So we got lucky enough that we stayed close by. We had heard of this place in social media posts so when we realized we were so close, we had to come in for lunch. i had a Adobada and a Cabeza taco. Both were really good. I knew my kids bought way more than they were going to be able to eat so I did not order any more. I got to taste my daughter's carne asada quesadilla and my son's buche taco. I was a little disappointed that I asked my taco guy to make sure there was pineapple in my Adobada taco but no pineapple. Still, very delicious. Loved that they had radishes and limes but my local taco places also have cucumbers, which El Gordo did not. Everyone was very happy except for my wife who said her carne asada was very "nervy". But for full disclosure, I rarely like ordering her carne asada for that reason. I would only order her a carne asada taco at a place that sells premium beef [like my local taco place in Anaheim]. One very interesting thing about this place is that you get in line for the tacos you want. I stood in line for tacos and mulitas made from Adobada or al Pastor [same thing, at least here per the man making the tacos]. My daughter got in line for the carne asada tacos and quesadillas and my other son got in line for the buche and cabeza tacos. We just kind of gave our order to the person that was standing in the right line. Then we went over and paid all together. I happened to be in line when my taco guy stopped to assemble a phone order for 27 tacos. BTW, who orders 27 tacos. Two dozen, sure. Thirty, makes sense. But 27????? So I waited a bit but the person behind me knew that there are two Adobada lines and left for the other line. If it's just you and a date/friend/wife; I am figuring that you are not going to get in more than one line [per person]. It was packed and even though it went pretty fast, it would be super inconvenient. Plus, I was the last one to get my tacos because of the large mobile order that was made before me. Overall this place is pretty good but you guys saying that this is the best taco place, PERIOD. You need to come up to Anaheim.
This place used to hit the spot after the first bite.. however, I've noticed that over the years, the food has become a little under seasoned and on the pricier side. Waited about 30 min for the Al pastor and about 5 min for the asada. Seating was also easy to find around midnight on the weekends!
Tacos El Gordo offers classic Baja California street food and is run with an efficiency that is admirable, though I left feeling a bit mixed on the overall taste. Each meat type has its own line and because I am a sucker for Adobada, I was not wavered by the very long line. And though the classic rich guacamole topping was delicious, the actual meat was dry and disappointing. The tacos de lengua, were AMAZING, with the meat cooked perfectly. My husband also loved his buche tacos. The carne asada was cooked well, though meat was under seasoned . I ordered with all toppings which unfortunately made the taco soggy. The tomato salsa might have been the culprit, so I suggest to skip on that topping or consider just sticking to cilantro and onion, with a squeeze of lime as a topping. I also ordered the Azteca and though the cactus was delicious, I would have preferred it cut into small pieces rather than long slices so that it mixed better with the carne asada. The Azteca was also soggy from the loaded toppings. I can see why Tacos El Gordo is a favorite among locals and I would be willing to try again with some modifications on my order.
I was told it gets very busy so I'm glad my family and I went when it just opened with a few parking spaces still available. Ordering was confusing at first but basically there are multiple lines so look at the menus before lining up for the exact items you want(tip is to have friends line up for various items at once and pay together at the back). Portions here are generous and the popular thing to get is the adobada with slices of pineapple! Definitely a great choice and I also got the cabeza(beef head) and lengua (beef tongue) which are my favorites. Definitely coming back again and trying the vampiros de adobada since it's a crunchy tortilla with cheese apparently!
Tacos El Gordo never disappoints. Craving for tacos and ended up here for our quick lunch. Be prepared for long line during lunch hours. Ordered out usual favorites! Taco de Tripa Taco de Lengua Taco de Cabeza Taco de Asada Tried numerous taco shops and were always ending coming back here. Highly recommended!
Adobada and chorizo tacos here are their best and will not disappoint! Unfortunately the carne asada wasn't flavorful. Quick service, made to order. Fresh. Seat yourself at one of several booths, or eat in the parking lot. Plenty of parking out back, just often busy with traffic as there's only one way in or out.
WOW! This place was BUSY. They have different lines for different cuts of meat. We stood in line for Al pastor, and then in line for cabeza, lengua, Buche, and tripe. Then another line for carne asada. The restaurant was pretty big but every single table was filled with people. The Al pastor was sad, it was dry and had no real flavor. I was pretty disappointed as this usually is a better cut of meat on tacos. However I tried the carne asada tacos and they were amazing. It came with guacamole and it was delicious. My family favorite was the cabeza bc it had so much flavor and fat that rendered into the tortilla meat. I would definitely comeback here. However I will have to try their other location where one of the staff at this location stated the other location isn't as busy.
This was my first time stopping by, we noticed how long the line was out the door and almost left because we didn't want to wait, but stayed to give then a try since we were in the area. We got in the shortest line for adobada fries, we were told we had to pay for fries first, then order at the counter. That doesn't make sense, I didn't see anything posted about that. I reluctantly got in the beef line for tacos, the line kept shifting directions and people kept cutting in line, it took like 45 minutes to get to the counter to order. Ridiculous. The service here was not very helpful and also unfriendly. I was going to give them 3 stars because they need to work on their people skills and organization. But I am giving them 4 because the food was good it had a nice charred bbq taste. I wouldn't go out of my way to come back here, but I may give them another chance if I am in the area.
By far my favorite meat to get in tacos is right here! Everything is savory and well seasoned and FRESH! The smell alone makes your mouth water and then you take your first bite and it somehow is even better. Carne Asada is definitely my favorite meat but you cannot go wrong with any of the others here too. Line is always long but it goes fast. This is usually our go-to place when friends are in town and want to visit the Gaslamp. Everyone is always impressed by the flavors. I wish all Mexican food tasted this good. I also like getting a side of veggies here as well! The grilled veggies are gooooood. It can be pretty hard to find seating but they're also easy to eat on the go or get on the go and they wrap it in foil if you need. I also feel like the staff is kind and listens to your requests even when it's insanely busy. It's a well-oiled machine and I hope this business is always here and has much-deserved success!
Tijuana Mexican food in San Diego! I was told by a friend to come to this location of their multiple locations. This place has a ton of seating to enjoy your food. You have to order first and then pay last. You go to different line for different things such as the Al pastor has a couple separate lines while the asada, chorizo, nopal and Aztecs had different line. I did one of each of those I mentioned and then a couple plain cheese quesadillas, and 3 al pastor tacos. I also ordered horchata. An area for drinks are available and a separate area for the lime, ice chilled sliced radish and whole radish. My fave is the Al pastor. Friendly staff and there is security and security cameras. Tables outside. We accidentally drove to the location in gas lamp and it looked like a long single line. Good thing we came to the Chula Vista location. Great TJ food!

There was a big communication problem and language barrier here. People were walking out because of the wait and bad service. We also wanted tacos, we ended up in the beef taco line and just went with it, there were so many people just standing around in the order lines talking, with no intention of ordering. So frustrating. It took almost 40 minutes to get to the counter and order tacos. While the food was good and flavorful, it's not something I would go out of my way for again. There are a lot of better taco shops around, especially here in North County that are way easier to order from and taste amazing.
If in a hurry do not eat here. Be prepared to park far away since there is no parking lot but streets are pretty difficult. If you want possibly the best tacos in San Diego many say this is the best place! I definitely think this is the best in the entire county or even the CA state. They originated from Tijuana. Speaking Spanish it's helpful but not necessary. It is overwhelming on a normal day because you have to line up in a disorganized fashion to order different tacos. There is easily over 50 patrons there at all hours (closes 4am). Then you pay at the cashier at the end with all your different food in your tray. Afterwards you cross your fingers that you find a table to sit. If you don't want to stand in multiple linas I would say order pork adobado is the tastiest line to stop at. Always tip before you order bc they give you better meat portions. Adobado is tender pork large portions with onions and their famous sauce. They make the fresh tortillas right in front of you. Tacos and fries are great but Do not order tacos thru the drive thru, or at least check your order before leaving. They will not get them right. Got 4 carne asada tacos and the lady even asked "with everything" I clearly said "yes please" got home to plain carne asada tacos just meat and tortilla. For how expensive they are now I would think they'll make your order right. read more

You must come to Tacos el Gordo in Chula Vista if you're visiting San Diego. It's so very worth your drive down. I like this location better than the downtown SD one. Make sure to get in line for the taco type that you want. There's a different queue for each meat. I highly recommend the lengua! The meat is buttery soft and literally melts in your mouth. There's plenty of parking in the back, but not a lot of seating. read more

If it's your first time coming here, definitely check out reviews because the system is really confusing! They have different lines for different kinds of meat and dishes. Would recommend coming with multiple people so you all can divide and conquer! The adobada line is by far the longest and is usually out the door. -Adobada: basically al pastor tacos. The cut it fresh off the spit so the meat is juicy and tender. They have pineapple available but you only get it if you ask, so don't forget! I also wish they did slightly less sauce but other than that, loved it. -Carne Asada: also really solid! The meat was tender and well flavored. -Lengua: the lengua is super tender! Probably the most tender of all the meats. I wish it was seasoned a little more, but the meat is well cooked. read more

The star of the show are the al pastor tacos, and if I haven't been to Mexico City, then these would be top tier, but I can only say they're really good, but not amazing. If you're in the area, it would be hard to find more freshly prepared tacos. The carne asada were pretty good as well, but given that the lines were meat-specific, it was clear why people wait longer for the al pastor. The meat is succulent and the toppings compliment and don't overpower the meat. I was impressed by the amount of meat they put, but given the price point, I'd expect nothing less. It's like a fast cafeteria style atmosphere, so don't expect anything less. read more
While in San Diego the person I was with really wanted Tacos El Gordo and I agree. This location is large, easy to order, and plenty of places to sit. It can get really busy and they even have security. We got a variety of tacos but the best one was their simple carne asada tacos. How do they even season it? Because the meat tastes smoky in a best possible way. Loved it. But honestly all their tacos were a hit. You don't even need extra sauce. We also shared a small carne asada fries which was pretty good as well. Parking is easy here since they have a large lot in the back. I cannot wait to be back. I wish they had a location in OC. read more
Perfect place for authentic tacos at very affordable prices. The tacos are pretty massive for the price and absolutely stuffed with meat. The ordering system is pretty confusing, they are supposed to have separate lines for each type of meat, but when you order you can ask the server to make any taco you want, so best to just line up in the shortest line. Most of the meat options are incredible, and with so many options there is something for everyone. Plenty of seating and there is nearby street parking. read more
I've never heard of this restaurant, but once I posted it on my social media, many people commented that they love this place! It's down south in Chula Vista, but apparently they have a location in Las Vegas. I'm glad I got to try this yummy eatery. It reminded me of King Taco, especially their menu! But the taste was different. I liked the fresh guacamole on the carne asada tacos. I also had a spicy pork sope and they do it with the shell, then melted cheese, then the meat and dressings on top. My absolute favorite was the cut pieces of pineapple they gave. Great palette cleanser! When you enter, there are different stations. So if you want a carne asada anything, you go to that window. I didn't see pollo, so unsure if they have chicken. Wish they did. Service was good; they were nice at the windows. And the lady who was cleaning tables was so awesome to go grab salsa for me. I was going to get it but she was so helpful. I'd love to go back if I'm down in SD again. read more

Every time I visit San Diego I make trip to a least one Tacos el Gordo location. I've never been disappointed they are always fresh tasting and worth the wait. (The line moves quickly don't stress) My favorite is their mula (mulitas). Kinda like a quesadilla taco. The hot sauces are flavorful the red had got a little heat to it, I wish there was a super spice level hot sauce... read more
For some reason, it was extra tasty when we came. We came around opening at 10:30ish, no lines, some customers but not packed. Some friends were in town and wanted this iconic taco spot, we're always down even if we live here. We got head tacos (cabeza), adobada, and carne asada tacos, and shared carne asada fries. Maybe we were feeling it or it was extra good this time, but the head tacos were amazing!! The carne asada was good too, had that char on it and that grill taste. The meat wasn't all chewy, which was weird because their carne asada fries meat was chewy. I think they put all the shitty cuts in the fries. Tacos El Gordo also has the best adobada in my opinion. Not sure if the place got bigger, but they have the patio, main dining and back dining area. The lot had plenty of parking for cars too. The other location right off the freeway is no longer there. That's how long I haven't been here! read more
04/07/2026 I came here with my friend after our line dance class. She had two asada tacos. I had an asada taco ($4.14), which was a little dry and a bit too salty, and a lengua taco ($4.44), which was tender and juicy. I enjoyed it! I will definitely be back if I am in the area again. read more
When you're in the area, stopping here is basically a must. The al pastor tacos are everything!!! Always made fresh, perfectly juicy with just the right crisp. They're 100% my go-to every time. I've also tried the quesadillas, which are really good, but the al pastor tacos are easily the star of the menu. This visit, we decided to switch it up and ordered the asada fries. Unfortunately, they didn't quite live up to the rest of the food. The asada had a strong smoky flavor that didn't work for me and threw off the dish a bit. It's something I'd probably skip next time. That said, the service was fast and friendly as always. Definitely recommend sticking with the al pastor tacos and pairing them with a fresh horchata! read more

First time leaving a review, but definitely not my first time eating here. I've been coming to Tacos El Gordo since my high school days, and now I'm almost 30 lol. Safe to say, this is my go-to spot whenever I'm craving tacos or adobada fries. The flavors, especially the adobada with all the sauces, are just sooo good. This time I came in on a Monday around lunchtime. Plenty of parking, little to no line, and everything moved fast. We got our food quickly and found a seat right away. Definitely a different experience compared to the usual dinner or weekend rush. The vibe is super casual. Everyone's just there for good food, whether they're on a lunch break or just hungry. And the workers are always quick and friendly. Only reason for 4 stars: the fries can be a little inconsistent. Sometimes they're perfect, and other times... not so much. Unfortunately, this visit was one of those off days. That said, it's not stopping me from coming back. This place has been in my rotation for years, and it's not going anywhere anytime soon. read more

This is definitely a staple taco shop if you are ever visiting San Diego! First you walk up to order all your tacos at the different windows, then pay at the register. It is always busy here, but the service is very quick. They are known for their adobada tacos, which you need to get when trying this spot out. They also make their corn tortillas fresh & right in front of you. They are open late, so if you are craving tacos, Tacos El Gordo will always hit the spot! * Adobada Taco - 8.9/10 (the meat is cooked & seasoned very well. it is super juicy & the cilantro sauce pairs perfectly with it. i also like how they cut the meat into big slices. at this window, i also recommend asking for grilled pineapple!) * Lengua Taco - 8.6/10 (their lengua is tender, juicy, & buttery. they cut the tongue into perfect size chunks as well. i appreciate how they load the taco with meat & the salsa verde) read more

Tacos El Gordo If you know you know, we had to hit the Chula Vista location for the real experience. Even with a long line, the service was relatively quick and efficient. Pound for pound, this is still my favorite taco place of all time in California. I started with the Lengua (4.14) and Cabeza (4.14) which were both fire and stacked with meat. I also grabbed the Carne Asada (4.14) which had that perfect smoky flavor, especially paired with the guacamole. But ultimately, my favorite is the Adobada (4.14). It's their specialty for a reason and that sauce they use is just super good. I washed it all down with a horchata, and the best part was the unlimited free refills. If you're coming for the first time, unless you have a taco you're coming to try, skip the "let's try one of everything" approach and get right to the star: Adobada tacos. SO GOOD. Parking is tough because the lot is small and tight. Long lines for tacos and you want to try to get the center of the meat on the rotator. Came on a Saturday for dinner and didn't have trouble finding a table for 4. Everything was clean, super casual vibe. read more
For multiple reasons, the environment both inside and outside of this place reminds me of where I grew up, in a good way. If you're here for fancy, upper crust dining and a classy aesthetic, this isn't the place for it. But if you're here for some truly authentic Mexican food, in a room that feels like you got transported back to the 90's, then this is the place for you, and again I say that with total endearment. No frills, no air of appearance over food, this place is about as close to "home cooking" as an actual business is going to muster. You order directly from the cooks, you wait to get your food, you pay, you sit down. That's it. For the actual food itself, it was, unsurprisingly, damn good. If you have an allergy to bananas or kiwis though don't get anything with cactus in it because you're not gonna have a good time the day after, which is why I've got pictures of the bathroom in there also. Fresh and delicious tacos. Lots of variety on the menu with very reasonable prices. Friendly workers. Tables were wiped down timely between customers and floors were mopped and cleaned frequently. Lines for some flavors (lengua and adobada) were consistently long and moved a bit slow because people ordered a lot not because the workers. The cashiers were so efficient and great costumer service. Tried the Vampiro, lengua, azteca, tripa, seguero, and a few others. All were delicious! We visited two days in a row between 2-3pm over the long weekend and the place was packed. I like this location much better than the gaslamp location. There is a free parking lot and I was able to find a parking space both visits. Spaces are big and the lots seems safe and secure. Ample seating inside and outside even though it's busy. And much cleaner than the downtown location. read more

Do I even need to say anything? Arguably the best tacos available anywhere. Always the adobada but specifically the mulas (soft tortilla with melted cheese) or vampiros (crispy tortilla with melted cheese). The lengua is insanely tender and flavorful. The wait is pretty long to order. You line up in the line for the dish you want so going with a group to divide and conquer is best. Make sure to bring cash to tip the chefs! They accept card at the register. read more
Gordo my apologies for only giving you 3 stars years ago. After eating at almost every taco shop in the South Bay & in SD I have realize you are the real Taco Kings in SD hands down! It's all about the flavor & seasoning of the meat baby & they do it right. Yes it's pricey compared to TJ but every taco shop in SD is pricey now, they all about the same price now. Portions have gotten bigger here probably due to more competition in SD which is great for us. But what sets El Gordo apart from other Taco Shops is the flavor, freshness & vibe. They have the best Adobada taco in SD, it's big with the Latinos & especially the Asian people. And the best Cabeza taco in SD as well, don't sleep on the Tripa it's pretty good as is the Carne Asada & Lengua, all tacos are really packed with meat. Tortillas are good & don't forget your free grilled onions & chiles. They also have a very affordable Carne Asada fries $5 for a small & it's a good size, get that & 2 tacos & you should be good. They have very good Mullitas here as well. They have multiple windows to order different tacos & they move pretty fast tho it gets busy at times. My advice is if you in a rush don't come on weekends between 4-10 it's mad crazy, slows down on weekends after 11pm. Best times to come is weekdays from 11am to 4pm, they are open till 2am weekdays & till 4am weekends which is perfect for sober tacos after being at the club or bars late, don't drink & drive use an uber. Bring your own drink which will save you money to get an extra Taco. I'm happy to make my first review of 2026 Tacos El Gordo, I have grown to respect & love you Gordo & will be loyal to you Por Vida & keep coming here. The tacos I've tried here are the al pastor, carne asada, and tripa. This was actually my first time trying their tripa, and I have to say it was really good--nice and crispy, just the way I like it. The al pastor and carne asada are absolute must-orders. The setup is simple: you line up based on the meat you're ordering, then pay for everything at one designated counter. Service is fast, quick, and very efficient. One thing to keep in mind--if you want pineapple on your tacos, make sure to ask for it. The ambiance is super busy with plenty of seating available. They also have restrooms and parking, which is always a plus. I loved their orange cream soda; they offer horchata, melon, other flavors, and regular sodas too. I'll definitely be back for what I consider some of the best tacos in San Diego. read more

Yes! Tacos El Gordo will be open this Friday, 11/25/22 10 am til 4am but depending on how busy it is, they may close earlier. Check with the store (619) 271-7222 before you go on Black Friday.

I've been there a few times at opening when the adobada still needs to heat up, and others when it's already available. Probably takes at least 15 mins for it to be ready, so it really depends on the day.
Are the taco de azteca and taco de nopal vegetarian or do they have asada mixed in? Thanks!

Yes that is correct. I personally prefer campechana fries. They have both pork and beef.
