I have been driving by Carol Lee Donuts for far too long. I have always been slightly deterred by the CASH ONLY aspect since I almost never have cash. Today, I had some cash burning a hole in my pocket after I stopped by the newly-opened Subjective Coffee since it's in the same shopping center. It's very unassuming, but I think that's part of the allure. The donuts are more expensive than what you'd pay at King Soopers, but they're still reasonably priced at less than $3 a donut depending on the type. I got two filled Long Johns and a chocolate cake donut. The man working the counter was kind enough to through in a free twist too. The filled donuts are filled on the spot, which is really cool too. Be warned, they can get a little messy as a result. The cake donut was incredible. It was the perfect mix of crunchy and moist, which is what I want when looking for a good cake donut. My mom said the filled Long John was really good too. Overall, I definitely would come back here to buy a box of donuts in the future. I've been living near this area for the last 20 years and Carol Lee, along with a few other shops on/near 72nd, are a few stables that are still around putting out consistent food and amazing service, even through the pandemic. They are truly one of those shops that you go to all the time but doesn't think about reviewing... Cash Only like others mentioned (there is a 7-11 next door with an ATM). Carol Lee is not your donut shop that puts out crazy designs with rainbow colored bacon and gold foils. Carol Lee is your - mom n pop - I just really want a good donut done right - place. Come early as the selection is better. Their plain cake/glazed donuts are so fluffy and airy, bear claw is delicious and they're known for their crumb donuts. Most of all, they are known for having amazing customer service and have been taken care of the community for as long as they've been opened. I only know because I knew the mail carriers on this route and never failed, "Mr. Lee" (I don't think that's his name... ) would always hook them up with a bag of treats DAILY if they make it to his store before he closes for the day. They are open early until early afternoon like most donut shops. Hours say later but they generally close up around two or three pm depending on foot traffic. Possibly nine depending on the day but the diehards come early and clean house. They also have soda for sale and coffee. Typical gas station or diner variety though. They also do a donut and coffee special if that's your thing. Donuts are still better than the 7 - eleven next door but otherwise they are nothing life changing. You do have a few donut shops in the nearby area. This is local. Family run. No nonsense sweet treats. Sometimes they'll toss in a few extra donuts depending on who is working the register. How they feel etcetera. You can sit inside if you like. A few small tables and chairs harken your back to a late night nineties donut shop.
