I went here Tuesday, May 7, 2019. I am familiar with the Carson City Senior Center and wanted to…read morecheck this one out to see how it compared. Parking is more difficult at this location as there is not a lot of it, and some spots are farther away. It is also in the same plaza as the Lake Tahoe Historical Society (museum and store) and Tahoe Art League Art Center, so when they are open, parking will be tighter. It is in an older building, which is not as big. I think it is in an old, small school building, judging by the small winding hall leading to the restrooms and activity center. It kind of felt claustrophobic, like a dark dungeon in some parts, or like I was in a time warp and it was the 1950's. There are not as many seniors here as Carson City's. In Carson City, the line of seniors for lunch is insanely long, whereas here you just sit down and they bring it to you and there were not a lot of people, maybe 15 or 20. Lunch seems plainer, and there is a $3 suggested donation for seniors 60 and over and their spouses and dependents of any age, but this is not required (vs. $2.25 for Carson City). Guest accompanied by a senior pay $5. Coffee costs $0.50. The lunch when I came was: tuna salad on a bed of lettuce navy bean soup wheat roll pineapple junks milk I didn't have any, but it seems like standard hospital food or maybe food you would see at a soup kitchen, or the kind of food served when I was in school in the 80's. This isn't fine dining, but at $3, you can't expect that much. I looked in the food storage room, and there were a lot of gigantic canned goods (see my pic). There are activities here in the cafeteria room, such as bridge, bingo, and dancing. There is also a smaller activity room down the hall. Apparently there is also a library and computer room, but I was not aware of this when I went. They also have services here similar to Carson City, such as AARP tax services and lawyers available. I think proceeds here go to Meals on Wheels. There was no sitting area like in Carson City, just the cafeteria. Also, unlike Carson City, there was no gift shop or thrift store here. The employee who greeted me was super friendly. She told the administrator, who was walking by, I was interested in a tour, but she kind of blew past me. That is fine, as I like to explore myself and take lots of pictures. All in all, I felt welcome. It was a let down when I was used to the modern, spacious senior center in Carson City, but South Lake Tahoe is smaller, so I can understand that.

September 13, 2025 was my most recent visit to the Food Bank of Northern Nevada…read more Kudos to Nancy V of Reno who tirelessly coordinates the volunteer efforts at least 6 times a year at this Food Bank location. Here is my story: Very organized Very neat and clean establishment Very articulate Manager Very worthy cause Get there and volunteer for 3 hours. Wash your hands and dawn your gloves. Get assigned to a station and get to work. This journey, I sorted canned goods. We need to check on several things and they are: expiration date of product and condition of good. Each type of food in cans have different expiration dates. They are sorted by container in advance of our getting to work. They had pallets of dried goods, infant foods, paper products, and the list goes on. It is my understanding that Walmart (whose regional distribution center is a block away) brings their stale dated or expired goods to The FBNN for repacking and distribution. Nothing goes to waste. Whatever does not got out to various charities goes out to various farms to feed their herd. A worthwhile cause, a worthwhile journey! Hana Hou Nancy V

I should have stopped by Payless ShoeSource, as they are closing nationally and have good deals, but I didn't have time. I have been here many time over the past four plus years. This plaza is located at the southwest corner of US Route 395 and Topsy Lane, just past Clear Creek Plaza and the Carson City limit. It is technically in Douglas County, but has a Carson City postal address, as it is served by that post office. It has two entrances on US Route 395, one entrance on Topsy Lane, and a back entrance on Vista Grande Boulevard (by Costco). It is also right next to Clear Creek Plaza to the north, on Topsy Lane. This shopping center has a variety of useful and somewhat higher-end stores than the neighboring Clear Creek Plaza. The stores are: Armed Forces Career Center AT&T Bank of America Bed Bath & Beyond Best Buy Bike Habitat Boot Barn China Jade Horse Cost Plus World Market Dollar Tree EyeZone Nevada Famous Footwear Farmer's Insurance GameStop GNC In-N-Out Burger Jamba Juice La Salsa Grill Marshalls Mattress Firm Maurices Michaels Panda Express Payless ShoeSource (going out of business soon) Petco Pier One Imports Play It Again Sports Qdoba Mexican Eats Roger's Carpet One Floor & Home Round Table Pizza Senior Care Plus Sierra Sewing, Quilting, & Vacuums Starbucks (with drive-thru) TeamClips The UPS Store Ulta Beauty Verizon Wireless There used to be a Claire's, Quiznos, and Styles for Less here, but they closed. I love coming here as I always feel safe and have plenty of stores to choose from. I have always found there to be plenty of parking. It is a clean and well-maintained plaza, with just a few vacancies. The views from this plaza are also spectacular, as you can see the mountains on the west end and hills and desert on the east end.

Unless you are very desperate and have no transportation that's fine, but you'd be better served to use Ron Wood near N Carson Street and Hot Springs Rd! Close to McDonald's and the Welfare office! The food at FISH is gross! There is some bread and milk but check the dates on the milk! I was shocked to see gallons of milk put out in the fridge that were dated from June and this was September! If you ask for a "FOOD GRANT"(the food is poison)Their computers dive deep into your personal records and much of their information is incorrect anyway!!! Something strange going on here!!! So many Americans are desperate and these people at Fish are playing God while people are suffering!!! One young Asian girl there was trying to flirt with me(an old man) most likely trying to get pregnant!!! Absolutely disgusting!!! Now they've appointed old ladies as Nazi volunteers to harass people as they come in the door!!! The food I've picked up there only goes to the disabled seniors in my building bc they can't leave our property!!! Eventually the Health Department will shut down this toilet and not a moment too soon!!! F' FISH and the people that work there!!! #yukkkk
