My sales representative Rebekah Poteet and the sales manager Robert at the Carmax located at 2501 Powell avenue in Nashville ruined my entire car buying experience. I was scheduled for an appointment that according to Rebekah was already booked by another person. Therefore I was put to the side and forced to wait long durations of time. Rebekah ran my credit 4x for no reason, was reluctant to answer my questions or assist me, and did not input the correct finance amount on my contract. It unfortunately got worse after I made my car purchase. The car had visible damage to the back/trunk area, was dirty not clean/detailed inside with car parts missing, the key fobs were mangled and falling apart, there were random loose items belonging to someone else inside of the car, and the car had maintenance service issues the very next day after purchase. Pat the service manager was supposed to assist in repairing these issues yet he failed to follow through with this promise. I'm so disappointed that I received such poor customer service and will NEVER purchase a vehicle from Carmax again. read more

THAT repair they paid, but it has needed $$$ repairs every 3 months since then. A whole year of this! Was only there for roughly 45 minutes to an hour signing the final paperwork and then I drove off the lot with a 2017 Chevrolet Equinox LT with only 19k miles on it. I bought a car from this location a few months back. When i bought it i was told that the oil and filter had been changed and the fluids topped off. 5,000 miles later I go to change my oil and filter and discover that both the drain plug and oil filter housing have been tightened to such an extent that it took a breaker bar to remove the drain plug. What's worse, even with the oil filter wrench made specifically for my make and model vehicle, the oil filter housing snapped before coming loose whatsoever. This left a hole in the housing so now I can't even just replace the oil because it will all just leak out. So now my car won't run, and the entire housing has to be replaced. EDIT: I had some difficulty getting ahold of anyone who could help me initially, but when i did they were extremely friendly and helpful. They offered to tow the car, repair it, and offer an alternate vehicle while mine was in the shop! read more

DON'T GO HERE TO SELL YOUR CAR The representative that made my appointment was not very responsive. She also confused my appointment with someone else's and then confirmed my appointment for the correct day, but the wrong time. I had to call the location before it all got straightened out. When I got to CARMAX I was greeted by a very bored looking man who was prepared to dismiss me to the waiting area but another representative interceded and got my data entered for the appraisal. After waiting for a while -- but not too long -- I was greeted with an absolute joke! of an estimate. They wanted to give me $8k for a $14k car that came from CARMAX. I had expected a low offer but this was well below my most reasonable explanations. CARMAX may be a great place to buy cars, but it is not a good place to sell them. read more

This was my first experience with CarMax anywhere. Mike at the front check-in desk was polite and pleasant, so the first impression was very good. Since the sales associate who was helping me prior to my actual visit was unavailable (though we talked in the phone about two hours earlier), Mike asked us to go ahead and check out the vehicle I got it transferred from Georgia. He pointed towards the general direction of car type were kept in the lot. We located the car very easily and looked around it and came back inside to escape from some heat and humidity. It must have been another 20 minutes until finally received a phone call to let me know someone was ready to help me. Actually, the sales associate was outside looking for us thinking that we were still out there. We went on for a test drive. Then we started to work on our paperwork to purchase the vehicle. Computer system (Internet access) was painfully slow to download anything. I couldn't get the most important paper, so I couldn't finalize the sale. I had to come back a week later to complete my purchase. We returned with great anticipation to finalize the sale. I had everything I needed this time. Jack Goodner was very nice. He's the one who helped me get the car I wanted as I searched through Internet. No pressure whatsoever as we progressed. It was very pleasant process finalizing the sale with him. Also, everything went smooth in the business office. We snapped some shots before we pulled out the lot. Over all it was a very user-friendly experience. Meet your sales associate, look at cars, find the one you like, secure financing, sign your papers and you are out. ( I needed the extra time and it took me three trips), but could have easily been done in a couple of hrs. Ray was my associate and walked me through the procedure in an open, transparent and honest way. After purchasing many cars in my lifetime this was the easiest and least painful by far. As someone mentioned above, they could have detailed the car a little better, but not enough to take off a star. read more

They regularly made my experience unpleasant, right up to my last visit where I sold them the Mustang back. They don't work to understand your needs, they don't smile, and they leave you with the impression that they'd prefer not to help you. They seem to exert the minimum amount of effort necessary to do their jobs. Other locations are probably better than this one, but I won't be taking that chance. This is for the service department - the purchase process was 5 star! We purchased a 2012 Civic sedan about 3 years ago along with the extended warranty. Sometime within the last several months the blower fan started behaving badly. At high speed it had a noticeable muffled roar. It eventually stopped, but so did the highest fan speed and the next speed down diminished. Eventually it only had 3 speeds out of 6 I think. I took it to them instead of paying the $50 deductible to take to where I choose (Honda dealership) - big mistake. On max air, full fan - your hair should be blowing in the wind - as it did when we first got the car. I go through the process - missing work time, rental car, shuttle rides, asking a co-worker to take me back to the dealership to get the rental (they only drop off, not pick up) as well sales tax on a week of car rental (yeah). They run their diagnostics - mmmm hmmm - and decide it needs a new compressor, some kind of relay for the fan motor, etc. etc...They kept it for about a week - part on back order. Fortunately it was "fixed" within that week otherwise I would have to pay additional full daily cost on the rental. Guess what - other than gaining a couple of more fan speeds - all in the lower range - it still was not pushing the cool air hard enough to adequately cool the interior in the summer months. So, I take it back and TRY to explain that the temp at the vent source WAS NOT the issue. "Well we have let it run for thirty minutes and the ambient temp and temp at the vents were well within what they should be." Of course the "ambient" temp was taken inside a climate controlled garage in the shade. "But you shouldn't have to hold your hand 2" from the vent in order to feel any cool air!" Paraphrase, but basically - "There is nothing more that we can do." A couple of weeks ago the fan started that same muffled roar and - just last night - the fan didn't come on for the heat until we hit a bump in the road. So now - we have to pay the $50 deductible at a Honda dealership, plus sales tax again on how ever many days rental it takes. The warranty company basically paid $1800 for nothing...and we are once again inconvenienced! Take my advice - pay the $50... read more

Then Santos a salesman at Carmax called me to follow up about the appointment and then again to confirm. Upon arrival I parked and waited for Santos inside. I gave him my ID and he got the appraisal process started. You can see the progress of your appraisal on the tv screen while you wait. I saw when the appraisal was in progress and when it finished. Then Santos returned and walked me through the findings on my vehicle. They did an inspection of the inside and outside of my car and pulled up the service and accident history. Based on the state of my car and the mileage I was offered a fair price that was $600 more than Carvana offered so I'm definitely selling to Carmax. Thank you for an easy process! read more

Went and traded in my car for a new Nissan Sentra and I have had nothing but trouble since I bought and I called them wanting to trade it back in barely missed my 30 days they don't wanna do anything about it but fix my brakes again for the second time on a 2019 with only 20 thousand miles. I was amazed to see the overall rating for this Carmax to be only three stars. I can tell you I would have rated them ten stars if I could. I took in a van to sell outright. I was helped by Jordan Slay. I explained that my aunt had passed and we were liquidating her belongings. He appraised my vehicle with KBB at $14,615 and presented me an offer for $15,000. Buying a car is one of my most dreaded experiences. I loathe car salesman tactics and absolutely detest negotiating with them. If that applies to you and you are okay with paying more to avoid them, CarMax might be a good option for you. Pros - Vast inventory that you can browse online. They have not only local cars but you can see the inventory of every CarMax across the nation. This is particular useful if like me you are looking for a very specific/rare model with a very specific set of options. - No haggling. Some might see this as a negative. Personally I don't have the patience for it and simply feel it is not worth my time. The price CarMax offers you for your vehicle is good whether you just want to sell or trade in. The price of their cars is also set it stone and not negotiable. It's about as straightforward as you can get. - Salesmen aren't pushy. There is no pressure to buy. That is the complete opposite of a normal car lot where the salesmen will say just about anything to stop you from leaving. Cons Only one but it is a really big one: You aren't getting the best deal. You can probably get a lot more for your trade-in if you sell privately. This is true of just about any car dealer but even more so here as their offers are low. There isn't any wiggle room on the sale price either. That extra cost is a premium you pay for the luxury of not having to go through all the normal negotiation BS. All in all I had an OK experience here which is leaps and bounds above any other car purchase I've ever been through. read more

We recently purchased our Mercedes ML350 from Carmax. The experience was easy.... we got approved for financing over the phone, nothing required as far as documentation other than proof of insurance, our rate was GREAT and nothing down. Their prices are very comparable and their service was extraordinary. We were fortunate enough to have Cameron as our sales person. He was friendly, not pushy at all and very easy going. He took us on a test drive of the car we already knew we wanted and offered to even meet us at a different Carmax (where another vehicle we were interested in was) so we didn't have to do our financing all over again. We were in and out of Carmax in an hour... it was one of the easiest experiences I have ever had a car dealership and I appreciated their no pressure approach. When we're in the market to buy another vehicle, I will absolutely visit Carmax again. We do have to take our car in for some minor repair issues, but we've been told it was no problem and they'd take care of all of it. My only reason for not giving it 5 stars is that when we called to bring our car in (and we'll have to leave it) they can't guarantee that we'll get a loaner car AND they don't have wifi, so we would have to find someone to drive there with us and then back home and then drive us back to the dealership and that is a serious inconvenience for us. Just under 4 years ago I bought my Mazda from Carmax at 100 Oaks. After shopping around at several other dealers, practically being dragged from car to car, just to get me to buy, this was a completely different experience. As they say in their ads, no pressure. They let me look the car over, take it for a test drive (with a Texas Drivers License) and even detailed it when I picked it up all without pestering me about price. Honestly, I could not have had a better experience. When the time comes for me to get my next car, you can bet I will be returning to Car Max to see what they have and can give me for my Mazda. Moreover, if you want anymore proof of how great Car Max is. They are the only business outside of universities that I have applied for jobs at, that have sent me a mailed (not e-mailed) letter thanking me for my application. In a world where most retailers do not even care how desperately you need a job, and make you fill out lengthy online questionnaires and applications for a position, this says volumes about how they run their business. read more

I was pretty skeptical about CarMax "The way car buying should be". I've had quite a few cars and always bought them through a traditional dealer. I was thinking that their "no haggle" pricing was kind of lame considering if I could haggle I might be able to get a better price on the vehicle I wanted. I reluctantly decided to go to CarMax to look at a new "fuel efficient" vehicle. When I got there, I was immediately impressed at the customer service. No gaggle of salespeople smoking outside, waiting like vultures for their next customer. They greeted me as I entered the building and immediately took me to the type of vehicle that I was interested in. I test drove the vehicle, which was a pretty typical experience. Liked the vehicle, found the perfect one online, and decided to order one from a different lot. The vehicle was coming from florida and it arrived in 4 days! Impressive! The vehicle was nice with a few fixes which CarMax complimentarily fixed for me (scrapes on trim of dash and missing seat handle in backseat). The part I loved best about CarMax was how long it actually took me to buy the car. I think I was in and out in less than an hour. Drove the car off the lot that day. Scheduled the fixes to the vehicle and they were fixed within 2 days to perfection. Also, kudos to the maintenance staff. Friendly, fast, and convenient. Great place to buy a vehicle!! -=What makes them successful=- No haggle pricing is take it or leave it. You know exactly what you are buying and for what price. Vehicle appraisal process (for trade in) took 20 minutes and a VERY fair price. Sales associates make standard commission regardless of the type and price of vehicle. Everyone who works here is impolite and unprofessional. I wasn't greeted by any one; just stared at like I didn't belong there. numerous times I would greet the workers saying "how y'all doing?" And no one ever spoke back. I was on the car lot for 45 mins and NO ONE asked me if I needed help, but at least 6 people walked or drove past me and just stared without speaking. Ginnie was warm and welcoming, eager to answer our questions and explain the process for us. We appreciated the flexibility in being able to get dinner while waiting for a quote. I wish I could remember our sales person's name (Teresa maybe?), but she was patient with us as we deliberated car choices and test drove 4 different vehicles. I went to look at cars one Saturday and met with Nivar Emin. He was easy-going and provided excellent help. I went back the following Tuesday and met with his brother Rijar Emin who processed the buy for me. He was just as polite and great of a salesperson as Nivar. I couldn't have asked for a better duo to work with and am so happy I went in when I did. I searched and searched for the same vehicle I liked online and at other dealerships, and though Carmax has their no-haggling prices, I ended up getting a better deal there than I would have anywhere else. This about service after the sale. I've been trading at this Carmax since 1999 on average about every year or two. My salesman, Jack Goodner, of 10 or 15 years has been the best. He is knowledgeable, patient and thorough. All the cars I've got have been like new as a result of their as advertised certification process. At Christmas I purchased a 2016 MKX that was shipped in from another state after paying the $149 transfer fee. Immediately we noticed 2 obviously broken interior pieces, tires that were all worn unevenly and the suspension was unstable with unsatisfying noises coming from the rear. I was told they would order and replace the tires, fix anything else that was wrong and give me a loaner car similar to my car. I took the car because I had a lot of trouble finding an MKX with the colors I wanted that was fully loaded. At home I discovered the cabin and engine air filters were filthy. I went ahead & replaced those. Also I went to check the oil and I literally had to put my foot on the bumper to get the corroded dip stick to come out. After checking several times to be sure, I had to add a quart of oil. I also noticed all the other cars I've purchased always had a small sticker on the driver's window showing Carmax's 125 point certification but this one didn't. Obviously this car was skipped over for even the most basic of checks. On 1/3/20 the tires came in & I took it to the service dept 8AM. At 12:30 they told me they discovered 2 wheels were bent and they would have to order new ones and would be in 1/8. They gave me a small basic SUV type vehicle as a loaner. On 1/8 they told me the wheels won't be in till 1/20. I was disappointed but accepted the delay. I ask for a small favor. Because I leave for work at 4AM and there's always frost this time of year, my main feature I always make sure I have is remote start. So, I ask if they possibly could swap out the loaner for one with that feature. I was told they don't promise features, just a loaner. I feel like with all the mis-steps they've taken with this car and me being a customer of over 20 years, a small request like this would be a no-brainer. The service dept is way too cavalier with their customer service. SO, if after the sale customer service is important to you, go to another dealer. read more

My husband and I both test drove it, got my car appraised for trade in, and left with our new car about 2.5 hours. CarMax's whole thing is no negotiating but we found the value of the car we bought excellent and we got about twice what we expected for my trade-in. Josh was the best. He walked us through the entire process and was very knowledgeable.
