Ate breakfast here when staying at Hotel Julien. Food is very good - just make sure you bring a good appetite with you! The portions are very big. I tried the banana bread french toast - two very thick large slices of bread! The bananas that are served with the french toast are good, but skimpy portion - you might have a 1/4 of a banana on top. My partner had the eggs, hash browns, etc & he said it was as if he had 4 eggs instead of two. Neither one of us were able to finish meal. Would be nice if given option of one or two slices on the french toast. Service was attentive. Think I'd find a local breakfast diner option instead of eating here next time. read more

Horrible dinner! Tried to order turkey dinner for Thanksgiving. They had only garlic mashed potatoes, sausage stuffing, and NO gravy! The pumpkin soup had no pumpkin flavor at all. It tasted almost like acorn squash doctored up. Finally ordered pork shank...big mistake. There was a seven inch by 3/4 inch-no kidding- layer of fat over a couple of bones and maybe 3-4 bites of pork. My husband described it perfectly, "That is gross!" It had a disgusting smell. We wondered where was the pride for a chef to plate such a dish? I sent it back politely and reordered a prime rib dinner (no choice of potato, just the garlic mashed). The manager didn't even apologize, nor did the server! The pumpkin pie (the only choice for dessert) was literally an inch wide at the crust. It was laughable. They gave us the pork dinner price saving us $4.00. WOW! Oh and one word really can make such a difference. Instead of (presumably) "full" bar, our server said it was an "open" bar. Yeah, we were charged for our drinks. We said we were thankful we'd never have to eat there again. Dinner averaged $30.00 each. read more

Stopped for lunch before heading out of town today. Just missed the breakfast cutoff time. Had the pesto chicken sandwich with fries. It was pretty good, but nothing out of this world. Wait staff was friendly, atmosphere was pleasant. Kind of wished I made it for breakfast as their menu looked better than the lunch menu. read more

Terrible service. Manager was more worried about drinking with a table to ever find out where our food was. Waitress forgot to put order in, and instead of telling us she just avoided coming out. Hour later manager finally came over and talked to us. He gave us our food free and said that's it. Never said sorry or had waitress come out to explain why we sat there. We just wanted answers and the other manager said we gave you the food for free what else do you need. We were rushed to our show, plus not in a great mood. Can you put less than one star? This is garbage. I'm here right now. I made a yelp account solely to warn people. I waited 45 minutes for food and when it arrived it was a mere ghost of nutrients. We were ignored for the first ten minutes and finally received the trash they slopped on plates and attempted to pass off as acceptable. The only reason I drank my Bloody Mary was because it had alcohol in it, but it was basically ketchup over ice. I can't even. The service. The food. This blows. I'm going to angry eat Taco Bell. If you're thinking Sunday brunch you may want to think elsewhere. It's really just breakfast and no more creative than most other breakfast cafes. However the price is reasonable ($12) for what you get. We also ordered off the menu and the eggs Benedict was very good especially the crab cake Benedict. But avoid the banana foster pancakes- we ordered and they came as two ordinary pancakes with caramel and powdered sugar and powdered cinnamon and a little dollop of whipped cream all On The Side in their own little dishes - how weird is that!! Wait staff not terribly attentive, but the atmosphere in a historic hotel is terrific! And easy parking. read more

In town, visiting from Chicago for a holiday weekend. Wasn't expecting much when we came in for a late Saturday night dinner. Saw prime rib advertised on the chalkboard outside, and happened to be in the mood for some steak. What a surprise! This was the most tender and flavorful prime rib I've had, quite comparable to that of the Chicago Chop House. If you know that place, you'll know this is quite high praise indeed. Despite the late hour, we were still able to get medium rare prime rib, perfectly roasted. It was so soft you could cut it with a butter knife, and flavored with a mild horseradish-tinged au jus. The vegetable medley was perfectly cooked, and my daughter wolfed down the warm sun-dried tomato bread, dipped in an olive oil of impressively green hue. I had a nice side salad with the house dressing, a fresh and fruity mango vinagrette, reminiscent of what might be served in a Japanese family restaurant. On the advice of the friendly and attentive, but not overbearing server Daniel, I also enjoyed a couple of tasty beers from the local Galena brewery. I realize this is just a hotel restaurant (of the Hotel Julien), but this establishment really has it together. read more

Great wine list , reasonably priced. Untrained waiter was very nice...served salads and soup before the cocktails. Huge chunk of swordfish had lots of gristle running through it. So much that I gave up halfway through. read more

Please do not bother! The rib eye was a fatty slab with no flavor and the meat portion was leather tough. The veggies were mush. My husband had the bison burger, again absolutely not flavor, and grilled beyond recognition. The "home made chips" were stale. The decor was dark and sad, and looked dirty. Arrived around 9:30 PM, was greeted with a warm smile as I asked for a table for one. The waitress was an older woman who was rather slow, uncaring, and most likely ready for the end of the day. I was offered a complimentary wine tasting sample that was basically a half glass of wine. I ordered the seafood macaroni and cheese, and the whole thing because it was simply too good not to. Afterwards I was given a complimentary mini loaf of banana bread. Overall, I was very happy with my experience! read more

When we walked in, we were only the third table that had people siting at it and are currently at 1.5 hours on waiting for our food. My family was celebrating my Mothers 81st birthday on February 4th . we were treated horribly by the arrogant waiter from the start. The entrees were cold and undercooked. The 1st time we ate at caroline s was for fathers day a couple years ago. The service was slow and the food was like warm when we got it. We decided to try again today giving them the benefit of the doubt that we had a large party and it was busy. this time it was just my husband and me and it was the same stuff. Our waitress was not friendly when she took our orders and then we didn't see her again until our food came out as we sat there for 30 to 40 mins with empty cups. They were not busy today and it took 30 to 40 mins for us to get our food. When we finally got our food my husbands was missing his bacon and only got 3 pieces of toast instead of 4. My fries were cold and his over easy eggs were fully cooked. Our waitress dropped off our food and walked away didn't ask if we needed anything else. She spent the rest of the time at the bar talking to people. I had to stop the manager who was walking by and ask for my husband bacon even thou he was almost done with his food. She brought it out immediately and it tasted like it came out of a microwave. Our waitress then came over after seeing this and asked if we had everything. I said he was missing his bacon and she said oh and walked away. We received our check and realized coffee and orange juice cost us 2 and 3 dollars each. This was not on there menu and we were not asked if we wanted any it was just poured when we sat down, so we assumed it was complimentary. This is known as a high class resturant but the food is mediocare at best and the service is severly lacking. read more

I came here on a business trip and ate here yesterday. I wasn't that hungry so I got the soup, an amazing cream of mushroom soup, and the baby lettuce wedge salad. My boyfriend got the Caesar salad with steak. Sherry was our server and both the service and the food were outstanding, even though they put steak on my wedge and chicken on his Caesar. The server saw the mistake and took it back, but they just picked it off and switched it-they left a piece of chicken on his. She offered dessert, but We were full. She got a nice tip. What a difference a day makes! I had to come here by myself, but I planned to get the same thing. The waiter took forever to get to my table, didn't offer me wine, I had to ask if I could go ahead and order and it took forever to get my meal. The table next to me had a different server and she had come by 3 times to his one. The soup was ok, but the salad had basically no dressing and what it was was watered down. I barely touched it and he didn't ask if anything was wrong. No dessert offered, it was a horrible experience. He barely got a 15% tip and I should have given him nothing. read more

I ate at this restaurant on 4/23 as a part of a group of 7. the restaurant was virtually empty so the service was OK. I ordered a spicy Thai pasta. It was not edible!!. the pasta was almost raw or had been cooked days previously and was dried out. - could not even chew it. There were 4 pea pods, no noticeable cabbage or mushrooms as advertised, and only couple of carrot shreds. the other diners with me ate their food quietly with no comments about how wonderful it was. Our waiter was rude, didn't know about the menu and gave the wrong price of an entree special- He said the almond encrusted Mahi Mahi was $24, and we were charged $29. It was not good at all. The potatoes were cold and the fish tasted like frozen from the box with a very salty tartar sauce slathered all over it, probably to improver the flavor-it didnt work. He apologized for giving us the worn price but we still had to pay the $29. Totally not worth it and will NEVER go there again!!! We were there Friday eve, August 26. read more

I'd like to be able to give this place more stars, the food I did eat was great, but unfortunately I can't. Due to food allergies, I asked if I could substitute a side with grilled asparagus, a side offered with another entree. The waitress said she'd have to go back to the kitchen and see, but that grilled seasonal vegetables was doable. I then said fine, just give me grilled seasonal vegetables as I didn't wait to wait longer for my food. When my meal come out, it was not with the vegetables. They removed my meat and put it on a separate plate for me but I never received that vegetables at all, and no discount or care was added to my check for eating only half the meal I paid for. Normally I'm a very patient, and understanding person, but it's not difficult to sub a side (I know I've done it), and it's also not difficult to correct a mistake by offering a discount. Therefore this place only gets two stars. read more

Very mediocre food and service. Our family of five had a late breakfast and each had a different menu item. The Eggs Benedict was not prepared well, the muffins were not toasted, the sauce had no flavor, and the included hash browns were very leathery and barely browned. The restaurant was not crowded at all yet the waiter acted very hurried. His service was very sporadic and ill timed. We had very good dining in the area, including a great breakfast at another restaurant, but felt we should try the hotel restaurant since we had been staying there. Just left Caroline's in Dubuque. I thought that since it was new years eve that the restaurant would have their A team cooking.....big mistake! I travel for my business and eat dinner out hundreds of time per year and this meal was probably one of the worst I have ever eaten. I had their New Years special which was a very small piece of tenderloin and 5 pieces of shrimp. The shrimp were so small (size of a quarter) that once they fried them it was really just fried batter. They were something that I would expect in a shrimp basket at A&W or Dairey Queen. The steak had some kind of topping on it but it was so bad that I could not tell you what it was. Also with the meal I was served a bowl of Beer Cheese soup. I literally couldn't eat it. It was barely warm and so salty that it burned my mouth. for that gourmet meal I was charged 32.00! I would not recommend this restaurant and if I were them I would be talking to my executive chef in regards to allowing that type of food leaving the kitchen. read more

I saw that the hotel had a restaurant and assumed I would avoid it as most hotels I have been to have had restaurants that were overpriced and not very good. On our first night, we were tired so we decided to go downstairs and try it anyway. I'm very glad we did. I don't know about local prices, but, given that I am used to paying NJ/NY restaurant prices, I was blown away by the quantity / quality of the food versus the price. The white bean chicken chili signature soup was great. The short rib ($20 for short ribs and the soup? - not in my home area!) meat just fell apart with the touch of my fork and I didn't have to use my knife at all. Delicious. I preferred the Yukon gold potatoes to the signature mashed red (a little dense / heavy for me). We liked it so much that we went back later in the week and had a wonderful salmon special and the duck potstickers which were good, not great. The servers and management were very friendly and enthusiastic about what they were serving. read more
