It was quite busy this Monday despite it being Labor day. I got some flour and corn tortillas and grabbed it from the workers hand before it even hit the stands. They have pretty good deals on their meat (carne asada) and fruits. This can be debated but I love the fresh flour and corn tortillas that they're cranking out here daily. I was really excited to see that Carnival is offering matcha now, so I ordered the Iced Strawberry Matcha Latte from the Matcha Bar. One of the first things I notice with matcha drinks is the color, it's usually a good indicator of the quality and strength. This one was quite light and could definitely be a deeper green. Flavor wise, it mostly tasted like milk and strawberries, and the matcha was very hard to detect. I'm not sure what their current matcha-to-milk ratio is, but adding another gram or two of matcha would make a big difference and help the flavor come through more. I decided to try this location because I really love the Carnival location in National City. Unfortunately, this one just doesn't compare. While it is certainly larger, the National City location has far more authentic Hispanic food. The prepared meals here -- including the beans, Spanish rice, chicken fajitas, and steak fajitas -- were incredibly bland and lacked any real flavor. The Spanish rice tasted more like basmati rice with tomato sauce, and the refried beans were just plain beans without seasoning or depth. That said, the butcher department here is excellent, with great prices and quality cuts. I'll definitely continue coming here for the meat, but I'll avoid the prepared meals and fruit in the future. read more

*** Vegetarian Review *** This has to be one of the best supermarkets. They have all the groceries you would need, but the main attractions are the hot food and grills. You want pizza? They have it. The sign says the dough is made fresh. Itching for a gyro? They have this station too. Sushi? Yup. Deli sandwiches. Uh-huh. Craving Mexican? ¡Por supuesto! This is the first place we go when we land in San Diego because let's be honest, we don't have great Mexican food in Northern California. Walk up to the grill station and order your food fresh. Taco Tuesday is such a hit, they decided to do it again on Thursdays. 3 tacos for $6. And these tacos are legit. Double corn tortillas, warmed on the grill. The only thing I wish they had was whole beans, but their refried beans are tasty. So once your grilled tortillas come off the grill, it's basically Chipotle style. It's made right in front of your eyes. Refried beans, rice, lettuce, pico, guacamole, cheese, and they have 3 types of salsas. They throw a grilled jalapeño and a couple of lemon slices on top before they close the lid. They are delicious and if you wanted to be extra, walk over to the hot and freshly made flour tortilla station. 12 flour tortillas for $5. An incredible deal. They pack the tacos so much, it's easy to scoop out some and make more flour tacos. I can't stress enough how much you'll love this place. They have a juice section with about 10 different options. You can ask for a sample before you buy one. If you're a watermelon fan, no need to sample. It's guaranteed good. I had the banana con leche and it was really refreshing to cool down the spicy jalapeño. But the winner has to be their mango, orange, and chia seed. This is much thicker than the others and so addictive. So buy two. They make it easy because it's 50% off the second. Bottom line.
