12gage was the name of the bartender who serviced the order. Gave good recommendations on the local beers, and recommended the papa lou's ale. Gave me a sample first to try and after testing and trying, I ordered a glass. It was only 4.75 for a 16oz beer! Sat next to a couple who seemed to be regulars. They highly recommend the wings and stated that they were 'top notch'. I ended up ordering a pub burger (no cheese, no sauce) as well as a 6 pack of wings. The pub burger was cooked to medium, compared to medium rare, which I had previously ordered, however it was taken to go, so it could have cooked itself while it was transported back to the hotel. The wings were decent...however i thought they were going to be just in a dry rub, not in a wet rub as well. It was not very spicy, as the couple next to me stated...however the sauce was still pretty good. The fries that came with the meal was cooked fresh and came out hot, however the portion that was given was not that large (maybe 10 or 15 pieces of 'steak fries') compared to what you'd expect of a good portion of them. The atmosphere seems quite nice, as the bar is in the middle, surrounded by some high tops, and booths, surrounded by a good amount of televisions showing various sporting events. I think I have been to all of the CAH's in the RDU area and some outside of the area. The Durham location is very similar to the others. The food is ok, but don't expect much beyond typical bar food. My goto is usually fish and chips. Not health food, but it tastes good. They usually have good beer specials, and if you want to watch a sporting event, lots of t.v's to choose from. read more

I've been here twice and both instances were disappointing. The place looked run down from the outside through the inside. The patio had holes in it's screen. The area where we sat I was greeted with drops of water from their AC unit. Service was there but not present nor attentive. As far as food, this visit I ordered some Swiss burger which came on regular sandwich bread instead of brioche bun and tasted more like a Reuben than a burger. He said his burger was alright, I ordered a ribeye but they were out, so I got a sirloin instead. I've never seen a steak so perfectly rectangular, which does not bode well in my opinion. Asked for it on the rare side, it was medium to medium well. No flavor whatsoever, no wonder the waitress asked if I wanted A1. Potatoes were just that - hot potatoes mashed. Tasted like they had no butter, salt... anything. And the broccoli was just steamed broccoli. Again, no butter, salt, spices - nothing. I met up with some friends for dinner here last week because it's conveniently located between Durham and Chapel Hill and has tons of shops/stores/Target/Sam's Club nearby, perfect for running errands. As others have mentioned it's a run-of-the-mill sports bar, albeit slightly nicer/cleaner than others. Our service was actually great! The waitress took our orders, refilled our waters, very friendly, and let us linger for awhile to chat even after we finished our meal. No complaints there. My husband ordered chicken tenders with fries, I ordered fish tacos which came with a side of rice, and my friends ordered the BBQ sandwich. My fish tacos were amazing! You can decide between grilled or fried;I opted for the fried fish tacos and they were delectable. Not too oily/greasy, plenty of filling and tomato/lettuce inside, and the 2 fish tacos were large enough of a portion to fill me up for dinner. I also enjoyed my husband's fries a lot. Came here last night to have dinner and watch the UNC basketball game. On Wednesdays all draft beers are $3 except Bell's Two-hearted. We sat at the bar and Danitra took great care of us. She changed our TV to the game with no problem. Made sure our drinks were full, offered to give us samples of new beers on tap, and made sure the food we ordered was correct and delivered in a timely manner. If I don't get chicken wings I seem to always get their Greek Grilled Chicken Salad Kalamata olives, tomatoes, red peppers, carrots, cucumbers, red onions and feta cheese tossed in a house-made Greek dressing- $10.29. Its big, filling and the dressing is delicious. This place has so much going for it that it remains my favorite sports bar in Durham. read more

Stopped in for lunch while waiting for a new tire next door. Bianca our server was very friendly and attentive, we where there for the first day on a menu change. She suggested some of the new items, I went with the chicken Cobb salad, large portion really fresh ingredients, my wife went with classic wings and bacon cheese fries which she really enjoyed. They also had a "pink ribbon martini" to help raise money for breast cancer research, wanna thank Erin the bartender for suggesting it, it was delicious. I been here numerous times with co-workers, it's a good place to come with big groups. I've had the nachos and the shrimp wrap, pizza which are nothing special. I was pleasantly surprised however, when I ordered their Greek Chicken wrap it was very good with it's chicken, feta, spinach, and balsamic vinaigrette on a pita wrap. I got it with the vegetables which were also surprisingly fresh and tasty. Most times I've just been for drinks. They always have drink specials which is a nice addition. This needs to be a zero star review. Please take into account that Yelp won't let me give zero, and please look at the rest of my reviews ‐‐ I'm very fair, and usually give praise every time I can. I understand the current situation, but the food, service, and management here was reprehensible, and beyond any excuse, pandemic or not. We were a table of four; one of three tables in the whole restaurant, though I could see the kitchen, and there were about seven tickets hanging on the line, so they must have had some takeout orders, too. 47 minutes after ordering (there was a big red clock in the kitchen I could see and took note of when we ordered, so I'm not just making this up) 47 minutes -- two of our four meals came out. The waitress apologized that one of the meals had been made wrong and said she'd be back, (no explanation for the fourth meal missing). At that point we asked for ketchup, salt and pepper, and some honey mustard dressing. Eleven minutes later, the third meal came out--steak tacos that were delayed due to the afore mentioned mistake. They were so far past well done this time as to be inedible. Also note, the 4th meal, a Cobb salad had still not arrived, nor had the ketchup, dressing, or salt and pepper. Twelve minutes later, the two meals that we've had for 23 minutes have been essentially finished, and the Cobb salad shows up (now 70 minutes after ordering, still no explanation) along with the now useless ketchup, etc. We were told the salad would be taken off the bill. At this point, one of us got up to find a manager. After explaining our issues, the manager said he would give a further discount... At which point he disappeared, never to return. We sat there for about 10 more minutes, waiting for the manager to come to the table. When he never returned from the kitchen, we gave up and proceeded to pay the bill we had been given. The salad had been discounted, but note: There was a 20% gratuity added onto the bill; for a party of 4, whose meal was awful and slow, who were promised an additional discount by a manager who disappeared. I have never been so disappointed in every aspect of a meal before. Pandemic or not, go eat anywhere else. And if you're tempted to go here, message me and I'll talk you out of it, and give you suggestions on where to eat so you won't be as angry and disappointed as the four of us. read more

I ordered curbside online, paid 20% tip and received an email that my order would be ready in 22 minutes. I arrived right on time, called and was told my order would be out soon. I waited another 10 minutes and called again getting another person. I was told that they weren't near the kitchen but my order wasn't done yet and there was no ETA that he could share. I waited another 20 minutes and went inside only to learn that my order had been sitting there at the front for quite some time. In fact, all the food was cold. Which I appreciate the fast service but I haven't even looked at the drinks yet. Then when you say no the waitress was literally back every 3 minutes asking if we were ready. Then I ask her the difference between the dry rubbed wings and the fried wings and she said its the sauce, so i go ahead and order the dry rub and she brings me a plate of pale rubbery grilled chicken. This Carolina Ale House is the epitome of sub-standard food & service. My family & I have been coming to this Ale House for years, knowing the service is poor & inattentive, but the food is normally good. Well, that is the case no longer. Don't bother with this Ale House, just go to one of the others. I hope the management sees this and figures out how to turn around this restaurant to be more like the others. The overall local restaurant chain is a great, this location does not reflect that. I'll start with the evening events. It was a cold Tuesday evening as we're walking in to the restaurant. I notice the smell of stale beer on the patio, my 4yo notices the smell of stale cigarettes in the foyer of the building. My 4yo noticed the cigarette smell, that should tell you something if you have kids. Next we order our drinks, and the server brought the wrong drink for my kid, we didn't bother to correct them. My wife and I get beer, her beer was served flat alongside my beer with a beautiful head of hoppy goodness. The bartender, drink runner, or server should have noticed this, but NOPE, they served it flat, like super duper flat, not even a bubble in the glass, anywhere. Now comes our food, sigh... The Buffalo Zinger wrap from my wife was lacking flavor, much less any zing. It tasted bland. My wings which I ordered grilled, 1/2 dry-rub 1/2 five-alarm, were soggy and bland as well. I had to ask for more dry rub because there was so little used on it, the wings had no taste. It was a good thing the wings were temperature hot because the five alarm sauce was cold to the touch. Eventually the wings heated the sauce, and made them tolerable. In summary, go to a different Ale House. It's normally a good chain, just not this location. I'm sorry my first review in years had to be a negative one, but I hope management sees this and takes drastic steps to revamp this location. read more

Visiting the area from out of town and decided to try this place. I did a curbside pickup order. When I arrived there were no signs or parking spots for curbside pickup. The lady told me to pull up to the side of the restaurant and when she handed me my food she told me that they don't have bottled water (which I ordered and paid for). I asked if it was refunded and her response was "we don't refund Grubhub orders". I told her it was a personal online order and she said "we don't refund online order items either". This place has some potential - good location with plenty of parking, walls lined with TV's...but it squanders that potential and is one of the worst sports bars I've been to in recent memory. I went there with a few friends to watch an important NBA playoff game. When we walked in, the game was not playing on a single one of their ~30 TV's, and our waiter acted offended when we asked him to put the NBA game on (and it took nearly a half hour and me asking another waiter to change the channel to get them to finally put the game on). I was surprised that it wasn't busier but no complaints from me about the more low key kind of atmosphere, I found it pretty freaking. Once seated we were greeted by a very personable server decked out from head to toe in support of her favorite football team! She was pleasant and was knowledgeable about the food and drink specials. I was intrigued by her "pitch" of the raspberry lemon sangria so I gave it a go-never again! It was waaay to sweet but I didn't complain instead I sucked it down quickly and couldn't wait to have my usual drink with football-beer! My friend ordered an LIT for the first round and I sampled it-just kind of average in my opinion.
