I have been getting my hair cut here for years, and Violeta has always been absolutely excellent. I don't even live in the neighborhood anymore; I make the trip from Astoria because I don't want anyone else cutting my hair. It's well worth the subway ride! She is very warm and kind, always asking how my family and I are doing, and just as importantly, she is a real professional when it comes to cutting hair--which, after all, is why you're coming to the barber shop in the first place. I can't really think of any negatives, to be honest. Sure, the prices have gone up here since I started coming here five years ago or so, but they've gone up everywhere, as far as I can tell (and not just at barber shops, either). Not a great experience at all, someone who didn't know what they were doing at all. I had a basic discussion with him about what kind of haircut I wanted and he didn't know even basic terms. Wanted to go in there just for a quick trim. Told the lady to only take 1/2 an inch off the top and she cut basically 2 inches off. I was shocked at how expensive the cut was 40$ for such a poor quality haircut. Definitely would not recommend if you're looking for a modern cut and I would advise to keep your money for another place. read more

For close to twenty years, one of the most carefully kept insider secrets in New York was that the best barber shop shave in the city was hidden away inside the northbound subway station at 86th Street and Lexington Avenue. There, tucked in the back of a shoe repair and watch shop, the legendary Mel held court, he of hot towels and the touch of a feather. But alas, all good things come to an end, and when the building was vacated for a new high-rise, the shop closed and Mel disappeared. Service: Mark is a phenomenal barber. He spends a great deal of time on your haircut to make sure it's perfect. They also take credit cards. Location: The barbershop is kept in impeccable shape and is in a great location. There's even a small liquor table if you want to have a drink while you wait. Mark gave my husband a cut several times, while he was interning summer 2018 in lower Manhattan. He listens, advises (if need be), and is a very skilled barber overall. Definitely a gem hidden in a large and busy metro of a city that NY is. Put in a few words, Mark's haircuts are classy and refined. It's a quality that is difficult to achieve with the newer generation of barbers. A reservation is not necessary and yes you may need to wait a few minutes despite having one, but it's well worth the wait. Note: Those that have special events that they need haircuts for, you should get one two weeks before the event because that's how long it to get to its "prime". Mark is the best in the city! The moment I found this shop, I stopped bouncing around from place to place. Mark is incredibly detailed oriented and never rushes a cut. He listens to whatever feedback you give him and is just a pleasant guy to shoot the breeze with. He's the type of guy that will talk a lot if you want to talk or simply just give you your cut - kind of depends of what your personality drives. The shop itself is very clean and a place you can tell Mark takes great pride in. While you're waiting for your cut, there is also complimentary liquor available. After a long day of work, I personally enjoy the little back massage pad he has on one of the waiting chairs. I love this little shop and hope people take care of Mark with an above average tip. I'm not entirely sure why they take reservations when upon your arrival you are forced to sit and wait in line, as if you never made a reservation. When your on a schedule because your getting married, it's rather frustrating to have to wait for the one barber to get to you. read more

The place has people who are nice and want to work with you but alas, lack competence to do a contemporary men's haircut. I went in on a Sunday and saw Violeta - very sweet and nice. I started by sharing a picture of what I wanted my hair to look like and explicitly asked if my type of hair would be able to do that and if she'd be able to cut the hair as in the picture. She said yes! Now after 20 mins of cutting hair (and I really tried to put my faith in her but def some moments when I thought this isn't going well) then she goes on to show me a work product that I was not happy with at all and neither it was remotely close to the picture I showed her. I asked her to make adjustments and she tried but the results were still really bad. At this point I've realized that Violeta has very limited knowledge and experience with cutting hair so I gave up and am currently dealing with a less than mediocre haircut. My husband gets his haircut here regularly and loves it. We took our 19 month old in, and they were fantastic. They were efficient, quick and very understanding of a little ones needs. Our sons first hair cut was at Cozy's and it was awful! Super over priced and an uneven cut. Carnegie gave him a style and Really listened to what i wanted done. I went to this barber shop because I saw it had some decent reviews and I needed a place closer to me. Boy was I in for a treat! I don't recall if I got the barbers name, but he was very kind and welcoming. It's not always the easiest being a woman and going into a barber shop, but I definitely felt comfortable. I got there at 5, I had called ahead and made an appointment. He was finishing up with a customer as he greeted me and apologized due to the fact that I had to wait. But I didn't mind! I instantly noticed his focus and precision as he went back to the customer in the chair. Shortly after, it was my turn. I got in the chair and He listened to all of my requests for my haircut as well as made polite conversation while he cut my hair. As far as masks, he wore a mask the whole time, over the nose and all. I usually get the same kind of haircut. A quiff of some sort but only a few barbers have ever been able to do it exactly how I wanted. All I had to do was show 1 picture and describe what I wanted and he went to work. I'm usually used to barbers using clippers with a high guard to shave my head down, but my guy was here to cut some hair! Instead of using clippers, he used scissors and a comb to carefully shape my hair into the exact style I wanted! I was super impressed and it was really nice to be able to relax and get a top quality haircut. When he was finished he put some extra product in my hair and styled it, to give it the exact look I was going for! I'm definitely going to be coming to this barber shop from now on! read more

I've been here several times since moving to the Upper East Side. Mark takes his time and provides an excellent haircut at reasonable prices. He takes his time (about 15 minutes) to cut my hair. Both did an amazing job, very detailed and delicate. They are both very personable and easy to get to know while you're getting your hair cut.
