My husband and I came down to Chula Vista for the weekend and made a stop for dinner here at El Huevo Estrellado as it was walking distance from where we were staying. My husband was craving some asada fries, they were on the menu, and so we took the walk. Maybe it was just the time of day, but they were way quieter than anticipated; for most of our meal, my husband and I were the only people in the restaurant besides the manager who was also our server, and one other employee. The restaurant was slightly dim, there was music, everything had a really low-key vibe. That being said, the service was unmatched (undivided attention for the win) but the food was even better. We ordered the chicken flautas and an order of carne asada fries. Everything was super fresh; the flautas were hot and crispy, with well seasoned and tender chicken inside. The carne asada fries were some of the best we have ever had (and we have had many carne asada fries), with a super generous amount of melty cheese, meat, sour cream, and guacamole. We doused everything in their house salsa, which was really flavorful with a healthy dose of heat. If we had a fridge in our room, we would have bought some to take with us. The price point was perfect, the food was fantastic, and the service was solid. I very highly recommend this spot to anyone looking for some low-key and authentic Mexican food. First time visiting this restaurant. The decor inside is Spartan, but that's OK. The seating is also minimal, and those hard chairs makes themselves known before long. I was seated very quickly, to be expected, given there was only one other diner in the restaurant at 11:45 AM. There seemed to be a brisk To-Go order business, just very few diners. A small portion of tortilla chips and salsa were served right away. The salsa was a bit watery, but had some bite to it. The chips were cold, but fresh. I ordered the Carnitas Burrito ($11.25). It was not as large as many other Mexican restaurants serve, but it was plenty enough for lunch. It was presented very nicely on a square white plate with a garnish of cilantro, carrot and lettuce. It was tasty, but I bet in a blind taste test, it may not be recognized as Mexican food. The meat was delicious, but there was virtually no spiciness to it. Plus all the guacamole was in one end. The service was fine, but the server was not exactly overworked. I'd like to come back to try a combo meal, and get a better perspective of the offerings here. Or maybe a breakfast burrito. The restaurant is located in a strip center fronting Broadway, just south of E Street, and has ample parking. About half of the available seating is under a cover outdoors. read more

But this hole in the wall is exactly what I've been looking for. The service is so wonderful. They go above & beyond. Fast & friendly. It's what most places lack these days. This type of service. The food was absolutely delicious! My kids loved their Chilaquiles Verdes. They ate their whole late. I ordered the breakfast burrito and it was one of the best breakfast burritos I've had in a while. The inside is cute and simple. I was craving flautas and luckily found this awesome hole in the wall through Yelp. I popped in and ordered the beef flautas combo and a couple chicken hard shell tacos to-go. The food was fantastic- fresh, delicious, and tasted like having dinner at my best friend's mom's house. The great food was also met with warm service. Even though ordering to-go, they offered me chips and salsa while I waited. If I didn't have to get back home so soon, I would've loved to eat right there. Quaint little restaurant on the corner of Broadway and E Street in Chula Vista. They have a covered patio seating area also if you feel like sitting outside. I went there for breakfast I ordered three eggs scrambled with beans and rice. The beans were excellent creamy but not watery, the rice was flavorful I really enjoyed the meal in fact I left the plate clean. Worst part was taking my 4 year old to use the restroom, the sink only has scalding hot water. My son badly burned his hands. Low key decor with a TV playing in the dining area. Pedro greeted us and recommended the Albondigas, which I ordered. My companion ordered the Taco & Enchilada plate that came with rice and beans. The albondigas was good and came with large chunks of carrot, Mexican squash, peppers, onions and a side plate of rice. I'm a huge fan of albondigas. I had pretty high hopes for an outstanding lunch last week at El Huevo Estrellado. The Yelp reviews were mostly super positive, and the staff was very friendly. But the food was pricey and just not all that special. With so much competition around, you would think that every place in town would want to make a mark, and not just be another taco shop. So I ordered the one of the shrimp platters with no rice and no cheese. The shrimp was well cooked and tasty, although a few more would have been nice, and the beans were solid. This came with corn tortillas that were hot and soft and very tasty. They might have been the highlight of the meal. I am sure that this platter is more attractive when rice was added and the beans wore a crown of cheese. But I don't eat these things, so have to judge the food I receive on its merits. The bottom line is that the food was good, but nothing special. I will come back because the service was exceptional, and would like to try some other items on their menu! read more

Came here because they still have outdoor dining.. conveniently located in a great strip mall with a sushi,, thai and middle eastern restaurant and Mexican bakery. The customer service is excellent. Was greeted as soon as we sat and handed menus. They still have the code on the table as well... Decided to try the chicken mole with horchata and munchkin got the carne asada tacos with a sprite. I forgot the horchata is a bit bland for my taste buds (I like cinnamon) but after getting the salsa, I was glad. This time the chips and salsa were in normal containers. I was surprised that the chicken was in more of strips but glad that it was cooked perfectly and the mole sauce was light and not over powering but flavorful. The rice and beans were still flavorful and a 5/5. Munchkin said some of his carne pieces tasted burnt/overcooked and said it would've been a 4/5 but with the burnt pieces it brought the flavor/taste down a bit. Mind you he still ate both tacos with a few pieces of carne left on the plate. read more
