The PT/OT did not use our therapy sessions to the greatest extent that would've allowed me the best rehabilitation. The nursing staff was not cooperative on the dispensing of prescription medication for my Parkinson's that I have been receiving for years and said they called my Parkinson's doctor who they said also disagreed with me but my Parkinson's doctor said they never called her. All the nurses were very nice & friendly but unfortunately that alone did not help maximize my rehabilitation.

They appear to only like their residents who are compliant so do their best to make people that way. Up until the time my 89 year old father was admitted to the Cottages At Danny Kaye, he regularly walked about 2 miles per day. Once he entered this facility, he was never allowed to walk again. Initially, he was being sedated & locked into a geriatric chair, with a tray to keep him from trying to get up. I questioned this because he was always on his feet & walking around before moving here. Despite suffering from dementia for years, he had never lost his desire to keep his body moving. The staff claimed this was to prevent him from falling & they never made any effort to get him back up & moving. I requested physical therapy but the only response I got to those requests were that they weren't sure if he could follow a therapists instructions so they weren't even going to try. Because he was never able to get out of the chair or his bed, he developed quite a few pressure & bed sores that were ignored until that time when they became so infected that some had turned gangrenous. Hospice was involved in his care & it was horrifying that they allowed my dad's condition to become so bad. Even though my dad requested to use the restroom regularly, he was never allowed to do so. They would only let him take care of those needs in a diaper, again claiming that they couldn't risk him falling. They didn't even have any portable urinals/bedpans that could give him a little control of his bodily functions. The staff were nice enough but they aren't trained medical professionals, just people looking for a job. For instance, I once asked one of the staff a question & her response was that she didn't know as she was only there to wipe butts. The rooms were so tiny that they just reminded me of storage closets. Medical equipment was just tossed around & I was always having to tidy up his room. My dad was retired military & a super neat freak so he must have been horrified to see himself surrounded by all the mess on a regular basis. Meals looked OK but the food offered was not the kind of stuff my dad ate before. Very often, he just wouldn't eat. Instead of trying to offer him something that did appeal to him, they just told me they can't force him to eat. He did like the desserts & probably got most of his calories from these. There were no activities to stimulate the residents. They had a crafts section but for the most part, all those crafts were just put away in drawers & cabinets, rarely offered to the residents to break their boredom. Parking the residents in front of the TV seemed to be the only distraction offered & most just fell asleep when put there. As I said earlier, the staff really seemed to prefer compliance & they were always yelling at the couple of residents who still possessed some spirit in their personalities. Unfortunately, placing a loved one in one of these places is a learning experience for most of us. I thought the location & small set up would be nice for my dad but in hindsight, I would have considered a much larger & better staffed facility. There need to be checks & balances in the care offered & this place just doesn't have that. I will always live with the guilt of knowing I placed him in such a place & wonder how the end of his life would have been if I had done more research before placing him here. Please do the research I should have done.

My mom stayed in the Health Center for a few days for respite care so I could go out of town for…read morethe weekend. So, this review is not for the assisted living campus, which was absolutely gorgeous. The Health Center is at the far end of campus and looks like a typical nursing facility building. The good: *It was covered by my mom's VA benefits *the staff was super friendly *It was clean *It was secure *As soon as my LO started exhibiting wandering behaviors, they put a "wander bracelet " around her ankles a warning alarm would go off if she got too close to one of the doors. *They are thorough when it comes to instructions about medications *They will call you and maintain good communication if there are any issues while you are away. The bad: *The Health Center is, for all intents and purposes, a nursing facility, and as all such facilities these says, they are likely understaffed and have to put some of their late stage memory patients in the hallway if they are wheelchair bound, for supervision purposes (Its better than them sitting in their room without supervision) I say this only so that you are prepared if you are a first timer *It is sometimes difficult to get anyone to answer the phone until my mom was actually in the facility. The receptionist will forward you to the Health Center but anytime you try to leave a message the phone disconnects as soon as the voicemail message "beeps". Once my LO was admitted, all I had to tell the receptionist was that my mom was a patient and I needed to talk to the nurses station. *If you dont have EVERYTHING labeled with your loves ones name, and I mean EVERYTHING... you will bring your loved one home with 1/2 of what they came with. I imagine this is typical when you have a loved one with memory issues. They wander into rooms not knowing if it is their room and commence to get undressed for bed , and when a staff member discovers them, how are they supposed to know what needs to go back in their actual room when they are escorting your LO back? Lesson learned. That could be one reason. But it could also be the other way around... perhaps other patients wander into your LOs room and pick up things thinking they belong to them. Whatever the reason... for a temporary (respite) stay - label everything and leave instructions for the staff to call you if they find anything after you leave.
