Nothing "wrong" with the Big Chains, they have their place, but the local booths should always be sat in and their tables supped at. Maddy's fit the bill for a break away from work lunch while on the road. Right out of the 50's, this gleaming location greets you with chrome, red bar stools, the requisite "Kiss My Grits" tin sign on the wall, and 50's music piping from the speakers. The special that day: double cheeseburger. $6. In today's economy?? Only $6?? All the menu items were priced nicely, easy on the wallet. While I was tempted to try a burger, I wanted to see how a diner classic would pan out, so ordered the country fried steak. Placed my order, and before I could manage to take in all the deco on the walls the food arrived from the line station right behind the counter. They serve you a steak knife, but you don't need it, the steak is fork ready, as it should be. They give you two sides option, so I went with green beans and taters, of the french variant. Both were spot on, and I left full and satisfied. I think the total bill came in under $10 or right around there. Good food, filling, and super light on the budget - what more can you ask for? This week end my wife and another couple were out and about. Maddy's was the only diner open in the Portsmouth area. It was highly rated so we thought we'd stop and enjoy some good diner food. They are kind of informal so we seated ourselves. After 10 minutes or so, our waitress stop by and took our drink order. I always try to be fair in my assessment of any place I eat., but the coffee here was really bad. When you poured your cream into it and turned a gray color. We ordered our food and it came out one plate at a time. Not all of it came out and we had to wait a while to get it. The food was not good and it was truly a disappointment because they received such high ratings and from outside its an awesome shiny silver diner. I'm not going to go into specific detail details. We asked several times for things that never showed up or arrived after we were done eating. Such as refills on our water, syrup for French toast and waffles and a sauce for a burger, my wife ordered. I think what really aggravated me and describes our entire experience was when my wife asked for some napkins the server roll her eyes in the back of her head and sacheted away from our table. I will not go back to this establishment and it truly makes me sad as I really make a concerted effort to support local establishments. read more

I first visited Maddy's Diner 23 five or 6 years ago when helping deliver donations to the pike County Food Pantry. This was my first time back in this part of the state since then and I told my wife we needed to stop here for lunch. This is strictly a breakfast/lunch place and it closes around 2-3p in the afternoon. We arrived around 1pm and "seated ourselves". A waitress greeted us almost immediately and took our drink orders. She returned promptly to take our food orders. Now this is NOT a fast food place and it takes a couple of minutes for your food to come out but it's worth the wait. The food was as good as I recalled from my last visit in 2018. My wife is impressed that I can always find places like this - i.e. the stainless stell look and feel of a classic old diner that also serves great food. One of the best burgers in Ohio. Your basic 1/3rd pound burger, nicely seasoned, with cheese and very fresh lettuce, tomato, onion, and great pickles. The onion straws are a great complement. Fast and friendly service, too! read more

We were visiting my daughter and her husband in Waverly from out of state and my mother wanted to try this old timey diner so we did. I ordered biscuits and gravy and after waiting 45 minutes for our food the waitress delivered my b & g to another table that came in after us (regulars) then came to tell me they were out of biscuits and gravy and weren't making anymore and I had to order something else. I was so upset that they would give my food to someone else and make me order something else. I'll NEVER go back. EVER! read more

Go here for the atmosphere, not the food. Typical diner food in a retro diner. The staff is friendly and the place is filled with locals.The place is pretty neat. Like a step back in time. The food however, did nothing for me. I had the Delmonico Steak, which had an odd flavor and as much gristle as meat. Baked potato was good however. Wife had the Philly steak and fries and was not impressed with either. I'll pass on this place from now on. read more

This is a review of breakfast. I have been coming to Diner 23 for breakfast for about 5 years and love the simple dishes they offer. Prices are good, food is always hot. Their service in the last year or so has slacked some but I usually come with my brother and we like to talk while we wait. My personal favorite is the Belgium waffle with sausage links. Their pancakes, hash browns, eggs, bacon, toast, all of it is good. If you can't find something you like then you just don't like breakfast. read more

I've usually enjoyed the food here but today tried the special Johnny Marzetti. Waitress said everybody loved it but it was basically noodles and spaghetti sauce. The restaurant was so cold it was hard to enjoy eating. I heard several people complain about it being cold and the waitress said that's because they won't turn the temperature up. I absolutely love this place! I go here whenever I can. I swear they have the best burgers in town, no joke! I have so many favorites. The soup beans and cornbread are perfect. I love that the cornbread is very traditional and not sweet. Delicious hash-browns and just breakfast altogether. And you gotta get the sweet tea :). Marzetti was the worst I have ever had. It was spaghetti sauce with overcooked noodles. The sauce tasted straight from the can. Very acid tasting. The apple slices was in a think gel and had a weird tasted. I couldn't get the taste out of my mouth. My friend got a fried steak/veal. It was so over cooked she was unable to eat it. Spent $22.00 for something I wouldn't serve to a dog. Waitress never even asked how it tasted or checked up on us. I could understand if it was just my food but it was both meals. read more
