Decided to go with Carling electric after getting several quotes to run power for a new hot tub. I was having a new concrete pad poured and I wanted electrical hidden underneath. I had the trench dug by the concrete guys. Ralph explained his plan to hide as much of the conduit as possible, where boxes would be placed etc. All to code. Hired Ralph to replace outlets and switches in my mother's home. He was difficult to work with and had poor customer service skills. Some of the outlets he installed did not function. When I pointed this out to Ralph he became unpleasant and defensive. He quipped "I don't make the plugs." Duh, as if I did not know that, but he was installing them and the plugs were not defective, it was his install that was the problem! Overall, it was a hassle to deal with his attitude and I would not hire him again. read more

I called on a Saturday afternoon needing help with an issue with a LED pool light we were trying to instal for our teenagers birthday party tonight. The switch was not working. I had a sudden unexpected electrical issue with my house that I was getting ready to rent out. I'd been living in it up until now so this was a brand new issue that happened while we were cleaning it. I was freaking out since I'm getting ready to show it, and called Ralph a bit frantic. He was able to fit me in that evening, which was wonderful. He quoted me a price range saying that these things usually are within that range since one of the circuits in my house wasn't working. Anyways, he calls me about 45 mins before and lets me know when he'll be there, shows up on time, and starts working on it. He was a bit stumped at first (which we didn't blame him because we had already checked all the usual suspects before even calling him), but was determined to figure it out. After a couple hours he was able to figure out the issue and fix it! While he was there we also had him fix another electrical issue with an outside light that I'd ignored for a couple of years. We talked about price and we agreed on just above the price range he'd quoted me over the phone, because it had taken longer than he'd expected. Bottom line, he's very nice, very patient, determined, and explained everything that he did to us. We appreciated his responsiveness and his willingness to fit us in after normal work hours. We recently moved and found that our new house needed lighting and fans in the bathrooms and laundry room. We searched for a contractor that could do this kind of work that we knew would include installing some new ducting. Through Yelp, we learned that Ralph has done this kind of work for others, and that his customers were very satisfied. Ralph responded very promptly to our call, and came to our house to assess the work that was needed. There were some things that were unusual, such as an inoperative central exhaust fan in the attic for the bathrooms and some unusual lighting issues; but Ralph seemed to understand what needed to be done so we scheduled the actual workday. On the day that the work was to be done, Ralph and my husband went to Home Depot to purchase the equipment and materials needed. My husband told me how impressed he was with how quickly and efficiently Ralph picked out the materials, and how he took the time to explain how these materials would be used. I had to run an errand for an hour. By the time I got back, Ralph had already changed out several lights and had started installing one of 4 new exhaust fans that included changing out switch boxes to add fan operation switches. The installation required climbing up into our very warm attic to run exhaust conduit from the newly installed fans to the existing central roof exhaust. The attic space is cramped and hot; yet, as my husband, a civil engineer, will attest (since he crawled up there afterwards to inspect the work), Ralph did a beautiful and very professional job. The total project took over 10 hours to complete. Ralph worked diligently throughout that period, taking only a few minutes off at our insistence to break for a bit of lunch. (He then deducted that time from his bill.) We are extremely pleased with how everything turned out, and we were incredibly impressed with Ralph! We will certainly call him the next time we need any electrical work done at our house. read more

I have used Ralph Carling twice now. I hired him to replace the ballast in one of my recessed kitchen fluorescent lights. The project required replacing the whole can. He did a good job and was efficient and reasonably priced and I was very satisfied with the work he performed . When I decided to replace all the fluorescent recessed lights with LEDs I called Ralph to do the job. He replaced all six cans and I also had him convert a two-plug outlet in my guest bathroom to a four-plug outlet. Again, I was quite pleased with his work. However, I recommended Ralph to a friend who needed some electrical work done on his house. He called and made an appointment for the following week. But Ralph was a no show. Because I do not like making referrals to friends that don't work out, I have only rated him four stars, whereas I originally gave him five. read more

The work that was needed, I thought would take 3 days, he was able to complete in a day and a half. Upsold me on two new hall lights while there to fix other various electrical problems. Did not ask about placement of lights and left a huge mess. When asked how he would remedy the mess he said he would put a vacuum in his car in the future. Also he job he was asked to do he said was impossible so he connected my kitchen light to the dining room light making both go one when turning the kitchen light on. I had talked to him about putting in a remote switch if he couldn't run wire. Said he was unfamiliar with that and offered to come back for more money to install one I purchased later. I have had Ralph do work at my house for over 8 years from can lights to full panel changes. He helped me add a 100 amp sub panel for our swim spa and it has worked flawlessly ever since. I have had his work inspected several times thru my city permits and there has never been any corrections needed. Even with the panel change when SMUD came out to pull new service wire to the house they made comments that the electrician knew what he was doing. He just recently helped me wire in another sub panel for my new shop and carport in the back yard he even stayed and put the fan light together before he left. We made an appointment with him to come to our house, later in the week, and install a ceiling outlet in our garage for an additional garage door opener. He arrived on time and installed the outlet. I had just purchased a dishwasher from Home Depot and when it was being delivered, I was told that it needed a separate outlet created for a "hard wire". I don't even know if I'm saying that correctly. The delivery guys wouldn't even do a swap of the old with new dishwasher until I had this hard wire install completed.
