Tensioner spring snapped. Cable and rollers broke on our garage door a couple of weeks ago. I searched for garage door repair operators on Yelp and came across Carl's. Family owned and operated with third generation involved, which is rare these days. MHIC number is in low 2000's. Good thing. A family member living in Harford county has been using Carl's for decades. That, and seeing great reviews on Yelp convinced me to make the call. I called Thursday and we were all set up to get the job done today. The tech arrived, looked at the situation and gave an immediate, reasonable quote. The tech was kind, courteous, professional and efficient. The job took 45 minutes and my garage door (manual) is once again functional. I chose Carl's because I'd read many good reviews on Yelp and on my neighborhood Facebook group. It turned out to be an expensive mistake. The short version is that the technician cranked on a part to try to tighten the cable and the part broke. The part is no longer made so I had to replace the entire torsion assembly. The company didn't call that afternoon (5/3/2023) with an estimate for the replacement as the technician said. In fact, they didn't call until 5/9/2023. They subsequently said that the delay was because "This discussion took longer than anticipated as we needed to find a way to fix this problem due to very tight headroom and searching for a replacement torquemaster we were not able to find." This is odd since the other 2 companies had no issue with the "very tight headroom" or finding a replacement torsion assembly. I had 2 other garage door companies come out for an estimate and both agreed that Carl's had broken the part. The real problem was diagnosed as a separation in the track. Carl's later claimed that I'd changed my story about the reason for the initial call. This is not true. I relayed the diagnosis to them but I never "claimed the original call was for rollers "catching" in the track and that nothing was wrong with the door otherwise". I filed a complaint with BBB and ultimately ended up "accepting" the resolution - not because I was satisfied with the outcome, but because I didn't want to waste any other time with this company. Do yourself a favor and skip this company. They are not truthful, they do not stand behind their work and didn't really seem to know what they were doing. read more

I lost almost an entire day of work waiting for Sears to show up to repair a broken spring on my double garage door, with my car stuck inside, only to be told they screwed up the schedule and had us down for the wrong day. Called Carl's about installing a double garage door opener a a hone I recently purchased. They were very responsive in scheduling an estimate and the estimator, Matt, was punctual and very helpful. The work was scheduled and the installer, Chris, arrived on time and did a very nice and neat job of installing the opener and showing me the features.
