Recently purchased a new truck from Carmax. After searching dealers and online searches I found what I wanted at a fair market price. I had no trade in. From my research they have the best out the door price with a 299.99 Doc fee. I had found these fees to be in excess of 800.00. So you have to know what to add for your out the door price at any dealer. In the first week I found some mechanical issues that I wanted addressed. The service department was first rate in communications and addressing my major issues at no charge. I would have given 5 stars but for one practice I disagree with and am having to handle myself. If a remote (key fob) was lost by the previous owner it becomes your loss. They will provide one key fob and one extra key. All new cars come standard with two fobs and in the case of the truck it is the only way to use remote start. It will most likely cost in the range of 200.00 to get a remote for my wife. This practice puzzles me because they addressed much larger problems with a smile. Ask before you sign the papers how many key fobs the vehicle has because it may have only one. I hope they change this practice, sometimes it's the small things that could easily be addressed that bother you. I would buy another Car at Carmax in Hickory. read more

The folks at the Hickory location are idiots! Do not attempt to sell a vehicle to them, as they do not know the DMV requirements for registration and titles. I was selling my car that was registered and titled in my trust, and had ALL of the legally required documents per NC statute and required by NCDMV. They declined to by it as they said I needed to show them the entire trust. Funny, Hickory Toyota had no problem buying my car and changing the title using the same exact documents I presented to Carmax. Do not go to Carmax, go to Mike Johnson's Hickory Toyota (a Carmax participant) first and save yourself time and frustration. They offer the same if not better price for your vehicle. read more

Jermey made sure that not only my Husband was comfortable with his choice, but I was comfortable as well- and I was stuck at home with our toddlers. I write this because I am very upset with the Hickory location service manager. He just called to tell me they will not be fixing my car at that location for me to take it to an auto mechanic that I trust. So, the back story is on the 19th of last month(November) I took my 2014 Jeep Compass to be fixed. Well, there was a few issues, and they requested me to come back the next week for the repairs to be completed. The repairs included coil packs, spark plugs, motor mounts and the battery terminal cables needed to be replaced as well.(spark plugs were outside of the warranty so I would have to pay for those) No problem. They did however mention I needed a new battery that there was a dead cell in mine. So, upon the replacement of that battery that same afternoon by an employee of Auto Zone, I noticed my motor cover was gone. I called CarMax Service Center, which I had just left to see why it was not placed back on my car. It would have been removed to check the coil packs/spark plugs) and they called back and stated it was not there. The motor cover was on there when I bought the car(I purchased this Jeep because of low mileage for the year which was only 30,000 at the time of purchase. when I replaced the washer fluid for the wipers a few weeks before that. I have bumped my knuckles on it when checking my oil before. I know it was there. The following week upon phone call to come by for them to take pictures of the broken motor mounts, the service manager(Wallace Foxx) called me into his office to say that my Jeep did not have a motor cover on it when I purchased it because it is a 2.0 engine. He said I must have been mistaken on what I had seen under my hood that maybe the place where I had my oil changed removed it. I called the facility where I had my oil changed and spoke with the mechanic that changed my oil and he said he would not have removed the motor cover to change the oil) I told the service manager I had just placed washer fluid into my car that it was low and I had just cleaned the dust off of it. I even sent him a picture of a 2014 Jeep Compass with a 2.0 Engine that came out of my owners manually and he said I was mistaken that I did not have one on my Jeep. He was so flippant with the way he was talking to me and his character was rude. This is my 2nd car purchase from CarMax and never in the 10 years with dealing with this company have I ever been talked down to by someone in this store. Needless to say, I have been waiting on them to call me for my service on my car and the service manager(Wallace Foxx) just called to tell me they will not be servicing my car at that location. That he read my review concerning the store and they were a satellite store and would not be working on my car now. I requested that in writing to my email and he refused said he would not be sending that refusal to me that he was telling via phone. I purchased the CarMax care plan with the peace of knowing I could get my car worked on with peace of mind. Have visited this location on two separate occasions for quotes on selling two different cars. Both times the offers were either very low compared to others or in my most recent case they couldn't even decide on a price. Went to go pick up a car after having it reposesaws. I arrived 45 mins before the department I needed to see was supposed to close. Was Directed to the business department where they made a call to inventory to go look for my car. Then waited over an hour before I had to ask the lady for an update which she then called and then had to go to inventory herself to even see if my car had been found yet. We called previous to arriving to let them know that we would be coming up to pick up our vehicle. So it should have been ready to go. However I literally waited over two hours to get my car with extremely lazy and unhelpful employees. Mainly the woman I was directed to in the business department . Buyers and sellers beware: of 5 wholesale outright purchase offers on my clean highline, Carmax came in the lowest, and near 15% less than the likely auction value of my car($5,000 variance). They expressed this as a "trade in" or "outright" purchase offer. This is not what is advertised nationwide, and given my experience you should shop their purchase/trade-in offers aggressively. read more

In the past, I had horrible experiences at dealerships. CarMax was refreshingly pleasant. Our agent, Saudia, was knowledgeable, friendly, patient, and just overall excellent. I did purchase a car and could not be more pleased with my overall experience. I had a difficult situation bc of a previous purchase, but it was never an issue. absolutely do not bring your vehicle here! made the mistake of thinking my car will get fixed for a minor ac issue. not only did they get the most expensive part, i had to bring it back twice. they then got an additional part and broke my brakes! (power booster and master cylinder) they absolutely did this on purpose to get money because they saw my warranty was up when they "fixed" my ac for the third time..and guess what. my ac is still broken and now my back up camera is broken. never in my life have i had so many problems with an auto mechanic. these people are the biggest scammers on earth and i had to pay over $800 out of pocket even with their bullshit carmax extended plan taking it to an outside dealership with zeerrrrooo customer service follow up and reimbursement. beware!!!! 100% a scam! read more

Best car buying experience I've ever had. Spent four days getting the runaround from every car dealership in Hickory. And them trying to get me to buy vehicles that I didn't want. Telling me that that was all they could do with me because of my credit. Went into Carmax and was approved within 15 minutes. Test drove the car that I wanted, bought the car that I wanted, and was done in two hours they washed and cleaned it and filled the gas tank full before I left. If you visit this location, just hope you don't have a problem with your sales consultant. The general manager, Charles, will side with them over you, even if they've blatantly lied. I was even told by this Charles that my problem with the sales guy, "Sounds like a personal problem, which is none of my concern." With this having been said, I capitalized on their 5 day return policy and returned my car. I went up the street to Mike Johnson's Toyota and had a much better experience. read more

I have a friend that was interested in a car at this location well they kept making her jump though hoops to get this car we were up there from 9am till 1:30 left to get the other car she was trading 2 cars and pay cash for the rest but one of the cars was in her deceased husbands name. well she had to go to clerk of court to get some paper work for CarMax. well we came back with everything and they told her that one of the words was spelled wrong they couldn't accept it needless to say she is going somewhere else. CarMax is the absolute worst. Purchased a car from them not even two years ago. Had to take it to get repaired to them MULTIPLE times. When my car started shaking, we took it in for them to tell me they needed us to send it to another dealership. They told me that we needed a new transmission and that our warranty was up. We told CarMax we refused to spend $5000 on a new transmission, so they snuck behind the dealership's back and took it to a cheaper place. We split the cost with CarMax because that's all we could do. Once we got the car back, still had problems. Went without it for more days and once we got it back again, company that fixed the transmission said there were more problems ahead. CarMax didn't care. We traded the car in and bought a brand new one. CarMax just wants your money and then leaves you out to dry. Their cars are lemons... this is the SECOND car I purchased from them that had a ridiculous amount of issues. I will never ever tell any of my friends and family to get a car from them. Corporate is the worst ever. A bunch of cold, heartless people that don't care if you and your family spent nothing but time and effort taking their car in to get repaired!!!! read more

Take your business elsewhere. The "No-hassle" price is a great concept, but not when they undercut your trade-in. I had multiple references for my trade-in value (Edmonds, Autotrader, NADA), and even after they gave it a glowing appraisal, they only considered it "Average". Their inability to negotiate on the trade-in was insulting (And the appraiser was rude about being questioned). They make their money on your trade-in. If you need to get a vehicle out-right, you may be able to get a good deal, but leave the trade-in's out of it. read more
