Serious brake problems from salt pre-dating purchase at least 2 years. Not discovered until the first routine brake job. Cost an extra $2000 to get it in a safe condition to drive. Stonewalled in Memphis (the one on Hwy 64) and then numerous calls to Richmond home number, including from the mechanic who fixed the brakes, produced no cooperation to pay the extra amount. It was well out of their 90 day warranty window due to my daughter's health problems which required hospitalization. In no way did they inspect the brakes because they would have found the salt damage.I would go to AutoNation instead. read more

Neither of these are documented on the website and in my opinion constitute a bait and switch since you may pay to have the vehicle transported to the Carmax location only to find out later that there are extra fees. Within a couple of days, the push start had a delay, as if it didn't want to start. While driving at night on 11/8/24 the vehicle scrubbed as if it had gone into another gear, stalled and engine light came on. I called Carmax and was told by Angel the service department was closed, to call back on Monday (11/11/24) or someone will call me. Someone from service department called (wrote his name somewhere) and advised me to bring vehicle in and I will get a loaner. We did that and was given a loaner and was told we had a 100 mile a day limit. I called corporate to advise that is not fair and we had a trip planned for holiday. I was told they would allow me to drive over that limit. The key fob kept saying not detected, so we purchased batteries. It will work a day, then say the same thing. We changed batteries twice. I called Carmax on Tuesday Nov. 19 spoke with India and Derrick and was told to bring vehicle in and they will exchange it. We were given another vehicle. Within a couple of days, we got a message key fob is low. Friday 11/22 pulling in our garage the brakes are squeaking. This should not be our experience with a $40000 vehicle. Everyone we've encountered has been very nice which has kept us from really getting upset about this. But when I sit back and think about it, it's the principle of the matter and Carmax should offer some for our troubles, pay the first note or something. They have had out car so far for 10 days and we have not received on update. First note is due in Dec and we haven't enjoyed vehicle yet. I was told they would probably have it until mid December. By far one of the worst experiences I've ever had with any car dealer. I showed interest in a truck called and inquired. Sales rep said they inspected it all was good. Online add showed it had no damages. So I schedule a test drive few days before. Day comes I'm on my way there few hours out I get a call from sales rep. He says they just now noticed extensive covered up damage on the truck. So not only was the online add a complete lie but also salesman never checked it before that day. He never called me back. I caught an Uber to the store here in Tennessee on 64 after not hearing from him, when I entered he pointed at me with a folder in his hand like owe I forgot about you but I will call you at 4:30pm. Didn't give him any flack, I turned around and called another Uber for pickup and waited. He eventually called to let me know the senior team was called and they have no assistance with repairs, due to I purchased the car and no record of engine problems, there was no extended warranty and I put 30 thousand miles on the care within a year.However, they have a buy back option. I informed him this is my only means of transportatio. I ask him so ever car purchased engine goes out as flyer 30 thousand mile at carmax. I informed him that I will be contacting carmax Coorperate. Alex then states well the process is they will take you information and send you back to me very nonsensica. I told him I will take my chances. I called carmax coorparate the next day. Spoke with Nyomi she took all my information as well as had me to email her the diagnostic from Jaguar then informed me they will call in 72 hours, guess what no one called, I had to call them for them to tell me there is no option of helping me and they told me at first I had a buy back option where carmax will buy my car back then she turned around and changed it. We went in yesterday to sell our car. This business has absolutely no understanding as to how trusts function. The finance agent assisting us (I think her name is Katherine) not only had no clue about how to transact with a trust but sent us to a notary to have an already notorized document re-notorized. The purchase process was easy and went smoothly. We purchased a 2012 VW Tiguan on Valentine's Day, two days later took it to the VW dealer because the bumper didn't look right. The VW dealer told me to take it back to Carmax where I found out it had unreported frame damage from a rear end collision, the damage was obvious if inspected properly. No owners manual, transporter damaged one of the front tires, sunroof does not want to work right, safety inspection light came on 3 days after I picked it up. Called Carmax and was told your still under warrantee take it to VW dealer. Been to VW dealership three times in 10 days for issues. And still waiting for the tire to replace the one damaged in transfer by Carmax. Great car, high safety rating, VW dealership fixing all issues with a car purchased from Carmax. I would never recommend this dealership to anyone. I bought my car at the end of April 2023. I had to take it in for an alignment and to replace a bolt for the suspension. Two months later I brought it in because of a squealing sound that happened when I turned the car on. I was there for an hour before they told me they could not hear or see anything wrong with the vehicle. To bring it back if it gets worse. They also told me that I have year time frame that I'm covered since this problem was noted in their system to bring it in. I had an appointment today, hasn't even been a year, because it started shaking as well as squeaking when I turn it on. They told me they still don't hear it but later told me when they actually took things apart and I guess actually opened up the hood they diagnosed it was the serpentine belt and the tensioner. Oh but I have to pay out of pocket due to being over the 12,000 miles part of the warranty, which was never mentioned to me. Thing is, if they actually took it apart last time I brought it in and diagnosed the issue we wouldn't be here today. Alex, the manager said, "If we don't hear the problem, we aren't going to open it up to fix anything." I'm still waiting on a call back from corporate on what could be done. Tried to sell a car here,but a very poorly trained employee caused us to walkout.Our car is in a Trust, we had a copy of the trust with us. The car is registered in Shelby Co. who requires a copy of the trust in order to register and hold title in the Trust. The "acting supervisor" at 11am today had no idea how to deal with a trust.She wanted us to get tge already notarized Trust notarized again because they needed to have "original certification" .We argued that it was already certified. She insisted we get it notarized again which we told her made no sense. Nonetheless we went to a Notary who reiterated that a notary cannot notitize a document that is already notarized..in fact it is illegal to do so. Back to Carmax we go to talk to Ms. Incompetent. We asked for a real supervisor which was not apparently available. We explained that she is asking for the impossible and in fact she asking us to attempt to alter a document that is on file with the Shelby County Clerks office. She began backing away mumbled something about trying to find an answer. After 10 minutes of watching her stare at a computer in the middle ofvthe room with some other person we left. Carmax wasted our time and money we were done. Hit CARVANA up uploaded documents including Trust paperwork..no problems with anything BECAUSE THEY KNOW HOW TO HANDLE THEIR BUSINESS!! As a side note I sold a vehicle to a Carmax in a Trust and they fully understood how to process the paperwork. Doesn't Carmax have a Trust policy?? Buying a car was a fantastic experience. But the follow-up, post-purchase experience wasn't as great. I needed to purchase a second car for work and after several unsuccessful private sale experiences, I decided to head over to CarMax. I chose a car online and placed a hold, was contacted by a sales rep, and was fully taken care of when I arrived to test drive the vehicle. It was a good of a car purchase experience as you can have. Sales rep was knowledgeable, friendly and very informative. It's always a bit uncomfortable spending so much money but he made me feel at ease with details of what exactly I was buying and various options that made me feel better about shelling out what is a very large purchase for me. After the sale, I got the keys and literally, after I pulled the vehicle off the lot, the "Service Vehicle Soon" (ie., "check engine") light came on. I contacted the sales rep who said he'd get Service to contact me Monday (car was purchased Saturday). I never received a call from Service so I followed up and they said they couldn't see the vehicle and I'd have to make an appointment and drop the car off. I tried to explain that I "just bought the car" and only waited this long based on the sales rep telling me he'd have Service follow up. Otherwise I would've just take the car back in the same day. I was able to make an appointment but not without having to rearrange my schedule. My advice to CarMax: If a customer who just bought a vehicle says that "something is wrong" with the car, take the few minutes and check it out. In my case, it would've only take a few minutes to check the code the "Service Vehicle Soon" code. If it was a quick fix, fix it and I'm off as a happy customer, raving to others of my experience. PROS: Car purchase experience (online resource, putting vehicle "on hold", in-store experience, financing). Buying a car at CarMax, I was impressed with the way I was treated as a customer. CONS: Post-sale follow up. I indicated a problem immediately after pulling out of the lot (minutes after my purchase) and I was disappointed with the lack of follow up or priority. SUMMARY: This is my second car purchased from CarMax (different locations). Overall my experience has been positive. I also had issues with the first vehicle I purchased (years ago) but CarMax did end up fixing all the issues but only because of their 30 day guarantee. I would buy a vehicle from CarMax in the future but there is still room for them to improve their level of customer service, specifically for new customers. Repeat customers is where businesses make money and you want to make sure that customers walk away happy. read more

This company is a total joke! I ordered a $50k car that was listed with several options and features. Once the car arrived, my family realized many of the clearly advertised features were not present. We went back to the location to explain this car didn't have several of the clearly website advertised options, and was told not to worry "we will make it right". So, I won't go into the extremities "I can if needed", but they quickly helped us find a replacement that 'hopefully' was as described. Finally the replacement arrives, and now they cannot give it to us because they 'lost/don't have' the title and they cannot transfer the replacement 'slightly less expensive' vehicle. Now we are told to wait 'an undefined amount of time' while they search for the 'lost title'. So they sold me a $50k Lexus with many advertised options not present in the vehicle, the front window was chip from the inside dangerously so, and the windows were tinted on top of the factory tint so dark that you couldn't see 'even during the day'. New car comes, lost title; call center, transferred, told they needed 72 hours to 'clean the car' to finally find out they didn't have a title to sell THEIR CAR, and now I'm just waiting and waiting. 1:07 'hour and 7 minutes on hold' was told we will work on it without any clear definition of time available 'we are working on it'. Keep in mind that this car was paid for in cash! No financing, just straight $47,xxx whatever money. WHAT A JOKE!!! read more

Their paperwork is defective or missing and, along with processing procedures, could void any manufacturer warranty. Their shipping tracking is zero. So a shipped vehicle could arrive at ANY time. The purchase was smooth and they "sold" us on the ease of it all along with the multi point check on the car and their service they can give with the extended warranty. I called today and was needless to say EXTREMELY disappointed in the customer service lady in the service dept. She acted like I was a bother. I explained that we literally just bought the car and did she have any idea how frustrating it is that we are first time buyer and the engine light is on. First, I know these are used cars, mostly fleet/rental so they have had a tough life but the least you could do is clean the interiors. The cars I looked at were filthy bordering on nasty. The whole process took about one hour and there was no haggling and no pressure. The staff was professional, courteous and knowledgeable. They made sure I knew what I needed to know before driving off the lot in regards to operation of my new vehicle. I also got a great car for slightly under blue-book price. You get a free car fax report, a free recall notice report, and they make sure you are comfortable with the car before you buy. I'm only giving this experience two stars because the sales person I worked with was awful (Bill Rogers). But my husband and I love the vehicle we purchased. I have purchased/sold vehicles here in the past and have never had a negative experience. However, today during our appointment to purchase a vehicle the sales person Bill acted like he didn't want to help us at all. He was smacking his gum in his mouth, very short in his responses, and threw our paperwork and ID cards at us multiple times. I had to ask him to stop throwing things across the table at us and to please hand things to us respectfully. I complained to Abu the sales manager and after he spoke with Bill the transaction went a lot smoother. But Christ did we feel like we were not welcome. Sales person was great. The check engine light came on the day we drove it home. The 2016 ford explorer sport sat in their shop for 2 weeks before they changed an O2 sensor. The check engine light came on the day we drove it home again. We went back to return the car and they almost didn't want to honor the 5 day trial period even though the car was in our possession for 24 hours. Then they couldn't cut us a check for our down payment. It has to be mailed to us. The worst customer service management team ever! They didn't care one way or the other. I paid to have a Cadillac transported from another state to CarMax in Memphis Tn. I was told the Cadillac never came in/ so I settled for another one they had on the lot. I still haven't been refunded for the one that never arrived. The CarMax Manager Chris Lawson, said to expected my refund/ I never got it. I left him two messages that have not been returned as of 08/23/17. The car I purchased after one rain the car wax on it spotted up bad/ they tried to wash it and it still looks awful. The side panel on the car seat falls off/ when I adjust the seat. I left the car in repair for a whole day/ and it still falls off. Two things Carmax needs to do is give me my refund back for a car that never arrived/ or locate the car I really wanted and take this one back! We were looking for a truck to replace one being given to our son that is going off to college in the fall. On a Saturday evening we were assisted by Derreck at first whom helped us locate a vehicle that we liked online at the Memphis lot Carmax site. He pulled it up for us and we went onto a test drive. The truck was everything we had wanted and we started the process for it. While doing this we had decided to pick it up within 3 days due to my work schedule. The wife and I talked about this truck for those couple days and got cold feet. We called Derreck and told him that we weren't quite ready yet. New vehicle process always freaks us out. He said when we are ready to find one again, don't hesitate to get ahold of him. Fast forward to yesterday. We went to another lot here in the same area and found more that somewhat interests us but not 100%. Some had features that we wanted but not all of them in the same truck. We left that lots and decided to give CarMax a try again. Immediately walking in we tried to locate Derreck to continue our search. They checked and he was not scheduled to work that day so we were assisted by another salesman Cedric Hildreth. We had explain to him about the whole dealing before and we walked out to the lot to see what they had. Looking at the row of trucks which some that we had liked, the ones that we had liked were either on hold or already had been sold. Walking past a what I had thought to be a cream colored truck with people looking at it for a test drive, it didn't catch my eye at first. Going back to look at it is when I looked past the color and found that it had every feature that we had wanted. The color of the truck is actually a White Pearlescent with beige/brown interior and dark wood grain accent panels and the more I looked at it more I was really liking how elegant it looked. I hate wood grain normally but this truck's dark wood grain was pretty neat. With all the features of the truck we told him that we'd like to take it on a test drive. He went in a grabbed the plates and that when we saw Derreck walking those people back to the truck to test drive it and that it is possibly being sold to them. While standing there they said they would be back later today but didn't put anything down nor did they test drive it. That was good enough motivation for me to move on the truck pending the drive outcome. Derrick approached us and knew we had liked it. Since it was not on hold nor a deposit taken, we informed him that it was most likely going home with us. This truck had it all...loaded! Test drive complete with Cedric and we were very happy with it. Back to the lot we go and completed the purchase. They explain all the paperwork and walk you through everything. They do offer service warranties through CarMax which was a nice offer. They did not try to slap us last minute with any hidden charges like other dealers have in the past such as paint protection, glass etching or other bull. Was very cut and dry. They had it cleaned and ready for us within the hour. Very easy to do business with CarMax. While some have bad experiences, this was one of our best. Thank you to Derreck and Cedric for helping us!
