I thoroughly enjoyed my time at blue mermaid. I live in the neighborhood and often take visitors here for a quick eat. I've only had the burger and clam chowder. The burger was very yummy and cooked well. I've had it twice now and both times were good. The chips were also super good. The clam chowder did run very salty. Which was disappointing being so close to the water, but it happens. I do think there may be other places that are better in that department. Service was great and they were very attentive. The restaurant does sit behind a couple buildings so you don't get a lot of sunlight, especially during the cooler evenings. We were walking along Fisherman's Wharf and needed some sustenance, so we stopped into Blue Mermaid for some chowder. The space is attached to a hotel, but the interior has a modern, nautical decor to it! There are plenty of seating options for small to large parties. We took advantage of the shade on their patio and sat outside. They were a bit understaffed for the hour we were there, so it was a bit difficult to get the attention of the server staff, but they were friendly when they were around! We both ordered Bread Bowls of Clam Chowder, which was large, and delicious! The perfect warmth on the cool Spring day! The bread was chewy and just sour enough to be enjoyed! The restaurant has great seafaring decor and is right next to fisherman's wharf so the expectations are high. For breakfast the spinach goat cheese frittata was delicious and very well done. But I was a little disappointed that the fruit bowl was mostly cantaloupe. At dinner the chowder sampler was very delicious and filling with the best one definitely being the clam chowder. Stopped here for a quarter ck meal before heading out to a concert in downtown SF. The kid's meal fish and chips was surprisingly generous and really well done; crispy, light, and not greasy at all, which is always a win. The Crab Louis salad absolutely hit the spot. The vinaigrette had a nice zesty kick without overpowering the sweetness of the Dungeness crab, letting the freshness shine through. We also tried the New England chowder in a Boudon bread bowl. Decided to try this restaurant because we were staying at the hotel. The service was good. Our server was attentive, courteous, and our drinks never ran empty. Inside the restaurant was a little warm but nothing intolerable. When it comes to the food it I personally didn't have anything negative to say, but it also wasn't my favorite from the trip. I ordered the fish and chips and the fries were super crispy (the way I like) and the fish well the fish also was crispy but all the flavor seemed to be in batter. We (two adults, two kids) stayed at the Argonaut and ate breakfast here three mornings in a row because our hotel package included a daily dining credit. While the food we ordered was generally good, the menu was so limited that we were tired of it by the third day. My kid loved the French toast, and the coffee was decent, although it felt odd that the restaurant charges $6 for coffee when the hotel has a complimentary coffee station just outside. The biggest issue was the inconsistency. The kids' meals came with plain Greek yogurt, which seemed like a strange choice for young kids and ended up going to waste. We ordered the continental breakfast for our kids each morning. On the first day, when I asked what pastries were available, we were told "toast." The second day, it came with toast plus a cold croissant for some reason? The first server also told us kids' meals included a drink, but the next two days we weren't offered one until we asked. On our last morning, I asked if the pastry could be swapped for a bagel, and they happily accommodated the request, though the bagel was barely toasted and my kid wouldn't eat it. On the positive side, we were seated almost immediately every morning, food was served quickly, and two of our three servers were especially friendly. The third was polite. Kid menus with crayons are always appreciated. Would I have chosen to eat here without the hotel dining credit? Probably not. But the convenience of having a decent breakfast right inside the hotel was definitely a plus. read more

It's adjacent to the boutique hotel and has both indoor and outdoor options for dining. Service needs an improvement. Quicker with refills, side requests and bringing the check. We had to ask for drink refills about 4 times, and we were only there for less than 45 minutes. And they weren't busy. Clam chowder is where it's at. We had a family (2 parents, 1 college student) vacation stay at the Argonaut in late August 2025 and the adjacent Blue Mermaid was a welcomed option after our long day of cross-country travel for late lunch upon arrival in SF. Other than convenience, the plusses were friendly service and tasty dishes. We enjoyed some SF waterfront classics like Dungeness Crab Louis, Fish & Chips, and Crab & Corn Chowder, as well as a surprisingly authentic Indian butter chicken with a bone-in chicken quarter that was perfectly rendered and fall-off-the-bone tender. The negatives were a few, which was why we never ate there again during our week here. The location on Fisherman's Wharf means you get some annoying and LOUD competing music from across the street (alternating buskers using amplified streel drums, bad karaoke, and strangest of all, a pantomime of live 80s saxophone solos), so dining in the otherwise lovely courtyard was a no go. The prices are ridiculous compared to many other more pleasant places where you could try some of the same dishes. The booth was a bit grimy and did not live up to the menu price point. I'd say if you are staying on site and just don't have the energy to venture elsewhere or order takeout delivery from any of the 1000s of alternatives, then Blue Mermaid is alright. With a credit card rewards program like AMEX Fine Hotels, you can at least apply your daily credit to relieve some of the sticker shock. read more

I'm a little conflicted on how to rate the meal because the salad was great with fresh mixed greens and veggies, and the chicken sandwich was tasty with mint yogurt, tender pieces of spiced chicken on toasted sourdough. The reason I'm conflicted is while the sandwich was flavorful, the chicken was drowned in the yogurt sauce, and the sourdough was drenched in butter (and/or oil?) so much so that the sandwich was dripping sauce and butter. I ended up with 3 stars since I wouldn't order it again because the sandwich was just too heavy and oily. The first one wouldn't ignite; they tried a second also a no-go. We then asked about the nearby fire pit. They got it lit, but it faded out after a minute, like the propane tank had run out. Meanwhile we were still cold, and no one offered to move us closer to the only working fire pit, even though there were open tables right by it. Little details didn't help either utensils were dropped in the middle of the table instead of being set individually. Upon entering we were greeted by Very nice employee and waiter JAVIER G...what a delight-- from the onset Javier was very customer service oriented...such a sweet and pleasant demeanor. We asked for dessert options and he immediately showed us the choices. We picked KEY LIME PIE....AND COFFEE/ DONITA ordered a capuchino...within few minutes JAVIER brought our coffee and dessert....IT WAS FABULOUS! Very yummy and sooo delicious. What made our VISIT so extraordinary was the warm and friendly attitude that our server displayed...we could tell he has years of providing super great service. Location is amazing, by the beach. We were seated within a minute. Not too crowded or loud. Upper-scale bar vibes. Place was clean. We got fish and chips and the wagyu burger. Food was great. The fish was flaky in the inside and crispy on the outside and they had malt vinegar :) the burger was perfectly cooked, juicy and flavorful. Thanksgiving Buffet! That's what caught my eye, as there were 5 of us and having lots of choices, especially vegetable dishes, was perfect. The staff was welcoming and warm, and as we walked in, we could see all of the appetizers and desserts, and the mains as well. Comfortable seating, friendly attentive waiter. Drinks and chat and off we went. Raw seafood bar was the draw for me, shrimp, crab, clams, mussels, and all so delicious. The mushroom ragout was a knockout. Butter chicken! And so many great breads. My husband and I heard about this restaurant (in the Argonaut hotel) and its chef-Amod Singh-and decided to give it a try while visiting SF. As soon as we got there, we met the chef and asked him to go ahead and do a tasting menu for us...we were in his hands! He not only went above and beyond our expectations, he created several unique vegetarian and non-veg courses for both of us! The manager, Tony, was also so friendly and hospitable and did some wine pairings for us as well. This restaurant is nautical themed and looks fairly casual, but the food we ate here deserves a white tablecloth setting...! We started with an amazing amuse bouche with tuna tartare for me...the presentation was so beautiful, and the flavors were mind blowing!! Then we had a "flavor bomb" which is a small, crisp Indian puri filled with a delicious tamarind spiced water that explodes in your mouth. Next came a scallop curry for me and a veggie one for hubby...oh my goodness, the scallops melted in my mouth and the flavors were so rich. Next course was a lobster tail with hints of Indian flavors...again, just too good! As if we weren't full enough, the final dish was a twist on chicken biryani...and again, super flavorful and super moist chicken. I cannot begin to express how incredibly delicious ALL the courses were...and to top it off, the presentation of each course was masterful...truly a 5 Star dining experience! We were entirely too full but shared one dessert called Mango Variations...believe me when I tell you that it's nothing like anything you've had before! The mango flavor was subtle-not overpowering like many mongo desserts-and all the different elements of crispiness, mousse and gelato melded together so perfectly! We had to give Chef Singh a standing ovation at the end...it was the MOST amazing food experience we've ever had, and I am a HUGE foodie that's eaten at many restaurants across the globe! This chef deserves a Michelin star for sure! I wish we lived closer so I could eat here again, but I will definitely be planning another SF trip just to eat his food again. I don't have an aversion to Fisherman's Wharf. Just to the loud packs of tourists who roam the congested area. That's why eating at the bar of this hotel had a certain appeal. Most of the hotel guests were presumably out and about in the middle of the afternoon probably eating clam chowder out of a sourdough bread bowl at a wharf stand and getting an Instagram moment out of it. I had heard the hotel was nice from locals in need of a staycation. I saddled up to the nearly empty bar where the chief bartender was cleaning glasses. We did dinner with him twice, and he is a great reflection on your brand. The Dungeness crab and corn chowder served in a Boudin sourdough bowl. The touted crab and corn chowder was ok but nothing special. Limited crab, too much potatoes and overly seasoned. The fish & chips were bland and greasy. When the fries are better than the fish, it says something. The roasted chicken was dry and without much flavor. The Takes Two to Drink specialty was anything less than special. I want to shout out to the staff at the Hotel Argonaut and Blue Mermaid! This was my first time at the Blue Mermaid and I had friends with me, visiting from the north bay and we were looking for a nice place to sit down, have a drink and some bites, that was also dog friendly. My experience, as a local, has always been great with the hotel valet and staff and my dog. The local dogs know where the treats are at the hotel valet and this has always been a special destination for us as the valet team is exceptional on handing out treats and being very sweet with my senior tripawd. Today was raining so we needed to be inside and the Blue Mermaid was absolutely accommodating to us especially with my large dog, in a stroller. They even have a dog menu of food and treats!!! The last couple of days my dog hasn't felt great which contributed to him being a very picky eater. I was over the moon on the options and he was extremely excited with the wagu burger and steamed rice option. I was grateful he enjoyed the rice as much as the burger! Brian, in the bar/restaurant was fantastic and super accommodating to our needs and made sure my dog also had what he needed with water, food and verbal compliments. What a great experience!! We were excited to try The Blue Mermaid, but the experience was disappointing from start to finish. Upon arrival, we were given a hard time about wanting to sit outdoors. When I explained that I have a crab allergy and needed them to be careful about cross-contamination, the staff member was dismissive and seemed annoyed. He insisted "there's no crab in the eggs," completely missing the point--cross-contamination isn't just about ingredients, it's about clean pans, prep surfaces, and taking allergies seriously. If you have food allergies, I would not feel safe eating here. The service was incredibly slow, and our waitress only checked on us once during the entire meal. I was asked to choose a toast option, but when my food arrived, there was no toast. When I asked about it, another server said it didn't come with toast, but also didn't offer to let me order any at that point, which felt like poor service recovery. The food itself was underwhelming. The oatmeal was gloppy and unappetizing, it really left a lot to be desired.
