my boyfriend and I stayed this past weekend after attending an event at Bill Graham. I booked this hotel because of its distance from the venue. It took us less than 15 minutes to walk back and the walk wasn't difficult. The room itself was nice and spacious. There was a table, a comfortable chair in the corner, the bathroom was fairly clean and the bed was comfy. I think they would benefit from upgrading their TV channels though. There was little to choose from and the remote was a pain to deal with. Good thing we didn't come for the TV. Lol, the robe I tried on after my shower was dirty so who knows if they wash them. Look at it before putting it on! We placed the "do not disturb" sign on our door before bed but house keeping knocked on our door anyways. This was frustrating considering we had a late night and it was early. Not to mention we heard sirens, motorcycles, etc. all night. But, what can you do about that when you're in the city? Our stay for one night ended up being $209 which I thought was completely ridiculous for the service that was given. On my invoice the room itself was $109 & we paid $35 for parking so that leaves $65 in fees & taxes. Staying in the city is no joke, but next time I think I'm better off staying at Larkspur and driving to the event. I'll save money & get more bang for my buck! read more

Stayed here in January during my California vacation. I bookmarked this hotel on Hotels.com because it was affordable and the pictures online looked great. Plus, I was able to use my travel points to cover the cost but normally it's around $150 per night. As soon as I walked in the lobby, the receptionist greeted me and had my room ready. I just signed a couple of documents and she handed me the key. FYI, each room has a different theme inspired by famous figures in San Francisco history. Rooms have a colorful design with eclectic furniture and a touch of Victorian. I was given a double room on the 3rd floor named Marian & Vivian Brown which I found out they were famous identical twins in San Francisco known for their bright snappy outfits and hats. I immediately fell in love with the design and color scheme when I walked in my room. The furniture was also pretty cool. The room featured 2 queen beds with Victorian style headboards, a separate seating area with chaise and a small table, chest of drawers made out of metal filing cabinet, fridge, full-length mirror and a glass top writing desk with an antique typewriter. The room itself was roomy and tidy. The bathroom was also spacious and clean with fresh towels and organic toiletries. Another plus was the location. Market St shopping was a block away. (This is also where you can catch the trolley.) It ran up and down Market St so I was able to tour the city from Ferry Building all the way down to Castro. There's also plenty of bars and good eats within walking distance from the hotel. I went to 3 speakeasy bars and an amazing ramen place nearby. I will post my reviews in the next several days. If you have rental like I did, I found free street parking on Folsom St which is about 3 blocks away, but you will have to move it on certain hours. Overall, I had great stay at this hotel. It's not luxury but it was easy to find, location was great and the room was quirky and clean. Another bonus was the complimentary breakfast box and coffee in the morning. The receptionist was kind enough to give me an extra one because I missed out on my first day. Now that's good service! Will stay here again in the future. read more

I found this quirky little hotel by doing one of those bidding things on Priceline. I don't think I would have ever selected it on my own. I liked it. 1. It was away from the rest of the wedding crowd who were staying near Union Square. It mean I had time on my own. And it was $70 per night less than the group rate at the wedding hotel. 2. The room was nice. Kingsize bed, funky decor, plenty of room, remodeled bathroom, and a huge TV. 3. Breakfast included. Pretty good: coffee, fresh croissant, OJ, yoghurt and fruit. There's a gym at the hotel across the street owned by the same guy. 4. Interesting neighborhood with some very good restaurants. 5. Two (long) blocks from the Civic Center BART Station. Here's the final hook. It is the last pickup for the shuttle to the airport. I got to my terminal in 20 minutes today (Sunday afternoon with no traffic problems) for only $16. If you want a resort hotel or a chain hotel, do not book the Carriage Inn. The other guests I bumped into were Euro-tourists. read more

My gfs & I checked into the Danielle Steel (used to read her books!) room on the 4th floor for just a weekend night. Not a bad place to stay at but the area is a little sketchy. Us girls did make it safe there & out but I probably wouldn't recommend for a single person though. Would i stay here again?? Ehhhh probs not but then again... it depends. I stayed here for a night during the time they had the Outside Lands concerts. I wasn't in town for Outside Lands. Prices for the other hotels were so expensive that I decided to go along with the Carriage Inn. I had such a horrible time at The Fairmont (SJ) that I wasn't expecting much here. But to my delight, I was pleasantly surprised. The room was spacious and cute. I stayed in the Frank Chu room. I didn't know who he was till I Wiki'd him. Everything was clean, they had a coffee maker, and the bed was comfortable. It's in a convenient location. The staff was friendly when I checked in and when I checked out. The hotel got -1 star because I could hear the people above me walking around but otherwise this hotel was superb. I would definitely stay here again. read more

I hate to do this and put such a bad review, but it really was a bad stay at this hotel. First, there are so many homeless people you can't walk on the sidewalk to get to the hotel. Not only that, but there is urine and feces to enjoy along the way. I was with my sons at 13 and 15 and they got to experience what it looks like to shoot up drugs. Once in the room, it was cute and quaint, but not clean at all. There was poop on a rolled up towel above the shower. Not just a dirty towel, but poop (yes I smelled it) on an otherwise clean towel. If that wasn't enough, whoever cleaned our room pee'd in our toilet and didn't flush. It was a nice way to come home from a long day, after walking past all the homeless. At checkout, we learned that there was an $18 per day "urban fee" that we were charged. The other reviews were too kind for the experience. read more

For what it is...price-wise, location, etc, I had a pretty good experience. The concierge was always helpful - tips on food, where to go, eat, and all the good things that SF offers. One sucky thing - you call the "front desk" and you may get the Good Hotel (next door, and they share a staff). The hotel is accessible to the Muni/SamTrans/BART. They offer tour packages that they can assist you to book, we ended up with the hop-on/hop-off tour for $36/pp for 2 days. Not too bad for a little tour of SF and transportation then. :) The stop is at the Asian Art Museum - a few blocks away from the Carriage inn. The Carriage Inn is close to many little places and food places. We are able to walk to a stop, location, etc. However, the area does get a bit sketch after dark. But it's not that bad if you have other people to walk with. A prepackaged mini continental breakfast is included. Coffee in lobby is terrible. Don't do it!! Skip it, and no one gets hurt. It was sooo gross. Fruit, yogurt, OJ and muffin/Danish. Not too shabby, carriage inn, especially since I wasn't expecting the extra here. Every room is named after a 'celebrity' ours was Jello Biafra, who was the lead singer of the Dead Kennedy's. A biography was included in our room. It was clean, there's A/C which is a rarity in some of the older hotels in SF. Parking is $34/night. YES night! If you wanted to swim or workout, they shared amenities with the Best Western across the street. We didn't get a chance to try out those amenities, but it is there if you want. There's an extra $20 + tax surcharge for the 3rd person, if you have more people staying here. I had booked it online and didn't really see that information. Oh well, it's not too bad. I came to the bay for the Nike woman's (half) marathon. It was very close - about a mile away from Union Square - where the expo is held and where the start line is. I wouldn't mind coming back - but would rather stay closer to Union Square :) read more

Last year, unfortunately, trying to save money, I stayed at the Hotel Whitcomb, formerly Ramada Inn. On the budget scale, i got a small room in the back (where I can see the Holiday inn rooms (good people watching) but really old bathroom etc. This year I chose carefully from the 3 Joie de Vivre hotels within the same block, the Good Hotel, Americania and Carriage Inn (all were remodeled the previous year). I initially wanted to stay at the Good Hotel but knowing they didn't have A/C (only ceiling fans) chose the Carriage Inn. I would like to say, I think I made a good choice. The rooms were clean and remodeled, decorations eclectic, service was good. I actually checked in earlier than the schedule and my room was ready. (-1/2 star for the location of the room on the 2nd flr street side but I never had problems) (-1/4 star for the thin walls- nothing exciting thoug) (-1/4star for ice being on the 4th flr) All the other stars are for the location (for what I wanted), service (early check-in, courteous front desk persons, computer in first floor to print your info (boarding pass etc.)) There is always a person on the desk no matter how late you come in although you can use the key card on the door from the garage side. I really don't go for mini items for breakfast. so it was fine. Parking is available, jacuzzi near my room but never used, its still cold for that in SF or just not too many jacuzzi fans during this stay. No smoking rooms available. Other things I can say. I recommend it if you need a hotel by the SOMA area. Look for sale prices, got mine for 20% off for 3 night stay! Weekend rates are always higher! read more

Mina, the front desk gal, was incredibly kind and when I called beforehand and mentioned our anniversary, they had our champagne and 2 bottles for us in our room! Brian who works the evening shifts was AWESOME! He helped me navigate around, handled any questions I had and was so friendly when we would come back. Asking how everything was and even teased me. He sold the place for me! I was on the second floor in 202 and my co-worker was in 201. The rooms were beautiful the pictures really didn't do justice. Beds were comfy and I have a hard time sleeping. I use a heating pad daily. I never needed it there. Water pressure was great and you really couldn't hear a lot of the city noise. I didn't see any bugs and I looked! I checked the mattress and found none. They don't have a gym but they have an agreement where you can go across the street and show your key card to use there gym. Easy to get to BART, MUNI - parking on site. What they could improve on is the fact that the layout says ice is on every floor, not true only on the 4th floor. They have no fridges and the jacuzzi wasn't working. read more

Proof that good taste and good service is available without paying for a "luxury" hotel. Every room in the Carriage Inn is named after a famous San Francisco resident. I was given the Jello Biafra room - whether it was coincidence, or because of my tattoos and hair, I don't know - but I was happy either way. The rooms are gorgeous. Their designer was meticulous throughout the hotel, from the lobby to the rooms. Lots of patterns and colors co-exist throughout, without ever clashing or failing to work well together. Aqua paisley wallpaper, silver armchairs, brown patterned carpets and red & orange accents all somehow make a perfect harmony. My room had a Royal manual typewriter (working!) with a bio of Jello Biafra typed on a paper in the carriage. There is a subtle but consistent typewriter theme (get it? "Carriage" Inn?) throughout, including typewriter-key coasters, keycards and brochures with typewriter elements incorporated. Even better, the hotel will donate, with your permission, a small amount to a local charity which encourages love of literature and writing in children. The service was OUTSTANDING. Every person I talked to was not just polite, but incredibly helpful. They know the neighborhood and the city like the back of their hands, and I was made to feel like a guest at a $400 / night hotel, not a $90 hotel. On my second day, they had all remembered my name, and as I passed the lobby, I would hear a happy "good morning, Mr. Elliot." Simply the best hotel in San Francisco. Other chains should learn a lesson from Joi de Vivre hotels - you can always count on them. read more

This "3 star" hotel gets a 4 star ranking from me. By that, I mean that this is definitely not a swanky hotel (we're typically used to staying in the Hilton chain), but also not a Motel 6--it's definitely in that mid-range of things. But for what it is, it gets 4 stars because: 1) price--we got it for less than 90 bucks a night plus 1/2 off parking (and even at regular price, parking was a steal for the area)! 2) location--walking distance to market and powell 3) clean, nicely decorated, safe, free minifridge upon request. As to the complaints of noise and being older, which made me book with a little trepidation. You can hear people above you, but fortunately our upstairs neighbors didn't seem to come home until after 11pm and weren't too bad. The street cleaners in the alleyway next to us come at midnight MWF, i think. But we knew this might be an issue from the reviews, so we brought a noise machine and had no problems. You can also request a room on the 4th floor and away from the streets. It is an older boutique hotel with only 48 rooms, but it is pretty well-maintained. My only complaint would be that there was no microwave and the wi-fi (which is free) is painfully slow. Fortunately we get internet on our phone, which solved that problem as well. The breakfast currently offered is coffee and muffins. I'd say for the price we paid this place was a great value. read more

Cons- no one ever informed us of gym access across the street like another Yelper mentioned. not the cleanest & in my opinion after walking to & from our hotel to local transportation with my two children and mother, felt unsafe and a little scared with the amount of homeless we encountered and others that were High on drugs along with hyperdermic needles just laying around in the streets. In general my husband and I were satisfied with our stay at this hotel. Basic, but ok room. Would have liked a little fridge though to put some water bottles in. I deducted two stars because our booking said continental breakfast included but when I went down in the morning the lady in the lobby said no, not included. The other reason is that the price you get when booking is not at all what you have to pay, lots of add ons make the price go up quite a bit! All that should be included or at least be visible when reserving a room. read more

We scored this little gem on priceline for $100. We were pleasantly surprised to find this part of the city has had a lot of work done & is much cleaner & safer than years past. The staff (Evelyn) was extremely kind & friendly. She waived the $35 parking fee just because she could (we didn't ask). Our room was super cozy & amazingly quiet even though we were facing the street. We're going to the city again tonight & plan to at the Carriage Inn. One of the best deals in town! read more

I stayed at The Carriage Inn for 2 nights while visiting SFO for a conference, and I loved the charm, comfort, and cleanliness of the rooms, the friendly staff, and the convenience of the hotel to nearby attractions. On the other hand, I must agree with other reviewers on a few points: 1. WiFi is VERY spotty and pretty unreliable unless you're just checking an email or two 2. Location is quite sketchy after dark, so travel consciously (always, but especially in the area) 3. Water pressure in the bathroom (shower and toilet) were lacking That said, if the price is right I would consider staying here again :). read more

Place is very nice for what you pay for. It doesn't feel dirty or dingy and everythig is very clean. It feels like a new hotel. The free wireless Internet is awesome and it works very well. A strong signal wherever you are. They also have free Internet in the lobby in case you forgot your computer. The location is great because you are centrally located from everything you would want to do in SF. Parking is cheap and easilly accessible for 20 bucks a day with in and out privleges. I have no complaints with customer service. Btw. We experienced some paranormal activity in our room which was room 411. If you get this room beware of an apparition that you might see and feel at the end of your bed near the closet. read more

My family and I have been coming here for over 5 years, but unfortunately due to poor customer service, this will be the last year. The good: the rooms are nice, always clean, and well stocked. The location is ideal for what we do in the city (Giants game, friends near hayes valley, 5th street mall). A parking garage. Morning continental breakfast. The bad: can be noisy on the street side. Parking was recently raised from $25 a night to $35 (not including some other kind of "parking tax" that is on the bill). The ugly: Here's what I think has happened: I think the carriage inn is trying to become some kind of sheik, trendy, boutique hotel that thinks they can charge you over $300 a night for a new layer of paint over a best western. My parents booked our rooms over 6 months out, and booked it directly with the hotel front desk, not the 800 number. They asked for the AAA rate, and were given the rate. When they arrived they were almost harassed to show a "government ID" as that was what their rate was booked under. My mother explained that she never asked for that rate, and did not have a government ID. The front desk person basically let it drop after somehow proof of belonging to a teacher's credit union proved...something? When my parents came down to get their breakfast to bring up to their room on our check out day a different front desk woman again asked about a government ID. 1. my parents weren't checking out, just getting breakfast, and 2. really? We're still on this? When it came to check out, they had my mother almost in tears. Basically accusing her of lying about working for the government. My mother had the reservation confirmation with the price that was quoted to her - they were trying to charge her over $100 more - a night! In the end, the hotel did the right thing, but not with out leaving my mother shaken and offended. Their "normal" rate is outrageous for the neighborhood and quality of rooms. We will be staying elsewhere next year, and are sad for our time at Carriage Inn to end. In the past they have had reasonable rates and wonderful service. read more

A budget boutique style orgasmic experience! And super close to 1080 Folsom - "The OM" residence for those who would like to join in on morning meditation practice... Nice sized room with cozy fireplace, a stylish desk with an old fashioned typewriter for added ambiance. Comfortable king size bed with nice cotton sheets and fluffy down comforter was turn-on perfection. White cotton bathrobe was super soft. The bathroom was a decent size. The only turn off was the lack of water pressure.... Super friendly staff was helpful in navigating the area alerting me to which streets to not walk down. read more

I don't understand what anyone would have to complain about. This place was amazing! We stayed here on a saturday night because we attended a show at the Civic Auditorium. It was a short walk to the auditorium. The guy at the front desk was extremely helpful and friendly. I think his name was Scottie or Scott. He gave us directions multiple times, and when we saw him on the street after our show (he wasn't even on the clock), he still asked us how our night was. He could have pretended not to know us, but he was a genuinely nice person. The rooms were pretty spacious considering this is downtown SF. I have stayed in other boutique type hotels with rooms that were half the size. The rooms were super clean and well appointed with towels and other amenities. I will definitely stay here again! read more

I don't get the people complaining about the neighborhood. It's in SoMa, and pretty damn close to the Civic Center BART station. What did you expect? For those that don't know, around Civic Center there are homeless people. However, typically it's not a problem and SoMa is actually a pretty ok area. If you think it's a terrible area, I just assume you've lived in suburbia all your life. As long as you aren't stupid, you'll be fine. So let's get to it. Pros: - HUGE room - Nice pricing - 5 blocks from AT&T park (a little over a mile walking I think, so it's an easy walk) - Some nice restaurants nearby on Folsom - Clean room - Cool staff - Nifty Kitsch too it...cool room theme with authors - Close to Union Square (also around a mile) - Short walk to Civic Center BART - Cons: - Broken hot tub and after reading the reviews it has been that way since 2011 at least - WiFi is useless. If you need to do work, you are pretty well screwed - Hard to get a cab unless you call for one - I'm not a fan of the soap smell - Breakfast is down at the front desk, but I had no idea until the last day what the boxes were. Nobody let me know the handful of boxes on the table behind the front desk were the breakfast they advertised until I checked out. - I didn't have a fireplace :-( read more

We drove into sf on a whim and needed a place to stay tor the night. Not surprisingly not a single hotel had a room available save for the carriage inn. It soon became apparent that This hotel had been remodeled as to redeem its former self as a 2-3 star hotel. Every room seems to be themed. Mine was the Mel blanc room. The beds were stiff and the interior decorating was funny but somewhat dark in feeling. Somehow when it came to check out the bill was 80$ over what it was initially qouted at .... No we didn't order room service or mvies etc... If you are gonna spend over 240$ for a room, then it had better not be a painted over best western. read more

AIRPORT ACCESS: A+ This location was excellent and less than a few blocks from the BART, so super fast location to and from the SFO Airport if you're visiting. LOCATION: A+ Lots of dining choices around within walking distance and the Custom Burger across the street does deliver, but be forewarned that the prices are insane ($10-$12 for a burger...I'll pass on that). If this is your first time in a big city, there is a strong element of those down on their luck, just politely decline and press forward, but we didn't have too much of an issue with this. Also, good walking distance to the Haight and to China Town! THE ROOM: A Very clean and quiet! Didn't hear the other guests and the bed and chairs were very comfortable. No problems at all with housekeeping disturbing you if you wanted more sleep. FREE WI-FI, just ask for the code at check in!!! The TV channel selection was ok and the basic, flat LCD screen. I do wish the room had a mini fridge to keep food/drink cold, but that might be asking a bit much and could boost the rates. They did have a Jacuzzi on-site, and if you wanted to go across the street to their sister location, you could use the gym and pool there. FREE Continental Breakfast as well. STAFF: A+ Very friendly and very polite! All seemed very happy to help out and were great at offering a map and directions if needed. VALUE: A+ Awesome! Our conditioner wasn't working. It pumped out heat. The maintenance guy's contribution was to say "It's hot in here". It was 95 degrees in our room when we got home from a play. The front desk offered us a fan which was never delivered. We slept with 2 little side windows open so we got bug bites, heard 3 drug deals and 2 trash pickups. For that, they were going to compensate us for $35 parking. Bad customer service! The whole room should have been comped, staff apologies, and a certificate for a free night to earn back our trust. read more

Whoever decided the theme and design of this hotel needs oughta get a pat on the back. Call me shallow but I chose this hotel over the plethora of other hotels in the SOMA/Civic Center area because it features an old-fashioned typewriter on the website main page. Those who appreciate the old-fashioned typewriter deserve a double pat on the back. Typewriters are classy. The deal with the typewriters is that each room in this hotel is named after a different character/person with some San Francisco connection. Within each room, the typewriter sits on the desk, holding the neatly typed story of the person after whom your room is named. I say it is a charming and clever touch. Seems only half a glass of booze with melting ice and cigarette with red lipstick on the butt, smoldering in an ashtray is missing. (Don't get me wrong, our room was non smoking and smelled as such.) Needless to say this place has character. It is in a dodgy area as anyone familiar with San Francisco knows, but keep your chin up and you will be fine walking around, assuming you dont look too bewildered if you get lost. Also friendly staff and no problems with any booking. Also! Free sherry in the lobby. For reals. Take it to your room and type up a novel. read more

Me and my girlfriend decided to use San Francisco as a backdrop for our one year anniversary. I looked at the website and wanted to stay here because of the eclectic theme and design. I thought it was pretty neat to stay in a room named after a person associated with San Francisco. The Best Western name didn't scream chic or swanky but I thought I'd give it a try since it was located near many touristy attractions. And I'm glad we chose this place. We got the Isadora Duncan room. Not being familiar with her, I saw her smug looking cariacature on the wall and I assumed she was a poet. I googled her to find out that she was actually a famous dancer and choreographer. The decor was very nice and I loved the little touches here and there. To me it felt like a $200/night room, transporting me to another place and time. Where, I don't quite know but it would be an interesting journey to say the least. All in all we had a blast in San Francisco and the Carriage Inn wasn't just a place we stayed at, it was another lovely memory to commemorate our anniversary. We chose this hotel because all the others in the area were booked (it was Bay to Breakers weekend). We thought it was going to be awful. We were totally pleasantly surprised. It's got the quaint feel of a boutique hotel. The staff is really friendly. The guy who checked us in was incredibly nice. There's only one elevator, but the hotel is small, so it's fine. You may have to wait a bit, but, really, it's not a big deal. I LOVED the theme of the hotel. Each room has a different writer's name on the door. We were in the Hunter S. Thompson room. It was decorated in such an awesome way. Everything was clean. The best part was that it was SUPER QUIET. We didn't hear any neighbors at all and I know the place was booked. The hotel has its own parking garage, which isn't the case for some hotels in the city. It was very convenient. There was a charge for it, but that should be expected anywhere. Oh, they give you a cute little boxed breakfast in the morning, so that was nice -- fruit, milk, juice, pastry. The only downside to this hotel is the location. The neighborhood isn't that great. We walked down to embarcadero though--about a mile or so. Union Square is a walk away too. Bottom line: We'd come back. read more

I found this hotel on priceline... pretty cute, nicely decorated and clean. A garage is built in next door for cars and the lobby and elevator are secure (need key to get it). Took about 10 mins to walk to union square. No complaints read more

Pretty sure I got bed bug bites from my one night at this hotel (9/26/2018). I see that this isn't a new issue. Too bad because otherwise I would have recommended the hotel as quiet, convenient and pleasantly appointed. read more

Fireplace King Room Pros: - affordable pricing - Clean room/bathroom - Complimentary "Breakfast" - On site Parking - Friendly staff - Free upgrade due to hotel mistake: from Deluxe Queen Double to Fireplace King - Close to federal buildings - functional shower/tub - trendy/informational decor: each room has a 'famous person' history - blocks from union square - Free in room coffee/tea and coffee maker Cons: - Reservation was lost/missing; I was charged twice - Not the best neighborhood - They were doing construction right outside of our window (hammering at 9am); without prior notification - Complimentary continental "breakfast" was skimpy. Yogurt, apple, pastry, carton of OJ, Carton of Milk =/= CONTINENTAL - Bedding is not done correctly. There is supposed to be another sheet under the comforter. - WiFi was slow and goes in and out. If you're just looking for a place to sleep, this is a rather decent place. All in all, it was comfortable for a person who was just in town for one night. read more

This is a great hidden gem in SOMA. It looks like a dull Best Western on the outside, but the interior rooms are outfitted like a true Joie de Vivre boutique hotel. All the rooms are names after San Francisco famous personalities and there is a bio of that person in the room. I was sold by the antique typewriter in the room and great bed. Fun hotel. Only downside is the neighborhood which is a bit of 'no man's land' for a few blocks, and not great to walk around at night, but in a convenient proximity to BART and Market Street. read more

Very friendly staff, large rooms and probably some of the most comfortable hotel beds I have ever slept in. As an added bonus each of the rooms are named after someone, I even saw a Cheech Marin room! If you're eco-conscious you'll be happy to know the hotel has measures in place to help the environment when it comes to cleaning your linens, towels, and even the bottle water provided. The only downside to the hotel is I found their free wi-fi to be VERY hit or miss. I would have a strong signal, but I found my connection would drop every 10-15 minutes, but I guess you get what you pay for. Overall this is a great choice for someone looking to stay in the SOMA district. read more

Great location for business travel. I was able to take the BART directly from SFO and walk to the hotel quite easily from the Midtown station. It is about a half mile walk to Moscone Center each day and short walking distance to Union Square, shopping, restaurants, etc. SO, no worries about expensive cab fares, overnight parking issues, valet fees, etc. I will definitely be back on my next biz trip to Moscone! Also, I accidentally left two necklaces and they were very helpful in returning those to me! Thank you!! read more

I found this hotel thoroughly mediocre. Yes, it has character--the theme and design are lovely. But the Carriage Inn really needs to have more than one person at the front desk at a time, and more attentive service would be appreciated. I'm puzzled as to why a couple would be put in a room with two separate beds instead of one large one, and it was a song and dance to get a room change. Also, the walls are, as another reviewer put it, pretty much paper-thin. We could easily hear the people upstairs moving around. Nice touches: the outdoor jacuzzi and the free coffee and muffins at breakfast time. Not-so-nice touches: the fact that we had to request a room change three times, the broken soda machine (which was the only one in the whole hotel), the missing TV remote in one room and missing alarm clock/iPod docking station in another, and the fact that someone at the front desk dismissed us on the phone by saying, "I'm with a guest." Uh, we're guests too, and we paid plenty to stay there. We'll skip it next time. read more

The only positive thing I can say is that the room was very clean, which attests to the conscientiousness of the house keeping crew; to them I would give 5 stars. The check in was a challenge. Although I had a confirmation number, the front desk girl could not locate my reservation for 20 minutes. After numerous phone calls, she determined that my reservation had been incorrectly lodged with their sister facility across the street (the Americania Hotel). She gave me a room assignment and told me to go across the street to get my key. When I got across the street,the guy had no idea why I was talking to him if I had been booked in at the Carriage Inn. More wasted time explaining everything to him. Finally got a room key. The room was very small. The mattress was as hard as the sidewalk. A very bright light shone right outside the window, which created a ring of light around the curtain. The noise from the street was epic and sustained throughout the night. All of these things were offset by the proximity to the courthouse, which was why I chose the location in the first place. However, when my hair dryer popped the circuit in the morning, completely killing all of the electricity in the room, that was a bit much. Getting ready for court in the dark was a challenge. The electricity was not restored in the room for the remainder of my stay. At checkout, I asked for a discount for the inconvenience--they almost laughed at me. I would not recommend this place unless your sense of adventure depends on extreme uncertainty with your lodging accommodations. read more
