seabass, crab sandwich, and their famous ciopinnos. Everyone seemed to have enjoyed their food, except there was a complaint that the chowder was too salty, but I liked my dish the most. Total rip-off!! It took over half an hour to serve the woodstone-roasted in a white-wine garlic sauce. We had to ask to check on our orders as well. My plate only consists of few legs and 1 claw, half a body. More like splitting an order of 1 crab, wasn't what it advertise "Two whole Dungeness crabs"....liar!!! It included soup, salad, or a side of pasta, I chose to try the "red" clam chowder. Never tried red, but it tasted more like veggie soup instead, not much clam. Its even more tastier to open a can of clam chowder instead. Appetizers: Fried Calamari. It was def fried...it was so dark!!! More like burnt calamari, and quite small. Mini calamaris. No sauce came with it, only a small lemon.. One dessert (a $7 value): A small glass cup Butterscotch. It was so sweet that can cause you cavities after eating the whole thing in 10 minutes. Capurros is on the edge of FW, but don't let that stop any locals from giving them a try. We've been here a handful of times for lunch and dinner, and have been satisfied each time. The service is attentive and on our most recent visit Ana went out of her way to give us everything we needed. I'd recommend getting the grilled sand dabs with Israeli cous cous. The fish (which can be substituted for a variety of other types) is lightly breaded and broiled with white wine and capers....hecka good! My wifey ordered the whole crab (I helped her of course:). This is a pretty simple dish as you can imagine. They crack and clean the crab for you, and sever it with a warm garlic butter sauce. They rolled out the bibs, wetnaps, shell crackers, and the whole bit. We also had the mixed green side salad with the champagne vinaigrette to share. Overall, we like this place and will probably continue to come back when we're in the area. I'd give out five stars, but I'd like to see them go a bit further with their menu options, e.g., offer more organic, vegetarian, vegan, and humanely raised/grass fed meat options as well. It wouldn't hurt to have a little bit of support for local growers, i.e., sourcing their products locally, especially since the restaurant caters to a lot of tourists. This is an opportunity to showcase NorCal agriculture and food as well as rationalize what to many can seem like higher than market menu pricing. read more

I purchased the dinner for two groupon for 45 (i believe). One of the requirements is you must make reservations. The dinner for two costs 79.99 which isnt bad, considering it comes with a 2 crabs, choice of side (soup, salad, or pasta) and dessert. We went on a saturday for me and my bf's 8 year anniversary and we wanted to do something nice. Our reservations was at 1 and to our surprise we found parking straight away. We did get there early so we walked around the pier to build up our appetite. As i mentioned, the meal comes with your choice of side, and i selected the pasta. Not impressed. I had to add salt and pepper which i almost never do. Next came the crab... You have a choice of cold or garlic roasted. My bf and i decided on the garlic roasted. When it came out, it looked really good, but was let down when we found some pieces were overcooked and could pass for crab jerky. The sauce it was prepared in was this garlicky soup based goodness! It was the star! Next came the pre-selected dessert. They dont tell you what kind of dessert you get, so i was kind of excited to see what was coming. What came out was this very rich pudding like dessert that was served in a miniature mason jar, with a biscotti. It was ok for me. So on to the service. It could use some improvement. It is old Italian and has comfortable booths and an old big mahogany bar. The service is good but we don't go during peak dinner times. We think you will enjoy the food. We were seated pretty quickly. Bread and water came out pretty quick and our server seemed nice.. we just didn't get our requested drinks or food for quite a while. Interestingly enough, we saw our food come out once.. But it was delivered to the wrong table. It was at least another 15 minutes before it came back out to us. There was a definite breakdown in communication amongst the staff and our service suffered for that. The food wasn't even that great. Also, don't sit outdoors if the owner or hostess is there. Her constant heckling of patrons into dining at the restaurant is more annoying to the guests who are already seated. This is my second time here. Both times it was cashing in on a Groupon good for two dinners for crab. The first time I guess we must have enjoyed ourselves, but last night I really didn't enjoy myself all that much. The broth of my crab was terrible. I would have liked a garlic, butter, wine with my crab. And crab was cold. My husband had a lot more crab than I, even he was shocked how little they gave me. I think next time I'd rather go to PPQ. My dad is a masochist. He wanted to not only go to the Fisherman's Wharf on a chilly day, he wanted to sit outside and linger over his lunch. Brr! We ended up sitting down to eat here because their outdoors section was positioned in a way that the cold gusts of wind mostly missed us. Other than the weather, we had a pleasant time eating here. We all had soup, and it, as well as the bread the served with it, was tasty and the perfect antidote to the weather. The meal was very affordable compared to other places in this part of San Francisco. Service was A-OK, and at the end when my dad asked if he could buy some of their delicious sourdough bread, they directed him down the street to Bourdin. Came her a couple days ago for a Groupon funded date. It was the middle of the week so parking was easy and the restaurant was pretty empty, the 3-4 other couples there were also on Groupon dates. -Staff was nice -Restaurant clean -Coctails were a-ight -Got the Woodstone crab and chilled crab....Woodstone was recommended by waiter and he was right -Butterscotch dessert was a-ight as well Overall good experience. I want to start out by saying this was the first time we had eaten at this restaurant which is located on Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. The staff where very nice and the restaurant was nice and clean. The wait staff and the table cleaning staff where friendly and on top of everything. My friend ordered the crab sandwich ($14.95), which came with clam chowder and coleslaw. All of which I was told was very good. Now, on the other hand, the fish and chips ($18.95) where terrible. They where by far I have ever eaten. I spent three years in England so I know excellent fish and chips. The beer batter on the fish after being deep fried was oily and so thin it looked like skin on the inside. It also tasted burnt. When I asked our waiter how often they changed the oil in their friers and I was told no more than two days. This to me explained the poor and burnt taste of the fish. My sister and I had lunch here during our first day in San Fran. We stayed at the Hilton on the Wharf, so it was a short walk from our hotel. We were starving from not having eaten since early breakfast, so am not sure if my opinion of Capurro's is 100% accurate, as hunger can bias things. PROS: 1. SERVICE. We were seated right away and the hostess and wait staff were super friendly. Food came out fast. Water was refilled a lot. 2. LOCATION. Right on the water. Nuff said. 3. FOOD. Pretty good, but not OMG amazing. We shared the clam alfredo and chicken artichoke pizza. Neither wowed me. The alfredo was lukewarm and the sauce was kind of bland. Then again, I've never been a huge fan of alfredo. The pizza was a little more flavorful, but the crust was kind of soggy. CONS: 1. As I said, the food was alright. But not worth the prices. Also, they didn't have wheat anything. I asked if they could sub wheat for either or both (for white pasta and white pizza dough) entrees. And, there weren't really any veggie options. Also, they won't validate the $35 parking cost at the lot across Pier 39, so make necessary preparations. The fettuccine noodles were nice and cooked al dente - very nice. Lots of clams, mussels, and crab. The bread was awesome, the tomato sauce was good - but I've had better. Fries - yeah, i know, were fantastic. The ambiance was very nice. On the pier, lots of windows, bright, new, woody, all with a scenic view of the kitchen - i love that! The service was great - attentive, smiling, and very patient. There is a bar in the front, if you just want to pop in for a drink or waiting for your table. The food was OK all around - I'd come again if i was in the area and needed to check in to a kid-friendly, chill, and spacious venue. Again, the free parking is a plus considering they tax you with a vengeance at the lots. Oh, one thing I did notice is that they have passed on the SF Healthcare tax to their patrons.
