We were looking for a truck to replace one being given to our son that is going off to college in the fall. On a Saturday evening we were assisted by Derreck at first whom helped us locate a vehicle that we liked online at the Memphis lot Carmax site. He pulled it up for us and we went onto a test drive. The truck was everything we had wanted and we started the process for it. While doing this we had decided to pick it up within 3 days due to my work schedule. The wife and I talked about this truck for those couple days and got cold feet. We called Derreck and told him that we weren't quite ready yet. New vehicle process always freaks us out. He said when we are ready to find one again, don't hesitate to get ahold of him. Fast forward to yesterday. We went to another lot here in the same area and found more that somewhat interests us but not 100%. Some had features that we wanted but not all of them in the same truck. We left that lots and decided to give CarMax a try again. Immediately walking in we tried to locate Derreck to continue our search. They checked and he was not scheduled to work that day so we were assisted by another salesman Cedric Hildreth. We had explain to him about the whole dealing before and we walked out to the lot to see what they had. Looking at the row of trucks which some that we had liked, the ones that we had liked were either on hold or already had been sold. Walking past a what I had thought to be a cream colored truck with people looking at it for a test drive, it didn't catch my eye at first. Going back to look at it is when I looked past the color and found that it had every feature that we had wanted. The color of the truck is actually a White Pearlescent with beige/brown interior and dark wood grain accent panels and the more I looked at it more I was really liking how elegant it looked. I hate wood grain normally but this truck's dark wood grain was pretty neat. With all the features of the truck we told him that we'd like to take it on a test drive. He went in a grabbed the plates and that when we saw Derreck walking those people back to the truck to test drive it and that it is possibly being sold to them. While standing there they said they would be back later today but didn't put anything down nor did they test drive it. That was good enough motivation for me to move on the truck pending the drive outcome. Derrick approached us and knew we had liked it. Since it was not on hold nor a deposit taken, we informed him that it was most likely going home with us. This truck had it all...loaded! Test drive complete with Cedric and we were very happy with it. Back to the lot we go and completed the purchase. They explain all the paperwork and walk you through everything. They do offer service warranties through CarMax which was a nice offer. They did not try to slap us last minute with any hidden charges like other dealers have in the past such as paint protection, glass etching or other bull. Was very cut and dry. They had it cleaned and ready for us within the hour. Very easy to do business with CarMax. While some have bad experiences, this was one of our best. Thank you to Derreck and Cedric for helping us! I purchased a Santa Fe Sport at the end of 2015 and had a fantastic experience. Our salesperson that day was Dustin Tyler, and he was awesome. We outgrew the Santa Fe a little earlier than anticipated, so we decided to trade it in for a minivan. Dustin was unavailable when we went back, so we ended up working with Johnathon A. Smith. He was a nice guy, helpful, and eager. After several emails back and forth (in November), Johnathan thought he'd found the perfect van for us. The CarMax website and app showed that it had everything I wanted, so we went to test drive it on Black Friday. After being there for 4 hours, we finally signed the papers. It was a long process (longer than the last time), the paperwork didn't print right, Johnathon entered something wrong, etc. FINALLY we went outside to see the big yellow bow on my van and Johnathon tells me he just checked and it doesn't have a power lift gate. This was one of my "musts" since I have a toddler and a baby on the way, and he knew that. I left in tears. The following Monday Maurice (sales manager) called and asked what happened. I told him and he said we could return it and find another one at another CarMax and they would have it brought in. He said we could drive the first van until the new van arrived (this is why I gave them 2 stars instead of 0), because we had already sold our Santa Fe back to CarMax and couldn't get it back. He and Johnathon sent me 20 vans to look at. I chose one in California. They double checked that it had everything I wanted. So we started the waiting process. The week before Christmas my van came in. Johnathon called to let me know it was "ready." We arranged to go see it and everything looked fine. We again started the process of purchasing it. But wait - they couldn't do it as an exchange. They had to cancel my original loan (which wasn't through CarMax) and we had to get a new loan. The interest rate went up 0.3% so my payment went up $42/month (even though the new van was only $1,000 more). They apologized but nothing could be done. My only other option was to not buy it, but then I'd be right back to where I was before - with no vehicle. We reluctantly went ahead with the purchase. It took 3.5 hours - again! There is no reason it should take that long to purchase a vehicle, especially when you aren't haggling over the price. We finally went outside to get in our van. It had been washed (it was still wet), but the inside hadn't been touched. Why did Johnathon call me days earlier and tell me it was "ready" when the inside hadn't been touched since it came all the way from California? The headliner was dirty, there was grease on the ceiling, dirt all inside the sliding doors, smudges and dust on the dashboard, etc. We left with it filthy because we'd already spent so long there and I was ready to go home. The next week I spoke with Johnathon and he set up for me to get it cleaned. I went to CarMax at the time I told him I'd be there. The woman in the service department (I didn't catch her name) was rude and acted like this was so unusual that she wasn't sure they could help me. I texted Johnathon and he gave me the manager's name to tell her. The manager came and took care of it. He apologized that it hadn't been done before we left. I got the MaxCare warranty, but I DREAD having to use it. The service department is slow and no one seems to know what is going on. I won't go back to CarMax to buy a vehicle again. This was a nightmare. Johnathon tried so hard to make me happy, and I appreciate that, but it was just one thing after another. I hope they can improve their customer service experience. read more

We were under the impression the car was not wrecked long enough for us to buy the car and have it leak on the third day of having it. With the 7 day return and warranty to fix any problems that occur, they said this car still fits their criteria to sell as it is covered in rust under floor mats. Then they tell us it will take two weeks to get to, putting it past our 7 day return. They don't care if your car has problems and they will cover it up as long as they can until you pass the 7 day return. No one should pay that kind of money for a leaking car that smells like mold and mildew on the third day. Overall horrible experience. Returned the car and got my money back. Don't waste your time here if you're looking for something reliable. read more

*Really long post* End of November! Infiniti Q50 2015 30k miles! Great price and comes with the whole shabang! I find it online get a hold do the pre-qualification and get it transferred and all! Now I got to CarMax to finish my paper work after I told the man have it all pulled up bc I know what warranty I want an all! I've been thru the car buying steps before! Get there it's a 3 hour process! The very next day the fog light go out and service light comes on! It's the holidays so I'm like I'll take it bad bf the 7day grace period! The day after that they call me to bring the car in talking bout a glinch in the system! Ok cool! Life happened so week and a half pass I go back! They take the car literally and tell me they no longer wanna do business with me bc I basically stole the car‍! How did I steal a car I have signed documents too?! I was 38 hot at this point then they tell me they gone mail my down payment! Now I'm bout ready to slap flip and some more! They got that lil funky car back and they most definitely gave me the cash in my hand before I left! I will never do business with the CarMax in Memphis ever again! Drove 45 mins. To get car appraised. Had an appointment. When I arrived they told me he took on another customer before me and that I needed to cancel my appt and schedule for another day. When I called and spoke to the manager they insured me that I'd get fitted in that day and it was their fault he would get me taken care of. No one ever called me back. No one ever helped me on the lot. I will never go back and definitely telling the guys who are looking for vehicles to never shop here. read more

My salesperson, Shatina, was absolutely awful. She seemed aggravated that I was taking my time and wanted be sure about what vehicle I wanted. She actually told me she didn't get paid to test drive cars and I felt rushed into making a huge decision. If I didn't need a car so desperately I would've walked out right then and there. Overall, it was not a good car buying experience. Before I drove off the lot I noticed two tires on the vehicle were damaged. I would not recommend anyone buy a vehicle here. My salesman was Roy and I was closed by Tara BOTH were Fantastic! First, I bought my 5th car, a Jeep. Never had been to a Carmax and Had no idea how EASY it is! You walk in pick a car off the lot or you can have one shipped as I did from Huntsville. Once it arrived I came in picked it up and on my way. There is no Sales Manager, NO finance Manager. Even if the vehicle is coming from nashville, birmingham etc. you better make sure it didn't originally come from the north and rusted out from harsh winters and conditions. Also, if they replace two tires due to specs and leave two others on there, don't purchase two more tires at your own cost even if you just want four fresh tires to drive your newly purchased car away because if within the 5 days return you decide to return it (in my case rust from undercarriage and engine from New Jersey, shipped from Nashville) you will not get your money back for the ones you purchased. They told me I chose to buy those. I said who would drive off with two new and two worn out tires. They didn't care and did not work with me. So I basically bought a stranger two tires. $466.00 loss and no car. I couldn't even find another car to work it out with them because they all showed to be owned by fleet companies up north. Don't be fooled by smiles and pretty body and interior because there might be a rust monster under it and in the engine. "the way car buying should be" NNNNNOOOOOTTT! If there was a negative star rating, I'd select it but since there's not I'll have to stick with 1 star. I purchased a vehicle that had under 6K miles from CarMax on Hwy 64 in Memphis, TN less than 1 year ago. I purchased the highest level extended service plan possible, I think it's called the Platinum package. The windshield split in half while the car was sitting in my driveway. Nothing hit the windshield at all. No neighborhood kids were outside playing either, as this happened early in the morning. I called the dealership this morning and was told that glass is not covered after 30 days on any vehicle purchased, no matter what level extended warranty/insurance plan is purchased. I even asked if they would pay for the repair/replacement of the windshield if the glass was faulty, but they still stuck to their "30 day" line. I am VERY disappointed at the lack of customer service or willingness to stand behind their vehicles. read more

This is the third dealership car I've purchased. This is the first one where I felt very comfortable after the purchase. I've been weary of carmax for a long time now but after an unfortunate day at a dealership up the street I wandered over (see other dealership review) . After getting the value of our trade in I went home and did a LOT of research. Turns out carmax is essentially the Walmart of used car dealerships. They buy used in bulk, mostly from rental companies or lease vehicles from dealerships. The car we got was leased to one person and later found license plates for a disabled american veteran inside. I like that they have a no haggle policy. The price listed is the price you get. I like that we knew beforehand what we were getting into. Everything was straight forward. I also found out that the salespeople get commission per sale, not on a percentage of a sale. So they could car less if they sell you a ten thousand dollar car or a fifty thousand dollar car. They are just trying to get you into what you want or need. The offer they gave for my car was a bit under Kelley Blue Book but not by much. The vehicle we purchased was right at Kelley Blue Book. So i dont feel i was taken advantage of in any way. So kudos to Matt Smith for helping us out and to Toby for finalizing it the day we picked it up read more

This time our salesperson was Alex M., an enthusiastic young woman with a can-do attitude and a desire to help. Within a week of buying the car, there appeared to be an oil leak, so I called to schedule service. They got me in quickly and gave me a loaner; much more than I had expected. Alex was sick the day I went to pick up my car, but she texted me in the morning, and referred me to another young woman who was equally helpful and efficient. I purchased my auto in March, 2019. My car gets a 5 star rating; the company as a whole gets a 5 star rating; the sales person barely gets a 1 star rating. He was the worst. I had already put a hold put on the car I bought when I went to the car lot. Therefore, I pretty much knew it was what I wanted. However, there was only one other car on the lot that I wanted to test drive. I had an appointment at 1:00 pm with the salesman. All I wanted to do was test drive 2 cars and I had the money to pay cash, which I had already told the salesman. He kept leaving me sitting at the kiosk and disappearing - I had no idea why and neither did he explain. A couple of times I had to ask another employee to go find him. The experience was terrible and that guy needs to be fired. All I wanted to do was to test drive 2 cars which I immediately told him, and pay cash for the car, and leave. This whole experience took all afternoon. I have no idea why! Almost all of my family members have bought from Carmax many times, but I never had. They all highly recommended Carmax to me as their sales people were great. I really could not believe this guy. I was able to show up find the cars I wanted to test drive and by 8 pm tonight Marty had me out the door and rolling. I highly recommend ! Committed dealer fraud. Car was advertised and sold to us promising it had lane departure warning, heated seats, auto cruise control, and other features and once we got it home realized they lied. When we asked for a partial refund they only offered $400 for $7,000 worth of missing features. I had a service appointment for a part to be detailed (drove two hours to get to the location) and once I got there they said they couldn't do my appointment anymore because their detail team was about to go home at 2pm. That's ridiculous. Now I've been trying to call for two weeks and not a single department will pick up the phone besides the business department which said they would have someone contact me and they never did. The worst service I've ever had. I've bought many cars from CarMax before but this will be the last. This location used to be great but has gone down in the past years. I found the exact car I wanted. And I mean EXACT car. The price was fantastic, the low mileage was fantastic, and the purchasing process was fantastic. They paid me way more than I thought I would get for my car. It had 217,000 miles on it. Bought a car from them 2 years ago. We bought a 5 yr extended warranty. Usually don't buy this as it is a cash cow for the dealer only. Was told they could fix our car at their dealership service department, but in the event they couldn't, I was assured they would send it to the shop that could. With us having a loaner car while our car was in the shop. We've had it in twice before for a radiator fan issue and they did nothing to fix it, only telling us that's usual for this car. Now it has quit on the side of the Memphis expressway loop to be towed home. We took it back only to find this time we weren't going to get a loaner car. A few days later they called us to say they couldn't fix the problem this time either. It would have to be transported to the Nashville Smart dealer at a cost to us of $650. And this to see if our warranty would even cover the failure. I refused that. So far they still have our car after 3 weeks with no end in site. Buy from these crooks at your own risk. Look at all the complaints on Facebook, BBB, and other sites. Then google Maxcare (the company they contract the extended warranty) and see all the problems they have caused. If you look at all the good reviews here, they are about the sale. That part might be fine. But with the expensive extended warranty, I don't find any good reviews about that! Anybody see where it took Carmax 3 days to respond to this? That's why after 3 weeks they still haven't fixed my car. They do too much commenting. I have a book on Facebook! After 4 weeks Carmax isn't going to honor their warranty. I'm going to get the car soon and handle it myself. Again if you want to buy a car from Carmax that's your decision. If you pay for the extended warranty I've got another option for you - go to your backyard and set $3000 on fire. You will get the same results. read more

I bought a used car from this location back in April '14 and I had a very comfortable, no-pressure experience. Although the lot in Memphis is adequate I couldn't find what I was looking for and was in desperate need of a new vehicle. I ended up trading in my old car for a fair price, but probably could have gotten more through selling privately. The transfer service I used to bring a car in from a lot in Kentucky was easy and straightforward, I even got to talk to someone on the lot and ask questions about the car. It took about 2 weeks to transfer which was longer than I was hoping for such a short distance, but the salesperson kept me updated every step of the way. All the fees, taxes, and payments were clearly explained and the finance rep was friendly and let me ask all sorts of questions which made me feel comfortable in signing the paper work. However, the real award goes to their service department. I do quiet a bit of my own maintenance and repairs, but I would not hesitate to leave my vehicle with this service team. I experienced a few problems shortly after buying the car and their service team went above and beyond to ensure my problems were solved in a timely manner. So while test driving, we discovered the battery needed to be replaced, which was done before I even signed my the papers...somehow in that process the front window was cracked and I nearly didn't notice before I left the parking lot. No worries tho! They took responsibility and set me up for an appointment to replace the entire windshield and gave me loaner, no questions asked. There was also a problem with the wireless key fob and receiver; as they guarantee two sets of keys they replaced both key fobs, and the receiver which would have cost me several hundred dollars, all for free and without hesitation. From personal research I think Carmax charges a premium for used cars when compared to other dealers, but also from experience I would gladly pay the slightly higher cost to have a competent team behind my purchase. Also the ability to transfer a car from nearly any corner of the country, with relatively little cost can quickly expand the inventory of anyone's search for their next car. read more

BUYER BEWARE!!!!! I don't want to give them any stars!!!! CarMax Memphis TN, I hate to say it is a joke! IF you DON'T want to be kept waiting don't even start by buying a vehicle From CM in Memphis. It probably the same everywhere there is a Car Max. I know now I'm not the only unhappy customer! All I keep getting from them when I asked them when will I get my Ram 1500 back is let me check, or I'll let you know when I find something out. SAD and FRUSTRATING as it is TO ME, it doesn't seem to bother them at the Memphis store or Corporate in VA. Nice people, that have been trained well to answer the customer's complaints with kind words that mean nothing at all. But DON'T EXPECT SERVICE AFTER THE SALE......it ain't gonna happen. Wednesday will make a week that they've had my Vehicle if I don't get it back before then. Oh, it's at the Dodge Dealer because it is a Manufacturer Warranty item.....really, CM said I had a 30 day warranty from them, and I purchased an additional warranty, but now I'M BEING HELD HOSTAGE by the Dodge Dealer because it's a manufacturer's warranty ITEM? I would like to say it had everything to do with the level of ignorance shown when you know there's an issue with the vehicle that was sold to you. Immediately after purchasing the vehicle the entire truck cab would shake horribly going over a speed bump. I had to repeatedly take the vehicle in for repairs, and all they did was replace one tire. After the warranty expired and I took it to them for the same thing, that's when the mechanic confessed to me while riding with me, the shocks were bad. When I told the service manager something needed to be done about it, he called the mechanic and a few others in a huddle, and without the mechanic, they came back to me and said it was a tire issue. I had all 4 tires replaced, at my expense this time, and after a few months, the problem resurfaced. At this time Maxcare said that the shocks weren't covered by the warranty as they were maintenance issues. Believe me when I say, it is JUST THIS LOCATION! My sister purchased one in Gallatin and Jackson and had 0 issues from start to finish! read more

This is the second vehicle I've purchased from Carmax this year. The prices are awesome however, they lack in a few other areas. I live in Mississippi, I purchased the cars in Memphis. The first time, the Business Office representative told us, "Oh, you may have to pay $20-$39 additional on your tags because our system can't calculate an exact price for out of state tags." Ok, but we ended up paying $200+. I called the Business office to inquire about this, no answer. A few weeks ago, we purchased another car. This time we were more prepared, armed with our lease. Still not sufficient to prove Mississippi address. Ok, what about the insurance documents...still not enough. So by the time we finish everything, the store is closing. They bring my husbands car around and place the bow on it, but they only washed the outside of the car. The inside was very ran over. There were the remains of cleaning products on the doors. The back window was dirty on the inside. So we had to have the car detailed thoroughly. read more
