Great facility overall, but for families who generate a fair amount of laundry due to lots of activities, the fact that the suites don't have washers and dryers seems ridiculous. I've spent half my day at the laundromat because we ran out of clean socks and underwear and I refuse to pay 3 per sock. How hard would it be to put a doubles decker washer and dryer? Rooms are nice and spacious and views of the golf course, rolling hills and sunset fantastic, but I can only give it 3 stars because I'm sitting here at the gross laundromat down the street, doing my laundry next to a nice man who brought his things in trash bags. read more

Really enjoying our stay at this fabulous resort. The highlights have been laying by the adults only pool, the incredible soaking tub on the patio, the service and the activities! Absolutely LOVED the sunset hike with Rachel. Beautiful tour of the property and with incredible views. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the area and made the experience. Appreciate all the people who have helped us here and the regular and easy to use shuttle service. Before we came I read some of the reviews about the service and was hesitant but honestly we have had the opposite experience. Everyone here has been wonderful. read more

I just called this hotel FOUR different times trying to make a reservation, and the person answering the phone could not seem to connect me to the reservationist. I have been transferred to the spa, guest concierge, someone's voicemail, etc... Seriously?? Even those people couldn't seem to redirect me to a reservationist. We wanted to give this place another chance but wow... I don't think so. They are not on their game at all. I even asked the person who answered the phone to connect me to her manager so I could explain what was happening, and even that didn't happen. Not impressed. I hope a manager reads this and makes some changes. They just lost some customers who were excited to make a reservation. read more

My family and I spent five days at Carmel Valley Ranch. There was plenty of activities for the adults including our two kids that are 5 yo and 2 yo. Highlights of our trip and resort: Bee tour is educational and hands-on. We enjoyed it as much (ok, maybe even more) than our 5 year old. John gives an excellent tour and we learned a lot. Our son is still talking about it three days later. Property-It is gorgeus and very well maintained. There are many fantastic places to walk around the property. Our son loved all the tree swings throughout the grounds. Staff-The men working in the valet area were friendly and the wait was never long for a pick up. Facilities-Since the pool was on the colder side, we didn't spend that much time in the water. We played a lot of bocce ball, basketball and tennis. S'mores was a great way to end every night. Areas for improvement: Restaurant at the Lodge. We ate at the restaurant 7-8 times and other than breakfast, which was a buffet so wait staff wasn't as essential, and one dinner, the service is beyond horrible. I almost feel like the restaurant is run by a completely different management than the rest of the hotel. We had to wait over an hour for lunch one day, never asked if we wanted a refill on any of our drinks, literally had to ask a few different servers for our check and wait another 20 minutes to get the check. The people at the table next to ours ended up leaving because she waited so long for her check. The other issue I have with the restaurant is their reservation policy. Every night we were there, they said they were full. While I do believe guests made reservations, it was obvious to me that they have MANY no shows. One night we there and the server said we had to wait an hour. I noticed that more than 3/4 of the restaurant was empty so I asked her if we could possibly take a table if someone doesn't show up. She replied that they are expecting the 70 diners within the next few minutes. We ended up getting a table within a few minutes and when we left an hour later, I would say at least 40-50% of the tables were still empty. I think the restaurant management needs to revamp their reservation policy and most importantly, their service. The food is fine but not worth the poor service. read more

My husband and I had high expectations for our quick weekend away and although we loved the resort - pool, restaurant, hiking trails - we were EXTREMELY disappointed with our room. The room was exactly as pictured on the website so you can imagine how excited and relieved we were as you never known when booking online. The problem is the, albeit beautiful, but very noisy hardwood hallway that runs all the way down the length of the room (from front door to bedroom). This hallway combined with what seemed to be very thin walls allowed you to hear your neighbors walking around at all hours of the day and night. Although we knew we were staying at a resort that was family friendly, we did not expect to hear our neighbors and in partiular little kides that found the long hallway extremely fun to run up and down at early morning hours. We of course do not blame the families that were next to us as their children should be able to make some noise and do there thing, but what we couldn't believe was that in a place so nice and for the price of the rooms, that there was very little sound proofing - NOT REALLY RELAXING. We had to be moved from our first room as we did not want to interfere with our neighbors weekend. The problem was that they moved us to another room next to another family and the same noise disturbance happend on our second morning at the resort. For all of the money spent at the resort you would think that they could make the rooms more enjoyable...we also had lights and other things in our room that didn't work properly. Unfortunately, given the issues with the room we don't plan on returing to the resort which is unfortunate because everything else was spot on. I do have to say that the staff was very accomodating, but at a certain point the accomodation didn't help anymore. read more

Overall, my family had a lovely weekend at the resort. The property is beautiful. The rooms are large and luxurious. We enjoyed ourselves. If I was reviewing this as a romantic getaway for adults, I would give it 4 stars. However, for a family I gave it 3 stars because there are some strange things about the resort that we found off-putting and are giving us second thoughts about whether we'd want to stay here again with our young teens or try something new. PROS: - Fabulous suites: We've stayed in a fair number of 5 star resorts, and this was hands down the largest, nicest suite we've stayed in. We're two adults with two young teen kids and there was plenty of room to relax in our suite. It had a desk area, a full living room with fireplace/flat screen TV, large bathroom, full bedroom with fireplace/flat screen TV/great deck for relaxing in the sun under the trees. I understand all the rooms are suites. - Property: beautiful with the lavender and golf course surrounded by the hills - Bee Experience: was fantastic! By far the best thing we did here. Don't miss this - Firepit with schmores: every night was a real highlight for the whole family - Adult "serenity pool and hot tub": are lovely with gorgeous views - Location: close to downtown Carmel and Carmel Beach CONS: - Resort layout: web site doesn't give a true picture of the resort. It's so spread out that every time we wanted to take our kids to the family pool, we had to pack all our stuff, pile in the car and drive down the hill! That was a real downer and not at all what we expected. God forbid you forget something in your hotel room and need to go back and get it when you're already down the hill at the family pool. Also, that meant our family had to split up. If one parent wanted to enjoy the adult serenity pool at the top of the hill by the main lodge, the other parent had to be a car's ride away at the bottom of the hill with the kids at the River Ranch family pool. Strange and impractical design choice. - Shuttle vans: are available if you don't want to drive your own car, but they are sporadic; we waited as long as 15 minutes to catch one. As a result, most people seem to drive their cars around the resort. Strange way to vacation if you're trying to relax. - Serenity Pool age is higher than other top resorts where we've stayed: the resort dictates 16 yrs or older to sit by the serenity pool or use the serenity hot tub. My young teen kids would've been happier peacefully reading their books next to a quiet pool than having to be with the families with young babies, toddlers, and children at the family pool. - Serenity Pool: not really that serene because it's next to the main building with people checking in/out, and it's next to the restaurant patio where anyone (families or adults) can dine. Again, strange design/layout. - River Ranch Family pool/hot tub: was loud and chaotic, which was not pleasant for my husband or me. But our kids (young teens) were considered too young for the serenity pool at the lodge. Also, parents were bringing their babies and toddlers (in swimmies and diapers) into the hot tub. Sorry, but that's unsanitary and inappropriate. Resort needed stronger guidelines here. - Cafe at the RiverRanch family pool: had about 5 covered tables on the patio for lunch so we couldn't find anywhere to sit. Seriously? Salads for lunch were fine. Coffee was really not good. Strange they have so much land but chose to make the cafe patio so small. - Deck chairs by the pool were totally full when we arrived at 2pm on Saturday. Really? We paid $600 a night for a suite and there is nowhere to sit by theRiver Ranch pool? Ridiculous. - Dinner at the lodge: very expensive for a just OK meal. You can get a much tastier meal for half the price in downtown Carmel. - Gigantic bathroom: our spacious bathroom had very little counter space. When you add up a man's, woman's and teen girl's toiletries and makeup we didn't have anywhere to set all this. Also, not enough towel bars that were easily accessible (not behind a tub or something). Outlets for blow dryer hard to use behind the glass shelf. Seems like bathroom was designed by a man who didn't get a woman to test it out with her hair appliances or makeup spread out. - Resort, as others have mentioned, seems a bit "manufactured": prefer a more natural and easy to navigate setting that doesn't require us to get in our car to enjoy the facilities. Did we like it a lot? Yes. Did we love it? No. read more

Yes, the Carmel Valley Ranch Resort is expensive; but it's worth it. Huge rooms, beautiful facilities, gorgeous setting, kid/dog friendly, and amazingly good service. By way of example, after we asked if they had any contact lens solution (my wife forgot to bring hers), rather than simply saying "no," one of the managers drove down to the nearby Safeway and delivered the solution to our unit, unprompted. Bottom line: this place is a splurge, but it's a great one. read more

Extremely overpriced resort. Rooms are all top notch with huge layouts and state of the art finishes, Lutron lighting, linens etc. However, if you're over 55 bring plenty of tip $$ to have the staff shuttle you around. Rooms are spread out on an extremely hilly layout. The best part of the property is that they ship all the kids to one kid/family pool area at the extreme end of the resort The topper for the trip was the Bar. We are Foodies so we didn't order dinner here, only enjoyed late night cocktails. The Staff, including the bar tenders were slow as molasses. Even on a Wednesday night when the place was empty, it took us 15 min to order two, standard California rip off Manhattans, saturated in sweet vermouth. The highlight was watching a family unit ( adult son, wife, Mommasan) with a baby stroller in the dining room. In the stroller was the clueless family's uhm, baby...a frickin mop of a dog! That's right! A dog eating in the dining room. This place advertises as a "dog friendly" place. But even this move violates CA law as it clearly was not a "help dog" or therapy animal. In fact, the little bastard was getting kisses from the wife btw bites to eat, all at the dining table!! Everytime the waiter brought a dish to the table the dog shrieked out loud right from his designer stroller at the table! The Staff clearly didn't have the balls to tell the barely English speaking family to keep their lil "child" in their suite! My wife and I are golfers. The Staff at the course was very friendly. Unfortunately, no one told the local members (the golf course is semi-private mixing preferred tee times with resort guests' rounds). Our Friday morning round was typical, almost 3 hours for nine holes! Two local members were so pissed playing behind at least three guest groups, that they rudely went off on me. The only thing stopping me from sticking my 9 iron up their a.s, was they were all so old and angry I could only think about the frickin dog from the previous night to keep my sense of humor! Nevertheless, this is why golf is dying in the US. Overbooked tee times at peak hour, jamming the course to increase revenue resulting in a huge disappointment for all! I thoroughly enjoyed teeing off from the back tees as we literally waited at least 25 min on each hole on the back nine. We left at hole 13 as the round was going to take 6 hours! Staff and Marshalls need to get a clue. They didn't even apologize when we dropped our cart off! If I ever return again, I will bring my prized dog and treat his Royal a.s to all the resort amenities! I will play the Preserve or MPCC with my kick-ass Uber rich golf buds. My dog, of course, will enjoy a massage, eco friendly human food, and hopefully chase one of the old, rude, local golf members all over the beautiful course! 500 Acres, wow! Beautiful lavender fields. Rolling hills. My boyfriend and I loved sitting by the pool and getting pampered with the soft luxurious towels. There was a neat and soft towel coverlet that covered the cushy lawn chair. I swam several laps in the heated pool made with salt-water and enjoyed the heavenly infinity hot tub overlooking the landscape with oak trees. Our condo had a living room and door to the bedroom, so it really felt like we had our own little home. Everything seemed so new. We had our own private balcony, although it was strange to see an ashtray on a table out there. I've stayed in many 5 star places and this is definitely 5 star. Staff was extremely friendly and really tended to you. I love the golf cart (or van) ride back & forth from the condo to the Lodge restaurant. Food there was fabulous. I had the Day Boat Sea Scallop & Corn "Chowder" and it was to die for. I also ordered a "garden vegetable" side dish that was really special with green and yellow color carrots. They were so fresh and cooked perfectly for me. I think the vegetables came from their vegetable garden. We loved the fireplace in the condo as well as in the restaurant. We also loved making smores at the firepit by the pool. read more

i booked a room for a weekend trip for my fiancee for his birthday. they messed up on my reservation so i got a free upgrade. the room we got was really really big. i think they remodeled it recently. the bed was huge with comfy pillows and we loved the fireplace in the master bedroom. there is firewood stacked outside the room and we had a fire going all night long which was really nice. the tub was huge and big enough for two. the room kinda felt like a two bedroom condo that the resort bought and converted into a suite. it was that big. next time we come to carmel we will stay here again. read more

Friendly, fast and accomodating service! Great checkin, knowledgeable and prompt concierge, friendly drivers of the complientary van/golf cart, hardworking maids who did our nightly sofabeds and gave us extra towels, great golf lessons for my kids, pool staff who put towels on my chair for me, and the great wait staff at the restaurant! My family of two older parents, me and my husband, and my 3 kids all had a great time as a result! Plus, this just a gorgeous property! We swam a lot with the kids in the kid pool, little one loved the splashing sprinklers area, the swings were a big hit and we enjoyed the bee keeping experience. Golf was great for big people and little ones. Very convenient to downtown Carmel. The restaurant is excellent quality and value. The suites were large and comfortable for a family of two adults and two kids per suite. Sheets were very nice and comfortable. Quality bath products. Gorgeous grown up pool and hot tub. Checked in about 10:30 pm Monday and have never stayed before. There are two small desks as you walk in that look like concierge desks. There was a woman sitting at one of the desks and she looked at us as we wheeled our luggage past her. When we realized we were now in the bar area we circled back and asked the woman where we check in.....she said right here......she was very nice , but why did she allow us to walk right past her with our luggage without saying anything. That was not that big of a deal. We then were directed outside to have the bellman Dave take us to our rooms on a golf cart. He asked for our bags and we politely said we will handle our bags and put them on the cart. At that point he became short and rude. He drove us to our rooms at a high rate of speed.....did not ever leave the cart when he got us to our rooms ( he did not even to point out which rooms we were in) and then he sped off without saying anything. Got Into my room and it was nice ,but the fireplace did not work in the master, I could get over that too, but not the bellman. So beautiful grounds, decent rooms that needed some repair, but 0 on the people score. That"s not what I would expect out of a place like this. read more

I had a wonderful 1 night stay at the Carmel Valley Ranch on 1/17/2015. Beautiful setting with many greeneries, fresh air and connecting with nature. I was there to attend a wedding, so I didn't get a chance to try out the restaurants. Both the banquet food and brunch were fresh, tasty and well-presented. All the staff members were courteous, always with smiles and eager to help. Due to the time constraints, I didn't get to try the spas and other amenties. However, the guest suite was a delightful place to be in, relaxing in the spacious sitting room, the bedroom and bathroom are both luxurious, Pleasant views with trees and natural landscapes from every window. My husband already suggested that we will return in the future for our anniversary:)) read more

We just completed an incredible four day stay at Carmel Valley Ranch. The accommodations were first class - huge suite, queen size pull out couch for the kids, large bathroom and private wrap around balcony. The Ranch is beautiful, peaceful and impeccably maintained with so much to offer families from daily hikes, workout classes, swimming, tennis, golf and a relaxing spa to kids camps, "The Bee Experience" and nightly s'mores. There was so much to do that ideas such as the Monterey Aquarium, Big Sur and others will have to wait until a future trip. The food in the restaurant was excellent. The staff and service were outstanding. We didn't want to leave and can't wait until our next trip back. read more

My husband and I enjoyed our 2 night stay at Carmel Valley Ranch a few weeks ago. The setting is beautiful with rolling hills and lots of trees, and the golf course. The service was excellent and the lodge is beautiful! They had just started the renovations of the pro shop the day we golfed. The Pete Dye course has been renovated a bit but it is beautiful and well maintained. The back nine is awesome as it rises in elevation and has some spectacular views. Our room was beautiful with 2 fireplaces, large bath and a wrap around porch. We needed more time to explore this gem, next time for sure we will hike and use the work out facility! read more

We were spending the weekend at Carmel Valley Ranch, and decided to have dinner the first night at the Lodge restaurant on the property. We had a superb meal of small plates suggested by Chef Tim Wood off the menu, augmented by his own amuse bouche of a grilled scallop starter, each course paired with a half glass of a local wine. The room is beautiful, the service attentive and friendly and very knowledgeable (sommelier is great), but the food is simply outstanding. We cancelled our reservation for the next evening and booked a second meal @ the Lodge. That says it all. Oh, and the Ranch itself is beautiful, the rooms spacious and very well appointed, and the grounds immaculate. We'll be back for sure! read more

We ended up staying two nights at Carmel Valley ranch and it was worth every penny! The room we stayed in was incredible. First impression upon walk in could not have been better! There was a mini fridge with a cheese platter, a keurig, a fireplace and a t.v. just in the living area. The bedroom was huge, with an additional t.v. and fireplace and a goregous wrap around deck with a view. The bathroom had a gorgeous soaking tub and a glass shower as well as comfy robes. We dined at the ranch's restaurant for dinner and lunch and the food and service were great! Truffle fries are a must! We spent the day lounging by the pool and spa that overlooks the golf course, and took a beautiful walk through the vineyard. The front desk staff were very gracious and kind, we felt very much at home. The bulldog mascot Roxy was a nice touch also. We will reccomend Carmel Valley Ranch to anyone traveling to California, and we cant wait to go back ourselves. Special thanks to Thomas for making everything possible! read more

Setting and amenities 4, service hardly 2 stars. Have been here few times in the past and again in June 2018. Huge difference in service quality, I asked if something changed, I was told only the restaurant was upgraded. We did not get the room key until 7:30pm. We had to change the dinner reservation because of this and was expecting some collaboration between the hotel front desk person and the restaurant front desk. Lots of confusion and time waste, we were not treated well at this time. I am not generally interested in pre fabricated "yes sir, understand sir" responses and in my previous experience at this place, there seem to always be a obnoxious-AH-VIP-wannabe guest category that do not threat the staff well, which is not my problem but for a place that positions itself as a family friendly place with great service I was expecting genuine care. No ETA on the room key, no place to eat, here you go $50 credit and have some appetizers. Standing there with a 5yo and a pregnant wife, we went out by the pool to relax a bit. Finally sat, waiter was in the good mood and we were like finally someone with a smile. Food is ok, definitely way overpriced for what it is, simply doesn't make any sense. Breakfast, the same. Given the situation and the outcome, free night or a free dinner is what it would have made sense to some degree. That $50 credit did not even make in the final bill. I forgot couple of things in the room and had to call 4 times to make someone act. Finally both items were found, only to get one of them by the time I drove back to Carmel. Again no explanations, nothing. I am used to service where staff calls back and offers to ship things. While I was there I asked for the bill, I was told I would get the bill in the next day or so, 7 days later still nothing so I asked. Half an hour of buzzing around, the front desk appeared with the bill. Of course the $50 credit was not there. So I thought to myself, I am not letting this one go, let's have some fun here and ask about that. I got such a bad look and multiple questions on how, why and when I got that credit. So it got amusing at this point. Got the updated bill, still need to wait for the credit card to post it, sat in my car and drove happily away. We honestly did not feel welcomed here. What ever the reasons are this was not the way to be treated, regardless of room price. The staff has a lot to learn about hospitality. Factoring the price in, I am not comfortable coming back soon. The previous times we were here rooms were priced much less and the food and the service was better. read more

Our experience was not that great. The fireplace was broken in our room as well as the phone and the furnace. The furnace had two settings - eith blasting air and never turning off or completely off. It was freezing and rainy all weekend. Also the restaurant was sub par. The timing from the kitchen eas not goo....we got our mediocre salads immediately and then waited 40 minutes after we were done with the salad for our entree. I ordered creme brûlée and it was discusting! It was runny and the top sugar layer was soggy not crunchy. Very disappointing. We will not return to this hotel. read more

We just returned from a 10 day trip to Calilfornia and staying at the Carmel Valley Ranch for two nights was one of the highlights. We traveled with our three boys ages 8, 6 & 4 and they all loved the resort with its rambling hills, abundant wildlife and great pool. We saw deer outside of of room every day. The food at the main lodge was great as was the food at the restaurant near the kids pool area. Yes, the kids pool area is a short ride from where the accomodations are, but this never proved to be a problem, The setting of the kids pool area is absolutely beautiful and there are endless activities for the kids. I would recommend the "Bee Experience" for kids 6 and up as well as the guided nature walk. Monterey is a short 15 minute ride away and Big Sur is 45 minutes. The Garland Suite we had was also beautifully decorated and spacious, with plenty of room for our family of 5. Overall an outstanding stay. The staff was incredible too, especially Melanie Cooke made sure we our room was well located for our kids. All said, I didn't want to leave this property, and cant wait to get back! read more

Our son, daughter and granddaughter hosted us for the weekend of my 70th birthday in one of the end unit villas halfway up the valley hillside. Wrap around deck, wild turkeys (well, ahem, kinda) roam the property and lend special charm. As do the ubiquitous deer. And the views of the valley and the golf course below, was terrific. Two bedroom unit with living room and two fireplaces rounded out one of the most special weekends I ever spent anywere. Imepeccable service to boot. read more

Gorgeous setting, amazingly large, spacious yet WARM rooms. 24 hour access to pools and jacuzzi. Fast internet connection. Good location for visiting downtown Carmel, Monterey and the like. The food at the lodge was generally good. Breakfast was sort of outlandishly overpriced, but convenient. Common spaces are warm and nicely furnished. Guests were mostly families with small children and middle-aged couples which made it sort of boring, socially, but that's really not the point of staying at a place like this. read more

I've been lucky enough to stay at Carmel Valley Ranch twice for a total of 3 nights. Very quiet and relaxing place with very nice amenities and staff. The main pool area is comfortable and next to the restaurant so poolside drinks are a must. My boyfriend and I had dinner outside by the pool one night and breakfast there twice and found all food to be very good. I would love to visit here again and would certainly recommend this place to anyone visiting the area. read more

My husband and I spent Christmas at Carmel Valley Ranch and enjoyed many features of the place. The spa and service there were excellent. I asked if I could just hang out in the steam room one afternoon (where there is an outdoor, semi-private balcony) and they were terrific about letting me do that. I read all afternoon, trading off for the steam room from time to time. One of the most relaxing times I've had. The hiking trails are great, and, as much as I prefer to be by the ocean, I have to say being in Carmel Valley is a very close second. The only drawback was the dining room service. I won't go into detail here, but I was surprised at what seemed like a disorganized wait staff. We waited 40 minutes (!) one evening for them to take our order. There were other things as well, but I'll spare you the details. Aside from the problems around food service, this place is delightful and luxurious as a weekend getaway. Comments: Played here as part of an NCGA two day tournament. This is a nice course that wanders through houses and condos. You must place your shots on this course. Greens are decent size and roll well. There are some elevation changes that can be tricky. Play it in the morning as the wind tends to pick up in the afternoon. It can be foggy on the coast and be sunny and nice just a few miles away, both times it was exactly the case. read more

This review is mostly to mention the fantastic new horseback riding activity recently added to options on site. We stayed 3 months ago as a work incentive trip & loved the property. The rooms are huge, staff all polite, pool & hot tub beautiful, etc. Just returned this weekend for another won trip & brought our 10 & 12 year old girls to experience the amazing hiking trails, s'mores & garden. I was treated to an activity & chose the 90 min riding trip & it was breathtaking, fun & the eye candy is... ahem... definitely a bonus. Rianna & Cody are adorable & the many horses on site are all beautiful, healthy & well trained. The outdoor activities director, (Andy) was our guide on both hiking trips & is positive and energetic. I'd give 5 stars as there were couple small things amiss in other departments, but nothing worth mentioning read more

I didn't know this place from word of mouth yet, but i sure am glad my sister told me about it. They're THE place to go to enjoy good weather, to swim, to golf, to hike, to eat well, to sleep soundly, to get good spa treatments. I loved the check-in process: decentralizing the desks is brilliant: No wait. The rooms were lovely: fireplace, balcony, huge bathroom, multiple TV, lots of food and water and wifi without extra charge. I love these things. The hiking area is super gorgeous. There are hens, horses, lavender, vineyards, people's adorable dogs. I love all that too. Oh, the real class act? NY Times delivery every morning to your door. YES ! Great service - consistently. (i'd add a little more lighting to the living room in our suite. But if that's all I saw wrong, then you guys score!) The surrounding area had good choices of additional restaurants close by.
