Very cozy hotel situated in downtown Carmel about ten minutes from The beach. My only gripe would be the hotel's pillows were kinda ridiculous. Two enormous throw pillows, and two teensy tiny regular prison pillows. It might be time for to upgrade guys, for two people on one bed it wasn't very comfortable. We recently had a very pleasant stay at the Monte Verde Inn. You are not starved for choice with accommodations in Carmel by the Sea, but our group of three seemed to be hitting a bit of a challenge. A room for three didn't seem easy to come by. Most hotels appeared to allow 3 guests in a limited number of rooms and they all came with much higher prices. The Monte Verde has a great location, it's time tested having been around for decades, it was the best of all other options. We did have to book one of their biggest and most expensive rooms. It was room 6, the Family Suite. Up a small flight of stairs, it featured a large main bedroom and bathroom, plus a window lined extension room that featured a day bed, bistro table and chairs, and a second TV. We arrived in town before the established check in time and really only expected to have our bags held until the appointed hour. But the woman at the desk joyfully said she had just checked on our room and that it was ready and that she would check us in! The room was very comfortable. Everyone got their own bed, there was plenty of space to be had everywhere for all our stuff. An extra supply of towels were in easy reach under the sink. A downside was the ceiling fan--it was needed for air circulation but creates a strobe effect when the ceiling lights are on as well. Another was that the only mirror in the entirety of the suite was the one above the sink in the bathroom. Breakfast is included in the form of a delivered basket--English muffin, bagels, yogurt, assorted fresh fruit, and orange juice. It arrives around 8 am and, while that did allow us some extra time to do things to get ready for the day, we were pretty hungry by the time it arrived. Coffee and tea can be made in your guest room. For the fresh brewed version, it is available in the lobby also around 8 am. Overall, the stay was comfortable, quiet and we would return again. read more

A cute little BnB in Carmel super close to ocean avenue with all the shops and restaurants. Ours was a standard queen room with a small table and chairs. Very pretty and quaint decor. Service was good and very clean. A bit small for my taste and I imagine several rooms in this area are small too. But they have good parking easily accessible. It's a smaller boutique hotel with only a few rooms, it fits in with the older cottage style decor. Free WiFi, complementary sherry in the room, coffee maker, refrigerator, robes and breakfast served in a basked. We really enjoyed this charming inn. We stayed for 2 nights. If you are looking for a place to just sleep and shower that is clean and comfortable, but most of your time will be spent outside of the room doing activities in the town, this is the place to be. Pros (in no particular order): Friendly staff. We were checking in after hours and they called to let us know they were closing and what the checkin procedures would be. The instructions were easy to understand. The cleaning crew were also very friendly and welcoming. Great location. Most places are within an 8-minute walk. Close to the beach and very close to all the restaurants. We never drove anywhere. Breakfast basket. They give you a complimentary breakfast basket that has orange juice, English muffin, bagel, boiled eggs, yogurt, and fruits. It was a perfect breakfast after a morning run by the ocean. Clean room. Despite being an older place, everything was very clean. Good in-room amenities. There is a large refrigerator, robes, the heater was working very well, and great internet. They also give you a complimentary bottle of alcohol. Parking. They have a small lot where we were able to park right in front of the room. There were vacancies so I'm not sure if parking ever becomes an issue when they are at capacity. Cons: - The room is a bit older, so it can use some renovations. - No out-of-the-room amenities. read more

My girlfriend and I stayed a weekend for our anniversary. The staff was one of the most courteous, friendly and engaging hotel staff that I've ever met. I would highly recommend staying in the queen rooms with the shared balcony. We were lucky enough to have the whole balcony to ourseves, but if you are traveling with another couple or friends, make sure to get the two rooms with the balcony. The hotel drops off a free breakfast basket every morning. They're dog friendly (for a reasonable fee, of course). There's free sherry in the room. LOVE LOVE LOVED our quaint little room here in Carmel, CA. I think we had the most prime spot. About .37 miles to the beach, .50 miles from the southern tail of the scenic 17 mile drive, next door to awesome bakeries, restaurants, and gift shops. I couldn't have been happier with our check-in clerk and extremely knowledgeable concierge, Randy. Everything Randy told us to do and see, we did! Man was he an expert. We arrived in the evening after dark on a Wednesday and were able to check into Room #1, right on the corner of Monte Verde Street and Ocean Ave. After wonderful conversation about cats and Siamese cats, Randy walked us across the street to our room. He opened the door and mediated the temperature for us (like in the movies). There's a cute little table in every room that has complimentary chocolate and brandy in a crystal decanter. We tried the brandy but that isn't our choice of libation, still a nice little touch. Prices here were very reasonable compared to downtown Napa, where we had stayed the night before. After a good night sleep and a sunny jog on the beach in the morning, we were gifted a wired picnic basket containing the continental breakfast on the doorstep promptly at 8:30 a.m. It was loaded with OJ in small mason jars, fruit, a warm bagel and English muffin, jam, butter, cream cheese, two hard boiled eggs, and Yoplait yogurt. What a treat! We checked out of our room around 11:30 then enjoyed the loveliest little city in all of California. After a wonderful day roaming the streets and hanging out on the beach we decided to stay another night in Carmel. Considering staying at other Inn's in the neighborhood and searching other options, we just knew we HAD to go back to the Monte Verde Inn. We were so happy to see Randy again and being so cool he gave us more advice on where to go and what to do in Big Sur the next day. Shout out to this awesome, clean, cozy Inn. For a guy in advertising, I've traveled far and wide the world over. The rooms at the Monte Verde are not the largest. Yet what it lacks in square footage, it makes up for in true Jack and the Beanstalk-esque fairy tale charm. Lovely cozy little room with French doors open to a central brick-covered courtyard with soothing stone fountain and even a large tree canopy complete with resident pair of merry blue birds... Private patio just off our room where I sat nightly after dinner with a glass of wine. Marc truly made us feel like family - like he genuinely relished the opportunity to host our stay. From the moment we checked in and the fresh baked cookie, which had my 7 year old's eyes and attention the minute we set foot in the registration area. Quaint wine and cheese reception where the merry is positively infectious, just like a "Singapore Airline" or "Seabourn" experience, but in a genuine not-to-wrangle-more-tip kind of way. The breakfast basket delivered to our door in the morning was delightful, much like Christmas morning and the abundant gift opening...that I looked forward to as a child. The location was spectacular. 3 blocks to a host of Michelin-quality restaurants and 4 to the famed white sands of Carmel Beach. Kudos, Monte Verde Inn. And thank you for a Grimm's Tale experience that was nothing short of magic. read more

Such a cute spot! Loved the breakfast delivery. It's very simple, but such a nice touch. Our trip entailed 2 pieces of fruit, 2 yogurts, a bagel, English muffin, and 2 orange juices. The staff was wonderful. The rooms were clean. The room comes with a coffee pot but we love to take advantage of local coffee shops. There was one just around the corner, Carmel Valley Roasting Co. And It was such ease to walk down to the beach from the hotel room. Will definitely be staying here when we come back to Carmel. read more

A lot of mixed reviews on here about Monte Verde Inn. I'm so glad my experience here is 5 star. I booked a room last minute on new years Eve and was lucky enough to get a room here for the new year. I called and the receptionist was very helpful on finding a room that meet my needs. I opt in to the room that was more secluded with a private patio. I was told that it has a "peek of the ocean" view from the patio. When I got there it really WAS a peek. You can barely see the ocean, not getting frustrated or mad over it though because I'm on vacation! Plus the beach is only 4 blocks away anyways. I love how it's walking to distance to everything. Getting in the parking lot is easy, but getting out requires a little reverse maneuvering. Nothing 20 years of driving experience and a car that's equipped with a 360 camera can't handle. Stay on the street if you can't drive. The rooms are outdated but that's part of the aesthetic of Carmel-by-the-sea so don't expect the Ritz experience. I felt the maintenance crew did a really good job on the cleaning. I'm generally a little picky about cleanliness but not once did I question anything being dirty in my room during my stay here. The mattress must have gotten an updated because I felt fine in mine. I checked in at the Monte Verde Inn on March 15, 2024. I checked out six hours later because I was itching all over. The bed was way too soft and full of dust mites... I spoke to Randy at the front desk and said that I could not stay here because of the soft bed and itching. He said I would have to pay for that night because they could have given the room to someone else. I said the Inn was NOT totally booked and that is wrong to charge me. He looked at me like a deer in headlights and didn't say a word. I've disputed this charge with my credit card company. I hope no one goes through this experience. Three night stay mid-week during a heat wave. The room was cute with a private balcony with two chairs and table looking west. We could hear and feel the waves crashing on the beach a few blocks away. Like most hotels in Carmel they do not have A/C. But they provide fans which made it okay. The host was super friendly. Love, love, love that they have off-street parking. Every morning about 8:15 the young woman from the front desk brought a charming basket for breakfast which included: Toasted (and still warm) bagel and english muffin, two hard boiled eggs, fruit (bananas, apple, tangerine), Yoplait yogurt, cream cheese, jellies, salt, pepper, good eating utensils, napkins, and real china plates. The location is ideal. We took our dog to the beach every morning, which he thought was heaven on earth. Easy walking to all of the restaurants we dined at and other nice Carmel attractions. We got take-out pizza from Bicyclete one night. The rooms are small like alot of Carmel. But good value compared to other places we have stayed. We will definitely be staying there again. read more

His knowledge of the area is extensive and you won't go wrong by taking his suggestions when it comes to dinning and recreation. Randy is a true gem! Cozy, comfortable, friendly, and very clean. Quick, last minute getaway for us. Excellent check-in, welcomed by Randy with friendly guidance on parking and local faire. The room was hidden, like a cottage. Very old but quaint and inviting. Linens were by-far above average for comfort and cleanliness. While the room was quite small, the outdoor sitting area was very peaceful and comfortable; a great place to meet new friends. Much about this stay was perfect, aside from a few quirks. The adjacent Normandy Inn was just feet away from our room. We loathed the wafting cigarette smoke from neighboring patrons (gives quite a bad impression of that hotel and clientele, will be certain to not consider it in the future). Also, the neighboring housekeeping staff were quite loud and annoying. The primary issue was the plumbing on our room. It all worked well but could use some upgraded pressure regulation. When the cold water is called (likely a toilet flushing in another room), multiple times, I was near scalded in the shower and had to wait until the previous pressure resumed. Other than that, grateful for exceptionally friendly staff, responsive maid service, and overall an delightful visit! Oh, one more thing! The European breakfast delivered every morning was perfect, along with the in-room "Carmel Coffee Roasting Company" coffee. Thank you for all your hard work taking great care of us! read more

My husband and I stayed 2 nights for our first wedding anniversary. I really loved the look of the Inn.. to me it was the cutest spot ever.. I loved the patio setting, both our personal one upstairs and the "community" one downstairs. The bed was comfortable and there was plenty of lighting (which I truly appreciate!) I loved the French doors as well! It was really quaint and cozy for me. The Inn had no vacancy so I thought it was going to be noisy with people but it actually wasn't! I was comfortable the entire time I was there with my husband. The only complain I do have is we couldn't find help on Sunday to get ice. The office was open but no one was ever in there. We spotted one of the cleaning ladies cleaning a room and we had to knock on the door for her help. Also we had to ask her for towels but other than that or was really nice! For the money spent, one of the the worst stays I've ever had, although this may be largely due to having the room next to the lobby. No a/c and it got hot so we opened the windows during the day but people continually stopped to have loud conversations right outside. At night we were kept up by people returning to their cars parked on the street, again talking loudly, including the lady who announced that she needed to stop and pee next to the tree outside. The writing on our tv remote was completely rubbed off. There was an extension cord permanently in use which in my professional career would be flagged as an OSHA violation. Our faucet was crooked which just contributed to the feeling that everything about our room was old, worn, and desperately in need of an update. I could see from the bathroom into the lobby and listened while an employee from another hotel (or probably just Casa de Carmel) talked with the desk clerk and laughed about out-of-town visitors complaining about their room, since apparently you're supposed to know that hotels in Carmel are old, overpriced and kind of crappy. My wife needed to do some work on her laptop and there was not a space to do that. I think whoever is making the breakfasts is making a real effort and I appreciate that but for the price of the room it feels a little gimmicky, like an excuse to charge an extra $75/night. Let's be honest there isn't $10 worth of value in that basket. There are plenty of nicer, newer places to stay in Monterey so next time I'll stay there instead and just drive or Uber into Carmel. read more

Such a cute little B&B! Location is perfect as it's close to Ocean Ave where all the shops and restaurants are. Walking distance to the beach. Dog friendly, but any guests with dogs do have to stay on the first floor (understandably). Breakfast delivered to the door in a basket every morning (toasted bagel, English muffin, 2 hard boiled eggs, fruit, yogurt and orange juice). Even had logs in the fireplace in case it was cold enough that you wanted a fire (we did not light one as our stay was during the CZU Lightning Complex fires). There isn't much parking in their attached parking lot, though street parking isn't impossible to find. You're able to park overnight up until about 10am. read more

Positives: ======== 1) Super nice and sweet couple are the new owners of both Monte Verde Inn (and it's terrible and bitchy sister, Casa De Carmel) 2) Sherry in every room with 2 glasses, although not totally amazing, it's a nice touch. Negatives: ======== 1) There's no lobby for this hotel, or seating area for the bed & "breakfast". They bring a nice basket to your room in the morning, but I didn't like the cold toasted bagel nor the assortment of items. 2) Beware -- ensure that you are booking and staying at The Monte Verde Inn, and not the sister hotel, Casa De Carmel. The hotel's reservation system shows beautiful rooms to be booked at MV, only to have the good ol' "bait and switch", handing you over across the street at Casa De Carmel. read more

The place itself is cute and "quaint" which is code for tiny. Our room was dank with carpet that should've been changed decades ago. Here are some of the negatives. 1. Their family suite with "queen" beds, are two size full beds. 2. NO PARKING GUARANTEED! We got back from a day trip and all spots were taken except for two reserved with cones. I went in the lobby and asked RANDY at concierge if we could use those spots. He said, "no, those are reserved for the owner." I said, "so there is no guaranteed parking for our stay?" He said, "you could go find parking down the street for two hours, or you may get lucky and find one for the rest of the day." I said, "we were never told we would have to look for parking on the street" and then he said, " IT'S OKAY TO PARK, I DO IT ALL THE TIME." I replied, "parking is not the problem, it's looking for parking in a crowded downtown and not being warned before booking or at check in." THE OWNER HOLDS 2 PARKING SPOTS FOR HIMSELF AND MAKES HIS GUESTS FIND THEIR OWN PARKING?? Maybe that's because parking is hard to find?? What kind of customer service is that?? ALWAYS Love our time spent at this lovely Carmel Inn. There is one very noisy room right next to the front office but the rest are all different , Charming & exceptionally clean, also well appointed for the size they are. We also love the views from their top room called "The Condo" However it is the only 1 we've stayed in that could use a larger bed & some sprucing up. read more

I liked this little place. I got a great rate on Groupon, so the price definitely matched what we got. I wouldn't pay more than that for this room, however. It was small, as advertised and we got the one with a private balcony, but the walls are thin. The basket of breakfast was enough to get us through Point Lobos, so unless you're a power eater, it'll be enough. The bathroom was clean and the room quaint. The best part about this place is the location and Carmel is entirely responsible for that! It was a great homemade for a quick weekend away. read more

If you're are looking for a great place to stay during a trip to Carmel, the Monte Verde Inn, is a great place with reasonable prices, great amenities and an incredibly nice management/staff. The Inn serves free wine and small appetizers from 5-7 pm every night! It's a cozy and friendly place! We made the drive down to Carmel from SF on a friday afternoon and arrived around 7pm right as the happy hour was shutting down, but the manager allowed the wine and snacks to stay out for another 30 mins longer so we could have a nice glass of wine and relax after the long drive! Our room was ideal for what we needed - nothing too fancy, but cozy and clean settings with a great location only 4 blocks from the beach. We'll be back! read more

Frustrating that when I paid about $300 a night, including dog fee, just not that comfortable of a place. The location is fantastic and there are some nice touches, a little wine and cheese happy hour, and a muffin, juice, egg and yogurt brought to your room for breakfast, but those aren't enough to make me think about staying here again. I would rather go cheap or pay $400 a night, but this pricey mid-tier option is a let-down. Staff were all really nice. The basics were not good: room size too small with little or no storage place for two adults to put clothes. Uncomfortable queen size-bed, creaky and maybe old (like they are trying to save money). Small bathroom with shower that did not have adequate water pressure. The bed and the water pressure aspects could be fixed......and yet they don't because they know people will pay regardless. Next time I will pay a $100 more for a nicer place. Maybe we carry some blame for starting our reservation process too late. I just expect more for what we paid. read more

The location of this hotel could not have been any more perfect. It is close to restaurants and shops on Ocean Ave. Its a small storybook hotel with charming ambiance and character. Basket of breakfast served every morning. Clean and cozy. Only drawback is that the restroom and shower is tiny. There's barely enough room to move around. You can hear the neighbors at times if anyone speaks loudly or puts the tv volume on high. Staff super friendly and accommodating. Definitely recommend it! read more

We were given room #1 across the street from the check in counter main office, which had a window facing the street and very loud upstairs guests. Pros: close to downtown/Carmel Beach, breakfast basket, dog blankets were provided . Cons: This is more like a motel vibe than hotel, no phone and usb ports in room (so bring a charging brick!) and the door to the adjoining room was unlocked and when we arrived it could be unlocked to the next room-yikes. The walls and ceiling are THIN and we heard loud footsteps/thumps/voices for hours upstairs and next door, the shower/floor appeared unclean with hair from previous guests, and the mattress felt dated. My husband and I were taking a week vacation up the coast and were supposed to spend two nights in Carmel at the Monte Verde Inn. I have no complaints about the staff or the cleanliness. The place is definitely older and smells a little musty in the rooms, but overall it was clean and to me that's very important. My biggest complaint about this place was that the room we stayed in was so noisy it was impossible to sleep. We stayed in a room that was away from the street and on the first floor so I thought that noise wouldn't be an issue, but I was so wrong. You can hear everything that is going on in the rooms around you. If the room next to you turns on the water it sounds like there is a waterfall next to you. If the couple in the room above us got on the bed, you could hear every movement, and of course if someone was walking around upstairs you could hear every step. The noise from the other rooms went on all night. My husband and I didn't sleep at all which ruined our time in carmel. After the first night we were both so frustrated that even though we had already paid for the second night, we left. I wish I would have seen more reviews that mentioned how thin the walls are at this place because if I would have known I would not have stayed here in the first place. I wouldn't recommend this hotel if you want to relax on your vacation and you enjoy sleeping. read more

It's just okay...The location and staff are awesome; however, the rooms need serious upgrading, especially the bathrooms. The rooms are tinyyyy to begin with, and the way the bathrooms are designed, you open the door and have to close it because you can't get to the shower as it is completely blocking it. I think for the way the Inn is priced, the bathroom does not to do it justice. It is dark and cramped with very outdated fixtures/appliances. I would also recommend upgrading the bedding as it was not very comfortable and had a scratchy feeling to it. With these upgrades, the Inn would be significantly better. read more
