A most excellent place in all respects. I needed gopher wire and soil amendments for the vegetable garden prep and they had EVERYTHING I needed plus super helpful employees to give me advice and directions and all with smiles and great attitudes and knowledge! Shout out to Frank and Pete!! I added some Worm castings to my chicken manure and soil amendments and drove to the back for the two smiling loaders to fill up my mini cooper with all the bags. The cashier, Caroline, welcomed me and asked if I had a rewards phone number and that reminded me that I had $30 in reward coupons to use!! Yikes!! If she hadn't asked me, I would've kicked myself For forgetting about those. It reduced my already reasonable bill even further and now I am ready to prep my vegetable garden!! Woo hoo!! read more

Ace hardware is the old time local store where you walk in and ask for that little nut or tube, or rust-resolving paint, garden thing, etc. Skillful assistance with any project by a seasoned maker-person will either direct you to your part or walk you through your problem and work out what you need to solve it. They have a good variety of stuff and I've found their employees to be not only easily available to help you but extremely knowledgeable about any house projects you may have questions on. In the rare case an employee doesn't know about my particular project, they quickly find someone who does. I come here when I want good service, helpful floor-staff and good selection of projects. Convenience to Ojai area residents is this store's single greatest attribute. Bottom line is that it more often than not, going here saves you a trip down to Ventura or Oxnard. And if you don't need to pick up a ton of stuff, the higher prices are worth it. It's also fairly well-stocked for it's modest size, and demonstrates outstanding customer attention....albeit almost over-the-top at times. You will NEVER find a hardware with more employees working the floor....watching your every move.... desperately looking for an opportunity to assist. That said, the down-side is higher prices. For some things like lumber, the prices at Ace are two to 3 times higher than making the trip down to Ventura or Oxnard. But if you only need one piece of wood, you just suck it up instead of driving 25-45 minutes each way. The mark-up on other items aren't as high as the lumber, but still higher all the same. So basically if you're gonna fill your truck (or car) with lots of stuff for that upcoming home improvement or garden project, you may want to go elsewhere. read more

Wanted to acknowledge and thank Meiner's Oaks Ace Hardware, and specifically, Matt for all of the help, expertise and kindness they offered us during our recent visit to Ojai for the holidays with my parents. Matt and his team assisted us with educating and selecting a gas and a charcoal bbq, a wonderful cooler as well as a few bird feeders and seed. The store was extremely busy but Matt was able to make us feel like the only and most important customer in the shop, all the while managing everything else going on at the time. The Ojai Valley is limited on choices of businesses. But companies like ACE should NOT gouge this community. I purchase a can of compressed air... they charged $7.99 pre-taxing. Walmart you get two can s for $8.88. This is just one example of their over pricing. Since Avenue Hardware and Builder's Mart have closed they charge more and offer less variety. Well I read all the great reviews of this store and while I normally write glowing reviews or none at all, I decided to write this very honest review of my experiences at this store. Yes, this store is well stocked, has a large contractor clientele (because who wants to drive to the Box Store), has several nice people working there but every time I have been in there for any reason I have found them, especially some of the women on the checkout, to be rude and leave a lot to be desired. First, when we first moved to Ojai, we purchased several thousand dollars worth of merchandise that didn't get recorded properly on our Ace card, their fault. Boy they were the most unhelpful people including the owner, who said he couldn't do anything. A quick call to Corporate Ace, who also didn't understand why the store wouldn't do it, other than it took a little extra effort, fixed that. Then recently I had to exchange some floor wax. A staff person told me to put the unwanted wax back on the shelf and he escorted me to checkout showed the older checker woman my receipt and said I was making an exchange. Heck no, she yelled at both of us and said I had to go get the old wax because she had to scan it. Duh, the sku was on the receipt. Well the guy who helped me scuttled off muttering about what a pain the checker was; She was still yelling when i returned with the wax from the shelf. So she upset me, caused a scene at the checkout and held up a line. I'm no spring chicken and have shopped in many hardware stores and I have to say this is the worst one I have been in for customer service. I will never go back if I can help it. In contrast the other hardware store in town is always a delightful experience and my contractor husband, who shops both, agrees. It may be a little more money but I don't mind paying for real customer service, good behavior and a pleasant shopping trip. read more
