My husband and son meeting some of the donkeys.

We took our almost 2 year old to Desert Rose Ranch to see some animals. He had a blast! The owners are friendly and knowledgeable as they showed us around the different animal pens. My son was able to pet all the different animals, his favorite being the donkeys. We also got a wagon ride and got to look for quartz. Or in my sons case, rocks. They also offer gold panning, which we will definitely be back to explore gold panning when my son is older. This is a place for kids of all ages or just adults looking to enjoy time with some chill animals.

When we arrived, I definitely was not expecting the alpacas to be free roaming!! They were so cute and obviously well taken care of and loved. I bought some alpaca food for $5 and it was a big portion that kept me and my family busy. All of the staff was friendly and very accommodating. It was a hot day without shade but we didn't have much of a problem.

There is also an option to "glamp" in the tent provided by the farm. The alpacas and a few other animals are free roaming and will greet you at your campsite or the petting zoo area. We camped for the night and in the morning we were greeted at our van by the old donkey on the farm. The alpacas are the main star though, so friendly and adorable! We brought our dogs with us and the alpacas were very curious to meet them. They followed us around the farm for quite a while. I literately fell in love with this place and I can't wait to go back!!! There were even twins goats born the hour before we arrived. What's not to love about this amazing place. I feel lucky to have experienced it!

The Sanctuary was so clean and the animals looked healthy and well taken care of. We watched enrichment feeding with several of them and each enclosure was beautiful. The setting is gorgeous and it's an easy walk to each enclosure. We loved learning the names of each resident animal, and their back story and history as to how they came to live there. They have an amazing array of animals, including bears, wolves, raccoons, a coyote, a porcupine, a jaguar, a cheetah, a bobcat, a mountain lion, foxes, owls, and other birds of prey. We took our time walking around and enjoying the beautiful location, and it took us about two hours to see everything. Laura, on of the staff members was super friendly, and Jasmine gave an amazing presentation on their Porcupine. She is extremely knowledgeable and sweet. We hadn't been there in over twenty years, and we were amazed by the changes. The restrooms were super clean, there were plenty of garbage/recycle cans available, and the paths were clearly marked. We didn't try the food truck, but it smelled delicious, and they had an ice cream truck, and a bar with a great variety of drinks available, many of which were from local breweries/distilleries. The gift shop was great! So many cool things to look at and purchase and they carry soft drinks/water and ice cream. I highly recommend a visit! They are doing incredible, life-saving work for animals who have no other option. This event was adults only, but their normal operations are family friendly and they have a ton of special events listed on their website!

The scenery was breathtaking, and the ride felt like a real adventure rather than just following a trail in a line. We especially appreciated that the ride felt personal, peaceful, and authentic. You can tell the horses are well cared for and that the guides genuinely love what they do. Highly, highly recommend this experience if you're looking for a scenic and memorable ride in the Truckee/Tahoe area!

I was surprised to see how they pushed the entrance area past the barn, but totally makes sense for those who may want to just stop by to shop and not want to enjoy the festivities. The staff were all friendly and kept up with keeping the animal pens clear of poop, especially for the petting ones. They had signage to designate which ones you could feed the animal food to and which ones you couldn't enter due to the animals resting. I really liked how they sectioned off all the animals off to the left side with its own entrance and exit and lots of sanitizing and handwashing stations nearby. They had some new things at the farm too. I saw signage advertising Cuddling with Calves for $20 (kids 8+). They also had some additional calves to see and pet along the way. So adorable! Outside of the animal area, they had a new section, Peacock Pedalers, that allowed kids and adults to ride tricycles around. They also had refreshment stations within the farm for drinks, kettlecorn, and other snacks, which made it convenient. What surprised me was that the features that were typically busy on our past visits, like the mini zip lines and the barrel ride, were very little to no waits. They offered lots of seating for taking a break and grabbing some food from the three food trucks they offered. The pulled pork nachos were yummy! It was a great deal to spend the day at the farm for $20 tickets. Yes, they offered lots of additions like the animal feed, train tickets, and gem sluicing for a price but not really necessary to have a great experience. The baby chicks and goats were the highlight of our visit. My daughter wants to go back next weekend!

Wandering down the trails to find all the little vignettes was fun and then we enjoyed meeting all the animals and feeding them treats. Hard to pick any favorites amongst the animals but the little goats were a big hit since they were so easy to interact with. The staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful, and we appreciated the popcorn, cider and water snacks. I'm not sure if we actually found all the items on the "treasure hunt" but they kindly allowed my granddaughter to pick a "prize" anyway and she loved the purple magic wand she chose. One difficulty is that there is no restroom, not even a portapotty. Given the location that is not good as it is quite a distance to get to any place with a public restroom. Another is that there is no way to contact the venue by phone if you have questions. I almost didn't go because I was a bit late and the confirmation I received said that we had to be there at our specific time with no ability to change it. Fortunately my son was able to email them and ask if I could catch up to them on the trail if I arrived a bit late and they responded quickly enough that I didn't have to turn around and go back home (my drive there was two hours).
