It's just a few miles off the Hwy but several lefts and rights through the farming community. The property is currently for sale. We walk in and we're warmly greeted even though it was clear we were not locals and overdressed as we were coming back from a funeral. When we walked in there were several couples on the dance floor enjoying g themselves to some country music. The bar which is a nice size has several seats taken and there were a few sections of seating for dinner, of which about 1:2 was full. They offer a salad bar and we're proud to say " no preservatives through all the homemade fixings. The salad bar could have used a little TLC and the bread sticks were a little stale but overall the selection was deep and good tasting. My prime rib was a little tough and about a 20oz portion for the king cut. My wife had the queen cut and it was roughly the same size and she though it was just Ok. My side was mashed potatoes which were dense with a brown gravy and the other plate had a baked potato. Our waitress was attentive and friendly. Not worth a return trip

I called them on Thursday for a Saturday night reservation and they were able to accommodate us. I ordered the Salmon entree- it came with dill sauce and a baked potato and I selected vegetable beef soup (the soup of the day). Husband ordered the NY strip with mushrooms and the garlic mashed potatoes and a house salad. You have a piece of corn bread waiting at your place setting when you arrive. They also serve dinner rolls. It's a tremendous amount of food. My daughter ordered the same thing I did except she subbed her potato for broccoli ($3 upcharge) We had a glass of wine as well. Service was quick and efficient, they had two people serving our table. Everyone received their entrées at the same time and all courses were served at once. Was very efficient and friendly. The total was $150 for the three of us before tip.

It took my retiring to finally start dying dining here. It's about a 70 minute ride from Cedar rapids Iowa to this location but we do it over and over and over again. That should tell you something about how good they are. Their service is outstanding. The food is great never had a bad meal. My wife has Alzheimer's and she always enjoys the ride up in the view overlooking the river. I had to ask for tables along the outside to get the best view of the river. It was suggested I might want to make a reservation to be sure I would get one if available. We've eaten various items all over the menu you can't go wrong with anything it's all great. If you haven't tried it you should.

The kitchen consistently does a fantastic job, and I've never had a complaint about the quality of the meals. Unfortunately, the service has steadily gone downhill over the past 6-7 years. The bartenders are very unfriendly, sometimes outright rude, and many don't seem to have much experience mixing drinks. Politeness and a smile never hurts in the customer service industry especially if you are the first person customers see when entering your establishment. We come in about every two weeks if not more and the past few years it feels like there's a different bartender every time which makes it difficult to build any familiarity or feel welcomed as a regular customer. There used to be the same two or three girls every weekend but now it seems 10 more have been unnecessarily added. High turnover is noticeable, and it definitely affects the overall experience. One thing many of us longtime customers have noticed is that the atmosphere doesn't feel the same as it did when more family members seemed to be involved in running the business. It used to have a warm, welcoming feel that made people want to return. Now, that sense of hospitality seems to be missing. And good luck finding anyone with the last name Kalmes outside the kitchen. I genuinely want to see this restaurant succeed. The food is outstanding and deserves the loyal customer base it has built over the years. The Kalmes family in general is an amazing family and they deserve to continue their hometown legacy. However, exceptional food can only make up for poor service for so long. I believe they could benefit from reevaluating the front-of-house staff, investing in better training, and placing a greater emphasis on friendly, consistent customer service. I've waited a long time before posting this because I hoped things would improve and I also wanted to gather opinions from my fellow diners, as expected many of them agree with my sentiments. Unfortunately, after my most recent visit a 3 weeks ago, I experienced the same issues yet again--a new bartender who struggled to make basic drinks and wasn't particularly welcoming. It's disappointing because this restaurant has so much potential. I sincerely hope they can address these concerns, because I'd love to see it become the place it used to be!
