Finally had a chance to stop by Carlson's for lunch while in Frederick and, unfortunately, thought it was just okay. The star here is definitely the donuts. The Thai food, I could have definitely did without. Order up front at the counter and you can either dine in or take it to go. Seems like most decide to take it to go as your meal comes in a to-go container. Note they don't have plates, so if you plan to dine in, you'll have to get creative with sharing the dishes. We decided on the wonton soup, drunken noodles with beef, and fried rice with chicken. The wonton soup wasn't bad and came with a decent amount of wontons (made with minced chicken). Both the noodles and rice dish came with more vegetables than needed. My drunken noodles came with chicken (not beef as ordered) and was more like a stir fry. Also not spicy like the drunken noodles I'm used to. The fried rice was okay, but lacked that fried rice taste. The Thai iced tea was also just okay - super sweet. This is a whole in the wall joint. It's worth stopping by. The place only has a few tables, but most customers order takeout, so there is always a table available. The food is great. My coworkers all tell me that the pad thai is their favorite dish. My favorite dish here is the Drunken Noodles. However, You can't go wrong with either one. Definitely stop by to try this place. After reading all of the positive reviews about the donuts, I knew I had to give Carlson's a try. Since they're closed on Monday's and that's actually the best day for me to stop by, I ended up in the area on a Wednesday and stopped in around 10. Like everyone said in other reviews, the earlier you come, the better the variety of donuts to choose from. I came in and was greeted by a woman behind the counter. I purchased a 1/2 dozen of donuts. 3 twist glazed and 3 chocolate frosted. The store/restaurant itself was no thrills, just small and sort of hole in the wall-ish. I brought my purchase home and gave them a try. They were pretty good. The person I shared them with said the exact same thing, just pretty good. Were they the best donuts I've ever eaten like some of the other reviewers on here, absolutely not! They were a little bit above average. Soft, fresh, nice glaze, and a great size. I will say, they aren't that great the next day. So it's like a, eat them on the same day, type of thing. From other reviews. I was expecting mind blowing donuts. I didn't get that. I would I give them a try again if I were in the neighborhood, but I wouldn't make a special trip to come here just for their donuts. I will, however, come back to try their Thai food. We ordered Pad Thai, which we usually do. Next time I have to remember not to add chicken, I like it that way. We also ordered 12) Koa Pad Kee Mao and 15) Pad Eggplants. Bangarang! Stopped by for takeout (dine-in is currently not available), and ordered the green curry (beef) and a couple of donuts. The curry was amazing, perfect balance of spice with the coconut sweetness. Usually something gets lost in the takeout, but not this time. Absolutely fantastic meal. It seemed clean inside and the selection of donuts is right behind the register. They are closed on Mondays! The food was very yummy. I ordered chicken pad Thai which was $11 and it was delicious. I thought it was odd that this random Thai restaurant also happened to serve doughnuts, so the bf and my friend decided to swing by here one evening when we were in town to scope it out. We got an assortment of doughnuts and my friend and I also decided to order some Thai dishes off of their menu. I opted for an order of their pad kee mao sans meat, while my friend got another noodle dish. I opted for it to be spicy, and it had a kick to it, though I thought the dish could have been a little more flavorful. My friend thought the same way about her noodle dish. Funnily enough, though, the doughnuts were pretty good on their own. The coconut frosted doughnut I got was very flavorful and soft and chewy, as were the bowtie and Boston crème that I had gotten to share with the bf. All of us were pleasantly surprised with their doughnuts, and would recommend this place for the doughnuts alone. Donuts were decent and they had a fair number of flavors available when I came in around lunchtime. We liked the seasonal pumpkin and my partner was excited they had cronuts. We both agreed that overall it wasn't something we'd go out of our way for next time though. 3.6 stars. I also ordered a drunken noodle while I was there. I have very mixed feelings about it. On the plus side, it came out quick and I enjoyed it quite a lot (I was hungry after PT). It wasn't overly spicy - in fact, it wasn't spicy at all because I had asked for less spicy, expecting the food to be on the normal Thai spicy scale. However, downsides to my noodles - very oily. No basil at all and no smoky flavor at all. Based on how they prepared the veggies, they were probably Chinese operated, not thai. That said however, it was still very satisfying. I've had this place bookmarked for a while so I decided to stop by and give it a try. The first time I called the phone just rang. Luckily, I had read some reviews & knew it may take a couple of tries before I got an answer. I waited about 10 minutes and called back. A nice lady answered the phone, answered my questions about a couple of dishes as well as the different levels of spiciness, and she took my order. I ordered the shrimp basil fried rice and some spring rolls. I decided on a medium spice level for my rice. She said my order would be ready in 25 to 30 minutes so I had time to whip up a salad before I had to pick up my meal. Upon arrival, I went in and waited in line socially distanced. The place is intimate so they only allow three people in at a time, which I can appreciate. When I got to the register the lady asked my name and returned with my order. As she was bagging up my order we made small talk. She assured me that the medium spice level would be fine since I just wanted a little spice. I saw a sign that read "cash for donuts" so I asked about that policy so I would know for future reference. The nice lady explained that in the morning that's their policy because people try to buy one or two donuts on a credit card so they require cash, but in the evening if you add a donut to your dinner order you can pay for it with your credit card. Then, she did the sweetest thing and she put a donut in my bag. How nice of her! I really did want a donut but since she had already swiped my credit card I didn't wanna bother her to make the change. She must of been reading my mind. As soon as I arrived at home, I unboxed everything, set a place at the table, and begin to enjoy my meal. The spring rolls were nice and crispy, and I really liked the sweet chili dipping sauce. I prefer that over duck sauce because it's much more flavorful. My basil shrimp fried rice was delicious. I like the variety of vegetables they included in the rice. There was broccoli, onions, snow peas, carrots, & something red, either tomatoes or red peppers, and basil leaves to tie it all together. FYI, they leave the tails on the shrimp just so you know. The rice is a nice portion and I only ate half of it. The shrimp were a nice size but there wasn't an abundance of them in the rice. Next time, I will probably order a second meat so I have a little bit more protein. read more

Carlson's is so good!! I have only ever had the pad Thai and pad see ew but I am confident anything else I try will be delicious. I ordered takeout from here a few months ago and unfortunately had to wait quite a while to get my food. On the other hand, I was able to get a couple of donuts for cheaper, which made up for my long wait. The man who gave me my food and donuts was very kind and sociable. I assume the restaurant was short-staffed because of the pandemic amongst us so I am hoping the restaurant is coping well and do not blame them for slower service than usual. read more

This is a local establishment run by a friendly bunch of Thai ladies, so you know the food is authentic. Even the donuts, which are the highlight on the menu. And since they open at 0530 in the morning, they also have a good selection of traditional American breakfast fare. Don't let the disposable dinnerware put you off, everything from the kitchen is very good. For the donuts, I'd give this place 4 stars. They don't have the widest variety, but everything available is fresh and delicious. The donuts rival Shoppers' giant donuts in size, and any toppings or fillings are applied in generous amounts. You definitely need to arrive early, they sell out quick! The Thai food is pretty good and authentic too, but the portion sizes are quite small. That's why I only give them 3 stars. Service is quick and pleasant. The dining area is clean enough. Their business is mostly take-out, but there are a few tables available for seating in the small dining room. So I have a big problem with this place. Big. Donut shaped. But noodly as well. Here's the issue- they run out of donuts before they start serving Thai food. I mean, sure, they have a full breakfast menu filled with eggs and meats and breads. And yes, the donuts themselves could be seen as a meal on their own, as they are not at all small. Not the point. And easy to fix. Make more donuts! Please oh please oh please. So here's the thing, this isn't the first time I've seen a Thai restaurant/donut shop combo. I once moved to a town with only one Thai restaurant, which had only recently started operating out of a long-standing donut shop. The Thai food was very good, and the donut holes that sometimes appeared with the check were delightfully random. They made and sold donuts all day long, well after every other shop in town had shut down their ovens. Of course the other option for Carlson's is to sell Thai food during breakfast hours. So many noodle dishes already include eggs. This is too easy! As they are now, the donuts are delicious and the Thai food is pretty good, but nothing special. The Thai menu was large, but I was told that they were out of or no longer carried a number of items. I ordered basil chicken because the menu listed it as using ground meat, my preference, but it was served with sliced meat instead.
