We were passing through Chillicothe, Ohio and stopped at Carl's Townhouse because it looked like a historic, special little spot. Unfortunately, the experience didn't quite match the charm. We came in during a rush, but there were several open tables and all were dirty. One even had cleaning supplies left on it. After a few minutes, a table was cleared for our family of five. Service started off fine. Drinks came quickly and the kids loved their milkshakes. Food was a bit mixed. My cheeseburger basket was confusing. Apparently they are slider-sized unless you specify, and mine came out very plain with just bun, burger, and cheese even though I ordered toppings. Other items like the Reuben, bacon burger, and pancake with egg were good. One of my kids could not eat the grilled chicken sandwich because of a strange texture, and her fries were forgotten. There were a lot of little misses. No napkins at first, then only three for five people. Forgotten butter. We had to get up more than once to ask for things. The environment didn't help. It was freezing inside to the point I ended up sitting outside. The bathroom was clean but cluttered with cleaning supplies and equipment, which felt a little odd. There was also a loud speakerphone call happening nearby, and the adjacent table had such a strong cigarette smell that one of my kids went out to the car. Food looked great just make sure you have all your food if you order to go, manager said it was due to shift change which was a lie the same exact people were still there for morning shift. Even the server who took my order. I guess he thought I called it in. If he wouldn't have lied and owned up to the mistake and corrected it the right way, a better review would be given. I was there this past weekend (02/14) and had to wait 45 minutes for a water (waitress had long black curly hair), after she looked at my table multiple times, we were barely acknowledged and had to flag her down any time we needed anything, which is frustrating when you consider the fact that they weren't super busy. This is an older place, established in 1939. It shows its age, but otherwise seems clean. If anyone is looking for a shiny, modern place, this is not it. The help all seem to be friendly. The onion rings actually contained slices of onion and the Ruben sandwich was grilled without bread and perfect. I would not hesitate to eat here again. read more

Husband has the chicken sandwhich with onion rings, I had a salad with grilled chicken, so I could eat my 2 fave diner dishes--onion rings and pie! The onion rings were breaded with a slightly sweet coating and were cooked to perfection. The pie was mixed berry--homemade--and was to die for. Did not disappoint. Staff was incredibly friendly and accommodating and attentive. I asked for extra chicken on my salad, and not an eye was batted, always asking if we needed/wanted anything or if they could get us more to drink. Very dirty restaurant. One of the servers was constantly coughing in her hand, then handling food and utensils and napkins . Dirty countertops, dirty, and clean dishes all next to each other. cleaning solutions all sitting next to napkins and silverware. Floors were absolutely filthy. Servers were eating and drinking behind the counter, not washing their hands after then directly serving food to people.. We went to this place a couple years ago and it was really nice. A must visit every time I am in town! My wife is from Chillicothe & her family knows that Carl's is a must visit at least once every time we are in town visiting them. The food is always fresh & satisfying & the price is very reasonable. The staff & owner are very friendly & have spoken to our family each time we have visited over the past few years that I have been going. Al though the food is good, the service is terrible. It's so hard to get service at lunch. The owners obviously is oblivious to this. Also is not the servers fault maybe. We have been here for over 10 minutes and the server still hasn't came over. We have kids and don't want to load them back up. So here we are and still no server. More than just quick food. Staff make it an enjoyable experience. Food is excellent and a really good selection. Everything that you will expect from a diner and more. Over on your left you'll meet local old timers that know Chillicothe history and may have even met general Sherman himself. Friendly folks weaving tall tails and being as kind as you'd expect. On the right you get the counter where kids and loners mingle for friendly banter and camaraderie. A good clean family friendly atmosphere with hearty food at a decent price. You can get salads and some "vegan" choices but you might need to suggest the ingredients if you lean too far to the left. Passing through, we saw this on G and decided to give it a shot--great choice! Food was fresh and very tasty! Reuben, Carl Burger, fried shrimp, onion rings: nothing soggy or bland. Super friendly staff. Waitress explained how they use all the local products they can. The meat comes from a local butcher shop; I could tell, especially with the super flavorful corned beef! On the wall, a collage explains the story of the diner and its extensive relocation history. Next time you are in Chillicothe, avoid the chains and take a trip back in time in an iconic retro diner. Sit at the counter in original stools or at period table and chairs. Very reasonably priced diner menu. The chili was a classic recipie loaded with ground beef. The hamburger and crinkle fries basket is also executed in classic diner style. My great grandfather bought the prefab building that was on display at the New York World Fair in 1939 and reassembled it in Chillicothe. He owned Gerber construction company in Chillicothe and was an engineer. read more

We stopped in for lunch after visiting the Adena Mansion and Gardens. You seat yourself, but luckily although it's rather small there's a decent number of tables and booths and we found something in the back. It took a bit more than ten minutes for someone to come over and take our drink order. By then we had already chosen what we wanted (it's not a big menu to go through so it didn't take very long) and said we were ready to go ahead and order. The waitress said that she can't take food orders out of order and would be back. A few minutes later we got our drinks, but she still didn't take our lunch order. At around the 25 minute mark, she came by and took the order of the table next to us and then ours. I thought this was very strange, as most restaurants try to flip tables as often as possible so if you're ready to order they take it. After we ordered our food it took about another fifteen minutes for our sandwiches. The table next to us who had ordered at the same time had received and almost finished their meal before us. I had a grilled cheese sandwich with ham, and fried mac and cheese bites. Most of the side dishes are something fried and I thought they sounded good. It was fine. The sandwich was burned and rather greasy. The mac and cheese tasted kind of like Kraft. It was definitely artificial cheese. My parents both had the mac and cheese with added bacon. The waitress acted like she had never heard of such a thing when my mom asked for it, even though it's on the menu. She rolled her eyes a little and went "Okayyy...." rather sarcastically, which I thought was rude. Mom had french fries, which were ok, and my Dad had the Carl's chips, which were really good. Both of them said their sandwiches were also pretty burnt. The food was just very mediocre. I had hoped it would make up for the service, but it didn't. It's obviously a very popular place for locals, and watching the restaurant (as we had plenty of time to do), it seemed that locals were getting better service. People would come in and waitresses would come over immediately to greet them with hugs and taking their orders. Some people ordered, got their food, and left in between us ordering our food and getting our check (which also took a very long time. We felt a little forgotten back in the corner). When it came time to pay, there was a woman already paying at the counter so we lined up behind her. Then an elderly man sort of pushed in front of us which we let go because it's unclear if he even saw us. After he was done paying, however, the waitress taking payments walked away from the counter to go deliver some food and wait some tables without saying a word to us. We had to just stand there until another waitress came along and noticed we were still waiting to pay. All in all, while the food was disgusting or anything, I wouldn't go back again. I didn't even touch on the bathrooms, which were not clean. Although the rest of the restaurant seemed clean so maybe that was just a by-product of the Saturday rush. read more

We just left Chief Logan Reservation after a night of camping...so we were a little rough...we called to be sure of the circumstances. Outside seating was an option!!! The waiter was excellent. My son's girlfriend found this restaurant while we were traveling as she knows I am a big fan of the show; Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives from the Food Network. While Guy Fieri hasn't been here, I have and I can tell you it is a great place to eat. I thoroughly enjoyed my two egg breakfast with bacon and was pleasantly surprised when the waitress offered to jazz up my home fries with bell peppers and onions. Found Carl's on Yelp while looking for a local place to try while in town on business. Stopped in for a quick bite just after the lunch rush. Sat at the counter and no one even acknowledged me even after a couple of minutes (and I was seated very close to the register). Eventually two or three people asked if I had been helped. Just seemed weird that someone wasn't assigned to the counter (or if they were not paying attention). The woman who took my order was obviously having a bad day. Very terse...I don't need my ego stroked at a diner of all places but the vibe was tense and a smile would have helped. The guy busing tables was bitching to a patron (clearly knew him) about his ex-wife. The joy of sitting at the counter I guess! Overall the food was good...had the sliders with the onion rings (which were exceptionally tasty). But the vibe to me was a locals joint thru and thru, almost to the point that I felt like I didn't belong. Even cashing out the check was painful...I was clearly done eating and sat there for a while waiting for the total. Never got it and just went to the register and told her what I had.
