I just want to start this by saying that I really like his drawing style and unique approach to doing caricatures (for which I think he deserves five stars). But I thought I should specifically make a review of Frank's website because that is often how we gather first impressions of the people/companies we hire. It was a pleasure to see him yesterday during an event when I noticed his website link. I decided to take a look at the site because my nephew's birthday is coming up later in the year and I know our family would enjoy having Frank cover the event. Despite his excellent presentation and set-up at the party, the website did not match his wonderful caricaturist persona. And I can't say enough that I really enjoyed how he "performed" as an entertainer and got so many people excited about his caricatures. Firstly, the website was very disorganized and hard to use because of the excessive colors and fonts. On top of that, I almost lost interest after trying to read just the first rambling introduction page. It was plain exhausting. In addition, there were too many tabs with repeated or unnecessary information. And finally, the FAQ page was completely bizarre, filled with weird and unrelated prior conversations with people. You would think it would just be a page with a series of common questions Frank gets and direct answers to those questions because that's what all FAQ pages normally look like. To put it simply, all I wanted was straightforward information from the FAQ page and maybe some pictures of his projector set-up so I could easily show my family what made him unique when I got home. And now I have a migraine instead. But he's a really good artist, and you'll really like him if you meet/see him in person first. I think he would be booked all the time if his website wasn't totally horrible. read more

We had a 1 yr birthday party for my grandson 2 weeks ago at the Oahu Veteran's Center. I wanted to have a caricature artist, so I checked on yelp and found Caricatures by Frank. He had good reviews so I reserved him for the party. He arrived about an hour before the start of the party to set up his station and noticed that we were still setting up the room. We were expecting additional help and found out that morning that they would not be able to help us. That left my 81 year old mom, my husband, and myself to set up the entire hall. He immediately asked me "what can I do to help"? This is the first time we were meeting and he made a wonderful first impression. Not many hired vendors would offer their services that way. When we had everything set up, he then went and set up his own station. When the party started, guests were immediately drawn to his table. His caricatures were awesome and guests could not stop talking about them. He is very personable and interacted well with everyone. I attended a birthday party for a boys 5th birthday party this past weekend and Caricatures by Frank was there. While all of the kids were playing games and eating cake, Frank was busy drawing caricatures of all the adults and his talents are obvious (he made me look like a bikini model and my husband look like Elvis!). Once you pick the caricature that you like (about 70 different ones to choose from) Frank quickly draws a likeness of your profile. We posted all of the completed caricatures on the wall when they were done and everyone had a good laugh afterwards. Even the kids got a kick out of Franks drawings as they were transformed into superhero's, Hawaiian warriors, and princesses in his drawings. Frank was well prepared to handle the large group at the party and was genuinely fun to be around. The best part was that everyone walked away with a few good laughs and souvenir. I hope to see Caricatures by Frank at future parties so he can draw a caricature of my husband as a bodybuilder! read more

Frank Uratani is an amazing caricature artist! He recently drew up a wonderful caricature featuring myself and my hubby surfing the waves, haha! Not to mention the awesome job he did creating caricatures of my daughter and son....we love 'em, Frank! I'm amazed at how well he got our features down using only photos to go by since we live in Michigan and he's way off in Hawaii...but, he did it! When the drawings arrived in the mail, we were all delighted to see our faces in the caricatures Frank had done for us. It was quite a surprise for my hubby and kids since they didn't know anything about it til they seen their faces in these...and, it sure made us all smile from ear to ear seeing our faces in action on these caricatures...me and hubby surfing the waves, my daughter as a beautiful mermaid, and my son catching a ride with a sea turtle! Frank did an awesome job at my wedding that was just last month (May 2015). Coming from Canada and getting married in hawaii, it was very tricky when choosing vendors for my wedding. But Frank made the process very easy, answered my never ending questions and responded right away(which was not the case for my other vendors) , he was always very friendly and upbeat, and the best part my guests love the pictures that some of them displayed their pictures in their homes as a conversation piece. Some of my guests even got to go home with multiple pictures. He was very accommodating for us not being in the US and went above and beyond, we (bride and groom) didn't get to do a couples picture and he was kind enough that he is sending us one by mail to Canada. My brother inlaw was looking to hire someone to do caricature drawings for his twin son's 1st Birthday Party. I told him I would do the research & find someone. Upon searching Yelp I came across Caricature by Frank his drawings, reviews & prices were great. I decided to call Frank & see if he was available for my twin nephews birthday party. I was recently at a party for a close family friend's daughter, and was very excited to see that they'd hired a caricature artist for the event. I've travelled quite a bit and have seen other caricature artists in touristy areas on the mainland, but I know that not all of these artists have appealing drawing styles. For the most part, I have to say that his "style" is pretty good, but I was disappointed to find out that he technically doesn't draw anything but the person's head, because the body portions of the drawings are essentially just photocopies of his "templates" in bulk. It's not original, so it's not a real caricature. read more

We invited Frank to come to our fundraising event for Special Olympics Hawaii, the Polar Plunge, and it was such a great decision! Frank was extremely generous with his time, had a great attitude, and amazing talent! He was quick to respond to emails and very easy to work with. All our participants loved being able to take home a fun souvenir. It only takes him a couple minutes to draw each person, so many people had the opportunity to take one home. I recently hired Frank Uratani to perform his caricature drawings for my baby's first birthday celebration in Hilo. I just wanted to say that he is an extremely talented man. Frank is a wonderful caricature artist. I saw his website wanttobeacartoonartist.com and posted a comment on it. He replied, and sent me caricature of my pup, Gus, who is my avatar. Wow! He did a super job capturing his spirit! I don't live in Hawaii, but if I did I would certainly hire Frank to come to any gathering I had. I have recently attended a birthday party and saw frank doing some kind of art work. At first i thought that it was another one of those street performers kind of deal. But upon further observation and a couple of drawing gone by, i said to my self "this guy is something else" in other words he wasn't one of those street performers.
