This is my second time going to a Carlos bakery. This one is located right next to a Starbucks. It was empty inside and about 3 people working in there. I ordered a lobster tail and a cannoli. They were both delicious. They were out of bottled water but luckily I had one in the car. Nice location but it just looked like a regular bakery to me. Nothing fancy like you see on tv. To make this as simple as possible, it's not that Carlo's Bake Shop is bad. Their stuff is fair enough. I had their Canoli & Peanut Butter (soft) Cookie and both were what I expected. And to be very fair, I did not have their cakes, which of course is what brought them to fame on TLC. But, I do think that they're far more hyped than they should be given the quality of their stuff. What I got wasn't anything special and with a metric nut-ton of great local bakeries around the area, it's not like they are doing anything extra ordinary unless you have extremely specific cake decorating requests. If you go, I suggest you go to experience the Cake Boss fame -- not in a hunt of anything extraordinarily special. And if you do go, pay careful attention that they have a ticket number dispenser to the right of the entrance. They only serve customers based on ticket number and this policy may not be instantly obvious to you since the bake shop is often busy. read more

What a major disappointment. Our adventure started with asking the price for a 12" banana cream pie, they told us 14.95 and then changed the price to 18.95. Nice!! That should have been a warning. We made the bad decision to purchase the pie and left for our family dinner. Well, the pie had less than 1 banana in it and was all cream. I guess I mistakenly purchased a cream pie, NOT!! What moved the needle to out right negative, the crust was like a rock and had no taste. WOW, what a great treat for our family! Our next trip for any pastry will be Gallos or even Shoprite. Both have better offerings and a much better pricing, that doesn't magically change. I say thank you to this over priced bakery. For the lobster tail alone, Carlo's deserves at least 4 stars. I wasn't sure what to expect or what a lobster tail was, but one taste of this cream filled pastry and I was in heaven. We drove to Hoboken, NJ for the famous Cake Boss bakery. Been watching the show for years. The kids were super excited to go! We ordered cake slices, pastries, and cookies. With drinks we spent over $100.00. The shop is quaint and cute! When we tried the items, we were not impressed. The pastries were great. Those I totally recommend. The cookies were good. The cake slices....nothing to rave about. Plain actually. The red velvet, to me, didn't taste like red velvet. More like non flavored cake with cream cheese icing. The cream cheese icing with strong. Like if it had sour cream in it. Not as sweet or "cream cheesy" of that makes any sense....Rainbow cake for the kids- all for looks and color. No taste. The crumb cake I got was ok....the lobster tail pastry was delicious. People must order cakes for the looks and not the taste. Large selection of pastry from cookies to cannoli and very nice staff. I carried home a mini cherry topped cheesecake, mini sfogliatella and cannoli. All were better than good. The cheesecake was light and creamy, the sfogliatella was crisp and airy while the center remained moist and deliciously creamy with a hint of candied orange and the cannoli was perfect, creamy whipped filling that was not too sweet with a crisp and crunchy shell. The prices are a bit high especially for the cheesecake which was 6.95 but I have to admit it was worth the splurge of 15.95 for the three items. We visited the shops in Red Bank, Hoboken and Marlton (right outside Cherry Hill). My favorite store is the Red Bank one but I will NEVER again visit the one in Marlton. The girls behind the counter are just rude which was incredibly surprising given my experiences at the other locations. She made an error in checking me out and I kindly pointed it out and she was incredibly hostile and full of attitude. I did not go to this location but a friend brought me one of their lobster tail pastries to try recently and I fell in love. The crust has a perfect buttery flakiness and the cream isn't too sweet. It was the perfect texture and flavor balance. I have to hang with that friend more often. read more

I wanted sfogliatelle and this was the only place close by. It was a little chewy and the filling kind of took away from that signature flavor that sfogliatelle has. The lady said it had Irish cream in it.. weird for an Italian cookie to have baileys in it? And it was $6! The cannolis were ok but there were basically no chocolate chips in the filling. I dropped in today. I'd never been in any Carlos Bakery before so I wanted to give it a try. I was greeted immediately and felt very welcomed. We visited the bakery Saturday & purchased an assortment of cannolis, a hazelnut filled lobster tail & a Nutella cupcake. The cannolis are the best I have ever had. I've never been fond of cannolis but I guess that's because they weren't Carlo's cannolis!! The filling in the lobster tail was delicious. My cupcake was very good. I purchased it because I love Nutella. I'm not a fan of yellow cake as I find it dry but Carlo's yellow cake was moist & delicious and I would have eaten it plain. The staff was very helpful. What a disappointment! I stopped in early in the day last Saturday for a few goodies. The cases were full, and a lot to choose from. I purchased a Danish with a crumb topping, a chocolate chip pound loaf and a small crumb cake. The Danish was very good. It was tasty and moist. However, the chocolate chip loaf and the crumb cake were nearly un-edible! They were so dry, that I needed to drink water with them just to swallow the few bites that I ate. I threw both of them out. Listen, if you've ever watched Cake Boss and thought, "Damn, that looks delicious!" I promise you, this place does not disappoint. We aren't from this area but we make it a point to drive a few hours to visit this place every year. Their lobster tails are perfectly crisp and the cream inside is delicate and light. I've never had a cheesecake quite like this. It's crustless but it's decadent enough, you don't miss it. We had a strawberry shortcake doughnut and it was the perfect balance between sweet, soft, strawberry and creamy. I don't know what Buddy was thinking when he changed his old fashioned crumb cake recipe and size. Clearly this commercialized bakery has now changed his product and you can tell he jeopardized quantity for quality. What a horrible move. Go back to your old roots and ways and make the crumb cake by the sheet with the big crumbs and little cake now it's a 50 to 50 ratio when it used to be 80 (crumbs) to 20 (cake). This whole expansion to multiple locations has completely changed this bakery. This original Hoboken bakery used to be so much better. read more

I've seen Cake Boss a couple of times on TV but never realized how "popular" it must be. This place was completely mobbed when we arrived at 7pm on a Saturday night in late Nov. 2014. After waiting 45 minutes for our number to be called, we purchased a lobster tail, a red velvet cupcake, a mini strawberry cheesecake and 2 hazelnut cream puffs. I have to say, the lobster tail was yummy and something I'd never seen at any other bakery before. The other baked goods we tried were average at best....absolutely nothing remarkable or exceptional and on-par with something you'd pick up from the bakery department of your local grocery store. If I happened to be in the neighborhood again and there was ZERO wait, I'd stop in for another lobster tail.....but I'd never wait in line again for these overall mediocre baked goods. McMillan's, Sweet Eats and L&M will continue to be my go-to bakeries for consistent quality and deliciousness! read more

When you walk in it smells amazing and it's very clean and well decorated. The cakes are beautiful and very impressive. But There were at least five people working yet we waited at least 15 minutes for the two people ahead of us to get service. Once we ordered our cupCakes it was another 5-10 minutes before we could pay. Another customer had an issue and everything stopped so our cashier could watch the action instead of helping us. The quintessential classic crumb bun and coffee after Sunday Mass. The crumb bun was stale, with a bland taste and bad consistency. The coffee had grounds in it, although it tasted good and was a dark blend. Coming here for me was bringing back memories of my youth when my parents would stop and get pastries after Church. My mouth was literally watering for the crumb bun, as I haven't had one in years. What a letdown... It's something so basic that I had high expectations for a classic bakery staple. Buddy, if you're reading this, better get the quality control in order. I grew up in North Jersey too, and my local place from back then Vaccaro's beats you hands down. Tried a cannoli in hopes of finding something on their menu that wasn't sickly sweet for once. The bare-bones variety of their cannoli is still overwhelmingly sweet, while it is supposed to be the least sweet. Plus, the cannoli shell was old and brittle in texture, the shell itself tasted savory (???), the ricotta/marscapone filling tasted like pure sugar, and there was barely any dried fruit in the filling. I get the feeling this location is just some type of corporate leveraged write off. I understand, it's Saturday during the Summer, but they didn't really have jack for sale. OMG so I've been going to Carlos in Hoboken for years and I've tried to patronize the Carlos in Marlton as well until I went in to find the new sizes that they now have of some of their most popular deserts. We were shocked when we saw the lobster tails were less than half the original size and they were charging the same price. The cupcakes were rich & moist and the frostings were light yet flavorful. The lobster tail was filled with a not too sweet cream and had a crispy shell. Found out about this little shoppe while traveling to a holiday party and was in need of a bakery. I had no idea that this place was "The" Carlo's Bake Shop, but a franchise. It was very busy, but the staff was friendly, and the process for check-in was pretty good. The prices were sort of outrageous, but I will say that for the area, it is probably acceptable. If you are from Lakehurst, like I am, it might be a bit of a sticker shock. However, I was able to leave with a nice little cake that was within my price range. I really just had one gripe: The cake that I wanted was more holiday looking in their pictured menu, and the ones they had made had flowers on them to make them look more plain. I wasn't really happy with this, but on a budget, I took it, anyway. I feel like a place like Carlo's should have stuck with what they were advertising. I certainly was not going to wait what could be an hour for a new cake. When we got to our party, of course, everyone wanted to try it because it was made by a bakery from the famous "Cake Boss", but I thought it was VERY sweet. I always get my parent's bday cakes here because they are always beautifully made and delicious. This year I picked up my mom a $45 mousse cake ($45!!!!!!!!). It was worth the price bc it was sooo good and looked too pretty too eat. BUT I asked to have "Happy birthday Mom" written on it and the font looked terrible. It looked like a 3rd grader finger painted it on there. If I am paying that much for a cake I hope that the writing on it looks perfect and presentable. read more

Bland and not worth your time. I was really disappointed. If you want good pastries, you go to villabate in bensonhurst brooklyn. You pay for quality at villabate and prices are reasonable.
