This place is literally a 1 min walk from my apt, so I'm amazed that it took me so long to try it. I was in rush when I went, so I got items off of their hot food section. For $7 dollars I got 3 massive barbecued pork ribs, black beans and huge portion of rice. One of the ribs was a little bit overcooked and chewy, but the rest were tender and delicious. The beans were great but nothing out of the ordinary. I expected the rice to be a little bit more flavorful, but I think it was a nice compliment to the rest of the food. Only Cuban thing about this place is... ah yes, nada. However, the dishes here do seem to shine a very faint light upon those blinded and unfamiliar with the soul food of the Latin Caribbean. Just walk away slowly, jump on the train down the road, and head to Mi Bandera Restaurant in Union City, NJ for cuisine a little closer to home. This place is tucked away from the busier George St. When I went, during the middle to later part of the afternoon, the place was empty. The server was very courteous. For our lunch special (which was $6 each for a good amount of food), he spooned rice and meats and tonged the salad from buffet-style heating/cooling vats neatly into a dish for us. All the meats looked delicious. I've tried the beef stew and fried fish and they were both good. I also tried the yucca appetizers; they were interesting. The food here seems very solid and good. I would definitely be coming back here when I'm in the area, since it's pretty cheap and good! It seems to be one of the cheaper places in the area (minus the pizza and such and such). read more

Had the lunch special. 7 bucks gave me stewed meat, beef,Mangu and a little salad that since I took it to go I didn't know it was dry and guess I have to ask for dressing? Not sure. great inexpensive Dominican/Cuban style food.. the lunch special is an awesome deal. the place is quite popular at lunch since adjacent to the courts and city and county government buildings. there is a good amount of seating available, the place is pretty big, long and somewhat narrow space. a simple order and pay at the counter place, there are a few TVs. read more

You get to pick a meat, get your choice of rice/beans (an insane amount of rice btw), get a small small salad, and plantains (sometimes) for about $7. The rotisserie chicken is great. Very flavorful. Everything else is good too. Only went here once during the evening and they did not have much of a selection and were out of maduros. read more

This is a really pleasant Cuban & Dominican restaurant in downtown New Brunswick. My wife and I have been there a few times, and were very happy each time. The lunch special is a very good value. I really dug the pernil (generous portion, well-seasoned, not fatty or greasy). The chicken and pork dishes my wife tried both got thumbs up from her as well. You pick what you like at the counter and pay, then bring your food to your table. The lunch deal is protein, rice & beans and salad for $6.50. For tasty and generous, that works for me. I gave 4 stars mainly because if you come later in the day, they start running out of things, so the selection declines as you get into the evening (they are open until 9). The lunch special for $7 is a solid option. We have been here solely for the lunch specials on multiple occasions and while on some days the meat was a little on the drier side (our fault for not just asking for a splash of sauce on top, honestly) the food was still good. I think a lot of it comes down to timing- get there on the earlier part of lunch rush rather than later. This place is cheap for relatively large portions. I always get the roasted chicken. Once in awhile it's dry, but I still love the taste with the yellow rice. Their plantains are juicy. My husband & I stumbled across this place after driving around New Brunswick looking for parking. We stopped in at lunch time & there were a few people eating. We ordered the pernil, which was very good. A little dry but overall very tasty. We also tried the beef stew & I highly recommend over white rice. Will definitely return! read more

Mix of Cuban and Caribbean food which works well for me because I love them both! Been during lunch and if I worked closer I'd go again. I got a bunch of dishes and ate of of them for like four days...lol. I loved the red beans and rice *and* the black beans and rice- both wonderfully flavored and unique in their own rights. I definitely preferred the reb beans though. I had a really tasty red stewed chicken dish (adobo?) that was out of this world. I enjoyed the regular baked/rotisserie-style chicken as well. I see another reviewer said it was Mexican? Uh no! Also the abobo/red stew chicken is slightly sweet but I've never had it anywhere where it wasn't . It's part of what makes the dish unique and TASTY! Give it a try if you're in the area. There's a small eat in area in there as well. Service is good and the prices are really reasonable and dare I say pretty great for lunch in this area. Definitely a place to get some take out or enjoy a quick lunch. read more

I've been coming to this restaurant since 2001 at their previous location. The food is Ok. Pretty much your run of the mill local greasy spoon. I always order their bistec encebollado, pernil or rotisserie chicken. The portions are large, I just wish they would give you more meat and salad instead of filling your plate with tons of rice. If you are watching your sodium intake, this isn't the place for you. Their food is incredibly salty and they use MSG found in Sazon Goya. Overall, cheap but not to have more than once a week. read more

Great prices for big portions. The empanadas are really good. I always order the lunch special (rice, beans, plantains, salad, meats) because it is such a good value. Meats are a little oily and fatty but just cut them out! The place is NOT cuban. Its owners are Dominican and so is the chef. The food is amazing along with the price. My husband and I eat here at least 2 times a month. My favorite dish here is the Beef stew. The chicken is very good too. I switch back and forth between the 2 dishes. Get it with REd beans and rice and you will be eating for the next two days. So, I moved to the area a few months back, and noticed that the area lacks in latin cuisine. I found the Caribbean Cafe on Google, and decided to pay a visit, for lunch, based on the user reviews. It was not worth the 15 minute trip. The service, to go, was fairly quick, as I was in and out in under 5 minutes, but, then again, this could be explained by the lack of taste in their food. I tried the lunch special to go. It comes with a "salad". The salad had no taste whatsoever. It was a few tomatoes and lettuce soaked in water. A little lemon would have been nice. I tried the "arroz con guandules" which was very bland. I expected at least a little bit of seasoning, but nothing. I went in for the pernil, but when I saw it, it already had started crusting over, definitely not fresh, so I opted for the baked chicken. When I bit into the chicken, I understood why they had left the salad soak in water. It was so youd be able to wash down the meat. It was dry, and suprisingly, bland. If your looking for the opposite of what latin cusine is suppose to taste like, I highly recommend the Carribean cafe. But if your looking to enjoy a meal, and you come across the Carribean cafe, do yourself a favor and just run. I give this place 2 stars, and that because I feel generous. read more

I ordered for delivery and they sent me super greasy and fatty pernil, with a plate of rice. Beans and plantains were supposed to come with this order and when I called to ask about it the lady just said, "Oh we were out that's why I didn't send it." instead of telling me when I placed my order. I'm really not a picky eater but I took one bite of their Cuban Sandwich and spit it out. I was physically unable to swallow it. I see a lot of reviews about how inexpensive it is and how big the portions are but those things don't really matter if the food is inedible.
