Fisherman's Wharf is known as a tourist area, but there is some good here. We went to Chowder Hut and had a great meal at a decent price. The inside is nice if nothing fancy. It is nice to eat inside when wind is heavy. Service is fast and efficient--they are used to dealing with crowds. We were here for World Cup and glad they had a couple of big TVs with games playing. We started with some Blue Moon drafts--only $5 and just perfect. We both ordered the clam chowder bowls and an order of garlic fries. The chowder was excellent and you cannot beat a good sourdough bowl. I added bacon which i HIGHLY recommend. The fries were a nice surprise, clearly fresh and with great flavor. We were both pleased. Perfect location. The Hispanic guy working taking orders was a bit rude. This is a tourist hotspot and you don't want the workers to seem like they don't want to be there. Casual eatery in the middle of San Francisco's most popular destinations, so location and views are great. There is a public parking lot and public restroom adjacent. Indoor seating and patio available. Watch out for birds! The house margaritas are worth stopping in for. Service is welcoming and attentive (and should be good because they tack on a $3-4 employee surcharge, that is not the tip). Most of the menu is the typical fried seafood (shrimp, calamari, fish), clam chowder in a sourdough bread bowl, and crab that's on every menu at San Francisco's seafood restaurants. Prices aren't bad, but the food was just mid, so I wouldn't mind paying more somewhere else for better tasting food and ambiance. But you know what was the best? The mf tarter sauce!!!!! That sh*t was delish! And the grilled sourdough bread for the crab salad sandwich. So crisp and buttery. Crab salad itself was ok. Clam chowder was served nice and hot and was the right consistency but lacked flavor. The bread bowl was good but cold. Still blows my mind that these restaurants serve cold sourdough bread! The fried shrimp was ok but on the smaller side and the fried cod (?) was the same. I checked the menu boards at all the places right on the wharf and these prices were pretty much the exact same for a bread bowl with clam chowder. The other items seemed similar but this place had burgers too, as well as other options. The lady who took my order was so nice. I wasn't sure on the crab or clam chowder so I asked what she thought was better and she let me sample both. I went with the crab. It was a little sweet but also had a little kick to it. The clam chowder was really good too. My husband got the fish and chips and he liked them. I didn't see any inside dining options but outside in this area is best anyways. read more

The restaurant is located at Pier 43 and the food was horrible to say the least based on the amount of money spent. This is a solid place in the fisherman's warf. We stopped here for a snack and some drinks between some attractions and really enjoyed it. There were several beers on tap and a full bar. The only (very small) complaint I have is that the bartender was also the server for the bar area, and he seemed a little overworked. He was super attentive, but it would have been better if he had some more help. He seemed to be having an issue with one of the mixers, and it was cool to see the attention he was paying to the quality of the drinks. We had a few beers and some of the garlic fries which were great. I do want to include one anecdote, the second bartender (the main guy got some help) was shaking a mix and splashed some of what he was making in our direction. Crab chowder was 90% sweet corn chowder with maybe 2 oz of crab meat in there in tiny shreds and bread bowl was super shallow that a cup would barely fit in there. The restaurant offers validation for parking, great spot to park if you want to walk down to Pier 39 and the wharf. Food was delicious and for a great price. I came in expecting a decent meal and some basic service, especially given that this place is located at Fisherman's Wharf--a busy, iconic tourist destination. The real issue is with management. There simply weren't enough employees working to handle the amount of people coming in. We were seated and completely forgotten. No one checked on us, no one asked how our food was, and believe it or not, we were never even brought water. That is basic, minimum service. The food? Extremely mid. Nothing had flavor, nothing stood out, and it wasn't worth the price or the wait. For a place in such a high-traffic, competitive area, the food should be at least memorable. It wasn't even close. My disappointment was that I didn't even get offered water. This is a great spot so they really should take advantage of it. Ironically the mustard was more flavorful than my sandwich.
