Came here for dinner the other day and just before closing. I ordered the #4 combination plate a beef taco, enchilada and chili relleno with beans and rice. The food was pretty good except for my taco shell which was tough and hard to chew. Good food but don't come close to closing since you'll get the leftovers. Besides being pretty busy-but we were expecting that since it's Mother's Day-we had great service and the food was delicious. As always canela cafe is my favorite. This place literally feels like I'm being fed at my mom's house. Except for here she doesn't have to cook-and neither do I!! We had a few plate on our table, menudo, chilaquiles special, chicharrones special, carne asada burrito and chile verde breakfast. Everyone enjoyed their choices, I also tried my mom's chicharrón special and it was very tasty. The server was sweet and checked on us frequently. I can see why this place has such good reviews. My friend and I came here for the first time and this place was packed even near closing time around 8 pm. We received chips and salsa upon sitting down. I ordered the chile relleno and the enchilada plate that came with rice and beans. I also had the mini tostada, which had refried beans, cheese, lettuce, and guac. It was yummy. Everything i had was pretty good, but my only complaint is that there was very little rice and beans. Overall, the food was very delicious and I would definitely come back. I'm glad to see that they have multiple places in Fresno. Since they were very busy, we had to flag down the staff member a couple of times for the check and also for boxes. They close the back room an hour before closing so that they can clean. And so you might be waiting a bit since there are only about 13-15 tables in the front two rooms. I recently went back to Carrillo's Mexican Restaurant after it had been a while, and it reminded me exactly why I love this place so much. They still remembered me and took care of me the same way they always have, which truly means a lot. Without even having to ask, they brought out the spicy salsa, chili oil, and hot sauce. It's those little extra touches that make you feel so welcomed and taken care of. The food is always top notch, consistently flavorful, and satisfying every single time. The Tacos, Chile Relleno's, Enchiladas and rice are great. I especially like the rice with the Rellono sauce on top. It took awhile for me to find another place I liked when I moved back from the mountain so I'm thrilled. The service is fabulous, they have my order down and they bring the food out pretty fast. Walked in and immediately greeted by friendly staff and was directed to sit where we liked. The immediate entrance area has a dining area and then there is another adjacent room with more seating. The place had a steady amount of customers dining in and to-go. Our waiter took our drink orders and delivered them promptly with chips and salsa (was not spicy) When he came back to take our food order we were able to ask our questions and place our orders. The food arrived and was delicious with generous servings. Our waiter and host checked on us half way thru. When it was time to get the check, the waiter noticed our sodas were not quite gone and offered to bring us to go cups- which he did and they were already filled with drinks! Im not sure if thats standard and its "only" soda, but the gesture was truly appreciated. Would definitely recommend and come back. read more

I came here for a breakfast burrito only. I believe there is a lot of room for improvements. This place was busy at 10:00 am on a Monday. The place was filled with fellow patrons that seemed to be regular customers. I ordered a carne asada burrito that was supposed to be wet. They burrito came with beans and rice of course. The disappointment was the lack of sauce drizzled on top of the burrito. The cost is extra to make it wet and yet the burrito was barely wet. See pic. I've been recommended this place by others. Decent Mexican food. Service was quick. I did have to ask for my soda twice before it was brought to me. I ordered the two tacos and enchilada combo. All pulled chicken. It was fine. My chicken tacos were not completely full and had all of empty shell. My husband ordered the enchilada, taco, then asked for a chili verde burrito and a third item, which was an up-charge. I visited here for the quesa birria tacos after seeing this place made the news! The birria, sauce and chips were amazing! Here's my critique: the tortillas were burnt to a crisp. This made it hard to enjoy the tacos. The good news was that they wrapped each taco with 2 tortillas and if you carefully removed the outer crisped tortilla, you're left with the soft taco. I'd rather not have had to fight with it to remove it though. Also, the salsa for the chips was not very spicy at all. It was actually more watery than having real substance. First time here and I was really disappointed with my recent experience here. I placed an order at the counter to go...Before leaving, I made sure to ask if my order had the tamales I ordered in the bag and I was told everything was included. When I got home, I realized the tamales were missing. The restaurant admitted they hadn't given me my full order but told me I could either have store credit and use it within a week, drive back to pick up the missing food, or come in for a refund. The only reason I stopped at this location was because it's close to my doctor's office -- I recently had a cesarean and can't be going back and forth. I asked if they could simply refund the money to my card since they had the transaction information, but they refused and made me drive back just to get cash. It's really disappointing to be inconvenienced like that, especially when the mistake was on their end. I hope they improve their customer service and show more understanding toward their customers' situations. Do better about double checking for missing item. read more

Excellent authentic Mexican food! We were seated right away and noticed this place getting more people coming in as it hit noon on a weekday. We were hoping this place is good as I don't get to eat good Mexican food where I'm from. I ordered the carnitas taco which is huge- not street taco size and very filling full of flavor. Also had the pozole with big chunks of pork and hominy. I added cabbage and onions and it was full of flavor and a big bowl. I couldn't finish and had to take half to go. Hubby ordered the tacos plate. He loved the beans and the carne Asada taco and carnitas taco were so delicious. The meats are marinated well and everything came out tasty. This place 100% 5 star the homemade salsa so good and the warm chips with the seasoning out of bounds! Ambiance not fancy but who needs that when just looking for great Mexican food. Located in a strip mall with other businesses. Inside super clean and service for sure 5 out of 5 stars! For dinner I had the shredded beef taco plate with rice and beans with a Modello. Simple meal but you know how people screw up simple. Not Carrillo's. This meal was delicious! I devoured every bit of this and left so full! They also have homemade hot sauces which I would highly recommend both are very good but their hot one will leave a sting! They accommodated no rice and beans in his burrito per his request, no problem. 3/5 I got the dinner combo: 2 cheese enchiladas and a taco w/ rice and beans. I also ordered a side of fajita veggies. My taco tortilla was in between crunchy and soft, perhaps they didn't fry it long enough. We tasted soy sauce? In the Fajita veggies. I didn't get a salad with my dinner entree as listed on the menu. Table salsas were okay. 3/5 I asked if they offered vegetarian options as it was listed on their Yelp page "vegan and vegetarian options." Our server condescendly said, "Everything has meat! Even the chips!" I was confused looking at the chips and salsa on the table. He then said, "We use lard!" Service was better after taking our order. He checked on us occasionally. If I could give more than 5 stars, I would! We were visiting from out of town and decided to try Carillo's Mexican food for the first time -- and wow, we are SO glad we did. The food was absolutely amazing. I ordered the Chile Colorado and it was hands down one of the best I've ever had, flavorful, tender, and perfectly seasoned. 3 of my daughters got the quesabirria and couldn't stop talking about how delicious it was. My husband and my other daughter ordered the super burritos and they were huge and packed with flavor. Every single plate and the horchata was a 10/10. On top of the incredible food, the service made the experience even better. Our waiter, Victor, was absolutely amazing. He made sure all our needs were met, checked in on us regularly, and took great care of our family. Everyone else we came in contact with was just as wonderful, truly top-tier customer service all around. We would recommend this place 10 out of 10. If you're in Clovis, this spot is a must! After a very long day at Yosetime National Park we were heading to our airbnb. After making a quick stop to look for a dinner stop we came across this restaurant. After reading the many great reviews we decided to check it out. All the workers here are super nice and attentive. They took our order fairly quickly and brought us some warm chips and salsa to munch on while we waited for our dinner. As we waited I was shocked how many people kept coming in either to dine in or for take out. I ordered the fajitas trio. It came with either a side salad or a tostada. I decided to go with the tostada since I was starving and I'm so glad I did. The tostada was like a meal on its own. Now when my entree finally arrived I was shocked how big it was. Definitely could be good enough for 2 to share. All of the food was excellent the only thing I wasn't crazy about was the corn tortillas. read more

Server still rushed, annoyed. Ok, looks like she's busy I can let that go. Food arrived. I didn't order a crunchy taco, I ordered a street style corn tortilla. But I'll let that go too. Hard, ALSO stale shell (looks like one from a box in the grocery store). With iceberg lettuce and cheap pre shredded cheese. Not eating stale taco shell. Chicken was bland. I don't get it. Have heard really great thingss from several people about Carrillo's, but my experi3nce a few nights ago was less than. Upon arriving, first impression was the make-shift signage outside of the nights specials. However, hearing how good this place is I thought it must be better in side. Place is quite run down looking, was not expecting "hole in the wall" look on the inside. Hole in the Wall looking is okay as long as the restaurant is clean and the food is good. Place was full of people ... good sign. Was seated promptly. Orders taken in a timely manner and chips/salsa and drinks came quickly. I liked the lightness to the chips and that they were warm and seasoned. Salsa was okay. The person who took our order spoke so fast and mumbled that it was difficult to understand him. My boyfriend and I both ordered the two grilled chicken tacos combo plates. Presentation wise, the plate looked messy, as if they had been slopped onto the plate. Beans already had the thin solid layer on top as if they had been plated for a while. Taste of beans/rice was just okay, but improved significantly when lemon juice squeezed on top. Tacos were street taco style: two small tortillas, meat, cilantro, onions. No cheese or cabbage. Because I ordered grilled tacos, I could not have a crunchy shell which I would have preferred. Tacos were just okay. Towards the end of our meal my boyfriend gestures to me to look up .... the pull on the ceiling fan above our head was thick and furry full of dust as well as the ceiling tiles. We came in in a Sunday late afternoon. If you follow me you know I live life with a service dog. Usually, I post about that further down but need to address it earlier this time. We were waiting for a seat and were told right away that we coukd not be seated in the main dining area of the restaurant because of the "dog". I explained that she is my service dog and they said it didn't matter. They would seat us but it would be by the door because they don't allow "dogs" in the main dining area. Later they explained its because some people might be scared of the dog. That os not a valid reason to break the law. I pulled up the law that shows that per the ADA people with service dogs are not to be segregated. They didn't care. They sat us by the door. It was in the 50's outside and everytime the door opened we for blasted with cold air. 2 ladies came in amd left the soor propped open and we had to get up from the table and close it. Other people held the door open for their party who in many cases were still rossing the parking lot.. This place gets 0 paws up for accessibility. If you have a service dog I would suggest not coming here. The server was otherwise fairly friendly.. but only brought 1 basket of chips and one side of salsa for 5 of us. He said he was going to bring us another, but never did. I wasn't going to ask because I didn't want to get charged because extra baskets are 2$. The seats are ripped to hades in the booths, and the place is not super clean. This qualifies as a hole in the wall. That said, I've had some mighty fine food in such places. My mother in law spoke very highly of this place so were going to give it a try. I ordered a shredded chicken chimichanga. I asked for the beans and rice to be served on the side. My hubs got the grand burrito with chili Verde. The food arrived nice and hot after a reasonable wait. My plate was exactly as I asked. We dug in and the food was very good. I was very happy with my chinichanga the chicken was not dry amd the sauce it was served with was good. The Mr. Was happy with his burrito and said it was flavorful. The rest of the family agreed that their food was good as well. We decided we would probably order from this restaurant again, but would never choose to try and eat in house again. It hurts that they choose to blatantly break the law like this..because we really enjoyed it. But it's not very close to warrant placing an order for pick up very often. read more

I'm a white guy who has been married to a Hispanic woman from San Antonio TX for 33 years. I understand locational differences of Mexican food. I've traveled all over Mexico and the Southern US from tip to tip. I have a rule, you don't eat Mexican food north of Austin TX. Now on to Carrillo's. We at here after attending the closest Catholic Church near by. We were exited to eat some Mexican food based on the reviews. I ordered a the Enchilada and Crispy taco Plate. My enchiladas literally had no cheese or anything inside of them. Nothing. Then it's like they poured a canned red sauce on top of the enchiladas. It didn't seem home made. The young man that was to wait our table needed to be chased down for anything. It's as though his section was on the other side of the building. I felt bad for the man in the kitchen. Seemed as though he was either the owner or manager but he was doing the cooking and appeared to be in the kitchen. I'm going to chalk this review up to cultural and location difference except for the nothing inside of the enchiladas. We didn't want to complain but in San Antonio this would have been a $12 plate, not a $17 plate. We understand that the laws in California have ruined most anything. You can't eat anywhere for less that say $65 to $75 in California. The chips and hot sauce were good and the staff were friendly. Maybe enchiladas and crunch tacos aren't their thing. I'll tell you what made me try this place out was when another reviewer said it was though her hard shell taco wasn't completely cooked and was chewy. Being married to a Hispanic cook, that is exactly how we like our hard shell tacos. Fried in a pan and cooked where it has a little tug and doesn't fall apart.
