My guests were very kind and understanding of my desires to sample everything at the table, so I was able to try every dish. The scaloppini was perfectly cooked. It was tender, flavorful, and balanced. I was also impressed with the spaghetti alla carbonara. The emulsification of the eggs, cheese, and pasta water was on point and gave the dish a silky texture while still tasting bright and rich. When I got to the pappardelle and the amatriciana (my dish), the only two red sauce dishes at the table, both tasted oddly lifeless and dry, despite the quality of the ingredients and the restaurant itself. I was surprised. My guess was that the noodles may have absorbed too much moisture while sitting, or perhaps the pasta wasn't finished with enough pasta water. Another possibility was that the fat from the proteins in the sauces was separated instead of properly emulsifying into the sauce. When that happens, pasta can taste dry or slightly chalky. Luckily, during an earlier conversation, our server had brought over a bottle of extra virgin olive oil. I added a small amount to refresh the noodles, and the transformation was immediate. The oil coated the pasta, restoring a silky texture and helping carry the flavors across the palate. The olive oil softened the sharper acidic edges of the tomato sauce while helping the savory notes bloom and linger longer. More importantly, it helped reunify the sauce and pasta so the dishes tasted cohesive again. The added fat essentially restored the emulsion and dramatically improved both plates. It was magical. In that moment, I understood why this was the Winner of 2009 Boss of the Sauce award. It deserved it and it still deserves it. When we arrived, we sat inside at the bar, and I'm glad we did. The man behind the bar elevated the experience from something that could have been average restaurant experience into something more memorable. Though he was clearly busy and not hovering over us, sitting at the bar gave us direct access to him. If we needed something, we'd simply ask. But what made the experience special wasn't attentive service in the traditional sense, it was more the genuine humanity of it. I truly felt like a guest who was hanging-out in a friend's kitchen during a party while he casually hosted around me. I could talk with him naturally while he worked. There was no script, no performative upselling, just authentic hospitality and a genuine care for the cuisine and us. He turned me on to dishes simply by being a good host. That kind of atmosphere feels like an insider experience, both literally inside the restaurant and socially inside the circle of the people creating the experience. Those conversations with the staff probably don't happen at a patio table. Don't get me wrong, the patio has its own energy and purpose. Outside feels more like a lively beer garden with music, groups sitting at picnic tables, and heaters. But inside at the bar felt personal. I'm already planning to go back to sit at the bar for a cappuccino and tiramisu. On a side note: A couple of other dishes that caught my attention as those came out of the kitchen were the cheese pizza and the osso buco. read more

Girls day in the city brought us here. Upon arriving we noticed they were really busy but despite that we were seated fairly quickly. We started with the caprese -- fresh mozzarella, ripe tomatoes, and good olive oil. Simple and well done. The prosciutto crostini was salty, crunchy, and a great starter. For mains, one got the linguine con le vongole, she enjoyed it and felt it was flavorful and balanced, with plenty of clams and a light, garlicky sauce that didn't overpower the pasta. Another had braised beef with pasta and it was rich and comforting, clearly slow-cooked. The lasagna di carne was classic, cheesy, and filling, and the calamari was light, crispy, and not overly greasy. Service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere felt very North Beach as always, lively, casual, and familiar. Not every dish was a showstopper, but everything was solid and satisfying. It was past the lunch rush and when we entered, the staff waived their hand at us to hold on while the 2 of them served a table their soups. We told the staff we are a group of 3 and they told us we had to sit outside. I asked about the available tables inside and they said "no it's only for 6." I asked if we could sit at the bar or use the table of 2 and pull up an extra chair, they said "no" then told us to go outside. With that, I said "we'll eat somewhere else." After strolling through the North Beach festival, ended up here with the kids for lunch. Checked out the menu that they had out front and was asked by the wait staff if they could help us. Awkwardly asked for a table of 3. Asked to sit inside and was led to a table. Menus handed to us and took our drink orders. Inside the menu was a hand written menu of their specials but not their daily specials. Another patron came in and was recited the daily specials by the wait staff without asking. We ordered the fried calamari and the mussels in white wine sauce. Entrees that we ordered to share were the Pappardelle Pellegrini and the lobster ravioli. Fried calamari and shrimp, huge order, it was good but nothing outstanding. Just your usual fried calamari. The mussels in white wine sauce were super tasty and that broth was so good. It had a nice lemony finish to it, and I just wanted to slurp that broth up. The pasta came out after the appetizers. The pappardelle with beef were good but the star was the lobster ravioli. My friend and I stopped by this place while walking around San Francisco before our piano experience together. It was my first time attending a live piano concert! All in all, we just wanted to have a glass of wine and some food, and she was curious to try the pizza here. The location is really nice, close to Washington Square Park, with a view of the church and beautiful buildings all around. We sat outside, and they had outdoor heaters (which was perfect since it was a bit chilly). That made the experience very comfortable and cozy. My wine was good, though I liked my friend's wine even more. The pizza was amazing: fresh, with a crunchy crust and great flavor. I honestly don't know why this place doesn't have more good reviews. Maybe it's because when you sit outside it feels a bit more self-service, even though they still bring the food to your table. That didn't bother us at all. There's also just one restroom for everyone, but again, it wasn't an issue for us. Overall, we really enjoyed the place. On our quest to find good happy hour spots we ran into Piazza pellegrini. Located at the corner or Columbus Ave and Filbert St. The restaurant has two parts. There's the main restaurant in which we chose not to try this time, we wanted a chill happy hour vibe for the evening. The second part is an open space area right next to the main restaurant. It's a chill, relaxed, area. You have the option to order quick bites for happy hour or something more formal from the main restaurant. Ordering was easy, as soon as you walk into their open patio area, there's a cable car from which all orders are taken. They provide you a table number and then you get to pick ur table. Large open patio area, with space heaters. They have a few TVs around the patio to keep track of sports. The service was quick and friendly . The food was good. We definitely loved the fish tacos! Those there amazing! We had to order a second round of tacos. I also liked the pizza, it was a think crust margarita pizza with good flavor. The ambiance is what really loved. A very chill, private but still chilaxed vibe. The waiter turned on our space heater for us to enjoy being outside on a cold November day in the city. I've walked by this place hundreds of times, it's right next door to my favorite North Beach parking garage (street parking in North Beach is horrible), so I finally decided to stop by. I ordered the Porchetta Sandwich (4 Stars) with salad. The French roll and pork were awesome, but they put a pesto spread that was a little over powering. Not sure if was needed, some extra juice from the pork would have been better. They serve with Arugula which was strong and then added dill pickles, nacho style pickles jalapenos on the side, why? Alright, I'm leaning towards 3.5 for the food but round to 4 for service. The key need to know is that there's better Italian food out there and skip dessert. But if you want a casual place for great conversation and even have heaters for a meal outdoors, this is the spot. Shout out to the staff for accommodating our reservation to be outdoors last minute and for the server who was on top of all the plate changing, checking in, and conversation in between. Now for the food, the ok dishes we had were calamari and bolognese rigatoni. The crab arancini was unusually large and not as exciting as I would've expected for a special. Everyone liked the bruschetta with the mushroom having a nice truffle oil kick to it. Unfortunately, the dessert didn't meet expectations, like the tiramisu was just a sponge cake with strong coffee flavor. Went here last night for my mom's birthday and we were very happy with our experience. I got the Melanzane alla Parmigiana and that was excellent. The waiter was so nice and he even sang happy birthday in Italian to us (really well too!) and gave us tiramisu. Such a cute and cozy place for a night in. Do be aware it can be a bit cold as the front door may not be shut all the way, it has a tendency to blow open. Also, my sister got the tortellini that was labeled as spicy and she said it was not too spicy so that may be good to know. Overall, glad we came in! read more

When we asked him if we could move to the patio, which had plenty of seating, he refused, claiming most of it was full anyway. Later, Vincenzo approached us rudely while we were eating, interrupting to demand, "What is the matter?" I told him I was seeking the manager, and he boasted, "Yes, I'm the manager. I've been here for 20 years." I explained our earlier request for the patio, but he insisted that once seated at the bar, we couldn't relocate. I asked for the bill to pay and leave. When I requested boxes for our pizza and pasta, Vincenzo provided only a tiny box for the pizza, as they lacked proper pizza boxes. Overall, Vincenzo's service was dismissive, racist, and arrogant--far below what I'd expect for a $50-100 meal. 1 star. I wouldn't return even in a famine. read more

Let's start with the positives. The server was really very sweet with the two little girls (ages 6 and 8) at our table. He also didn't hesitate when I asked him to take our photo. And he was moderately patient with a group of 5 of us, including two senior citizens and two indecisive (albeit well-mannered) children, when taking our order. Nonetheless, I was soured overall by my lunchtime experience at Piazza Pellegrini for the following reasons: I arrived first, at 1:30 in the afternoon on a Friday. There was only one other couple in the inside of the restaurant, and they were finishing up. I told him my friend and her grandchildren were on their way and that we had a group of four. He sat me down and asked if I'd like a drink while I waited. I chirpily requested a diet coke with lime. He brought me a diet coke in about a 6 oz. glass that was mostly ice -- with lemon. Ok. Whatever. My friend finally arrived with her grandchildren ... and her husband. I jumped up to greet them at the door and turned to the server and said, "Oh, I guess we have five. Can we move to that table?" (The one right behind the original. Again, no one else in the place. And the only thing we had to move was my drink, which I did myself). He bristled and said, "You said it was four." Like he wanted to sue me for breach of contract. I let the attitude slide just as I had the mostly-ice drink with lemon, not lime. Ok, so then we get the kids' menus for the kids (a nice menu, really), and we all order. The pizza was good, but not great. Stiff competition for great pizza in North Beach, and we are not only all locals, but ITALIAN locals (going back generations). We know good pizza. We found that we had to get his attention for extra parmesan, etc. And the oil on the table turned out to be a spicy oil. That would have been good to know. Throughout our meal, he mostly just left us alone. Didn't rush us or anything. But also didn't seem to care about our experience: did we have everything we needed, how was everything. And it wasn't like he was overwhelmed with other customers. Eventually, the time came for me to ask for a box to take home my remaining pizza. I'd only eaten one piece of it, intending all along to bring most of it home to enjoy for dinner with my husband. And he brought me--not, not a pizza box--a small box one would scoop remaining pasta into. That was a real head-scratcher. I mean, this is an Italian restaurant with a pizza and pasta menu. You don't bring me a proper pizza box?? Did they not have pizza boxes?? I'm genuinely asking! But I was kinda done trying to politely deal with this guy (who was clearly not Italian, just saying), and I just piled the pizza slices on top of each other and squished my pizza into the little box, barely closing the top over it. By this time, I was irked. Finally, he brought the check to my friend's husband (the "nonno" / grandfather of the little girls), and my friend's husband paid. NOW HERE'S THE KICKER. READY? A few minutes later, he returned to our table and to my friend's husband saying (indicating toward me), "She ordered a soda before you arrived when she was sitting at the other table. She said there were only for of you. I forgot to charge for the soda. I need to charge you for that." SERIOUSLY?!? And that's the moment I decided I would not return. Really really poor judgment. This is the hospitality business. And the ITALIAN hospitality business, at that. You need to be a lot more hospitable than that. Do better. read more

Started with an aperol spritz and moved onto an espresso martini. Drinks were $14-$15, pretty standard for a cocktail in the city. Espresso martini came served in a normal water glass, which was surprising, but it tasted good and that's all the matters. I like that you order at the counter and they hand you plates, napkin rolls with cutlery, a carafe of water, cups, and you pick up all your condiments yourself. I like the casual vibe and not having to flag down a waiter and not having to figure out how to split the check with a friend. And it's totally chill to sit there for a couple hours reading a book, people watching, meeting up with friends. I wish more restaurants were like this. Fettuccine Bolognese was delicious.
